I simply do not understand the low rating, 3.3 at time of this post. This is legitimately one of the best Mexican restaurants I've been to in many years, and I go pretty frequently. The food is always great, cooked right in front of you. This isn't TexMex, it is real Mexican food. I was really disappointed with the tortillas here. They were extremely dry and stiff, and honestly didn't taste like they were made from fresh masa at all. The texture was crumbly and lacked the softness and flavor you'd expect from a good tortilla. It felt more like something reheated or store-bought rather than freshly made. We came here on a weekday evening craving some Mexican food. The place is good and the food was delicious. We had fajitas, burrito, and guac. The owners wife (not sure but it looked family owned) made us fresh tortillas - hot off the stove. We saw her rolling them out. Usually we don't like tortillas and stay away because they have that preservative smell but these were so good that we gobbled up a few each. Place has a very chill environment. The cook is very sweet and polite. She made the food in prompt timing. She also served our food. My son and I went on a Thursday noon, it wasn't busy at all. Very quiet if you'd like to sit and eat in peace. Food was good, menu layout could improve perhaps add pictures to it to make it easier for people who aren't familiar with Latin food. Every Wednesday night I have a client that I meet with at the library that shares a parking lot with Tomatillo. Not wanting to drive all over Rockville or Wheaton this past Wednesday I walked into Tomatillo. Let's talk about that experience, shall we? The Tomatillo is at the end of a old, beaten, seemingly uncared for strip mall. Walking into Tomatillo, the theme of a less than pleasing environment continues. Although not dirty, really, it just doesn't project "Hey, I'm clean and well kept, eat here". The server was very friendly and helpful. She was the lone bright spot during my Tomatillo experience. I order salsa and chips, a bean and rice pupusas and Pechuga a la creme. The salsa was redish water with tomato and onion chucks. Was it good? No. The pupusas was over cooked with burned areas on both sides. It was tough to chew and lacked flavor. Was it good? No. The Pechuga was interesting looking, chicken in a sea of very runny yellow gravy. The chicken was rubbery, hard to cut, hard to chew. The yellow gravy tasted like yellow would if yellow had a flavor. Was it good? No As I only had the three items mentioned above I can't speak to the specifics of the entire menu. However, since runny, flavorless sauces and gravy and over cooked, hard to chew food seems to be a cooking style here, I can not see anything on the menu having great value or flavor. Environment is a 1. Food was a 1. Service was a solid 3. I am giving the place a 2 star rating because I can't give it a 1.5 and 1 seems mean when it's clear that they at least try not to be awful, they just sort of fail. read more

I happened upon this place while buying time until I had to begin my parent-teacher conferences on a Monday night. I really didn't want to leave school at 3:45, go home, eat a quick meal only to turn around 1 1/2 hours later. I wanted something quick, but not McDonald's quick. Tomatillo Mexican Grill fit the bill. For a small, nondescript place their menu is expansive. There was nobody here at 5:30 pm except for the two workers speaking rapid Spanish to each other. Choices include about fifteen specialty items, chicken entrees, burritos and quesadillas. Other dining options include Salvadorian specialties such as four different kinds of pupusas for $2.20 each. Being the unadventurous diner named Libby F that I am, I opted for a cheese quesadilla ($6.15). It was the cheesiest quesadilla I have ever had! It had no other ingredients in it, but dressed up with the sides of guacamole, sour cream and pico de gallo, it was perfection. The pico de gallo (which I prefer over salsa) was fresh and flavorful. The combined flavors made for a tasty and filling meal. Highly recommend if you're in the area, but don't make a special trip. read more

