I normally order from this place on DoorDash but today I grabbed my order to go. The staff were great , sweet and accommodating. While I'm not a frequent goer to this establishment the food there is by far some of the best papusas in the area. Their steak in tortilla salad is also very good. Out of all the restaurants in this area (most fast food) it makes you feel the least guilty while being tasty. Reasonably priced and the portions are pretty good. She never came by to check on us during our stay until the end, and it was another server not even our original one. Not sure if she was having a bad day, but I will not be coming back ever. Steak was thoroughly done and well-seasoned. Based on reviews, we had reasonable expectations, so it was nice to have an above average experience. Place was clean. Booths were comfy. My husband and I stopped by on a whim for lunch. It's a cute space with plenty of seating. Service was kind and timely. Parking is ample in the strip center. The chips were nice and warm, and the salsa tasted fresh. I ordered the vegetarian burrito, and it was filled with steamed broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. ...not exactly the grilled veggies that were included in the dish description. That would have been 3 starts, but I'm going with four because the rice and beans are vegetarian. That's much appreciated! Moved away from the area over 8 years ago and before we left this was one of our go to places. Always good service, great food and reasonably priced. Well 8 years later we are back in the area and we decided to get some takeout and I have to say things are as they ever were. The food is delicious, the portions are well sized and the pricing is fair. Nothing is "cheap" anymore, but you get a lot of bang for your buck when eating here. The customer service was excellent, Denisse was our server, she was lovely and so friendly and very helpful. We appreciated the positive and welcoming attitude. Delicious food, very fresh ingredients. Our table especially loved the excellent salmon, fajitas, pupusas, guac, house-made tortillas, and the amazing chocolate cheesecake. We had plenty of leftovers of everything except the cheesecake, so we bought more cheesecake to take home. The staff and new owner were extraordinarily kind, helpful, patient, and attentive to our table with a lot of special needs. Truly gracious. I would give them 10 stars. "STOP DON'T DINE HERE THEY ALLOW PERVERTS" My wife and our 9-year-old daughter, and I visited this restaurant for the first time today. Unfortunately, from the moment we walked in, the experience began to unravel. The cashier (whom I'll refer to as Waitress #1) greeted us without a smile and seemed visibly upset already. Still, I chose to give the benefit of the doubt. We placed a takeout order, but after waiting 30 minutes with no updates, I began to feel more concerned. During that time, I asked Waitress #2 for a cup of water for my daughter. She said she would bring it over, but 10 minutes passed without any follow-up. When I asked Waitress #1 instead, Waitress #2 quickly apologized, saying she had forgotten. The situation escalated to a very troubling and unacceptable incident. A clearly intoxicated man approached my wife and me, made disturbing comments about watching our daughter from afar, and said he wanted to "talk to her for an hour." His words were deeply inappropriate and perverse. I immediately confronted him and reported the incident to Waitress #1, while Waitress #2 and Waitress #3 were present and listening. To my disbelief, none of the them addressed the intoxicated man or asked him to leave. They didn't offer an apology, acknowledge the seriousness of what happened, or assure us that the safety of their guests especially children is a priority. It was clear no warning, rebuke, or action was taken against him. My wife later told me that this man was even gesturing to our daughter, trying to call her over. After waiting over 35 minutes, we finally received our food an excessive delay considering the restaurant wasn't particularly busy. When we got home, we realized one of our orders was missing. Frustrated, I called the restaurant, and Waitress #3 (Jocelyn) told me she hadn't realized there was a second order under the same name another indication of poor internal communication. They gave me the number for the owner, Jose Rios. I called him and explained everything: the long wait, the missing item, the disturbing encounter with the drunk man, and the complete lack of intervention from his staff regarding the drunken pervert. His response was a simple, "I'm sorry," with no sincere empathy or indication that he would take action. He didn't ask how he could make things right or show any real concern for the safety and experience of a first-time customer. When I told him I planned to leave a review, he seemed indifferent, almost dismissive and had a tone as if he didn't care. What upsets me most isn't just the missing food or the wait it's that this restaurant allowed a clearly intoxicated and inappropriate individual to remain on the premises after we raised a serious concern. There were children in the restaurant, not just ours. The staff failed to take basic steps to ensure a safe environment. And the owner's response showed no leadership or responsibility. This place is not safe for families. It's unacceptable for any business especially one that serves the public to tolerate this type of behavior on their premises without consequence. Safety and