Walking into About Music is a joy for those of us who have a serious interest in instruments. It's a tiny store, but packed to the brim with various string instruments, mostly focusing on guitars and their cousins--mandolins, banjos, probably some ukeleles, etc. The owner is extremely helpful and will be glad to talk with you for a bit about anything music-related. If you're looking for instruction, you can either receive it here in the store (there are closet-sized, but serviceable, studios in the back), or the delightful owner will help you find it, if he doesn't already offer it on your desired instrument. I have heard great things about this place, and even after I had dropped off my guitar I felt like he was a pretty good guy. I came back to pick it up, for the price we had agreed upon over the phone, and he got very upset. He was yelling and saying that he doesn't work for free and calling me a liar. All in front of two kids who looked like they were maybe in middle school. All that to say I had a terrible experience and will not be bringing About Music anymore business. read more

What a fantastic gem of a music store! Great instruments streaming through, both vintage and new, acoustic and electric guitars, upright and electric basses, mandolins, amps, and more. Entering the store, you'd think you have entered a cozy living room. Instruments line the walls and Robert (the owner - who is often In the back giving a lesson) will come out and warmly greet and invite you in. Take a look around! He is frank, knowledgeable, and generous with his knowledge. It's clear that he has taken time to offer quality instruments for people of all budgets. My daughter had her electric set up by About Music and it sounds and plays beautifully. We don't live in Indy but I do come through often and when I do, I always make it a point to visit the shop. read more

Robert is very knowledgeable. I like taking my equipment to someone who isn't a big box store and will give me good information instead of just trying to make a quick sell. Example: I wanted a Tremolo put on a guitar and Robert said the instrument was beautiful and he would not recommend that. He would have made some good money on the service for this, but was willing to give good advice about the overall effect this would have on the value of the instrument. I used him to do a setup on a couple of guitars and he does an amazing job. He can hold a guitar for a couple of minutes and know exactly what needs to be done. read more

This place has a tremendous selection of guitars, basses, mandolins, and banjos. The store is very small and was shocked to see their selection. I also found that they had a ton of sheet music and instruction books. The man who worked in the store, whose name I cannot remember, was very friendly, informative, and gave me a very fair trade on a guitar. read more
