Back in the late 70's and early 80's, we used to drop in on a Friday night and the queue use to be outside the door and sometimes much further down. We would order a variety of food from fish n chips to steak and kidney pie and chips, etc. Over the years we got to know Sam and his family well at the chippy shop and from the late 1980's through to the mid-1990's my brother or I, and sometimes both of us would walk in on a Friday night and order a whole chicken, two large bags of chips and a small bag of mushrooms (for my brother). We would eat the lot and polish it down with a bottle of Lambrusco, ahhhh. My mouth is watering right now... . I miss traditional English fish n chips in the United States; I have lived across the US over the last 11 years and nowhere has come close to Sam's chippy from the 1980's on Upper Villier Street, Wolverhampton. I have bumped into Sam at Waitrose on the Penn Road every now and again during my visits back to the Uk, but not sure what he is up to now.

I often order fresh roe here over the phone, which is ready within 10 minutes for collecting. At most fish & chip shops, I've had to wait a good 20 minutes. The roe is of excellent quality too, it's cooked perfectly, you get a very large piece and it is full of flavour. And incase you didn't know, roe is in fact cod eggs. (I'm sorry if you don't like roe, I've probably put you off whatever you are doing by going into too much detail, but oh well!) The cod is also very tasty and comes in large portions. It costs no more than £4 with a small amount of chips. You really do get value for money.

Last Sunday, we both had cod and chips just arriving in time to take advantage of the Sunday opening. The chips were well-cooked and nicely seasoned with salt. I have to be in the mood for vinegar. The fish batter was golden and crispy, harbouring white tender cod at its absolute best.