accountability must come before profits or food orders. "EVERYONE" especially those with children don't come here, this place is not a safe place to bring your kids around because they had tolerated a drunken perverted man to be inside this establishment even after we complaint against him. Here's the bottom line:This restaurant allowed a drunken, inappropriate man to remain on the premises after he approached a child and made disgusting comments with zero action taken by the staff or management. That is not just bad service. That is "DANGEROUS" To parents: Do not bring your children here. This is not a safe environment, and based on our experience, this business has no proper standards, no accountability, and no moral backbone. We have been coming here for years and have never been disappointed. They have El Salvadoran and TexMex food. Meals come with chips and salsa. Their pupusas are pretty good. This trip we got the shrimp chimichanga, pollo guanaco (so juicy), extra flour tortillas (nice and warm), extra frijoles, 2 sodas and 2 pupusas. Their prices haven't gone up too much, so every thing was pretty reasonable and we had a lot of left overs. The inside is really cute and the service is pretty good. There were only 2 waitresses and the place was pretty full, but they were able to get to all the tables and didn't have any issues. They do have high chairs and I didn't check to see if they have changing tables. read more

Wonderful experience right from the start! Our waitress was sweet and attentive the whole time. The wife ordered their Steak "El Pipil" It was a NY Strip seasoned to perfection, grilled to order. Part of the reason this restaurant scores low to me is due to the way the operation is being run. Note sure if they were short staff in the kitchen and the dining area. The waitress was super nice to us and that deserves some type of consideration but when we(2 colleagues and myself) arrived to this place it was lunch time and there was only two other tables with guests. It took about 15-20minutes before we were even acknowledged. Excessively full after so many tortilla chips being refilled...After over an hour having ordered the food. I started noticing others around us getting up and leaving because of how long their food was taking(raised a flag). One table had arrived before us and another after us. I was being patient but then it was way past time to get back to work and could not longer keep waiting. Until I got up and asked to be charged for what we have drank or eaten because we had to leave. I was told food was almost out. 15 minutes later the food came to our table. As am turning the corner, he's standing behind the bar without no mask. I asked our waitress who he is. She tells me that he is the owner of the restaurant. I asked her why is he not wearing a mask...all she can say is that he is the owner. She couldn't say anything. Well went ahead and canceled my to go order. Review We have been visiting Alcajulta for over 30 years and have been blessed over the years with great food, great service and many great memories with our family. It saddens me to see the how crown jewel of Central American cuisine in Gaithersburg has fallen. It feels as though our beloved little bistro has had some form of seismic change in management - for the worse. The first thing we noticed was the smell. The vestibular entrance smelled like a dead rodent was rotting in the plenum area above their drop ceiling, which itself now looks decrepit. This should have been our queue to turn and run the other way. But, as loyal customers of this establishment we overlooked this first "offense". We lived to regret that decision. The young man who was our server was not well trained in basic hospitality. He didn't really greet us, didn't bring us water, and the first thing he said to us was "what do you want to drink" , as if he wanted us to get on with the money-making portion of his visit. I asked for the 32 oz Salvadoran "Regia Extra" which has been available on the menu for as long as the place has been open. It has never ever NOT been available in Acajulta. It is unforgivable that a Salvadoran restaurant is out of its only Salvadoran beer on the menu. It is their most expensive beer offering and is quite popular among Central Americans and gringos like me. After that, the waiter was about to walk away, even though we we ready to put in our food order. He looked really confused as to why we would also want to order food as if it wasn't in the script. Really, this was so awkward and bizarre. But we were able to get our food order in despite his protestations. He left Salsa and chips, but no water. Our drinks came a full 10 minutes after we ordered. After we got our drinks we waited on our food another 30 minutes. The guy came back and said, "would you like more salsa and chips" but did not offer any apology for the delay in food or an explanation for why it was not ready. (Hint: if you are a server and the food is not ready after 30 mins of waiting, you apologize profusely and offer everyone a shot of Patron or free dessert to mollify them for your shitty service. You don't just show up acting like everything is fine and then offer another plate of chips. Take ownership!) Finally, at the 35 minute mark after the drinks were served the food arrived. The Chicken fajitas arrived sizzling, but the beef fajitas were lukewarm and definitely not sizzling. What is the point of ordering fajitas on a hot cast iron plate if they are not sizzling when they