I've come to Tomatillo Mexican twice; once for fajitas and once for a burrito and pupusas. If you're looking for a no frills and high quality food, this is it. For the fajitas, the peppers and onions were cooked well without being soggy; for the burrito the rice, beans, and salsa were super flavorful; the meats are moist and well seasoned across the board. HORRIBLE!! My wife and I are from Southern California where Mexican food is on point and the Mexican border is only about 20 minutes away. So when I say this is the worst Mexican food I've had in my life. I mean it. When I order a "Carne asada" burrito i expect grilled beef -which is the literal definition of carne asada- Not boiled, shredded beef. I'm honestly surprised I saw any beef in the burrito at all. A Victoria's Secret model has more meat on her than that burrito did. If I wanted a boiled beef burrito I could probably match what they made with just a microwave. When my steak burrito was set down in front of me rolled in foil to keep it hot my eyes watered with tears of sheer happiness. Sitting in the sand of Mission Beach after walking one block from my favorite Roberto's Taco Shop location. This burrito took me across the country back to where my heart sings! The location is easily missed, and that's why I'll always refer to it as my little gem when I'm feeling a little taco shop - home sick. When I first walked in I just knew this place was gonna take me for a ride. The jukebox was blairing some nice little salsa song and there were two hispanic woman eating big plates rice & beans with tacos lines to one side brimming with what looked like deliciousness I can't describe. Now, let me set you straight.. it is not a carne asada burrito from San Diego.... but it is for damn sure the closest I have found. They have a carne asada steak on the menu though, so I may request them to use that next time in my burrito to try to get even closer to home. The ambiance is nothing special.. However they have like I said a blairing jukebox and a pool table.... so on an afternoon when I don't know what else to do.. Definitely get the fruit salad juice with your meal if you visit Tomatillo, it is so refreshing and full of actual fresh fruit. When I came here yesterday I was still decompressing from work and feeling grumpy, but the fruit salad juice and a chicken quesadilla fixed me right up. You can also get a Corona or Modelo there if you are so inclined. It was a pleasant experience sitting at the bar next to their open kitchen, watching fresh tortillas being made and chatting with the super friendly ladies that work there. If you've actually had real Mexican food, you'll know that this is not it. I wanted a burrito. They put all the usual fixings: beans, rice, meat, etc. There was not much chicken. The food was cooked, but not too flavorful. If you need a quick fix, this will be alright but never a substitute for real Mexican food. Most of the "Mexican food" around the area has Central and South American influence, so if that floats your boat you might want to look at some of the other items on the menu. read more

We came in to get a meal and got menus very quickly. We asked for the lomo saltado, the chicken burrito, and a fruit salad drink. The wait time to get the meal was over 30-40 minutes for the food and also for the fruit salad drink. We had the lomo saltado come out first, 10 minutes later, the fruit salad drink, and lastly the chicken burrito about 5-10 minutes after that. The fruit salad drink was awesome! The lomo saltado was good, the rice was average, and the salad was also average. The chicken burrito was not chicken.... we got a steak burrito instead. We would've asked the waiter why we got the steak instead of chicken in the burrito but feared it would take another 30 minutes to get the meal out and didn't want to wait that long. The atmosphere felt awkward. There was ONE track playing in the restaurant, then it would stop for about 20 minutes and then another track would play. This was the only restaurant in Twinbrook Center that I hadn't patronized, so I stopped in a few nights ago and ordered the burrito bowl (??) and a Modelo Black beer. The burrito bowl turned out to have all the fixings of an amply-filled burrito but in a bowl, no tortilla. It was fairly decent, good without being outstanding. As someone else noted, the place is clean, open, and the food is prepared on an open grill. The staff was helpful. The only real knock on this place is that it calls itself Mexican instead of Salva. Central American places in DC try to sell themselves as Mexican I guess to attract more gringos. There is no need because their own cuisine is great. I have only tried their salvadoran food and can't vouch for their mexican fare (which I'm sure is pretty good also). Typical joint with mostly men drinking beer, munching on food, and listening to tunes. The women behind the counter know what theyre doing. Whether it's a breakfast meal, lunch, or dinner, you'll get some tasty food. GREAT FOOD but everything else sub-par. Though I am Korean, I consider myself an expert in Latin American cuisine after marrying my lovely Salvadoran wife years ago. Living in Rockville, I have tried all of the Latin American restaurants in the area and believe Tomatillo to have among the best food in the area and is someplace I get take-out from at times. The food is quite delicious, but there are several reasons I don't buy here regularly. no. 1 reason are the prices. Without question, the best Latin cuisine in the area comes from La Brasa just a couple miles away from here. However, for some reason Tomatillo is more expensive than La Brasa for many items and never cheaper. They also do things no other Latin restaurant does, like charge $3 for chips and salsa instead of just giving it to you. Tomatillo is also pretty bad as a sit-down restaurant. Simply by looking at the space, you can tell this place is pretty old. The plates look like they cost $2 from Walmart. It's also got loud Latin music blasting through the speakers all day, which is very off putting - like the owners can't decide if they want the place to be a restaurant or a bar In conclusion, this place is OK as a take-out place and the food is great, but it's disappointing to dine in. read more

