I want to highly recommend Maria Molina as a personal trainer at the Bay Club, Marin. I initially…read morestarted working with Maria to recover from a knee injury. I wanted to strengthen my leg muscles so that I could return to playing tennis. As someone who is over 80 yrs old, I was somewhat skeptical that weight training could make a big difference in my athletic abilities but one year and half later of training with Maria and I believe I'm more physically fit than I was in my 40's. Everything is easier (i.e., walking up stairs, carrying heavy loads, keeping up with grandkids ,etc.) To say my quality of life has improved due to my work with Maria is an understatement, Maria is a consummate professional. She explains exercises clearly, pays attention to form and keeps sessions motivating and enjoyable. One day when I was lifting weights on my own at the gym, a gentleman commented, "I see that you are experienced with weight lifting, Your form is perfect. You must have been doing this for many years." I give Maria full credit for teaching me the right (safe) way to lift. I occasionally have a few sore muscles but recovery is quick after a workout. Probably the most important thing I've learned from Maria is to believe in myself. Sometimes she tries a new exercise that I think is impossible for me to achieve, let alone master. Her confidence is unwavering and has a profound effect on my mental attitude. I see few women my age working out with weights at the Bay Club. I hope this review will encourage someone who is considering personal training to contact Maria. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish with her expert guidance.

On my tour, the employee was so nice, but the facility itself was a big turn off. Bay Club is a catch all gym, from kids and teens running in the halls, to older ladies that never sweat but wear their teeny outfits while they hit on young guys, to rude people sweating all over equipment and not wiping it down after. The vibe gave me the icks. The women's locker room was dirty, with wet towels and trash scattered about. The members don't keep the area clean, and the staff isn't quick enough to clean up these gross items left strewn about. Needless to say, I didn't join Bay Club.

And NO ... there is no shooting range here as it is in the city limits of San Rafael. But with a pier that goes a few hundred yards into the bay, it's hard to beat for fishing or just a picnic over the bay. The website says about its history: Founded in 1926, the Marin Rod and Gun Club is one of California's premier outdoor sporting clubs. The club was formed for the purposes of conservation, preservation and propagation of fish and game in Marin County, the State of California and the United States. We have grown from our original membership of 35 to over 1200 active members. We are still tops for conservation. From their website it states: Membership is extremely affordable and gives exclusive, year round access to the clubhouse, bar, fishing pier, BBQ patio and boat ramp. You will also be able to attend member only events throughout the year. Visit the Club any day of the week between 12:00PM and 6:00PM to take a tour, meet a few members and pick up an application. You can also CLICK HERE to download the membership application form and return via email to office@marinrodandgunclub.com. You can also drop off in person. Your membership requires the sponsorship of two actve members. If you do not know any members just come by the club from 12:00PM to 4:00PM to introduce yourself and meet our membership. We are a volunteer powered organization and members are expected to contribute their available time and valuable talent. Many hands make light work. Once your application is submitted you will be contacted by our membership chair for a candidate interview and then upon approval of the board attend your initiation ceremony at the next scheduled general membership meeting. The facility is always clean, the equipment is modern and well-maintained, and there's plenty of space so it never feels overcrowded even during busy hours. The locker rooms are also really nice and kept in great condition. One of the highlights of this location is the staff. Everyone is friendly and welcoming, and you can tell they genuinely care about creating a good environment for members. Nick in particular stands out. He's always helpful, professional, and brings great energy to the gym. Whether it's answering questions or just making people feel welcome. Additionally, Fitness SF outperforms the local competition; five points fitness, body kinetics, and the bay club all have worse hours, higher prices, and worse equipment (significantly worse regarding five points) If you're serious about building your physique, or just want a high quality, friendly environment to work out in, this gym is right for you If you or anyone you know truly believes an alternative gym in Marin is better than Fitness SF, your IQ is most likely lower than your bench. BUT! That's ok! Switch to Fitness SF and our community and equipment will get you right, physically and mentally. I know for a fact if you come here for just one month you'll never want to switch back to your old gym. Overall, its a fantastic place to work out. Great equipment, great atmosphere, and great staff. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a quality gym in the area. Oh and I almost forgot we've got some wonderful massage chairs for post lift relaxation.

Membership is mostly all adults with occasional teens, so no horseplay with kids running around as is the case at the Marin YMCA, which I've also been a member at over the years. I think it's a pretty good value for what you get, and the owner seems to replace/upgrade some equipment each year. Never overly crowded and can usually get through a workout at your own pace without having to wait for a machine or weight area to free up. The outdoor "gym" is nice to have for a change of pace, too, especially when the weather is good (quite frequently in Marin!). There are a ton of classes to sign up for whatever you're into: Zumba, cycling, pilates, personal training, etc. and some are free with the membership. Good sauna, but it would be really great if the steam room was working, which it hasn't since I've been a member. Also refreshing that there are no "towel Nazis" monitoring the towel allocation when I head to the shower. Nice to have a convenient parking lot to park in (although whoever owns it really really really needs to repave it and increase the lighting; it's pretty dark in the lot at night, and if I were a woman I'd be a little nervous walking to my car. Location-wise, it's very convenient with the added benefit you can go get a (light!) beer at Pond Farm after your workout! All in all, I highly recommend Body Kinetics. I've only been to the San Rafael fitness center so can't comment on the other locations. BK is not Equinox or Bay Club, but it has all you really need at an affordable price.

It's low key, quiet, people don't bug you, the equipment is top and well cared for. The classes are varied and there's a time for everyone. I've barely scratched the surface of possible workouts here- in 6 mos. They have Pilates for an additional fee to members but it's a deal in and of itself- there are weights in a semi private room as well as throughout the gym and I love the women's sauna in the very clean locker room. Super nice and helpful staff. I'm happy.

It's just a charming, off-the-beaten-path setting. Yet it's still close enough to downtown Mill Valley. The weather's always sunny. It never gets too windy. The courts are all well-maintained. The members are very Marin (but without the snooty attitude that you find at other clubs). They have a very cozy/casual clubhouse, complete with a full bar, kitchen, TV room, and ping pong table. It looks more like a camp clubhouse from the 70s. But that's kind of its charm. They have plenty of couches by the windows so you can watch matches on their two center courts while nursing a beer. Since it's a private club, they don't allow outside guests to purchase drinks (unless they're purchased by a member). I thought that was a bit strange. I even offered to pay cash, but they couldn't do it. However, for some reason, it was ok for me to pay by credit card (you figure that one out). That being said, the lady working the bar was very sweet and poured a tasty margarita. All in all, Mill Valley Tennis Club is a lovely addition to Marin County's recreational community, and I look forward to playing there again soon.
