It is a bit tiny on the inside but they do have lots of seating. They have a coffee shop right on the other side of the restaurant and the iced lattes are delicious. Now about the food, so tasty! I was in Pittsburgh for a few days to watch the Kings/Pens hockey game. This was a poppin breakfast spot. There was a wait for a table, but we got right in at the counter. I had the I Am...Kaazam! I added avocado and it would outstanding. I should have added one more slice of toast to balance it out. My hockey pal/drinking buddy had the Lox'd & Loaded. He said it was the best lox he's had. They said they make it in house. If you like hot sauce, ask for their pineapple version. It is almost clear, like it was distilled. It was a fabulous addition. For drinks, we had water. Went to Speckled Egg without reservation on a Sunday morning! I saw that they switched reservation systems and are now on Tock!?? I saw Tock was showing open tables and so I thought I'd hit Speckled Egg and REI next door, and sure enough, they seated me immediately as their counter spaces were mostly empty. This South Side Works location has a clean, crisp, bright ambiance vs the other location that has a very different feel because of its old fancy building vibes. The counter seats I am afraid are a real pain in the butt... some of the most uncomfortable ones I've found anywhere and they're too high for people who aren't tall. I'd suggest regular tables... Saw no wifi of their own. I had the Hen's Hash, which was great and came with a generous helping of well cooked delicious potatoes. I've previously had their version of the shakshuka (I am Kazaam), which is also nice. I appreciate it when restaurants have decent hot sauces. They had tabasco, which is a pretty low bar but they had this in-house fancy drizzle, which was great... but it wasn't hot at all. Friendly attentive server at the bar there. No issues! read more

We were in Pittsburgh for a few hours and asked around for brunch recommendations. The Speckled Egg came up multiple times and it did not disappoint! It was easy to park and we were seated promptly. The restaurant is spacious and decorated with egg-themed pieces. You could tell from how the kitchen operated that they cared a lot about quality and freshness. We got a breakfast sando, aloha pudding, and a breakfast plate with eggs, sausage, and toast. The pudding was incredible and made me question why I don't try to make chia seed pudding more often! Really delicious toppings of chopped nuts, fresh fruit, toasted oats. The sausage was the best sausage I've ever had for brunch. Good breakfast the other morning - popped in during the handmade market. We easily got seats at the pretty bar. The service there was great - very attentive. My husband got the Rachel Ray - not sure why the name, but it's basically a Reuben w/ Turkey. He got it on marble rye. He wasn't super impressed, but it was tasty. I got the breakfast sando--- the 2 "broke yolks" weren't broke, but I like em runny. I added avocado. That was a nice addition, otherwise the sammie's a little low on flavor. This is such a cute brunch spot with lots of items on the menu, so if you like a variety then this is the place to go!! They also have a bar area with lots of alcoholic bevs as well. Their lox and loaded bagel was one of the best lox bagels I've had! It's def ez to make at home but I wanted to treat myself with a fancier version of it and this spot rlly hit it well. I ordered the Patty's Melt, and let me tell you: this sandwich slaps. I visited this place while in town because of the reviews I had seen, and wow! While the wait was about 1 hour, it was well worth it. So much so we went back a second day. I had the chorizo omelette and it was perfect. I also tried a side of my husband's pancakes, and those were the best pancakes I've had in my life! No lie! I highly recommend trying this quaint restaurant out. It's located inside of a historic building with accents of gold. Ask the waiter/waitress about the building's history. It's a whole thing! Reviewed December 6, 2025 (visited this morning) I've been to The Speckled Egg multiple times over the past year and have always left impressed. I regularly recommend it to my 10k+ followers on my Pittsburgh food account because the smashed-potato benedict and lemon-ricotta pancakes are legitimately some of the best brunch dishes in the city. Today, however, the experience at the host stand was frustrating enough that I have to speak up. We arrived at 11:10 for our 11:15 reservation--five minutes early. We checked in and were immediately told, "We're still waiting on some 11:00 parties," and asked to step aside. Over the next ten minutes I watched: * Several parties who arrived after us (clearly late for their 11:00 reservations) get walked straight to tables. * Another couple with the exact same 11:15 reservation time walk in at 11:16 and get seated instantly while we continued standing there. We were finally seated at 11:20. No apology, no explanation--just a ten-minute wait while later arrivals were prioritized. Here's the thing: almost every popular brunch spot in Pittsburgh now requires a credit card on file and charges $25-$100 per person for late arrivals or no-shows. The Speckled Egg does not, which is totally their prerogative, but if you're going to run without that policy, the very least you can do is treat everyone fairly and seat people in the order they check in (especially when someone shows up early and others are late). A quick "Hey, we're running a few minutes behind, thanks for being early--we'll get you in as soon as we can" would have completely diffused the situation. Instead it felt dismissive and inconsistent. I hope management considers either implementing a credit-card-hold policy (like the rest of the city) or at the very least training the host team on basic fairness and communication. The Speckled Egg is too good to let ten awkward minutes at the door overshadow an otherwise excellent hospitality. read more