This is the worst place ever, especially the waitress, she is not trained properly - Lydia- she should be fired. She embarrassed my husband and I. So one time, I accidently didn't pay her 20 cents. The next time I went there, she charged me the 20 cents, she was very rude, and worst of all she wanted a tip? So a few weeks later, we went back and she told me that I didn't leave her a tip, when she had already included the tip (because the bill was more than $50 she automatically charges herself the tip) so the next day she was rude and told me that I didn't leave her a tip of $7 which was embarrassing and told me that I had stolen the original receipt. I ordered 2 carne asadas and 5 papusas through the phone so I wouldn't have to wait. Everything came up to $40! When I got home there was only 4 papusas. The steak was good but a little salty. The papusas was very soggy. And my biggest complaint is if you're charging so much why is that we only got basically a scoop of rice and beans. I am of Mexican heritage, both my parents being from the Northern part of Mexico. Yet I have I was born here and have grown up in the states my whole life, outside of my house, I always found it rare to come by a place as authentic as the food served here. They can serve a mixture of food from El Salvador all the way to Mexico. The parking is never a problem because they are right at the end of the plaza and so it's just a couple of steps to the door even if you can't park right in the front. The only con i can think of is the fact that sometimes they have one track playing but the last time I went the have been playing all kinds of genres which was really nice to take in. The pros are the way the stuff their Tacos de Lengua to where it almost comes out of the tortilla that is already as big as the plate, which runs you about $8 for 3. To me, I think its a pretty good deal, plus you get to watch huge TV's. There is even on corner where the TV is literally right where a table is. The waitress get you a menu almost as soon as you walk in. Overall incredibly convenient place to park, get served and eat authentic food! read more

We went here to eat because we were stuck at the laundromat next door. First of all we ordered a veggie burrito which the girl read back to me on the order as veggie quesadilla and I corrected her veggie burrito, and guess what we got:a veggie quesadilla. not only that but we ordered the ceviche, big mistake, it was practically raw. My husband and I eat a lot of ceviche so we know when it is prepared correctly and when it is not. Thinking it was an oversight because ceviche is a tricky dish I took it back and nicely told them that the ceviche needed to sit in the lemon and lime juices longer because they were still raw. I thought I was doing them a favor cause if ceviche is done wrong, your stomach will not love you, and they could have major issues with the health department. Anyways, they got a complete attitude, I didn't understand what the cook said to my husband but she was pissed. They did refund the money for the ceviche but we didn't ask for the refund on the "burrito" cause it would have meant another trip back into the restaurant and dealing with a nasty attitude. I would never come back to this place, I don't mind if you mess up my food, just fix it without being rude. (or in the case of ceviche, there is no fixing it, just get your money back). Tomatillo is a little known restaurant tucked away in a strip mall in Twinbrook. My husband and I decided to stop in and see what was on the menu. I ordered the carne asada, and chips and salsa to go. The restaurant is very clean and with an open grill area you can see your food being prepared. The chips they made fresh to order as well as the carne asada. IT WAS FANTASTIC! The salsa was fresh and flavorful. I saw the waitress go by with a yummy looking drink that was full of fresh chopped fruit. I asked her what is was and she told me it was "fruit juice" . A moment later she came back with a cup of it for me to try (no charge) The taste was amazing, the juice sweet, and the huge amount of fresh chopped fruit was awesome. On the way out I saw a man eating a burrito that looked like the size of a childs thigh! They also serve beer which made my hubby happy. I would definately recommend this for authentic mexican. Their menu says taquitos & quesadilla $6.95-Two chicken taquitos and our classic quesadilla, served with fresh guacamole and sour cream. 5 staff members were going to order that. When I went to call it in the girl who answered could barely speak English. She said which do you want? I explained your menu says taquitos & quesadilla, the description says two chicken taquitos and our classic quesadilla. I decided to just go there and place the order. Only two women were working, lunch time, when I showed her the menu and explained you have the symbol "and" showing taquitos & quesadilla and the wording saying "and" that you need to honor the order. She said no. Very rude. Decided not to order. One of my co-workers called to talk to the manager and the girl told her there was no manager there.
