Experience a charming visit just a short walk from the main sights at AC Carlton. You'll have to stroll a bit to jump in the Cibelas Fountain, but isn't that still worth it? The rooms are spacious or smaller, depending on your selection, but you'll have friendly service and a nice breakfast to kick off your Madrid excursions. My jumbo rainfall shower/tub contraption was special; not sure if I just got lucky. And Nespresso machines are always a nice touch. The huge Parque de el Retro is so close you can't miss it, and the train is even closer. So save a little €€ on your hotel room to spend on Spanish Ham, and I'll look for you on my return visit. read more

I'll start by saying that I hate when Americans travel and demand the convenience they're used to in the States--objectively, that's not the case with my experience at this hotel. I travel a lot and I stay in Marriott properties every time I can because the quality is always consistent and the higher prices are typically worth a good night's sleep. That proved not to be the case with this hotel. The staff, although mostly friendly and kind, were wildly unhelpful when it came to an air conditioning issue we had in our room. Come to find out it was an issue in a lot of rooms. In the middle of the night after the "staff weren't able to fix the AC in our room," they ended up moving us to another room without AC--not sure why they thought that would fix the problem, but we tried to sleep for a few hours and then eventually just returned to our original room without AC because it was even hotter in the new room they gave us. Nevertheless, you should get working air conditioning after paying €300/night for a room (a very nice and spacious room for Madrid I might add). Considering the temperature outside was so high during our stay, opening the windows to the noisy city streets below the hotel did not prove to be beneficial. We toughed out the heat (see attached photo for the range of what our thermostat consistently read), but we were not able to sleep as we were just sweating profusely in bed all night long. Truly a miserable hotel experience. When I asked for some financial break for our stay, the hotel offered a very minimal discount on my nightly rate saying that the issue wasn't that big of a deal, and there was nothing else that they could do. Not having AC in a modern hotel during a heat wave is a pretty big problem in my opinion. I'll add that the hotel lobby was very pleasant and air conditioned--perhaps we should have just brought our pillows and blanket down to the lobby and slept on the floor? I'm open to editing this review if the hotel manager is willing to fairly compensate us for the issues we had during our stay. Other than the air conditioning issue, this is a pretty nice hotel. Not worth €300/night even if the air conditioning was working properly, but again usually Marriott properties are worth the price tag because they deliver on consistence, comfort and quality--this hotel did not. read more

Overall, a reasonably nice hotel near lots of attractions in Madrid. It's less than 5 minutes walk from the Atocha train station which gives you a route from the airport (take C-1, C-10, not Metro) with no transfers to/from the airport for €3.10 each way. The Reina Sofia is a few minutes walk away and the cute pedestrian-only areas are maybe 10-15 minutes walk. Rooms are reasonably spacious with the usual closet and drawer space, a small mini-fridge with things to purchase but there's a little room for personal items. Decor is tastefully modern, not gorgeous but I don't expect that at this price range. I just like it to be inoffensive, at least, which this definitely qualifies. Air conditioning seemed to work well, once I found the thermostat. Bed, bedding, and pillows were comfy, wifi seemed reliable, and there were these things you could put down over the windows to block out most light. I got a 'quiet room' (i.e. facing tiny interior courtyard). I was grateful for all of this, given the late hours I was going to be up. There was a nice desk if you have a laptop though it would have been nice to have a not-occupied electrical outlet on that desk. My only nit for the room is that I could have used some hooks on the walls for coats and random things, especially near the entry door. Bathrooms: clean, functional, modern, and surprisingly spacious. The shower had good pressure, good temperature, housekeeping did daily refreshes of towels and other items. Sometimes I could detect a very slight scent of mildew but it was hard to place and wasn't a serious issue, and honestly, not unusual for hotels of this tier in this sort of climate. read more

This is a great hotel to stay for a few days in Madrid. The location is perfect to easily walk to a lot of places (20-30 minutes depending). The train station is only about 10 minutes which is great when you have your bag with you. The beds are very comfortable and the rooms are spacious. I like that there was a safe in our room as well. The staff here was welcoming and friendly. You can hear the people around you, but in a hotel that is to be expected and wasn't a disturbance. They have a restaurant, bar and breakfast buffet - however we did not eat here but rather enjoyed the food while out exploring. Overall this is a great choice! read more

