I've been on a long journey that started with Western medicine and dealing with autoimmune disease. Specifically Graves' disease. Through all of this, not one of my doctors could tell me anything about the root causes or triggers of my auto immune disease. Through talking with her and the treatment I feel like I gained a better understanding of how I hold stress in my body. While receiving the treatment I had a memory of my father from childhood and a way that he held his body when he was concentrating that my sister and I used to laugh about. I realized, in that moment that I had the exact same stress holding patterns as my father. I think that after this treatment I have had better access to noticing when these neuro pathways are activated and being able to "hit the reset button " which usually involves slowing down and taking some deep breaths. I found Abundant Health after I scheduled with a practice in the Peninsula. I was a bit concerned when that practice shared how they billed their services "in order to get paid" from insurance. I was referred to Abundant Heaven, specifically to see Michael Brown thru a good friend. I was very skeptical at first about acupuncture and extremely nervous because I'm deathly afraid of needles. My lower back pain after a series of physical therapy sessions and and epidural shot in my lower back did not help much with my lower back pain. It was very temporary. So after much deliberation with myself I decided to try acupuncture at Abundant Heaven with Michael as my doctor. First and foremost, Michael has such a calming demeanor and was so very understanding and patient of my anxiety of needles and being claustrophobic he made me feel so at ease that I could let my guard down and was finally open to trying acupuncture. I am a personal trainer and although I don't have any major health issues, I was curious about acupuncture. So I decided to try out Michael's services. Michael was very professional and his demeanor very calm and friendly. The only health issue I had was tiredness and Reynolds syndrome. I had a spinal fusion (lower back L4-5) about 8 years ago. The surgery was successful, meaning I am able to function fairly normally, albeit, not without some residual chronic lower back pain. I began relying on ibuprofen as my drug of choice to relieve the pain. Some days I could get by on as few as two 200 mg tablets first thing in the morning to get going. Other days I would exceed the maximum daily dosage of six 200 mg tablets, often taking the equivalent Motrin dosages of 800mg twice in a day. I know the dangers of taking NSAIDs over time, and it concerned me just how much ibuprofen I needed to manage my chronic back and joint pain. I had read about the pain relieving effects of accupuncture, and had the opportunity to give it a try with Michael Brown, L.Ac. MTCM. I echo Pauline N's experience with Michael -- professional, calm, explaining each step. In addition, I was impressed with the detailed patient interview process -- I never get to spend as much time discussing my health with my primary care physician. At the end of the first interview, Michael recommended two herbal formulas along with accupuncture treatments for my situation. Each appointment begins with the patient interview process, discussing any changes from the last treatment, improvements, new concerns, etc. Treatment is customized for the individual. From the first accupuncture treatment about a month ago, I noticed a difference in my lower back and knee joint pain. I no longer needed to start the day with two ibuprofen. As a matter of fact, I have not had a single ibuprofen since I began treatment. That is not to say I am completely pain free, but I am much improved, and I can get up in the morning and NOT need to take ibuprofen to get going. I have had more and more "good" days with little back pain. During my last two treatments, while lying on the table, needles in, I felt "release" sensations in my lower back. After each session, I am extremely relaxed. My sleep has also improved from getting about 4-5 hours a night before treatment to 6-7 hours a night after beginning treatment. My educational and work background for 25 years was in the sciences and traditional western medicine. However, through my work experiences and exposure to numerous medical conventions, studies and publications, some regarding eastern medicine, I have always been open-minded towards the practice of accupuncture and herbal medicine. This was my first experience with acupuncture and I must say I was surprised! I didn't really know what to expect. I had been having a TMJ flare up and after 3 treatments, it is so much better -like 95% better! I usually have to take tons of ibuprofen for flare ups and this flare up was worse than I'd ever had. Amazing experience. I have never had acupuncture before but I was having a exhausting vertigo episode and I wasn't getting any help from my DR. Jessica and Michael are wonderful! They are very welcoming and always willing to answer questions and do different things based on how I'm feeling at each visit. Their work, especially Jessica's, has changed my life. I came to Jessica after a year of chronic back pain that nothing seemed to help. I had tried physical therapy, over the counter pain medications and once the doctors figured out I had bulging discs corticosteroids- both pills and an epidural. Nothing worked. When I came to them I was desperate and willing to try anything. I highly recommend Jessica. I had severe back pain over the past month and also suffered from coccyx pain for the last eight years.