arrive? The whole fajitas experience is about the senses - sound and smell that turns heads when it arrives. For fajitas to be served any other way is nothing short of sacrilege. The final insult was at the end ...or the "end without end"as it were. It was getting late so we decided to box our food. We asked the guy for clamshell boxes and a few extra flour tortillas and he went directly to his ordering notepad as if he was going to charge us for two stinking flour tortillas! As if all the rest of his bungling wasn't enough, he now had the audacity to Nickel and Dime us for tablespoonful of flour and water. He returned 12 minutes later with the clamshell boxes and then asked if we wanted our bill. Well that was an enthusiastic "yes". He comes back again another 15 minutes later and asks the same question. At this point we started to feel sorry for the guy, as he was hopelessly out of his depth in this job and looked like a deer in the headlights. He finally came back with the bill and it took another 12 minutes for him to process our credit card. I worry for places like Acajulta, one of a handful of now declining erstwhile bastions of authentic cuisine in Gaithersburg. The pandemic hurt so many of these businesses, causing many of their best employees to jump ship in the great resignation. In this economic climate, this place will go out of business soon if these basic issues are not meaningfully addressed. Had a late lunch at Acajutla yesterday with a group of 12 people. The restaurant has been refurbished, new wall art and new furniture, very attractive. Seating had been arranged just as requested, service was fast, very attentive and efficient. Salsa and baskets of warm chips were delivered to the tables while we checked our menus and ordered our drinks. Food was just as ordered, very tasty and reasonably priced; everyone enjoyed it. At the end of the meal we were offered extra treats which helped make the entire experience more enjoyable. Throughout the meal, our waitress provided friendly, fast and efficient service while Mr. Rios, the owner, and Mr. Calderon, the manager, were there making sure that everything was working smoothly. A very enjoyable outing, this restaurant has been in the area for years and deserves continued support. I will continue to be a regular customer. read more

I've been here only once. We were greeted promptly. Decor was pretty authentic, hand painted advertisements on the speckled walls. It was cold, wished they'd have turned on the heat. Food wasn't super quick but it wasn't slow either. There was only one other table seated though. Onto the food, the chips and salsa were okay. The salsa was good but the chips were overdone. My chicken plate (Pollo Guanaco) was decent, nothing special. The tortillas are handmade and are charged separately, $0.50 each. My husband had tacos and cleaned his plate. Prices aren't too high but aren't cheap either. Prices are very close to Guapos. I am willing to give this place another try. Just for the record, this restaurant isn't that bad. This rating is for the restaurant's owner. We visit this place at least 3 times per month and before 5 pm the staff are great (and so is the food) But in the evening the owner usually shows up and every single time we have been there, we have seen her having issues with a table or two and this last time it was our turn... We ordered what we usually get and specifically asked for no sour cream. When the food arrived it had extra sour cream (on all 3 plates) the server saw our face and automatically took the plates back to the kitchen. We never saw the waitress again after that. After we finished our food, the manager brought the bill with a 20% gratuity added for her relative (the new waitress) so we asked her why that was and she said that they always do that on orders over $100 (this isn't true) so we told her that we didn't feel it was fair for us to pay a $25 tip after having to eat food with sour cream leftover that we didn't ask for. And unbelievably he response was that it wasn't the server's fault that the cooked messed up the order (as if the server isn't the person who is supposed to check the order before taking it to the table) So, we unfortunately will never be going back to this place after 5 pm if we ever actually come back because this was simply ridiculous. You can tell they are not trying to impress you with decor/set up. Things are pretty dated but I appreciate the effort they make to keep it clean. More importantly, I appreciate the food and friendly staff who is friendly enough but gives you space. Was not a fan of the cheap taco bowl shell they serve the guacamole on.. was that a pastry shell? Bar needs work, unless you get a beer. I would want to return and give it another shot since I do see a lot of potential with the menu/taste. read more

I haven't had a bad experience yet. I like how it is almost always quiet, and your food usually is out in about 10 minutes. If I got a bad plate of food at Acajutla, I would blame the farmer before the chef. May favorites include the chicken enchiladas, plantains, chimichangas, and the beans. read more

I go to this place at least twice a month to get my pupusa fix. Small, family run business that serves Mexican/El Salvadorian dishes. Nice size portions for cheap. I haven't had anything there yet that I didn't like. The decor isn't all that great but the service makes up for it. Must try: Yuca con chicharron, pupusas, and their enchilades. Oh, and they also serve breakfast! read more
