They offer a variety of classes for being such a small school. The teachers really know what they are doing and are very knowledgable on their subject. My favorite part about South is their special education program. They are a small school, and they do a great job integrating the kids into the school by having them walk the hallways to class instead of keeping all the kids hidden away in a far-off hallway. They accept special needs kids from outside of their district and can take in kids from neighboring Glenbards. Also, GBS has a variety of sports (their football team is something to brag about) and extracurriculars for kids to do, and many kids do more than one thing. I personally was on the dance team, key club, spanish club, and best buddies and had a great time on all of them. As for the kids, I'd say MOST of them are nice. It's such a small school, so there will be a lot of cliques. Coming in the middle of my Junior year was not ideal, but the kids in my grade were really welcoming and I ended up making a lot of friends that year and even more in my senior year as I got to know everyone. There are lots of active extracurriculars in a variety of fields, including some (not sports) which regularly make it to State competitions. It is a bit clique-filled, but if you went to Glencrest (as 95% of the population here did) it shouldn't be a problem, as you'll have found a group to talk to already. Even if that isn't the case, it's not that difficult to fit in with a little effort, as the many extracurriculars can help you find people with similar interests. One star off for the administration- they started off not so bad, but now they're cracking down on harmless senior pranks, eliminating traditions because there's the slightest hint of danger, and pushing kids into AP classes they aren't prepared for and not letting them drop the classes when there's a problem. The missing star's also because the college advising is mediocre at best- if you want to go to U of I or COD, you're set. If you're interested in other state schools, or a few nearby privates, they can help. Otherwise, the counselors are clueless. Overall, though, this place was a great fit for me.

The school is mixed ages 5-18, they have a sliding scale depending on income and a flexible start time. Kids from all over the Chicago area attend. It's truly a special place!

I was a victim of his control tactics, which had a lasting emotional and psychological impact. As a student athlete, I started every game I played. I was eligible to play, but he would use my game participation as leverage for obedience. For instance, when I expressed things he disliked, he would prohibit me from going to games. He made decisions based on his ego rather than athletic or academic merit. The result was deliberate sabotage of both my development and the team's. Jacob is sadistic. I remember him mocking me about recruitment while interfering with my opportunities. He would sit me out during games that mattered. For a young athlete, this behavior was damaging and reckless. He uses psychological mind games, pressure, and humiliation when in power. Years later, he saw me in person and attempted to apologize. That moment confirms his awareness of the harm he causes. He often sings in the chapel and projects a likable image while being evil behind the scenes. The contrast between his presentation and conduct is conflicting. As of the date of this writing, December 22, 2025, he is still teaching at the school, which is disturbing. Currently, he is the chair of the school's Social Studies department. His egotistical behavior places students' mental health at risk. Based on my experience, he is unfit to hold power over children. Parents should be diligent to protect their children from his manipulation. There are stronger private school options for academics and athletics. You should continue searching for better schools. Your child's future depends on it.

Great faculty, support staff, athletics, extracurricular activities, facilities and most important, the curriculum is rigorous and challenges students. We plan to stay until 2028, his expected graduation date. Please know that Financial aid is also available for those in need. I highly recommend Walther Christian Academy in Melrose Park, IL. I'm a McAuley mom, but I admit I had serious misgivings when my daughter--after shadowing at a…read morenumber of other schools--insisted that she felt McAuley was "exactly right." McAuley was our rival school (I'm an AOL grad) and was, back in the day, noted for being snobby, clique-ish, and "fast." (But one never says nice things about one's rival, does one?) My main concern was that McA was so BIG and I felt--from hearsay--that its athletics program was its focus and my budding actress/writer/academic nerd would be lost. I am happy to say that I was WRONG. My daughter immediately found a group of very nice kids who were also grade-conscious. The drama dept (and this is coming from a Longwood alum, now-closed Longwood having had an A-one drama dept. for generations) put on professional productions. My daughter was nurtured and challenged and she found mentors who truly cared about helping her meet her goals, including a close friendship with a retired Sister of Mercy who has been a great emotional support to her. She loved every minute of her high school experience. Best of all, for my husband and me, is that McAuley reinforced our Roman Catholic values. Our daughter was given service opportunities and got a lot out of her Kairos retreat. The theology department is traditional in the best sense of the word: they demonstrate to the students how to live as followers of Christ. My daughter thrived at McAuley. She got into the college of her choice, and is starting this next phase of her life with humor, self-confidence and optimism. I am sorry that one of the other reviewers had such a bad experience at McA. I know that since she attended, the administration has changed, so maybe a lot of graduates made the same complaints which the new staff/admin has tried to address. But at least the reviewer will have some insight when she helps her children pick a school. I hope her kids have the same experience my daughter had, albeit at a different school.
