Russell Johnson is the man! My husband had been working with him for years and I'd been doing my own taxes, always feeling like I didn't have time to research claiming my musical expenses as deductions even though they were significant. This year we met with Russell, and he helped me set up my music as a business which I'd never bothered to do before, and saved us tons of money. He's extremely pleasant to work with, loves music and understands musicians' businesses, and his prices are crazy reasonable. We already got our federal refund and it paid for Russell's services 5x over! Only thing is -- call several months in advance of when you want an appointment. You may want to call in December to make an appointment before April 15 of the next year. read more

I'll echo everything in the first review. I have an inlaw apartment and Russ helped me get set up with proper deductions and depreciation. He's saved me thousands over the years. He really shines for contractors and part time workers. Definitely call early to get an appointment, though Accountax will do takes via mail with the consultation happening over the phone or via email. read more

What a disaster. I should have walked out the door as soon as I saw this place. They made a huge mistake on my taxes. And have held my return hostage. Unable to reach ANYONE with the company. Now i get the pleasure of jumping through irs hoops to avoid PAYING $2100. Accountax is a terrible outfit. They used to be great. THEY HAVE SOLD THE BUSINESS TO MORONS!!! Please. So, I finally stopped trying to do my own taxes on those online softwares because having a couple of W-2's plus a few 1099's and some expense write-offs start getting too complicated. I came here based on other Yelpers' reviews and must say that I was not disappointed. The only con I saw and the reason why I left off a star was because the Receptionist and Sergio (the accountant who did my taxes) seemed shy, so I did not feel a proper welcome. In fact, Sergio never introduced himself to me. However, besides that, he was very thorough and knowledgeable. He actually was able to get me a refund when I usually end up having to owe. He also charged me WAY less than H&R Block charges. I was really happy with the results and will definitely come back next year for this year's taxes. So frustrating! My initial tax appointment to file my 2015 tax return was on March 9, 2016. I am a simple married guy, nothing too complicated or highly unique about my financial situation. After hearing nothing from them, I contacted Accountax on April 15 to inquire about my return status. I was told they were so busy and back-logged that they would be filing an extension that very day and because I sounded like I wanted my taxes completed asap, they would add my name to the dry erase board to have completed towards the end of April. May 10 I received an email indicating Blackline Partners has acquired Accountax and my tax person no longer worked there. No assistance, referral, nothing. I am going by to pick-up my tax documents and start all over. They made no effort to provide me a sense of confidence that they were proceeding with my documents. read more

Russ and Sergio have been my families accounts for over 15 years. When my mother passed away, I began getting more involved with the financial aspect of our family business. He was really responsive if we had questions and taxes haven't been the same for us since he sold his business. He is a wonderful and special human being who always made us laugh even when the news wasn't so good. Accountax has been acquired by Blackline Partners LLS and Russ Johnson is now a contractor. The transition has not been smooth. I have been a client of Accountax for approximately 20 years. My 2015 return was not checked for errors--I found an obvious one (this happened only once before). I could not check for additional errors because my documents and working papers have been lost/shredded. This is of concern to me. No explanation or apology has been offered. Hopefully a somewhat chaotic environment will settle down with time. read more

I only gave Russ 5 stars because they didn't have the 6th option. When I was born, I didn't get the math gene but fortunately, he was recommended to me 32 years ago when he was still teaching school and came to my house. Since then, I have never shied away from tax time and actually look forward to catching up with Russ once a year. He is a lifesaver to me. I would travel anywhere to use his services; even back in time to the 50's where San Bruno is. Only drawback: no coffee shop nearby; must bring it in from SF. read more

I started going to Russ when a big tax firm in SF created a disaster of my taxes and the IRS took full advantage. Russ was recommended by an attorney I worked with and he not only fixed my situation but he got all my money back from the IRS and then quite a bit more. Over the years, I moved to Washington State and Florida but Russ was the only one I would trust to do my taxes (thankfully Florida doesn't have State income taxes). I've moved back to the Bay Area and still see Russ today. read more