Stayed here as both a work trip and fun with family. The hotel initially states no more than two to a room, but offers a rollaway bed option. It was undergoing construction on one of the floors but it literally never affected us (sight or sound). It's a modern European hotel decor wise. Downstairs the lobby doubles as it's "restaurant" of which we never partook. But we did frequent the morning breakfast buffet, which was great with lots of choices. The mega coffee/espresso machine was a big hit. I enjoyed the large selection of juices, fruits, meats and cheeses. Very positive note that the Juice was presented in glass carafes not some vending machine like in many US hotels. Only negative was the elevator situation. It has two but they are amazingly small which complicated movement with family and coworkers, but a minor thing for sure. read more

I returned to this hotel after staying there 2 years ago because the experience I had previously was great, BUT wish I had not. The way they handled my reservation was completely unprofessional and ruined what could have been an awesome last day in Madrid. I used a discount code provided by my company for leisure use. Tried to put my family into a big room but since there was none available, split us into 2 rooms both under my account and the rate was confirmed for both rooms with the only condition being I had to present proof of employment at the company. I am even on the phone with Marriott as I write this and the supervisor whom my complaint is escalated to agrees there are no restrictions on whether or not I should be able to apply it to both rooms as long as I show proof that I work at the company where the discount rate came from and I am part of the reservation. She also confirms that if there were errors or changes to the rate I should have been notified in advance. Now this is where this rogue, dishonest and deceiving hotel comes in. At check in, the front desk tells me "by the way Marriott changed the policy" and i will pay 300 more. I ask why I wasn't notified beforehand, and ask if she thinks it's fair to NOT let a customer know of a policy change especially since they had my reservation details all along, and the receptionist says "sorry but that's what we will do". this was past the cancellation deadline, i had traveled hours with an 80 y/o grandmother, which the hotel clearly saw and decided to hold me hostage while they had my passport already at front desk until i paid a ridiculous amount. In fact, the Marriott customer support line says they are not able to find any clear statement about this "policy change" this hotel insists on. If this was communicated properly in advance I would have gladly paid or looked for a different hotel. I ask for some common sense but it seems that's too much to ask from the hospitality industry. Everyone I've spoken to were incredibly unhelpful, including Rocie (unsure of spelling)who checked me in and tried to tell me what I was trying to commit "fraud", Mar, Dolores, Andrea, Uxoa. It's a shame not only on this hotel but Marriott as a whole. Located within a walking distance to the Atocha station, I stayed here one night before taking early Renfe train the next day. I think it was about 5-10 minutes walk. Check in was smooth. Elevator is very small. Depending on the size of your suitcase, may be one or two people. At least they have elevators here. Platinum amenities was equivalent to Courtyard hotel in the US. Complimentary upgrade based on availability and free bottle of water. No free breakfast included but they do serve breakfast. Since we had to depart early, I stopped by the grocery store the night before to pick up a few things. It was about a few minutes walk to a store. Junior suite was specious and comfortable. Shower was large with nice amenities. High speed internet was very fast, I was able to get a lot of work done before dinner. Check out was easy and we were on our way shortly. read more

This is our go to hotel on our several visits to Madrid. Located right next to the Atocha train station this hotel represents one of the best values for staying in any European hotel. Owned by Marriott the hotel is great to stay at not just because of location but also the room are very well decorated and the size of the room and bathroom is great and you don't feel cramped like at many hotels on the continent. Along with the rooms and location the breakfast offered in the morning is wonderful and I bet you won't be disappointed with picking up the breakfast buffet in the morning. The hotel is a short walk from the famous museums of Madrid and I have enjoyed my stay at the hotel a couple of times and this will be my first choice if available on our next trip to Madrid. read more

Very pleasant stay at this hotel. I was looking for a hotel close to Atocha station because I was taking Renfe into town. This hotel was a 5 minute walk from Atocha and a good location to Prado and Thyssen as well. The room was very clean. Nice hardwood floors. The mattress and pillows were super comfortable. The front desk staff was courteous and polite. The neighborhood seemed safe; walked around at night from a flamenco show and didn't encounter any sketchy people. The elevator is super tiny...can ft 2 people with some luggage. Not a deal breaker, just something to mention. I would stay here again and recommend this hotel. read more