The Speckled Egg is hands down the best gluten-free-friendly breakfast spot in Pittsburgh! I had such a great experience here and felt completely safe dining as someone with celiac. My server immediately flagged my meal as celiac, which gave me so much confidence in their process. They offer wild rise bakery toast and safe potatoes--something that's surprisingly hard to find, so I was thrilled! It's not easy to find truly celiac-safe breakfast places, but The Speckled Egg delivers on both safety and flavor. I can't wait to come back! I love this location of TSE! If you have to wait for a table, you can grab a coffee at Commonplace Coffee and wait. Definitely would recommend making a reservation on the weekends but during the week, you're probably safe. I recently enjoyed the buttermilk pancakes, fried chicken biscuit, and Lox'd & Loaded. The pancakes are always delish but this was the first time I has the chicken biscuit and toast. Omg that biscuit is to die for! This place is without a doubt a Pittsburgh brunch staple. I had previously only been to the one downtown, but I may actually prefer the Southside location! They have commonplace coffee which is also fantastic. I was disappointed when my latte came out in a togo cup instead of a mug but I'll live. The server was so sweet and was very attentive. It was fairly full and we had to 15 minutes but without a reservation. The pimento cheese on the chicken biscuit was unexpectedly delicious and the honey makes it sticky goodness. All I can say is YUM!! I absolutely love the Speckled Egg downtown and was excited to give the new(ish) Southside location a try. The bartender Zach, who was sadly working his last shift, was so wonderful. The Lox'd & Loaded was phenomenal, and they make the Lox in house! My mom had the Millennial (avocado toast) with Lox and said it was amazing as well. We also enjoyed a side of potatoes that were just delicious. There are plenty of drink options available from classic mimosas and bloody Mary's to craft cocktails and beers to juices from Pittsburgh Juice Company. Our quoted wait time of 45 minutes ended up being closer to 20, but it gave us time to enjoy a coffee and pastry right next door at Commonplace Coffee. read more

I stopped here on a Saturday morning around 9:30. We had reservations, but there were plenty of open tables, so it turned out not to be needed in our case. There was an elevated counter seating area that overlooked the restaurant and had a view of the kitchen, which is something that I always appreciate at restaurants. We requested to sit at the counter and move from where they originally seated us, which was happily accommodated. We ordered the hen's hash, sweater weather (toast with ricotta and apples), and the pumpkin pancakes to share. The hen's hash was delicious with the poached eggs and biscuit. The Brussels sprouts paired surprisingly well with the meal and made me feel a little healthier after chowing through the pumpkin pancakes! They did a very nice job on the decor inside. Large glass windows allow tons of natural light into the space. So much light, that depending on where you are seated and when you go, it may actually be a bit of a nuisance with sun in your eyes or on your back. Our server was friendly and attentive, making us feel welcomed and valued. The food was brought out quickly, about 10 minutes after ordering, and was fresh. I am happy to have finally tried this place after hearing good things about their other location. This one is more convenient for where we live, so I may be back again soon! We had the best brunch at The Speckled Egg. First, the drinks are amazing. From the fresh orange juice to the espresso martinis, there were no complaints. There were no complaints when it came to the food, either! Our table had the French toast, the millennial (an elevated avocado toast), lox'd and loaded, and eggs Benedict. My husband and our friends really enjoyed it. I had been wanting to try it and am so glad we did. The waiter was very nice and super attentive. The only reason this is not a 5 star is because i'm modest with handing those out. Apparently this location has only been open a few weeks? They're killing it. The vibes are on point and our server, I can't remember her name, was super lovely personable and a complete joy to talk to. Ambiance wise it was a little noisy and we were still a little tight at our table even after moving it forward a bit, but those are nitpicks. This location is right next to the REI in southside, there's parking lots nearby, and this needs to be on your brunch list for Pittsburgh. They also have a downtown location, but according to the friends we came to this one with, this location is infinitely better as it's not dealing with the confines of being in a hotel lobby. Anyway, you're here for the food comments. Our party of 4 got 2 orders of the quiche of the day, a couple lattes, an iced coffee, the breakfast sando (with added bacon, for obvious reasons) with side home fries and the "I am Kazaam" (with added crab). As a quick side note on the last one: getting the bonus crab is definitely worth the mark-up because you get so many chunks of it. That friend loved his and devoured it. The quiche drew rave reviews. The soup was nice. My sando was lovely as were the home fries. My only nitpick is that it was a bit hard to hold with my hands and when I cut it, most of the egg slid over to one side, but that's probably both user error. It was a great sandwich.
