It often gets overlooked between the hustle and bustle of the congested, busy Oxon Hill Road traffic and slue of neighboring businesses. As an avid bookworm and lover of books, I've seen this library many times while on my commute riding home but today I was off and decided to stop by and venture in. Although not much to look at on the outside, I must say I was impressed with the interior of the library and its collection. Although the collection of books are small compared to other libraries around, they were still relevant and current. What makes this library special is that they have a huge collection of African-American history and literature..... actually, as I learned from the head librarian, it is one of the largest collections of African-American history books and literature in the Washington DC area. I spent some significant time and this section of the library and really enjoyed it. Lots of knowledge and artifacts for the avid readers and knowledge seekers. I also couldn't help but notice a community puzzle that was laid out on a table that was really cool! I even added a couple of the missing pieces myself and found it to be very cathartic--relaxing. In all, neighborhood libraries can be a bit of lost nostalgia, but I find these resources to be very important in today's digital world. It's great to step into a space and actually feel, read, engulf yourself into reading materials as oppose to glaring screens and tablets. I highly recommend stopping by this library and giving it your patronage. It is open to all, whether you are a DC or Maryland resident. The staff is truly knowledgeable and seemed very happy to help with my questions/requests. The facilities is fully Wi-Fi enabled and can service a great stop for quick teleworking. It's the historical reference for me about this library and the vast collection of African-American literature that makes this place a stand out. They will even go back to the old collections and pull something out for you. They even have a wide variety of events, programs, including educational programs and lectures. And if they don't have what you are looking for, they can order it from another library and have it brought in for you. Not to mention, your library card gives you full access to digital materials and a library service called Libby, which contains just about anything you would find both old and current in any bookstore for free. We have been to a few libraries for story time and Oxon Hill is hands down the best. They do a great job picking books that engage the kiddos. Plus the music/movement breaks are always on point. The staff is always friendly, engaging, and welcoming. I adore this library and highly recommend their story time for the little humans. My kids and I come here a few times a week at least, and they are able to find new books every time. We generally check out about 20 items each time, so this is impressive for a smaller library! I'm not familiar with any sections other than reference (that I needed for school work) and YA fiction, but there seems to be a great variety in all genres. They have a lot of study/quiet areas and quiet rooms, and everyone is respectful of others, giving this place a great atmosphere. They regularly display artwork from the local elementary school, which is cool for the kids to see when they go (especially when their own artwork is featured, haha). And there are lots of monthly events, including activities for kids of all ages like book readings and arts and crafts. Overall, a solid choice in Kingstowne.

Buuuut it's also got some aspects that make me go 'whaaaa?' Sunday hours - great. Bigger and roomier and far more natural light - great. More seating - great. Green roof - love it. The library opened a little over a week ago, and an elevator was out of order? I assume that'll be up and running soon? There's an entrance on the ground floor, but it's locked? In the children's section, there's a ledge that looks like a big slide. Kids were playing on it. There are signs that say don't sit or slide on the window ledge. Don't make a fixture that looks like a slide *in the children's section* if it's not to be used that way. Also, signage in the parking garage says to park on the 2nd floor for the library entrance. You enter, go up a level, park, enter .... that's not the library entrance. You're actually supposed to keep going up in the garage, park in the roof. THAT's the parking garage entrance level to the library. Aesthetically, I like the library. I like the expanded hours. But some signage and design choices leave me a bit flummoxed. 3.33 stars

This was the first time I had ever been to this library and I must say, it did not disappoint! The…read morelibrary is cozy but the kids section was open and the selection was vast. I came here so I could get some work done and the kids had a ball - reading, using the computer, and playing in the "kitchen". The staff here was so NICE and accommodating. They were really in tune with the kids. We even got invited to a bird demonstration they did from the humane society, and the kids actually paid attention and made me build the bird feeder that we received and learned how to make from the presentation. Definitely adding this one to the library rotation.

I've been here four times…read more First time, I just wanted to get signed up for a library card so that way I would be set if I ever needed anything down the road. Assuming I would not really be back. The second time, I lost internet in my house for a few hours and went there to work on my laptop for work. The third time, I picked up a book that I had reserved online that they had brought over from the other branch. The fourth time I went in to use the computer to print some tax paperwork. Each time the staff members were ready to help and knowledgeable and I'm really glad because I was in a few tight spots there and I felt like the staff was always ready. I'll def be going back to either get books or study.

This is a wonderful, beautiful library right up against a busy main street (Duke Street) but the…read moreaccess point is through N Pickett Street and with a huge parking lot nestled among mature trees and plenty of shade. As of May 2024, is heavily under construction and restoration, and areas are clearly taped off. The library is still open for business. The interior is clean, bright lit, huge with tall ceilings, books stocked and neatly organized on shelves, areas for newsletters and flyers, clean bathrooms, a separate kids area, computers for Internet access, a lovely very green courtyard, comfortable arm chairs, and a lot of seating. Anyone who lives, works, owns property, owns a business or attends school in Alexandria is entitled to a free library card and allowed full use of the facilities, plus those who live in Arlington, Charles, District of Columbia, Fairfax, Falls Church, Fauquier, Frederick, Loudoun, Montgomery, Prince George's, and Prince William.

I really don't want to hate on a library, but... We visited…read morethis branch this past fall while visiting family in La Plata. We had gone to the story time the previous day at the Waldorf branch and compared to that location this La Plata location was meh, at best. It seemed just as small and old on the outside as it looked on the inside. HOWEVER- the story time and craft was fantastic. The staff leading it were incredible with the kids and there was quite the turnout; it seems like a real local favorite. That day was all about the weather since there happened to be a Hurricane heading towards the east coast. Parking was also quite lacking. We had to park in the lot across the way at the bank; I was nervous the whole time that we'd get towed. Luckily we did not.
