Every time I've stopped by to drop off a donation of food items, the employees and volunteers have been very helpful. Parking is very limited, with all the trucks and other equipment in the lot, so it's good that someone is usually outside to help. They allow me to stop at the front, and even bring a dolly and unload the food from my car to bring it in. They will also provide a written donation receipt, upon request. With the number of families losing their homes and everything during the recent storms, it's reassuring that the Hawaii Foodbank will be there to help provide relief.

It takes a special kind of person with dedication and commitment to operate a successful program like this. Including loving, caring, understanding, compassionate and grateful. Sounds easy but I can tell you it's very hard work just as a volunteer. There's a lot of behind the scenes support from the team like truck drivers on the road all day to the warehouse crew providing logistical assistance day in and out. Administration and Management to the custodians and maintenance people keeping things clean and running. MAHALO PLENTY TO EACH AND EVERYONE. You're the BEST! Never go hungry.

I've volunteered with many organizations and must say, I had one of the best experiences at Angel…read moreNetwork Charities. They're located on Kalanianaole Highway in Hawaii Kai and share a parking lot with Calvary by the Sea Lutheran Church. The organization is one of the Hawaii Foodbank's recipients to distribute food to those in need and they serve the Hawaii Kai and Waimanalo area. Upon arrival, we were greeted by other volunteers and they were immediately grateful as they do not normally have enough volunteers to sort and distribute food. We began by placing fresh produce in boxes. There was a variety of fruits and vegetables-apples, bananas, green beans, etc. and each box was to be given to a family. Tables were set up outside of the warehouse and we lined them with more food-loaves of bread, frozen meals and veggies, soup, and even cookies and donuts. In addition, there were pallets of dry goods available that consisted of mac and cheese boxes, cereal bars and crackers. There were people lined up around the corner waiting for their food baskets. Angel Network is pretty organized in the process of distributing the food. They allow a few people to check in at once and then distribute the pre-packed produce boxes. Once they received their boxes, they could shop the line of other food. Many of the clients were so grateful and a few of them were a little acquisitive and had to be told there was a limit to what they could take. Sadly, this is a result of not being able to afford enough food on their own. Cleanup wasn't too bad. We put the undistributed food away, folded up the tables and then lunch was provided for us. One of the volunteers graciously cooked a hearty meal for the volunteers and we were told that that lunch is always provided for volunteers. Another thing that's so great about this community effort is that the clients also volunteer their time as a way to give back to the organization. Many of the volunteers that day were also recipients of the food distribution. I think Angel Network Charities is one of those unsung neighborhood heroes and to some, surprisingly in a more affluent neighborhood. Just goes to show that there are always people in need-no matter where they live. This is one of the organizations I will continue to volunteer my time with.

So Flavorful and Filling…read more Lahaina Chicken is seriously delicious. The chicken is so flavorful and juicy, and you can literally smell it while walking through the food court. That's how you know it's good. I like the white meat, and you can order à la carte for $4.50 per piece--and the pieces are huge. I got one piece with a side of mashed potatoes, and it was more than filling for a meal. Because it's in the Ala Moana food court, it's quick and easy when you want something hot and satisfying. Plus, there's ample seating in the food court, and parking is easy since it's Ala Moana. They also have a hamburger steak, and the piece is massive. For sides, you can choose things like mac and cheese or long rice, which makes it easy to build a solid plate. Great option when you want something fast but still full of flavor. I'll definitely be back.

Somehow Jamie W and I end up here when we don't give any forethought on dinner options. This is my roundabout way of saying that this food stand was a miss for me. Feeling particularly carnivorous, I was drawn to this Hawaiian-style hofbrau because they offered several meat combo options. I ordered the $23.50 Roast Chicken and Prime Rib Double Combo Meal (Photo 5). It seemed like a fair price for a lot of protein and three sides. When we finally found a place to sit, I was immediately disappointed at the overly rare condition of the prime rib, chewy and hard to digest. Ironically, the chicken was overcooked presumably from being under the heat lamps too long. At least the steamed broccoli, grilled zucchini, and creamy risotto were edible, but it was too late. I dumped a lot of it in the trash. FOOD - 2 stars...thought it was impossible to make bad prime rib...I was wrong AMBIANCE - 2 stars...crazy-busy in this food courts SERVICE - 1.5 stars...barely any interaction TOTAL - 2 stars...almost totally skippable RELATED - Exploring Hawaii?
