My father knew Amos Arthur well and our family has done business with this establishment since the 1950s. I have bought two Martin guitars here and have had them set up/tweaked by their luthier. They have always dealt fairly with us. I recently bought an acoustic amp, a soundhole pickup and a cord and Emily was very helpful and patient as she assisted me in making my purchase. This place is amazing!!! I've always wanted to go - local music store that's been around like 75 years. We got an antique guitar but needed strings. The staff were amazing about walking us through the options for strings. Then they educated us on how to put in strings and providing a lot of other education. For the record, I'm not a musician. So I'm not one to ever venture into music stores. However, I tagged along with my husband to come here the day after Christmas. They were having a huge sale, and he was looking for a bass guitar strap. I just wanted out of the house for a few minutes. So as we're in the middle of covidtimes, they had an employee sitting at the door, greeting us, offering up hand sanitizer, and making sure everyone who enters wears a mask. We poked around all the different levels of the store to see what they have available, which is pretty much everything. They have new stock as well as used and items on consignment. I noticed they also offer lessons on all sorts of instruments. The staff was busy buzzing around helping customers and were really friendly. I sat down on a bench while my husband waited his turn at the register. The two ladies behind the counter were incredibly knowledgeable as they spoke to the customers at the register. It was impressive to watch. My husband generally goes to Sam Ash, because it's super close to our house. He really liked the vibe at Arthur's Music Store though, and will definitely be giving them some love with future purchases. read more

I love this place! Recently my guitar player had his home broken into and had some of his gear stolen. The piece of trash that stole it then immediately sold it to an unsuspecting individual (who had no idea it was stolen) That person happened (by sheer luck) to bring the guitars into Arthur's and immediately they recognized the gear. They called my guitar player to let him know that the guitars were brought in, and let's just say the man who bought them was an ANGEL, and gave my guitar player back his guitars! Arthur's is a pivotal staple in this city, the people that run it and their staff will make you feel like family, and as a musician I can tell you there is no place else I would buy gear, or take my gear to than Arthur's! I bought a guitar and started working online to re-learn to play it. It has been 50 years since I even held a guitar! I took my guitar in and Emily changed the strings to lighter strings (easier for beginners to play.) This place is a hidden gem. I usually go to sam ash, (and guitar center when I'm desperate,) but I stumbled upon this place last week and I am pleasantly surprised with how amazing it was. First I'll get the bad part out of the way.... the location isn't amazing. Other than that i have no complaints whatsoever. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. They let me play the instruments i wanted and even tuned them up for me as I was looking at them. I ended up picking up a banjo and will most likely be going back this weekend to pick up another one. This store has been THE go-to for professional musicians for at least 3 generations, and they are awfully nice to folks who are hobbyists at best. They changed guitar strings, and had a great repair done on an old guitar that was (I thought) mostly a sentimental heirloom. But Amy had done a bit of research and found out that the sentimental heirloom had some decent value, too. They are keeping customers safe during this time with mask rules, but also with huge extra air cleaners that they had running during their big sale. But if I'm purchasing a piece of equipment that I'm taking on the road 150+ days a year, it's important to me that the store I purchase it from have a first rate repair facility that will take care of me if one of the tools of the trade is damaged, and Arthur's has proven itself again and again to me. You'll get friendly, professional service. And, if you don't know exactly what you want or need, they'll lend a friendly and non biased ear, and are able to make good recommendations on gear for you. I've seen many of the reviews on here and have to say they are completely wrong! I have been going to Arthur's Music Store since I was roughly 11 years old. The prices are great, go to another music store here in Indy and try to find a violin at the same prices they offer here. Aside from the prices the lessons they offer with the instructors are phenomenal. All of the instructors are great and incredibly talented. I have taken violin lessons, my little cousin took guitar and piano, and my grandfather took violin lessons. They sell high quality products at fair prices. Not only that, but they offer a wide range of instruments everything from strings and woodwinds to percussion. Absolutely amazing!! read more

The staff was great and its a local buisness which is great! The problem is this places selection and prices. I understand mom and pops have to pay more for thier stock then chain which can buy in bulk but come on! EVERYTHING was marked up. And not just a little. I feel for first timers who go in here not knowing what a reasonable price is. I hear thier lessons are top notch but also expensive. If shopping is about the experiance more then the price tag and selection, then this is your music store. If not, put up with the bad service at guitar center and pay about half the money. read more

