The pricing here is fair considering the knowledge of the mixologists...the venue could use a little sprucing up BUT for a prohibition style dive, it's amazing. It is not heavily advertised, the windows are boarded up and it's very nondescript even when the front door is open and they are slinging drinks. It feels like a members only kinda place. Great atmosphere, educated staff, unparalleled cocktails. It's nice having a more pricey space on Carson street because it keeps the "bro" college types away from the usually infested neighbourhood. The staff is very knowledgeable and they know their job. You can order something to eat from next door otherwise just drink the very well made cocktails. If I see a noticeable improvement in the service, this place will definitely deserve 5 stars. Sneaky, sneaky. It's pretty easy to miss this place if you're not paying attention. Our drinks were perfect. They can make you anything you want. If you're not leaning toward anything on their cocktail list, you can tell them what base liquor you want, what flavor profile you favor (sweet, citrus, fresh, etc), and they'll whip something up. For everyone who remembers Embury, this is the same owner. Spencer (the owner) didn't seem so keen on our group's arrival, a medium group of Asians on the younger side of the "of-age" spectrum. He was a bit curt with us, but obliged our questions, given the general ignorance of our crowd when it comes to cocktails. Not impressed with his attitude toward us, but definitely impressed with the drinks he made us. Especially impressive? A three-page whiskey menu, front and back. Amaaaazing. You can order one or two ounce samples, with prices ranging from $6 - $200, depending on what you order. (Cocktails are $10 + tip&tax [basically $15]) The interior is dimly lit, minimally decorated. Dark woods, bare vintagey-bulbs, suggestive of the seductive speakeasy aesthetic... but then the back room has an arcade game and a couple of dart boards...? Haha. A little inconsistent in decor, but unimportant. They were playing funk and soul, which was very welcome. I will definitely will be back here, since the drinks and the ambiance were definitely a welcome change from the typical Southside bars. However, it'd be nice if the owner would be a bit more courteous to his guests, even if those guests happen to be "fulfilling the stereotype". Those were his exact words to us after we apologetically asked him to take a few pictures of our group. Was he talking about Asians? Students? Southside bar hoppers? Not entirely clear at what he was suggesting, but obviously the intention of the remark was to ridicule. YES! This is the kind of place Pittsburgh needs more of! Loved the fact that if you arn't really looking for it you won't be able to find it. Walking in they have a very small front room, and apparently a back room that I didn't go to. We were greeted and sat at the bar. Overwhelmed by the drink menu, I asked the bartender for some help. He asked what I liked, and suggested the Rhus Juice. Oh my word, was it delicious! And I say that on the presumption that there were a few things in the ingredients list that I normally don't drink: cream and egg white. Both ingredients in most cocktails taste pretty poorly, BUT Acacia managed to make them simply divine! This is one of my favorite hidden gems -- all the more remarkable because it manages to be hidden in plain sight, right on East Carson Street. This drinks-only craft cocktail bar does have a few fans other than me, as one can see on any Friday or Saturday night when folks are packed three-deep at the bar, but on a Monday or Tuesday night? I open the door and it's like transporting back in time, to the brandy-and-cognac days of secret societies. Except it's non-smoking! The whiskey list is extensive, but the full capabilities of the bartenders here is downright encyclopedic. I can see how this is called a "speakeasy". But by no means is this a real speakeasy. If you've been out in NY or Chicago or any other large city, you'll know why. Service is nonexistent. Drinks are sugary sweet and imbalanced. The crowd resembles that of an Irish bar. The music is what you'll hear in dive bars. The 'chai' drink has no hint of chai. It's bourbon and Demerara sugar with some bitters. It seems to be the only option of its kind in Pittsburgh but save your $ and go to an actual speakeasy elsewhere. read more