I enjoyed my stay here at the AC Hotel in Madrid. Overall, the location is in walking distance from Retiro Park, Atocha Train Station, and Real Jardin Botanico. It's also minutes away from Metro Stations so you can access other areas of Madrid, including the airport, Royal Palace, etc. The rooms are pretty basic - you have your beds, TV, closer, coffee machine, and bathroom needs. We had a good nights rest after our international flight here. Our rate was around 99 euros for one night. Overall not bad and would not mind recommending this hotel to those that need a nice private stay in Madrid. Highly recommend if you're thinking about taking an early morning train from Madrid and want a place close by. read more

This hotel was pretty. Ask for a key to the safe when you check in. It is an old skeleton key, not a coded box... Cool if you don't have to go back to the front desk to get it. They didn't ask (and we had a native Spanish speaker with us so it wasn't miscommunication.) The rooms are lovely and they have washcloths in the bathroom as well--something you assume will be in a hotel but it was the first one in two weeks in Europe that did. (Funny, but not a deal breaker either way...) I didn't like that the light outside your room door goes off when you leave your room. Tells more than just the maid that you have left your room. Use the safe, lol. If you aren't a Marriott member, become one before arriving. You can have free internet if you are a member, but even so if you rent two rooms, your family will not have internet without their own membership except in the lobby (two codes per membership, no exceptions). So I stayed here for 3 nights and 1 night at the AC Atocha (there are 2 and are relatively close to each other! I will be rating both: LOCATION: While this is definitely the better location of the two, you are still in the Atocha area. This hotel is steps from the Reina Sofia Museum. It is a good location for being in Madrid, whether you are walking, taking the metro or cabbing it. It's about a nice 10 minute walk to the Prado Museum and 30 minute walk to Sol and other squares! ROOMS: the rooms are small. I had a connectivity issue with my room (504), which was a standard room. They moved me to a Superior room (312), which was a lot larger and was equipped with a jacuzzi tub. There really aren't great views in any of these rooms, so I would just ask for a room with good wifi. You can sometimes hear your neighbor in the standard rooms but only in the foyer area. They have placed an opaque sliding glass door that, when shut, takes care of any noise problem. I am pretty sensitive to noise and I had no issues! SERVICE/STAFF: very attentive and very welcoming. They appeared to e genuine and enjoyed their jobs. There was one guy who was in training and was eager to assist in providing tips on where to go and also was very nice in customer service skills. BREAKFAST: worth it if included! A great selection of meats and cheese and fruit. Also cereals, good juices and a variety of things that will make you full for your day in Madrid. I definitely recommend this clear and great boutique hotel with nice staff and good location and value! You just can't go wrong here! read more

My first stop in Madrid. I wasn't used to Europe, so my first experience was trying to fit me and my suitcase in the elevator at the same time. I got a room on the 7th floor, then switched to one on the 1st floor after figuring out the wifi doesn't work for rooms high up. I have no idea why it was like that. Anyways, friendly staff here, most of them with very good English. The location is okay, within reasonable (although not super close) walking distance of the Plaza Mayor, Plaza del Sol, and the Royal Palace. Other attractions like the Museo del Prado are closer. Lots of small shops, markets, and restaurants just outside the hotel. It's very close (pretty much next to) the Atocha train station, so the transportation in and out is very good. If you intend to take the train to Atocha and walk to the hotel, I suggest you take a good look at the map of how to get there as the streets all look the same, and sometimes street names aren't always easy to find. read more

I recently stayed at the AC Carlton when I was visiting Madrid for work. I really liked the hotel and it was nice. The staff were very friendly. I really liked the location of this hotel, because it was a short walk to pretty much a lot of major things and lots of restaurants and food locations. The rooms were pretty big. In traditional European nature they had two twin beds pushed together to make one big bed. I do not like this, but will know for the future. The rooms are big and each one comes with a mini bar. The bathrooms are really nice with a big shower/tub and you can turn on music in the bathroom. Also the bathrooms have a phone inside of them as well. The price was not bad for a weekend stay. I think this place has a lot of positive things going for it! I would for sure recommend this hotel! read more