I give Arthur's five stars because they're everything I need in a music store. They have a good selection of guitars, mandolins, banjos, & other stringed instruments. They have accordions, clarinets, drums, and so many others I can't even list them. They've got music books, instrument cases, and accessories. I try to support local business as much as possible. However, I can't really afford much at Arthur's. I'll buy drumsticks, but their prices are almost double on drum heads compared to Guitar Center. I cant stand going to GC, but I also need to pay the bills. They seem to focus more on stringed instruments, so they may have better prices on those items and accessories. The staff is very friendly and they seem to do great with music lessons. Glad to have them in the neighborhood! read more

I have been dealing with Arthur's since 1962 when I bought my first Fender guitar, a Jazzmaster and a Concert Amp. After being away from music for a while I went back to Arthur's to buy my black Fender Stratocaster and Fender Hot Rod Deluxe Amp. In my opinion you can't do better as far as music stores. I've seen others post that their prices are high and that's just not true. If you mail order something, you don't know what you're really going to get. Add in shipping and insurance and you don't really save much if anything. When you go to Arthur's you can try out the instruments and know exactly what you're getting. Great staff, great instruments, great prices, what more do you want? read more

They offer a great variety of instruments at various price point (ukuleles, banjos, mandolins, acoustic guitars, electric guitars, basses, percussion, and so much more). This joint is an example of the classic mom and pop music shop many of us can remember (what is becoming extinct). The staff is very friendly, laid back, and incredibly knowledgable. The really shine in their instrument lessons and staff quality/diversity of offerings (bluegrass, jazz, rock, or even vocal lessons). Tuesday night bluegrass jams get a great turnout. My experience has been mixed with this music store. I regularly purchase mainly mid range vintage and new guitars from both individuals and brick and mortar stores across the country and Canada. Generally, you can expect a higher level of professionalism from a music store, but this is definitely not the case here. One of the guitars purchased @ ~4-5K price range was not evaluated accurately (wrong date) and the nut fell off on the first string change. This leaves an immediate negative impression. Best to steer clear (explore the online and higher prestige stores) or at least set the right expectation and make no assumptions before making a purchase at this rural music store and trust your own knowledge and skill to compensate for the sloppy overall processes here. read more

The owners are great people. Not only are they knowledgeable and kind, they also responded very quickly to e-mails concerning someone who claimed (falsely) to be an employee of theirs, who was making ugly racist statements. The owners were quick to clarify that those views are NOT their views, nor was that person their employee. They didn't have to care or respond, but they did, and I feel that shows great integrity and genuine concern for the entire community. I took a guitar into this store due to a buzz on one of the strings, and to have a bone nut installed. They suggested a string change also (although the strings on the guitar were a week old) After a week, they called and said they had it "playing like butter". I told them I still wanted a bone nut put on. Two weeks later, i picked the guitar up. No bone nut, string were wrapped around the post 6-8 times each (I'd say a 7y old could do a better job) and then clipped off about 1/4 inch leaving some nice fungi sticks. The buzz issue was never resolved and was still there. They shaved the saddle and called that a "set-up" I had to take the guitar to another shop for correction. All this place did was pick my pocket. I'll never darken their doorway again. read more

A good ol' mom and pop guitar/music store that's been around forever with a ton of cool history. The selection sometimes feel a little lacking for guitars (for example, they are not an authorized fender dealer) but they do usually have some more unique brands like Gretsch, Reverend, Hagstrom and a good selection of acoustics like like Martin and Seagull. The reason I like this store so much is they usually have a rotating selection of used or consignment guitars that range from old/vintage Gibsons, Martins, Rickenbackers, Kay, Silvertone, etc. and it's always worth checking in every 2-3 weeks to see what's new. I impulsively bought a consignment Larrivee acoustic that has since been my favorite guitar I've ever owned. I also bought a Reverend signature Pete Anderson T-style guitar which they were able to order direct from Reverend in a different color (from the one they had in stock). The amp/pedal selection is again limited, but they still have some pretty cool Vox or Peavy amps to check out. This review is mostly guitar centered, but they have a ton of folk and traditional instruments to check out if that's your jam. The staff is great! Support local! read more
