Built in 1908 by the Nashville, Chattanooga & St Louis Railway Company (interestingly L&N or…read moreLouisville & Nashville Railroad Company-the company that build the train depot in the neighboring city of Woodstock, GA owned 55% of NC&StL in 1908.) The railroad tracks that the depot sits on is known as The Western & Atlantic Railroad which was built by the state of Georgia in 1836 at a reportedly cost of 5 million dollars (125 million in today's money.) It is the building of this 138 miles rail tracks that really put Atlanta on the map... If you're a Walking Dead Fan then you know about Terminus...well that was the name originally given to the city of Atlanta. Terminus means "the end point" which was what Atlanta was at the time. The "end of the line" for W&A railroad. Most historians believe that the "end point" probably is where the Georgia Railroad Freight Depot is in downtown Atlanta. (if you're feeling extra history-ish you can go see the stone marker that marked the spot of "the end" at Underground Atlanta. It's known as The Atlanta Zero Mile post.) The Kennesaw Train Depot was restored to its former glory in 2001 at a cost of $150,000 according of their website. It now is a museum and an event venue. There is also a small park next to it known as Depot Park with a small play ground, an outdoor museum narrating the great locomotive chase of the civil war and a pedestrian underpass. In front of the museum there is a tall lamp clock dedicated to city council member Jerry Worthan for his 20 years of service to the city of Kennesaw. Across the street there is the Southern Museum of Civil WAr Locomotive History Museum that houses the famous locomotive "The General". It's a great place to visit for any Civil war history buff....hope you'll check it out.

We were able to snag free street parking right next the theatre, greeted promptly and kindly upon arrival and checked in just a few feet from the door. We bypassed the concessions stand - which stemmed quite popular - and were escorted to our seats. Comfortable seating, possibly not a bad view in the house. Beautifully maintained. Great acoustics. Every time there was a musical number, we could NOT hear the actors singing. The music was too darn loud. I thought it was me (not really). Nope! During intermission and the end, I overheard others talking about the horrible audio. Several left at intermission- I wish I did. The mics- also need lots of help. Parade- Leo Frank was supposed to be a good event. Hard to enjoy what you can't hear. Seats also very uncomfortable.

The gallery features several local artists, one of my new favorites being Steven Lester. I have found at least four of his paintings that I really love! It just feels "hometown" to me each time I come in. The owners are incredibly gracious and welcoming! Very knowledgeable about the artists represented there. Stumbled into this gallery on a breezy Sunday afternoon. The doors were wide open and it was their…read more'Figure & Nude' exhibition. Tiny place with refreshing pieces. Even though the place was so small, everything was so captivating that me and my boyfriend spent quite a bit of time looking through everything. It's located in the Marietta square, so there is plenty to do around this gallery.

This was one of the more impressive-looking buildings on Kennesaw State's campus. It is free to…read moreenter, though they did ask for my name. The building is a performance space and has a nice-looking concert hall. The actual art amounted to a couple of rooms and a spread-out open area as one enters. There were some interesting pieces there, but I was surprised there wasn't more art within the amount of physical space we're talking about. It's certainly a place I would check in now and then were I a student here, but as a visitor, it was only a short diversion, not something that I would come a long way to see.

Every fall I make a special effort to see the Booth Photography Guild show and exhibit at the Booth…read moreWestern Art Museum. That's how I discovered the Downtown Gallery this year. The gallery, located just a block or two from the museum, is an effort by the museum to "highlight the talents of local and regional artists...." They have a pretty cool, and commendable, goal of making Cartersville a more art focused community. They go about doing that by selling original art by members of the Booth Artists Guild and the Booth Photography Guild and supplement it with prints, posters, books and sculptures of artists who are part of the Booth's collection. All art work is framed and having spent a small fortune on framing the art I own, I was amazed at how reasonable prices are. Even better, I don't have to wait for the Booth Photography Guild show to see some of the great work its members produce. Work gets rotated every three months and since I don't get to Cartersville that often, I'm guaranteed of seeing something fresh when I go. The Downtown Gallery is a nice addition to Cartersville's historic downtown.
