Tacos de Carne

Place has a very chill environment. The cook is very sweet and polite. She made the food in prompt timing. She also served our food. My son and I went on a Thursday noon, it wasn't busy at all. Very quiet if you'd like to sit and eat in peace. Food was good, menu layout could improve perhaps add pictures to it to make it easier for people who aren't familiar with Latin food. A little more lighting and a little background music could be convenient too:)

Every Wednesday night I have a client that I meet with at the library that shares a parking lot with Tomatillo. Not wanting to drive all over Rockville or Wheaton this past Wednesday I walked into Tomatillo. Let's talk about that experience, shall we? The Tomatillo is at the end of a old, beaten, seemingly uncared for strip mall. Walking into Tomatillo, the theme of a less than pleasing environment continues. Although not dirty, really, it just doesn't project "Hey, I'm clean and well kept, eat here". The server was very friendly and helpful. She was the lone bright spot during my Tomatillo experience. I order salsa and chips, a bean and rice pupusas and Pechuga a la creme. The salsa was redish water with tomato and onion chucks. Was it good? No. The pupusas was over cooked with burned areas on both sides. It was tough to chew and lacked flavor. Was it good? No. The Pechuga was interesting looking, chicken in a sea of very runny yellow gravy. The chicken was rubbery, hard to cut, hard to chew. The yellow gravy tasted like yellow would if yellow had a flavor. Was it good? No As I only had the three items mentioned above I can't speak to the specifics of the entire menu. However, since runny, flavorless sauces and gravy and over cooked, hard to chew food seems to be a cooking style here, I can not see anything on the menu having great value or flavor. Environment is a 1. Food was a 1. Service was a solid 3. I am giving the place a 2 star rating because I can't give it a 1.5 and 1 seems mean when it's clear that they at least try not to be awful, they just sort of fail.

I was having a terrible day and said what the hell it's taco Tuesday i might as well find a place to go. My friend and i decided to come here. Only thing that sucked is that we literally just missed happy hour-go figure. We started off with a tamal de elote and it was really good. We had tacos and pupusas. I got tacos with rice and beans i could have done without. I literally paid for them and didn't eat them. But either way the tacos were bomb! And they have good music and we were jamming out. I cant believe i didn't know this places existed! I found my new taco Tuesday spot!

"Carne asada" burrito

HORRIBLE!! My wife and I are from Southern California where Mexican food is on point and the Mexican border is only about 20 minutes away. So when I say this is the worst Mexican food I've had in my life. I mean it. When I order a "Carne asada" burrito i expect grilled beef -which is the literal definition of carne asada- Not boiled, shredded beef. I'm honestly surprised I saw any beef in the burrito at all. A Victoria's Secret model has more meat on her than that burrito did. If I wanted a boiled beef burrito I could probably match what they made with just a microwave. If you're just hungry and don't care how something tastes then this is the perfect spot for you.

Love this place, the casadias are epic and a billion times better then taco bell. Go here for real meat instead of the sawdust that franchise sells. 4 stars and up are right on the money with their reviews.

As you can see Perrier says $1.75 and receipt says $2.65

Bland. Watered down salsa. Bad guac. Don't order the veggie burrito. The tacos were not bad.

The chips were crisp and not oily; the salsa wasn't spicy, but looked fresh with chunks of tomato and onion. Very good fresh salsa. I got the vegetable fajitas ($24.99) and my partner got the Pollo Apanado ($23.99). The fajitas arrived on a sizzling platter. (The pictures I took below are a bit obscured from the steam from my platter!). It was a nice portion, with onion, peppers, tomatoes, zucchini and broccoli. The veggies were well prepared - cooked but not mushy. I asked for corn tortillas and no sour cream. Everything arrived as I requested. The Pollo was a special last night - thin chicken breast in a brown mushroom sauce over mashed potatoes with a little cheese and asparagus. Very good. The place was pretty busy on a Saturday evening around 6:30 pm, but we were not rushed at all. Unfortunately, one of the specials they offered last night (cream of crab soup) was not available. Seems a bit early in the evening to run out of a specials item, but I guess it was very popular and good!) The service was very good. Water service especially. Our glasses were never empty before someone came by to refill. The price for the veggie fajitas seems higher than the same dish at other local restaurants. I can't say I noticed a difference in quality or taste from the others.

The staff was friendly and gave some suggestions, but the service is mostly you doing things. The food was good, nothing amazing but pretty good! Good portions of meat and interesting flavors that work together. The steak was tender enough and the chicken was good. The only thing I would suggest would be a heated up tortilla and meltier cheese on top. Overall most of them were pretty decent! 3.5/5 Chips and sampler was good! I do like the chips tasted freshly made and the guacamole and salsa were great! The queso was decent not my favorite, but it was a good addition to the trio. 4/5 Overall, this place is better than Taco Bamba and what I would compare it to with thier similar fusion flavors. I'd go back and try some more things!

Oh and if you cant see the meat under all the toppings, assured its there and was excellent. I would say two tacos was enough, could've pushed for a third but honestly if I was going for a third I would get a burrito to go along with the two tacos to really push me over the limit. Excellent service and fast. The decor and seating could be a bit better but this is definitely a fast casual atmosphere. Prices are spot on for what you're getting and wont be disappointed.

Not fancy, but nice and comfortable tables with huge umbrellas to block the sun. The food here is good. In the past, we got the Platter for 2 ($27), which is a nice sized platter of wood fire grilled steak, chicken, sausage and shrimp with rice/beans/salad and tortillas. We couldn't finish it all and it was all delicious. No complimentary chips and salsa for the table, so tonight we ordered chips and guac to start. The guac was good with chunks of tomato, onion and avocado; it would have been nice to also get some salsa with it when you order the guac, but there's a separate charge for chips/salsa. For entrees, we got a Carne En Vara and Carne Asada. The En Vara is a skewer of chicken, beef, onion and green peppers, with rice/beans and a side order of arepitas (corn fritter). Everything was well prepared. I liked the arepitas. The Asada was a decent piece of beef that was well prepared. Came with rice and beans and flour tortillas. The service was very good. We were seated and received ice water promptly. The guac came out quickly as did the entrees, but not rushed. The server came by a couple of times to see how we were doing snd she refilled our waters. This is a "Latin" restaurant, and maybe I'm used to the ubiquitous Mexican restaurants that place salsa on the table, and I will say I missed it and didn't want to have to spend $3.95 for salsa. There were a couple of times when I would have liked to dip some of the meat into a sauce/salsa. They do put a bottle of Habanero hot sauce on the table when you sit down. The entrees tonight were good, but if you want to try the fire grilled meats, for value I recommend the Platter for 2.
