I also enjoyed that this structure provided opportunities to practice a little Spanish a few days a week and then have an immersive discussion one-on-one with Dominque. In early October I decided to go to Merida Mexico and we created a second course structure that focused on the types of interactions I could experience on my trip. It was incredibly helpful in that I was able to "situationalize" my Spanish when interacting with the locals. This allowed be to navigate restaurant experiences, asking for directions throughout the city, plan a trip to another city, and fully engaging in a story-telling show completely in Spanish. For me learning Spanish is about connecting with the culture and community and while I still have a long way to go, i felt my time with Dominique served me well in having a great experience. One particularly fun interaction was when I purchased a painting in Merida and met the artist who spoke no English. As we spoke - he stopped and asked me where I was from and I said the US. He commented - no before that; your Spanish doesn't sound like an American. It felt great and I credit that with my sessions with Dominique.

We had originally requested Academic Answers to help us construct a care team to mimic an inpatient…read moretreatment facility (our daughter's outpatient clinic recommended inpatient, but we didn't want to send her to one). Academic Answers LIED to us and told us that all three of the people they had spoken to on our daughter's current care team (psychologist, psychiatrist, bio-feedback practitioner) all agreed that she needed to be placed in a facility outside the home to improve her condition. When we called each care team member to verify this, they ALL emphasized that this was completely untrue, and they in fact thought the opposite: that sending her away would be more traumatizing given the nature of her condition. The team from Academic Answers recommended we send our daughter to a facility in Utah whom, upon research, had a nefarious and scandalous history involving abuse by the staff to the kids. Academic Answers advised that had been "decades ago and none of the staff was still there", however in our interview with the facility they had incidentally told us they had changed names several years ago but the staff was still the same.... When confronted with these facts and that the scandal was actually three years ago, the response from Academic Answers was "well that's almost a decade". In an initial interview with Academic Answers, we had asked about a certain facility (where Academic Answers had placed the child of the parent who referred us to their company) and they told us that place was horrendous, and they would NEVER recommend a child to be placed there. When asked for a refund, Academic Answers offered to return $5,000 of the $7,000 we had given them if we signed an NDA stating we wouldn't discuss our experience. If reading this saves even one family from these vultures, preying on families in a compromised situation who are desperate to help their children, it was worth it to decline that option.

At the height of Delta infections, I was seeking a new school for my toddlers. All the schools I knew of in my area did not have openings. It was the first time since my kids were born I relied solely on a brief tour, and the listed childcare license at the TX department of human services website to enroll my kids at GAP-PLC. Therefore, I'm writing a review for any other parents looking to enroll their kids at this school given there are no online reviews available. I will start with what we appreciated about this school. My spouse and I are avid community members and both work in the social services field. So when we read the mission of GAP-PLC we were excited about what they were building and providing for the Austin community. The tuition for GAP-PLC is also incredibly affordable and they also provide 3 meals a day which was very convenient for busy parents. Her website says the children need to be 3 and above to attend. Our children were under 3 and the owner was flexible in allowing our twins to still enroll. When our children were scared after reading the Three Little Bears, she bought them stuffed animal bears to help them navigate their fears. Lastly, the school's policy requires all children to wear collared shirts, she gave us two as a donation since we didn't have any on hand. Unfortunately, many aspects of the school did not work for our family. Once we started, we received written notice about something that was wrong almost every week. The notices were always very formal and were not prompted by any informal discussion. This type of communication felt very rigid, cold, and transactional in nature. Not the type of communication we are used to or expected from a school that is working to build strong relationships with parents. Second, these 'written notices' were about what our children were not doing right by the school's standards. In these notices, we were told that our children were not acting in a way that was developmentally appropriate for GAP-PLC (not going to the bathroom as self-sufficient students and not communicating during circle time). Our children were 2.5 years old. Instead of recognizing where our children were at developmentally (which was incredibly normal for their age), GAP-PLC informed us that if our kids did not comply they would be kicked out of the school. I can't force my kids to wipe themselves when they physically don't have the dexterity to do so and I can't force them to talk in a space where they don't want to. The final straw was when she sent us a written notice inappropriately labeling our children as selectively mute and was going to separate our twins from each other and put them on a behavior plan. Fortunately, we are actually mental health professionals who knew our children were not mute in any way (but other parents may have accepted this unqualified and misdiagnosis as truth) and were incredibly frustrated with how inappropriate this entire exchange was. It is in my years of experience in social policy that education performance being driven by test scores is what actually furthers inequities in our education system, which would be the antithesis of GAP-PLC's mission. When we expressed our genuine concern over the phone with the owner of the school, she emailed us the next morning saying our children had to leave the school. Fortunately, she did say we could finish out the month while we found a new place. I was so angry I wanted to just pull them out, but our daughters did enjoy the school and we really had no other options at the time. We lasted six weeks and the entire experience left us hurt and stressed. Luckily, we found a school right in our neighborhood that our children were able to enroll into quickly. Within days, the owners noted how brilliant our children were and how much they talked at school. It's just a reminder that your kids will thrive in a place that is developmentally appropriate and safe for them.

Veritas Prep was a great tool to use to study for the GMAT. I took the full, 7 week course, 2x/week…read morefor 3 hours each session. I took the course in May, and took the GMAT in June scoring a 580. My quant score improved dramatically from my first practice test (37% first test? 50% actual GMAT percentile). My instructor, Kristine Dugan, was excellent at communicating the concepts to us, and the class size actually was only me and one other student. This private setting allowed us one-on-one attention with the instructor. Kristine was incredibly helpful and encouraging, and extremely intelligent. She kept the lessons light-hearted and we even got in some laughs (yes, during GMAT studying!). I would highly recommend her and the Veritas book set was great. I got a perfect score of 6 out of 6 on my essay, solely by following the Veritas formula for writing essays. If I decide to re-take my GMAT (when I'm not working full-time and taking finals) I have the books, online tests, and free help ready for me if i'm ready to take it on again. Excellent program!
