This store doesn't deserve even one star. How great for business that they have walls of fish and animals but how absolutely horrendous for any living thing that is stuck in a cage or box in this place. Imagine a condemn home with black mold and the worst smell but houses all sorts of animals. This is legitimately hording. There are cages of mice and rats shoved in every corner, under and over shelves. The music blaring throughout the whole store must be pure torture to these poor animals who have to endure this all day long. This place is dirty, disgusting, and full of dead fish in the tanks, dirtier than you even want to imagine. Petco is luxury at treating their animals compared to this crap hole. Do not support this place and for the love of God, where is PETA when you need it! read more

Animal care and husbandry has been my career for many years. I have worked in pet stores, zoos, rescues, and rehabilitation facilities. Trust me when I say that I have never seen animals being so poorly cared for as when I visited Adam's Pet Safari. Filthy, overcrowded cages were every where. Reptiles and mammals were crammed in small, inappropriately outfitted enclosures. Birds were stuffed in cages and glass enclosures with feces everywhere. The fish and amphibians weren't any better. The staff seemed nice enough, but clearly there is a HUGE lack of proper animal husbandry knowledge at this location. Seeing so many animals housed in such horrible conditions was heart breaking. I wish I had taken more pictures as proof. Please trust me, you do NOT want to give this place your money and business. read more

I have recently went back into the store to see if there has been even a slight chance of improvement since I have written my last review. Nope! Of course not, still sad, miserable abuse animals and heartless employees. My heart breaks for these poor creatures, animal control must be involved. I have also noticed that the store now has four stars and many five star reviews, either the owner has created multiple accounts to bring up his reviews or dirty people with dirty living situations have that find the store to be just as good as their own living situation at home. Of course, they would believe that this is a well defined store. I will leave it at that. Do the right thing, adopt these poor animals, and give them a better life, PS, definitely not the people that have left five star ratings. read more

If I could give this business 0 stars I would. The smell was horrendous, it was at least 80 degrees in the store, there were multiple wrong setups(crested geckos had no where to hide, cockatiels were living with parakeets, Pac-Man frogs had aquatic setups with no eco earth), reptiles had stuck shed, reptiles water bowls were filled with feces and stunk, rabbits had no food or hay, arowanas were extremely skinny, saltwater fish looked absolutely terrible, corals had no lights, I could go on and on. Don't shop here or support this type of animal abuse. I have NEVER been to a pet store that was this horrible and I've been to my fair share of stores. To the owner, do better! read more

I'm gonna start this off with the fact that I've worked around animals for years, done plenty of rescue work, and currently do work on a rescue farm with many different types of animals and species, and yet I've never been to a store this bad. The quality of care they give to their animals is extremely poor with broken down cages on the floor with mice, rats, guinea pigs, and other small creatures, filled to the brim with little room to move. Having lots of large exotic birds crammed into small cages with little flight room and many of them looking visibly depressed. Some of the birds were even chewing on the walls and flying into them repeatedly trying to get out. Many of the animals did not have proper care even if they did have a cage to themself, though it was still very small, were lacking food and water which are basic necessities for any creature. The frogs were put in small plastic containers children use to catch bugs with a single leafy branch inside. The entire store is very crammed and disorganized, with the window view being blocked by tanks and beds that prevent you from seeing inside the store. One thing I did notice was the animals with the least amount of care were put in the back, showing that they are in fact aware of the deplorable conditions their animals are in and are trying to prevent people from noticing that. read more

One of the only stores in a 25 mile radius that sells my dogs food, considering switching him to something else so I never have to come back. This was the first time I was at the store and within two minutes Adam left that impression upon me.. I honestly don't know how this place is still in business. The poor animals are living in filth and do not look like they are being properly fed and cares for.. he also Has ridiculous rules for buying certain animals.. which I understand this is Covid and we are living in unpredictable times. However Adam was unwilling to even come to a reasonable solution, all because he has no problem getting more money from someone else.. please don't bother wasting your time at this establishment. Got my bunny here about a month ago, and forgot to write a review about how impressed I was with the shop here. First off, they really care about their animals and you can tell off the start, before selling you a bunny you won't be able to leave without a cage or the right things you need. They make sure you take their bunnies home with the right size cage and everything they need, LOVE IT. And as soon as I came in, I got the help i needed from the girl with short hair, around 18/19 years old, who was VERY helpful, stayed overtime closing hours explaining everything I needed and helped me find everything I need. Ontop of that, I called before hand if they could put the bunny on hold and they did! Ontop of that, the bunny is healthy and has the most kindest personality! One of the most cuddly, cutest, and healthiest bunnies are Definitely sold HERE! Will definitely recommend this place to everyone ! read more

