Her depth of knowledge on a wide range of topics was appreciated as well as her openness to whatever questions were rising up. I also loved that my child had a chance to learn to socialize without me in a safe environment where I was still in the building and it was a welcomed relief to get out of the house especially in winter. Most of all on top of all this was the introduction and nurturing of a connected and caring community that are invested in raising healthy kids in a healthy home environment and accepting all the messiness of how it looks like on a day to day basis. I love them both and made quite a few amazing items. In high school I made a chess board, and a desk. I always wanted to go back and experiment and do some artistic as well as functional items. Well this is the place to do it. It's like having a wood shop, a metal shop, textiles, ceramics, lasers, plasma cutters, routers... And the name of the place says it all. Community maker space. when my kids were born, I bought the materials to make them some rocking horses, but did not have a large enough space to lay everything out. I have plans for Adirondack chairs, and a few others that are just wasting away because I have no space to make them. And then somebody told me about this place. They have a very affordable monthly/yearly membership. Right now they are showing $60 a month or $500They have a good process to make sure that you are safe and able to work the machines. If you need help, they have workshops and classes. Also there are quite a few experience people hanging around, with a wealth of knowledge that are very helpful. Yes I cannot wait to start my adventure.

I went to this non-profit center and food bank Wednesday, April 3, 2019. This building is located…read morenext to a school. They have small parking a lot (no handicapped spaces, by the way), which was full because one car was not parked correctly and took up two spaces. I saw someone else access the place by pulling by the center using the school parking, but there is a sign it is only for school personnel during the day, so I was weary of that. Instead, I parked on the street, which was a little difficult, since there are like literally 10 feet piles of snow still in South Lake Tahoe, even though it was April! WTF? I used to live in the snow-belt of upstate New York, and by April there was only a little bit of snow. When I went in, the office was empty, as they were having a meeting in the backroom. A lower-ranking worker, who was outside bringing in the pallets of food, was nice, telling me to go to the back room, and also apologizing for blocking the entry way. He also sneaked me extra bread at the end. The other employee who came out of the meeting was super friendly, and showed me what to do. It is very informal there. There was no line. You just walk in and you can take one pre-made bag of commodities, and whatever bread and other items they have on the shelf by the kitchen. There are no forms or verifications required. Their website said they only had USDA commodities (food) beginning on the second Friday of the month until they run out, but I guess they must have changed that. In the office there were all kinds of brochures about other services offered in the community. This location also offers English language classes, parenting classes, and a clothing bank, and runs a used book store called The Bookworks, at the mall in South Lake Tahoe. I could easily say that this 5-star review is also for the organization itself since they've been doing so much great work for decades to protect and clean up the lake, educate the community, and support pretty much every positive environmental effort and initiative that affects Lake Tahoe! But back to the new shop & headquarters that just opened 3-4 months ago. My husband & I dropped by recently to check it out and were very impressed by their beautiful new space! Not just a store, but also an education & training space. They even have a beautiful outdoor space set up like a small amphitheater and learning/gathering space. Inside the store you'll find all the great "Keep Tahoe Blue" merchandise that they also sell via their online store. From shirts to hats to gifts to glasswares to various home goods, and more! They even have their own branded yoga mat and coffee beans! We picked up a new snowboarding neck gaiter and a few gifts, including the Lake Tahoe themed Monopoly board game! Proceeds all go to support the nonprofit of course, so it's even better knowing that you're supporting such a great cause and giving back to Lake Tahoe. The only think we noticed though was that the gift shop is only opened Thursday-Saturday starting at 12pm. Not sure if that's the same time for the museum. Bears are one of my all time favorite critters - always have been. I'm guessing this is due to…read moregrowing up with them in your local culture - in this case the woods of the northern section of the lower peninsula of Michigan. Bears are a way of life up there - and the countryside is the all the better for it. Bears live up on the mountain behind me - on Bull Run Mountain in Haymarket, VA - but I've yet to see one and I would guess their population density is less than other areas given habitat and food issues. Anyhow, while in Tahoe City - and the Lake Tahoe Basin in general - Bears are everywhere! Bear notices and warnings, Bear-proof trash containers, Bear Art, Bear Furniture, Bear Decor, and more I love it! Invariably, conflict occurs between man and Bear and usually the Bear loses out. Most conflicts occur due to ignorance on our part - a lack of self awareness when in Bear country and a lack of adherence to Best Practices to avoid conflicts with our furry friends. A land that loses it's Bears has lost it's soul. The Bear League works to educate people about Bears, and thus minimize or eliminate conflicts so that we can have happy, safe, fat, wild bears! The lady at Mountain Critters told me about the organization after I saw the brochures for the organization and asked about it - I decided to join! Cool organization with laudable and valuable goals!
