Chase Hill Farms had some really nice looking pork, and their sausages and cheeses were really nice too. Meadowfed lamb also sells chicken! Red Fire Farm had really delicious carrots. Bread Obsession carried really nice, dense yet flavorful, caraway seed rye bread.

Sure we got cheese and pasta and bread galore, which was awesome, but there were only two or three veggie stands out of a total of probably 20 something vendors. That disappointed me. Also, the winter market is held inside the Russell Garden Center which is great because it's a sauna in there as opposed to snowy outside! Also you get to browse the vendors among the gorgeous plants and flowers. However, it was a very tight space and the foot traffic in there was heavy and downright crowded. It was difficult to maneuver around and not bump into something. Other than that, props to all of the farmers and vendors that participated. Parking: I couldn't find any free parking except for street options. There's a municipal parking lot across the bridge where it's $1 for 1 hour on Saturdays.

I have now been four or five times this summer. They match up to 15 dollars a week at Lexington farmers market. You can use this money at any booth! Your only limit is that you can't buy hot prepared food. You can buy frozen tamales, frozen dumplings etc. go to the farmers market manager tent, present your food stamp card and tell them the amount you would like pulled off your food stamp card. If you decide you want 15 dollars, they'll match your 15! They give you paper money that doesn't expire, so if you don't spend all the money you can save it for next week or next month or whatever works for you. There is also another program that is included with ebt, right now it's 40 dollars a month (minimally, I think) that you can use at select booths (Kelley farms, busa, farmer Dave & I think stillmans farms, maybe another I'm forgetting) if you use this, you hand them your ebt card directly. They will run your card directly at the booth. The money you spend out of this 40 will be put back on your ebt card for the month. I suggest using this money first so you have time to use the replenished amount on your card. This does not roll over month to month, so use it up! Review of farmers market: I absolutely adore this farmers market. It's spread over a flat piece of field with tons of parking on worthen road. There are some booths that come every few weeks, but there are always great booths with produce, baked goods, dairy and fish. I absolutely love Kelley farms. It's an organic Asian greens and vegetables tent. The owners are a lovely married couple. We got the best bok choy and Chinese tomatoes. We got absolutely giant scallions that were delicious grilled, but are also so good in stirfry, quiche and salads. If you don't know what something is, ask! The owner will explain anything you need. She's great! She let me sample a tomato (it was pretty big!) and it was so so yummy. I bought a bag and immediately came home and made a tomato salad. Kelley farms is my go-to now, everything is so fresh, so yummy and elevates any meal your preparing. I got a (very affordable) pound of haddock that was so fresh and yummy. They were so welcoming and answered all my questions. Busa farms is always packed with delicious produce. The fruit and vegetable options are extensive. The booth always looks fantastic. They are so friendly. I forget which booth it was, but one booth has delicious scones and zucchini loaves. They are also very organized and have beautiful produce. The farmers market managers are always on site, so friendly and do a great job remembering returning patrons. On super hot days, they have staff handing out cold towels to the staff running all the booths and I love seeing that they take care of each other. For farmers market week they had performers for kiddos and live music. I appreciate the work they put into making this farmers market a community hot spot and not just another grocery trip. There are also art booths that come and sell handmade art. Last week there was a ceramics booth with absolutely stunning mugs, stoneware and art. Tania, (the woman who runs the booth) teaches ceramics classes in Lexington for both children and adults. 8 week sessions, very affordable. Tania was so friendly, happy to answer questions and welcoming. She and her husband made it clear that all art levels are welcome. I signed up for a session before I even left the market. I highly suggest Lexington farmers market!

You can get fresh veggies at one stand, fresh fish at another, fresh beef at a third, and sample some wine and cheese at others! There is no lack of fresh bread or baked goods for sale, and even some crafters at the market. And don't worry if its too hot outside because there is a gelato stand and plenty of stands that sell fresh lemonade. The place is always hopping even at 2pm or 530pm! I wish their hours were later because it was always tough getting here after work. There is plenty of metered parking on the surrounding streets and also right off the bike trail.