adam's pet safari is a frustrating place because it could be so good. not many old school places left like this and they get things you'll never see in the big box stores. Ive also found the staff , Adam included, very friendly and helpful...BUT, they don't believe in cleaning tanks ever apparently and have never heard of glass cleaner. If youre going to ask 500 bucks for a snake, dont treat it like its worthless..clean the tank once in a while...Adam, pay someone good who cares about your business and cares about animal husbandry because your place is really starting to look nasty. Adam's has a great selection of fish and reptiles, plus a bunch of other furry or feathered critters. Equally great selection of dog, fish and cat food. The first time I went in there about four years ago I was reluctant, mostly because of the strip mall location. One of the ways in which Adam's really shines is the knowledge and helpful advice from Adam and all of the staff. From dealing with ammonia spikes in my big tank to setting up a safe and functioning community in my tropical tank to getting my son's finicky bearded dragon to eat, Adam and staff have been very helpful. I am so disappointed in this store. I visited with my friend and after 10 mins we had to leave just because it was too hard to take in how terribly these animals are being treated. It is cluttered, dirty, the animals appear unhealthy, and are not properly taken care of. Zero stars. Brought my children to choose a ferret after losing our last one to cancer. Made a point of doing it the day before our (quiet) Easter so that we would be home for the whole break and be able to do a great job acclimating it to our house. Chose a sweet little ferret, employee boxed it up. Out of no where the owner told us it was 'reserved' and sold it to someone who not only came into the store after us, they never even held it. (The fact that she looked like she crawled out of a dumpster and acknowledged that she came from a state where ferret possession isn't even legal is concerning in and of itself). The absolute piece of trash owner took the ferret from my child, who was just told it was coming home with us, and sent it home with his client because it had been 'reserved' for days. This makes it even worse because there was no sign on the cage and the employees didn't even know, because they tried to send it home with us! The owner wasn't even that sorry even though both of my kids were crying- my younger one literally openly sobbing; he was more mad we didn't want to take home the other ferret that drew blood when the employee picked him up. Zero real apology from people who absolutely screwed up, and the small mammals are disgustingly over crowed, especially their 'breeder' mice. I'll never go here again and will heavily discourage anyone from giving that heartless man a dollar. read more

We visited Adams Pet Safari when we were new to the area (a few years ago) and needed a simple dog leash for our Golden. The store does have a very large selection of fish. But, like others, we found the store dark, dirty and the staff (including Adam) very unfriendly. We only went back one other time. After that, it was worth the drive to Route 10 so as to have some decent customer service. Now that there is a new pet store entering the picture in Chester, the staff and Adam will appreciate all their customers and change their tune (maybe). A little competition is good for everyone. It's sad because I want to support a local business, but unfortunately I cannot. The store is disgusting, and the animals are kept in horrid conditions. They have a surplus of animals with a lack of space for them. The rabbits never have enough hay, the reptiles are kept in tiny tanks, and the chinchillas sleep on metal cage wire. Last time I was there I picked up a dog bowl & it had cob webs with a dead daddy long leg attatched to it. The store is so unsanitary and I feel so bad for the poor animals that have to spend part of their lives crammed in here. One of the workers also handled a rabbit so poorly she was so rough with it, I felt so bad for the poor baby. The owner should be ashamed of himself. Profit should not come at the expense of proper conditions for animals. DO BETTER!!!! read more

