We have been able to maintain the irrigation and keep up with the weeding ourselves, because it was such a low-maintenance design. We're just moved out of the house to have some structural work done, and we are missing the garden so much, and it made me reflect on how grateful we are to John and his crew for their amazing work. I found that out after they had just blown us off for three months in a row without even a phone call, text or email, and absolutely no replies to our numerous attempts to contact them. They have pulled this stunt frequently for years, they just won't show up on the scheduled days and never give us a head's up, but will still send out monthly bills for doing absolutely no work. The owner, Rich Ballesteros, bs'd me about an illness in the family, even though HE never does any of the labor himself, (he has several workers), and he promised us one more visit to leave on a "positive" note, and then he totally blew us off again!! No call, no contact, no nothing! Just one last no-show! This guy is a total jerk! Stay away from this company! Anyone else get the same unprofessional treatment from Ballesteros Landscaping?

We decided to hire Rock and Rose (without looking them up here) because they are in our…read moreneighborhood. They came by and looked at our garden and told us it would take two visits to clean things up so they can then start regular visits. After bringing their crew in for two days (12 total hours) they were only able to finish half the job they committed to, something our previous Gardener was able to do by himself in 8 hours. Even so, all we asked was that they come back and finish the job soon before what's left gets so overgrown it will take a lot more work (and expense) to deal with. They agreed and said they would come back to see what's left and committed to finishing the job within a few days after that. They had our yard key and permission to come anytime they wanted... so we went out of town for over a week. When we got back we unfortunately saw that nothing was done, no visit to assess what was left to do, no one came to finish the job and most annoying part of all, no communication about it at all. We were totally blown-off LOL. So we cut our losses before we got deeper into the hole. And as we thought, it cost us A LOT more to bring in new Gardners to finish what Rock and Rose started. Feeling silly for not checking here first about Rock and Rose. Usually hiring someone local works best.

They are very hard to get a hold of and to respond, and when they finally do send someone out, they…read moreregularly go way past the agreed-upon time/expense. The first few times they were able to landscape my backyard easily in under the allotted 3 hours (with time left over to work on the front), but after that, they would spend 5-6 hours on the same yard (which was in the same condition as the previous times) and bill me for the extra time, and then deny we'd ever agreed upon 3 hours, even though I had it in writing over email. This happened multiple times and seemed to only be getting worse. I think what happened is that the first few times the gardeners had another appointment afterwards they had to go to, so they stuck to the allotted time and were efficient, but when they didn't have other appointments after on subsequent visits, they tried to prolong the work as much as possible for more $$. I hate writing negative reviews, but this is either major incompetence and mismanagement, or worse, unethical business practices. (I can easily document everything I said above, since many of the communications were over email.) Seems like other reviewers have also had similar issues with their bizarre communication and billing practices. I recommend staying away. This type of work is typically (and should be) much more straightforward/easy and black and white.

Paul is a good guy. He communicates well over text & phone and in person. He is trying to run a small business in a hard environment. I root for people like Paul. I like hiring people like Paul. Usually that works out; in this case, it did not entirely. I had Paul do some yard work for me. The main project was turf install. I'l get to that in a second. In addition, Paul also did some yard cleanout and some new plant install. Those things went very well. I'll add those pics later. The turf was the main project, and where most of the expense was. The end product is really not good. I've had many people --a half dozen --both from the trades and friends who have installed turf --take a look and all have pointed out the many ways it is subpar, which I've attached pictures of below. 1. The seam is in the wrong place. It simply is in the most visible place and unnecessarily. To his credit, Paul owned that this was a mistake placement, but didn't correct the job. 2. The seam is not tight --it's scrunched and pulls up anywhere you pull on it. 3. The edges are messy --see pics 4. The edges are not secure --see pics. 5. It's not at all graded --it has mounds throughout. I'm not sure how this is possible, as grading is a very basic thing one does before install. It's perhaps the most noticeable bad element of the job. To Paul's absolute credit, he was always responsive when I complained, but I knew it wasn't going anywhere --I was pushing a rock up a hill: he and I simply disagreed on what turf should look like when it's done, and I just grew tired of calling out problems when the fundamental problem is mine: I should have hired someone else. Win some lose some. To summarize, if I had to do it differently I * would not make final payment until I'm satisfied (not the first time I've made this mistake!) * would hire Paul for yard cleanup and light landscaping * would hire someone else for turf

I had been trying to find a drainage expert for years to help figure out some issues at my house…read morewhich is on a hill. Edelmar was the first person to really understand the problems and be able to quickly devise and implement effective solutions. I've now hired Edelmar to do a variety of work: water drainage management, retaining wall replacement, wood post replacement, and landscaping. I was actually a little bit worried when I first hired him for the first job, to replace a retaining wall, because his bid was so low. But his crew did good work. There was an insane amount of manual labor involved since the previous wall had basically been overwhelmed with dirt and buried. Several truckloads of dirt had to be disposed of... You can see one of them in the photo. He also installed foundation drainage using the Miradrain product and some base rock. When they dug out the old retaining wall, it also exposed significant amount of damaged siding and waterproofing on our adjacent house. This meant that we had to replace the waterproofing and siding on an emergency basis since it would be nearly impossible to do so once they installed the rest of the new retaining wall. One of Edelmar's brothers, experienced in this area, helped us do this work right on the spot for a fee that I considered completely reasonable. This helped establish trust. I've since hired Edelmar and team for additional work.

Job was completed on time and he walked me through everything that was done and showed me how to work the timer that was setup for my sprinklers. I appreciated that I was able to convey what I wanted and needed and that was it. I didn't have to specify brands or go through a bunch of different samples. Edelmar was able to provide everything for the job. Again, can't recommend him enough!! One other thing to note. They cleaned everything up each night they left. They washed down the walkways and sidewalk and made sure to leave everything perfectly clean.