We've been CSA members for a few years now, but will not be renewing. We somehow got past the…read moresummer of eggplant (and I know a LOT of ways to cook eggplant), the fall/winter of parsnips and turnips (half a box of them every week), and the spring pantry share this year with no pantry goodies. The breaking point came this summer, when we got a total of six tomatoes. Six. And I can even get past that, except for the fact that I walk by their farmers' market stall week after week to see piles of tomatoes for sale. Even better, they offer a tomato-only share for members that pay extra. I'm sorry, but if you're not harvesting enough tomato to provide more than six over a 12-week period to your regular shareholders, do not offer a tomato-only share. It's simply not how business should be done, and is especially unfair to four-season members that pay in full months in advance to support your operation. I know farming is hard work, and I feel good to have supported other local meat and veggie farms. However, Siena Farms is the only one I've encountered that puts profits above their shareholders. Not recommended.

The smallest bag (1/2 peck?) was $7.50, and that got us 23 small-to-upper-medium-sized Macouns, Macs, Golden Delicious, and Gala apples. Trees and rows that were ready for picking were clearly marked with staked signs marking the fruit trees' species, and the egress portions of the orchard was accessible to folks using a variety of assistive/adaptive devices (wheelchairs, crutches, canes, walkers, et cetera). The hayride was a lovely and fun touch. There were perhaps forty to fifty people of all ages picking apples at the same time we were picking, but the orchard is so sizable, it did not feel cramped or crowded, and there was ample fruit for all of us and then some. As we were leaving, I noticed a white peach tree still in fruit, and I asked if I could buy some peaches. The owner said yes, and she picked them right off the branch and sold them to us. Oh, yes, I had fresh white peaches that night. They, like the apples, were flavorful and I felt incredibly lucky to have timed our visit just right. They had the first of the pumpkins for the year, too. Definitely put me in the mood for the season! Best of all, I wasn't sure how they did pest control, but I was very pleased to come home and read on their website that they do IPM (integrated pest management), rather than rely on conventional commercial methods. We'll definitely be back to this gorgeous orchard full of passionate farmers!

This is not my first time blueberry picking, so I know what to look for and how to pick berries. The area is fairly short - meaning the netting to keep the birds out is very low. If you're tall, you're going to be dragging the netting through your hair or killing your back from crouching. Bushes are not trimmed and maintained well. However, the height of the berries are perfect for children to be able to pick their own. After crouching for a while and leaving with 4 lbs of berries, we were happy with our haul. However, after coming home and washing them to prepare for storage and eating, the nightmare began. Nearly all the berries have small white bugs on them. No biggie, fairly easy to wash and scrub. However, when worms and grubs starting to come out of the berries, I knew that this was not a great picking place. Their blueberries looked great, but clearly they're dealing with bug issues that will kill their crops and customer base. Wasted money down the drain, but better than eating bug infested fruits. It's a bummer as I've picked fruits at their Tyngsboro location with no issues. But I'd steer clear on this location and drive further to go up to Tyngsboro.

Pick your own strawberries, pick your own blueberries, and pick your own Jack Russel Terriers!…read more Yes, really - besides selling various types of seasonal produce at their farm, their website also mentions that Jack Russel Terriers - Irish Shorties to be specific - are available. That was very obvious when we pulled in and asked where to drive/park. The Terriers were very willing to help, though their human gave us better directions. Today, strawberries were available both pre-picked and pick-your-own. We opted for the latter, and we picked 4 quarts in less than half an hour - not bad when you consider it is still a little early in the season, and we had to navigate through some slightly soggy spots from last night's tropical storm. The final cost was roughly $4 per quart - a great deal for farm-fresh strawberries. Later in the year they will have blueberries, tomatoes, corn and pumpkins, and a corn maze in the fall. Reasons to keep coming back! Oh, and be very careful driving out back. We had to also deal with a lovesick rooster who was doing his own version of pick-your-own with various pursued hens, none of whom understood the concept of moving cars.

There's even a knife sharpening station! As for the prices, I feel that they are completely in line with what you would pay for locally-grown produce. You can't expect to find the same prices on tomatoes as you would at Super Stop n' Shop, simply because it takes more energy and resources to grow locally and without chemical trickery. I don't know about you, but I'd rather pay a few more cents for a homegrown, grown-in-the-sun tomato than an overgrown tomato that tastes like a water balloon. Pet owners, make sure you bring someone to watch your dog while you shop. Because this is a place that sells food, bringing your pet near the tents is not permitted. (I wish there was a doggy drop-off area to help with this!)

I've purchased hand-made jewelry and handbags as well as CD's from home-town musicians. Speaking of musicians, there's always someone playing music, which entertains everyone. There are usually toddlers dancing to the tunes. My suggestion would be to offer more ready-to-eat meals. I would like to be able to grab that day's lunch and bring it home to serve.