I don't get it. Why are these drinks are so amazing? Apologies to all, but I wasn't impressed. Yes, they had somewhat fancy ingredients, and/or somewhat complicated preparations. So? They're not the only bar in town to have such drinks. They're good; they're not amaaaazing. More importantly, however, while drinking the "acceptable" drinks, I was uncomfortable. The interior is weird. The front has a few booths and feels really crowded. The back feels unfinished and detached from the front. When you walk back there, it's like you're at a party and you go to some back room to hide away from the pressure of it all, e.g., Jake Ryan in Sixteen Candles. The bartenders are okay. I thought one of them was nice and one of them was a bit pretentious... as if telling me that their "acceptable" drinks are too "acceptable" for me. This place and its cocktails are as beautiful as its name! We came here on a double date on a Tuesday night and shared the front room with two other gentleman who sat at the bar. After an hour or two, we ended up having the whole place to ourselves and had very pleasant chats with both the bartender and the owner (formerly of Embury before it closed in the Strip). The atmosphere is dim, cozy, and speakeasy-like. Cocktails are served in gorgeous and unique old-fashioned glasses. For example, my first cocktail came in an elegant champagne coupe with flowers etched into the glass. This is testament to the attention to detail that this bar pays to just about everything, from the glassware to the ice to the drinks themselves. Every cocktail we had was expertly crafted, even a "personalized" one that the bartender crafted on the spot for my boyfriend based on his requests. My favorite drink from this visit was the autumn sazerac, a delicious take on one of my favorite cocktails. It's worth mentioning that the bartender was extremely accommodating to our group, which was rather feisty that night! For example, he let the guys order one Dogfish 120-minute IPA between the two of them and happily split the drink into two glasses for them, and after they broke out into a heated debate about the merits of Dogfish 90-minute vs. Dogfish 120-minute, the bartender offered (unprompted) us a complementary glass of the 90-minute so that we could do a direct comparison. This was such a thoughtful and generous gesture that it really left an impression on us. In general, he was super jovial, helpful, and patient with our tipsy shenanigans! The owner was friendly as well and readily engaged in conversation with us, and the vibe was super laid-back towards the end of the night. They also have an incredible selection of bourbons, probably the best I've seen at any bar in the city. Many of them, like the awesome Willett Bourbons, you cannot purchase individual bottles of in Pittsburgh's liquor stores! The beer list is nice as well, and it's supposed to grow in the near future. I cannot comment on the atmosphere or attention to detail on a much busier night like Friday or Saturday, but my guess is that the quality of drinks would not be sacrificed (you might just have to wait longer to get one). But, at least for a weeknight, it was everything we wanted from a classic cocktail bar! read more

Great craft cocktails, featuring a lot of bourbon. Drink service is medium-slow, but that's mostly because they spend a lot of time getting drinks right instead of slinging bad drinks quickly. The door and windows are covered over; you have to look for it. That has an enormous benefit; it's intentionally only visited by people who specifically went there, and the hordes of roving drunks in the Southside miss this place entirely. I had also sampled a friends tequila mule which was heavenly and my other friends summer nog? Needless to say acacia is a very relaxed, take a load off atmosphere. Very mature and very enlightening. On Saturday night my friends and I were in the mood for a smart cocktail so we headed here around 9:30. The bar is small, but very warm, inviting, and comfortable. The main bar is in the front half of the space and is full of dark wood, low lights, 4-5 booths and a high table or two. There is a second room in the back which is suffering from somewhat of an identity crisis. It's lit by fluorescent lights and the glow from a golden tee machine and electronic dart boards. There are about 4 small tables lining the exterior of the room. Based on the attention to detail the owners paid in the front half of the bar I would imagine that the back half will soon be brought up to speed. The drinks, which is the main reason we came, are fantastic. I had one of their signature cocktails (all are $10) and an Old Fashion made with Bulliet bourbon ($7). Both drinks were not only delicious, but it was also fun watching the bartenders make them. These guys really know their way around a drink! I'm torn between three and four stars for two reasons: 1. Due to this bar's small size and increasing popularity it is very hard to find a spot to hang out in the front, finished half of this bar. This causes you to be pushed to back, unfinished half. A large part of the reason to come here is for the atmosphere, all of which is killed if you can't hang with the cool kids in the front of the bar. 2. Something has to be done about the music selection on the weekends. The last thing I want to hear while sipping a prohibition era cocktail is "Call Me Maybe". Now, I haven't been here on a weekday, maybe this isn't