BEWARE - BED BEGS. On August 27 I checked in to Room 002 at the AC Hotel Carlton Madrid. I awoke the following morning covered, and I do mean COVERED, from face to toe in bug bites. My doctor confirmed these bites are consistent with bed bugs. See attached photos for the devastation to my arms and face, as well as distinct confirmation from bites on my torso that the bites follow the three-in-succession pattern for which bed bugs are notorious. I informed hotel management of my experience and was told "The housekeeping team checked the room and they have not found any bugs." Can you imagine putting your faith in a hotel that claims the presence or absence of bed bugs can be confirmed by a plain sight evaluation conducted by a housekeeping team, and not pest control professionals??? Bed bugs are invisible to the human eye in two of their five life cycle stages. Do not stay here. This experience has caused me extraordinary financial, professional, and emotional damage. The dozens upon dozens of bites keep me up all night and require prescription strength topical cream for daily pain management. There are plenty of hotels in the area that will uphold their commitment to cleanliness and hospitality. Marriott AC Carlton is not one of them. read more

This hotel boasts a great location, close to a major train station, nice museum, large park and botanical garden and decent shops and restaurants. Its lobby is modern and spacious, with comfortable chairs and Wifi, along with an espresso bar and full bar. The rooms include a free mini bar and toiletry kits. The positives end there. The rooms are quite cramped and suffer from a poor use of space (our bathroom was more than half the size of our room). The building materials of this hotel also lend new meaning to the phrase "thin walls." I could hear plumbing noises of all kinds from adjacent rooms and rooms overhead as well as footsteps and talking. If you decide to book a room here, be sure to bring your ear plugs. read more

I would really rate it about 3.5 stars but, since that is not an option, I feel it's closer to the 3, than the 4...The location is really good. We took a taxi there from the airport, more so because even though the reviews said it's close to the Atocha train station, I am pregnant so we weren't sure exactly HOW close...plus didn't know where to get the train from the airport...needless to say, it is REALLY close to the train station--which we used to get back to the airport. We were only in Madrid for a day, so this was a good hotel to stay in for a short stay. We walked everywhere. It is only a couple of minutes from the Reina Sofia museum, and about a 10 minute walk to Prado. We pretty much explored Madrid on foot--from the hotel, even to the palace, and Plaza Mayor. So again, great location, and friendly staff. Wi-fi is slooooooooooow, and the elevator and rooms are small. Nothing luxurious, but a nice place to lay your head. Glad we used Marriot points though. Reminds you of something like a Courtyard in the states. read more

If I were to come back to Madrid again, I would probably try another Marriott instead of this one. Don't get me wrong; there are plenty of good things going for this hotel. The rooms are nice and spacious; the beds are clean (in fact the entire room is very clean). They are non-smoking by default, and the maids clean up fast the rooms. My main gripe is with the front desk personnel and their lack of training in customer service. For those that know me, customer service is a very important factor in my reviews. First of all, Marriott needs to train the front desk personnel to more properly recognize lifetime elites. Honestly, these people stayed at Marriott sometime upward of 2-3 years of their life and upkeep elite status for a decade. These people spent a lot at Marriott. Please treat them with respect and give them the proper welcome gifts as promised by the guidelines. Another thing that this hotel lacked was Internet the first night we checked in. In 2018, this is not acceptable. Technology has gone a long way, and this hotel needs to keep up. In the end, Marriott Reward, in its usual fast and dependable fashion, fixed everything for me with this hotel. read more

I'll start off saying that the staff is very friendly, helpful and accommodating. But the staff does not design the interior nor plan out the hotel or room layout. Problem number one - a somewhat dangerous main entrance: it is a large automatic revolving door, on the corner of the building. When you arrive in blinding sun, you cannot see past the door's glass panes. I was hauling a heavy suitcase, with a duffel bag on top of it, and got stuck in the door. As I was fighting the door, and progressing towards the lobby, I almost fell off the steps - which are practically at the edge of the revolving as you enter the lobby. That was not a good start. There is no ramp to roll down a suitcase, so beware as you plan your stay. Problem number two - very noisy hallways: don't know if it's because a large tourist group checked in, but the stomping down the halls and loud voices outside the door and behind the walls carried well past midnight. Other Problem number three: awful hard mattresses! Torturous sleep: felt like a plank of wood. Other CONS: the room lighting is too dim, and insufficient. The lighting in the bathroom is absolutely prohibitive to attempting to apply make-up: I can't help but think that no females were on the interior decor team! The color scheme is quite dark, and the property is all about stark lines. The lobby is somewhat on a small side, with a compact bar stand attended by staff in the evening. There is a restaurant on site, which will serve you in the lobby. But the lobby was usually quite full, as guests were using complimentary Wi-fi: else, you have to pay, is accessed from the room - BUT due to the Wi-Fi set up, it's only available on the lower 2-3 floors. PROS: as mentioned, attentive & helpful staff. Complimentary mini-bar with a variety of soft drinks, replenished daily. Very good central location within walking distance of the Atocha train station, metro and some key attractions. A mini-mart / convenience store is one block away, if you have a craving for chocolate and none handy. ;-) read more

