My bank account balance was less than $2, and my work schedule is such that I can't get to a bank to make a teller withdrawal anyway--it was either cash the check, or starve. So, the check arrived Tuesday night, and Wednesday, I went down here after work to try to cash it. Nope, sorry, can't do it--can't cash a personal check without a phone number to verify it. I didn't know the phone number, so I had to scramble to get home. Home, for me, is Silver Spring, and taking the subway was out of the question. I had to scramble up to Ballston Mall, hop on the bus, and pray that I made it to 16th Street in downtown DC before my transfer time ran out and I was forced to walk. I made it...but not by much. I had to beg on the street for my next day's bus fare: I literally had no cash to commute on, and as for food? Hah! So,I eventually got home and got the phone number, wrote that on the check, and went back on Thursday afternoon. The same clerk who told me to pound sand the day before was in the back, on a long personal call that sounded like a script for a good soap opera, and she kept the conversation going as our transaction started (EXTREMELY unprofessional). She said she couldn't cash it THIS time, either. Apparently, the computer wasn't working--likely excuse!--and because it was after 6 o'clock, nobody from the bank could verify the check. NOT, I should add, that she made any attempt to actually CALL the bank--heck, she could have just pretended to call, gone through the motions, acted like she'd gotten an answering machine, and I wouldn't have been the wiser, but even THAT was apparently too much effort. Oh, and the phone number for the check writer that she sent me away the prior day to go get? She didn't even try to call THAT number, either. So, okay, thanks for nothing, and here we go again racing to 16th Street and hoping I won't have to walk for seven miles to get home. Now, fortunately, my new bank card was in my mailbox, so it worked out in the end, but only by accident. There is no way for me to describe the mental anguish of having to beg for bus fare while carrying a $100 check that I couldn't cash. I hope I never have to do business with this establishment again. "Caveat emptor" isn't NEARLY strong enough. "Avoid this place like a bad case of syphilis" is probably a bit closer to how strenuously I'd urge you to avoid this place. Given the choice between trying to cash another check here in an emergency, or doing janitorial work, I would gladly choose to clean every single toilet in FedEx Field. WITH MY TONGUE. This place is in a slightly sketchy spot and is sketchy as a whole. Not uncommon to see crackheads…read moreenter/exit. Folks coming in to try to buy single cigarettes, Blacks, etc. (and not having enough money) is common. I've been here a few times and it's pretty much the same experience every time. Inside, you will find some random snack, snacks, and drink drinks, a ton of smoking supplies, a various types, Western Union booth, and a lottery/horse racing/betting area. When I need to send funds to my fam in other countries, I stop in. The Western Union is in the back. There used to be a man who worked at that booth. Now, there is a young woman who is pleasant enough. My biggest complaints about this place are the clientele and where it's situated.

It's more of a dimly lit corner in a very sketchy liquor store. I just so happen to see the very bright black and yellow Western Union sign in a window out of the corner of my eye. So we tried to turn into the parking lot but it's a damn near impossible right to make. ESPECIALLY at the last minute if u don't know its there (which we did not). So we had to park somewhere else and walk to it. I do not have a lot of experience with Western Unions but I know there's got to be better looking and more conveniently located ones than this. I filled in some paper work with the few answers that I knew and handed over my ID and they handed me my money. That part, at least, was easy. Especially since I didn't know my transfer number or location and the amount since my dad called himself wiring money to me as a surprise for Christmas. So it seems that as long as you have your ID, they can help you. But this was only after standing in the main line of the liquor store just for them to point me into the Western Union corner which is actually a counter in between some fridges filled with malt liquor. The service is questionable, the location is questionable, the clientele is questionable. Avoid this Western Union like the plague.
