I've waited to post this review for the 2015 tax season as I ended up getting an extension until October 15th. I've worked with Katja since I lived in Sacramento 5 years ago. For the first 3 years we worked together it was great. I liked and trusted her so much that after I moved away 3 years ago, I kept her as my accountant despite the distance. Unfortunately after this past tax season I've lost confidence in her as she almost cost me thousands of dollars in penalties. I submitted my tax information to her well before the April 18th deadline (this year it wasn't April 15th as y'all recall). But because I hadn't finalized my retirement plan contributions, I expected we'd apply for an extension. I knew that I'd have to pay my estimated taxes in advance though. The issue is that she completely forgot about me. Literally, on Monday April 18th I still had not heard from her and nothing had been taken care of (despite emails the week before asking if she needed anything else from me). It wasn't until that evening that she got back to me, asking me for documents and figures (deductions) that I had already faxed or emailed several weeks before. I'm not joking when I say that my estimated payment for both state and federal was submitted at 11:59pm that night! Unfrieken believable! I would've been on the hook for a 25% penalty of the amount owed (I'm self employed and don't pay taxes every pay period, you can imagine the thousands of dollars I would've had to pay). To this day I can't believe that almost happened. All because she forgot or ignored my filing until literally the last second! She did such a rush job that I just got a letter from the state tax board asking for more money as my payment was underestimated. I'm giving her 3 stars and not 1 because I can't ignore the first few years she did a good job. But, I was so upset by this last filing and those last stressful hours of April 18th that I can't recommend her to anyone else. I suspect she knows I'm not happy as she has intimated that I find myself an accountant where I live. That, I definitely plan to do. read more

I have used AFS for the last two years since I moved to the state of California. I would consider my taxes moderately complex due to my move (residual income from the former state, sell and purchase of residence in other state and in CA, and rental property). Katja has everything under control. She knows the tax laws and efficiently gets the taxes done. If she needs more information or clarification, this can all be done over e-mail, etc. She is well versed in technology and comfortable with e-filing, etc. Each year, I make an appointment, bring my stuff in, and she takes care of it. After tax season, she asks me to come pick it up. At that point, we usually discuss some further tax planning for the following year. Throughout the year, she is very quick to answer e-mails regarding questions that I might have on tax issues. There is no charge to these "curbside" consultations. Prices I felt were reasonable. I consider my taxes to be mildly complex and I am charged between $100 - $200. I will be continuing to use Katja as my tax advisor. read more

Katja did well with my taxes the first couple years when they were simple. When I started my private practice in 2018, it was a different story. She has not guided me well and I had hired her because I trusted her and needed guidance. She told me my practice was likely to net me an income of 0 the first year and it wasn't necessary to pay quarterly. This was not the case and I ended up owing a somewhat large sum of money. Because I was slow in gathering all of my documents she suggested filing an extension, which she did and I heard nothing more. My husband said at the time he thought I needed to pay by the deadline regardless but since Katja didn't tell me that, and assumed my income would be 0 anyway, I left it alone trusting she would guide me appropriately. Several days ago I received a bill from the IRS for a large chunk of money in penalties and interest for having not paid anything. I forwarded it to Katja to ask her to explain and have not received a response at all. (Incidentally this comes on the heals of losing half my income due to Covid 19 shelter in place orders, so, awesome). Additionally, shortly after she did file my 2018 taxes, I also received notice that there was a mistake made, including a bill and small penalty. I forwarded that to her at the time, assuming she would pay for the penalty and mistake she had made, but never heard from her then either. In short, I can not recommend Accurate Financial Services for being accurate or trustworthy, and those seem like pretty important qualities to have in a tax professional. read more

My review for Katja is long overdue. After calling and emailing several accountants, Katja was by far the most polite, competent, and professional accountant I spoke with. That alone won my initial business, and her speed, accuracy, and organization kept it. I came to Katja with an issue from the FTB (hint: don't file your own taxes! Just give your books to Katja), and she was able to inform me of tax breaks and routes to save a lot of money. That was the point I realized it was far better to just focus on my business operations and leave the tax/business finance issues to AFS.