The only reason I won't give it more stars is because the mattresses are very hard. Not the usual heavenly beds I am used to from the Marriott brand. Otherwise this hotel is well situated, friendly helpful staff, the rooms are very comfortable especially be European standards. Our breakfast was included in the price option we chose, and it was a great spread. Scrambled eggs, English bacon (Which is by far less fatty than the American version), a variety of fruits (fresh and dehydrated), yogurts, pastries, breads, cold cuts and waiter service for coffee. Air conditioning was also a deciding factor and came in very handy as we were in Spain during a heat wave in a city where a/c is scarce. Free wifi in the public areas was nice, although it is available ensuite for 15€ per 24 hours. I would come back because of its location, the staff and the aesthetics of the place. read more

Tons of eggs, meats, fruits, mushrooms, and more - Rooms are decent in size, clean - Safe uses a key (not a code) - Very close to Atocha Renfe (the bullet train to Barcelona) CONS: - The walls are thin - you can hear everything: people copulating, yelling, crying, etc. - The soap sucks - it's formed like a golf ball and rolls everywhere... and they only give you one so make sure to ask for another - There is usually only ONE person in the front. It can be a long wait at some points. Overall: We had a great experience there. The staff is amazing there (Julio was great!). I would definitely stay at the AC Carlton again. Overall decent hotel. Great front desk staff - very helpful and friendly. Location is close to metro station, walking distance to Reina Sofia and the Prado. Rooms are decent - although I made the mistake of walking around barefoot after my shower - not pretty! They have a sliding door in the hall between the main room and bathroom to block out noise from the main hallway; helps a bit. I did have free WiFi in my room, but it may be because I am an Elite Marriott member. Rooms are spacious, beds were comfortable and plenty of room for clothes and personal items. Close to grocery stores to get water/fruit/snacks. The cons: limited restaurants in walking distance. The few by Reina Sofia are overpriced and not good. Hotel was not helpful in finding other places around, so do some research before you go. They charge for PC access in the lobby which I thought was tacky - I have seen that in lower star hotels, but not in a Marriott property. Walls are paper thin - I was woken several times by the people next to me having conversations at 1 or 2 AM - it was like they were in my room. So, bring earplugs. Heat/AC did not work - the room was always very very warm, but thankfully windows can be opened which helped. Limited english stations (CNN, CNBC, Bloomberg). I would definitely stay here again but request an end room to cut down on noise. read more

Solid 4 star property of AC hotels now Marriott/Starwood. Very close to Atocha rail station. From the airport, take the "yellow bus" Express (5 Euros) to Atocha (last bus stop) and walk on take taxi to hotel. I stayed 8 nights with a Marriott Rewards membership rate that included breakfast and high speed Internet (via WiFi). Excellent buffet breakfast! Also when I checked in they were full to capacity so they were not able to upgrade me to a larger sized room (I'm a Marriott Rewards Platinum level guest) so I got free mini bar access, which was awesome. The hotel is a 10 minute leisure walk to Reina Sofía Museum, and 15-20 minutes walk to El Prado Museum, Thyssen Bornemisza Museums and other sites. Friendly and attentive service (I forgot to bring a voltage alternator, so the front desk gave me a bucket full of them yo chose from!!). The rooms are well appointed and of a good size for Madrid, recently renovated furniture and modern bathrooms. Very small elevators, though. Overall a really good price, quality and location combination. I highly recommend it! read more

There are quite a few things I would like to see fixed in this hotel, but for the most part it's a good solid place to stay. First off the elevators are so tiny any claustrophobic person would have serious issues. They fit maybe one person and one suitcase at a time (I'm dead serious). Secondly there are no locks on the washroom doors. This is the second time I've seen that and it doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Thirdly the gym is absolute garbage. One treadmill and a few weights that go up to 20 kg max. Really? Absolutely false advertising. Last of all, not offering free wifi and instead charging for 5€/day is really not my style. When hotels do that it really turns customers off and comes off as a seriously cheap attitude. Please, for god's sake offer free wifi, and have some mercy on your customers from out of town.