always an issue, but I'm sure that none of your weekend patrons will complain if you play a little jazz and make it easier to have a conversation. Went to Acacia last night with a friend. There were 8-10 people sitting at the bar, so we took a table. Despite the small number of people in the place, it took more than 10 minutes before the bartender came to the table. She never introduced herself. Then my friend spent an inordinate amount of time trying to order a special cocktail. The bartender was polite, professional and courteous attempting to guide my friend through the process -- to be fair, my friend was being difficult. Once they finally agreed on a drink, she turned to me. I told her "I'll be much easier. I don't drink. I'll just have a Red Bull." She apologised that they did not have Red Bull, but she could make me a mocktail. I assented and gave her the instruction: "Fruity, fizzy, and not too sweet." And she told me that's the kind of thing she likes. Before continuing, it should be noted: I am in the foodservice business. I often work as a bartender, and a frequently serve tables. I understand reality. I get things. I was not happy with our experience. The other bartender, a bearded gentleman, emerged from somewhere during the process of making our drinks. It was this gentleman who brought the drinks to our table and served us. Unfortunately, he placed the wrong drinks in front of each of us! Little to my knowledge, I picked up what was a very strong drink and took a HUGE GULP! I was *not* happy, to say the least. I tasted the mocktail, and was fairly certain that the mocktail had alcohol in it, also -- although I admit that my taste buds may have been "off" due to the first gulp. My friend also taste the mocktail, and he wasn't sure either that it was alcohol-free. When a guest says "I don't drink." or "I'm the designated driver.", that means MAKE DAMNED SURE THAT PERSON IS NOT SERVED ALCOHOL! Had they even cared slightly, then the one bartender would have told the other: "The mocktail goes to the guy on the right." During the course of our stay, neither bartender showed the gumption to stop by our table and ask if everything was OK. When we finished, I went to the bar to pay the cheque, which also took an extra 10 minutes. Nobody asked if we were satisfied, nobody asked if we enjoyed ourselves, nobody gave a rat's ass. I paid the cheque and will not return, except under duress. And all the "good" reviews reflect the idiocy of the people writing them. read more

Acacia is a well kept South Side secret. I've lived here since 2012 and tonight was the first time I worked up enough courage to open the door. This bar sits just around the corner from my apartment and has always just kind of been there. I've heard people talk about it (all good things) but never actually witnessed anyone coming or going. My husband, our neighbor and I sat at the bar near the door and were very impressed by the attentive and professional bartenders. He ordered a Guinness and since I had trouble deciding based on liquor, I went with my love of all things creamy and delicious and ordered a Rhus Juce. I've never been a consumer of gin, but this cocktail was a revelation. Light, creamy, refreshing and not the usually "I just ate a Christmas tree" after taste that I normally associate with gin. Their hand crafted cocktail menu changes, although I'm not sure how often. We dipped our drinks for quite some time - the speakeasy vibe, retro music and low lighting make for a very intimate setting - perfect for chatting and unwinding. We decided to stay for another drink, my neighbor (also a previous non gin drinker) ordered the Rhus Juce, my husband had another pint of the black stuff (they pour a good one) and I asked the bartender to surprise me. He didn't disappoint and mad a type of gin fizz that the Rhus Juce was based off of. Again, delicious. The attention to detail and personalized service is just what I'm all about in my seasoned career as a bar patron. This is a great place for before/after dinner drinks, a date, or an intimate group of friends. The cocktails aren't cheap (10-12$) but this isn't the type of bar you hit up to get smashed during happy hour. I will be back, Acacia....keep the gin cocktails coming! read more

I personally believe this to be the best bar in Pittsburgh. This place is so obscurely decorated that you're likely to miss if you're looking for it and 100% likely to miss it if you're not. If you see Ted's Excellent Bike Repair, look directly next to it. You'll see it. This is a speak-easy themed bar and it's incredible on the inside. The windows are boarded up and the door is covered in newspaper so that one cannot look inside or out. The drinks at this bar are on a whole other level. They are expertly crafted by the ridiculously knowledges bartenders who put long minutes into making the cocktails which range from $9-$12 dollars in my experience. While you will wait for your drinks, please realize that you aren't sitting around for a Shirley temple. These are cocktails that are made from ingredients that are located near the Seven Wonders of the World. It will come in time and it will be incredible. Sit back and enjoy the atmosphere. Also, bear in mind that if the cocktail menu isn't for you, they have one of the largest collections of Bourbon, whisk(e)y, and scotch in Pittsburgh. In addition to this, the staff can probably tell you every minute detail of what goes into making each and every bottle of whiskey behind the bar. It's truly admirable. I absolutely, completely, truly, madly, deeply, excessively love this place and I cannot believe it took me so long to get down here! Saturday was my birthday, and this place was perfect for celebrating. Truth be told, I'd already spent a lot of time at Acacia when it was Zythos. Its completely different inside now, and in a good way. The bartenders are hot. I sound like a dude. I love how they are dressed to go with the speak easy theme. I started out with the Left on Norwood drink, which came out in a little champagne flute. Next, they made Daisy RB, and then lastly I had the That Louis Guy. All three drinks were delicious. They're all made for sipping, and I love that they're all expertly crafted by the bartenders. Because of this the service is a little slow but its worth it. The drinks are about $10 - $12, and I think those are fair prices. Trust me, you're not going to need more than two. I was grateful for my designated driver after 3 cocktails. Next to Stagioni on Carson Street and behind the white-washed boards lies Acacia, a small bar that serves up the best prohibition-era cocktails in town (and quite possibly beyond). Thank goodness for us that the Volstead Act has long since been repealed, as we can enjoy all of Acacia's offerings without legal repercussion. And yet, I don't think it would matter if prohibition WAS still in effect, because Acacia is more hidden than Salman Rushdie! According to the owners, this is intentional. There are no hours posted, no large sign screaming "OPEN" to drunken Carson Street regulars. One sort of has to knock or test the door on this speakeasy to see if the place is open. But if it is? You're in for a treat! Every single cocktail has years of thought and care put into it. Hands down, the BEST aviation I have ever had in my life. If you're not familiar with negronis or bees knees, then you're still in good shape. The wise bartenders will craft a drink around whatever your favorite spirits are. Acacia also has a solid whiskey list that would make Nucky Thompson drool. Not in the mood for the hard stuff? Their draft offerings are plentiful as well (I counted about 15 various craft beers on tap, plus 8 Dogfish Head). Then there's the ambiance. The friendly bartenders dress in 20's garb, complete with vests and hats. The lighting is dim. 20's-era jazz plays on the speakers. I absolutely love it. The signature cocktails can be pricey ($10), but their beers and other drinks are reasonably priced. Just moved to the area so I gave this place a try. The arrogant "mixologist" wouldn't let me get the bourbon I ordered mixed with soda water because it was "too good of a bourbon to be mixed." The guy also kept interjecting into a conversation I was having with my friend sitting next to me at the bar. He then went on a weird rant about how Bulleit bourbon is homophobic. Ohhhh how I loved it here...I mean I was sold as soon as I saw the boarded up windows. I LOVE a good theme! I loved my drink, it was a bitter soda, and so, so good!! BF loved his 100 proof whiskey with the HUGE ice cube and my friend really loved her drink the cable car. I know they're doing construction on the upstairs and back room, I can't WAIT for it to be done, because the main room is amazing. I hope people don't deduct too many points for the back room. You wouldn't think so just by looking at the front door (looks like an abandoned apartment building), but when you get inside there's a bar with some booth seating on the left and a room in the back with some seats and some arcade games. Loved this speakeasy bar. The bartenders are great, and the drinks are delicious. I came here because my friend had recommended it to me, we ended up coming during Halloweek. We started with some chocolate milk cocktails, which are not on the menu and unfortunately they had to make with a whiskey base because they had ran out of Inferno. They were delicious, but too strong for my fruity, girly drink taste. We then asked the waitress for some cocktail shots. She asked us whether we wanted something with whiskey, we said we preferred something else, and she started making something amazing. I saw her prepare the drinks, and she probably put at least 7 different ingredients into our drink. The result was a "cocktail shot" that came in a classy, cute tiny glass and that was delicious.