NO BIG BOX BLAH HERE...20 year customer here who travels from the other side of the County to go to The Safari. Don't be tempted by the shiny new Uber Pet Stores with their large space but limited selection. if you know your fish, you will visit Adam's regularly. He imports his own stuff and sells uncommon and good sized animals. North jersey aquarium society members get a discount, too. His frozen and live food selection is unmatched in the State. Adam's is also one of the few pet shops left that sells rare reptiles and amphibians. Plus other small mammals. Adam knows his stuff like few else can, and trains his staff, unlike most Chains with revolving door workers. You will also find a wider variety of brands than at chain stores. His specialty dog and cat foods bring customers from around the area. Don't let the look of a traditional locally owned pet store deceive you. This is the real deal here and worth a visit. If you want to make a day of it, I would advise a morning or late afternoon visit to Willowood in Chester, arguably NJ's nicest botanical garden. It's an old estate including a walking trail through its woods and streams. Lots of trees and plants and flowers you don't see anywhere else. Then grab a bite in historic downtown (amazing charcoal burger at The Public House) and visit Adam's. read more

In short the place is half decent. The reptile area and small pet area is quite dirty,(but you could say that about the entire store) and the rats were kept pretty poorly. The staff were nice and i had no issues with someone being mean. I did feel like I was being rushed though. I have 2 rats from here, and one was sick and overweight from the time we entered the store. Just wish they could take better care of their animals, and clean up more. read more

Adam's pet safari is my go to store for my Bernese Mountain dog and my Leopard Gecko. Adam and his staff have been very helpful with information about food and remedies for both when needed. They treat my dog like a king. It's his favorite place to visit. The store is not flashy, but well stocked and they care for all of their pets as if they were their own. I have never had an issue with any animals I have purchased from Adams Pet Safari. I have purchased fresh and saltwater fish, reptiles, and birds from here and have not had an issue. Adam is a very knowledgeable person, and has helped me many times when I had a question about the care of an animal. I have been in many other pet shops, and I can honestly say Adams is by far the best one I have been in. The reviewer that said it was dirty and Adam doesn't care about his animals is way off base. As far as the health of the animals in store - they are in terrific health. There's always people working on the cleaning of the cages/tanks. This place also has one heck of a selection of fish. I am always able to find what I am looking for, and almost every time I go, there's an oddball fish that I have to keep myself from walking out of the store with. There's a pretty decent selection of reptiles there too. I have purchased some different kingsnakes, chameleons, and a green tree python from here. There is also a great selection of dry goods there too. Keep in mind lately I have been purchasing mostly dry goods for reptiles so that's what I'm basing this on. Anythign I need is found there. If you have any doubt as to the selection and health of the animals, and the knowledge if the staff, try going to a big box store such as Petco or Petsmart, and then walk into here. Adams may not be as big size wise as the big box stores, but what you walk out with at Adams is 100 times better than you'll get anywhere else. read more

Adam can be a little gruff, but if you don't act like a jerk he's a cool guy and will really help you out. He didn't carry a particular size of Greenies I needed for my dog, and when I asked him if he would ever carry them, he special ordered them for me! No chain pet stores would ever do that. He also gave me an amazing deal on them - normally that box would have cost about $75 at a chain, he only charged me $50. His tank prices are average, but the kits are good deals and so are the fish. The guy Randall takes stellar care of them. One more thing - whenever Adam feeds the snakes / lizards live food, he covers the cages with paper so that customers don't get upset and kids don't see. I think that's pretty decent. read more

The filth, putrid smell and poor conditions for the animals, such as severe over crowding of the birds, and rodents, along with the filth is deplorable. The ferrets pen had feces smeared on the glass. There were about 50 mice to a glass cage, and a bird cage with about 6-7 larger sized birds crammed into a single bird cage, all trying to sit on the same perch. Very sad. Somebody needs to investigate this place. read more

Yeah a little dark in there, not as fresh and flashy as a Petco or Petsmart, but you'd be hard put to find a better selection of reptiles, amphibians, fish or tarantulas anywhere else. He can also order stuff for you and charges close to wholesale price for them. He doesn't make profit on the tanks so they're pretty cheap (again, wholesale price), he's helpful if you're nice and genuinely care about your pet. Really great selection of small animals, fish, reptiles. A lot of great products too. I've owned a few rats and guinea pigs that were born in the store and they were good, healthy pets. My issue is the cleanliness of the store. The small pets area is, there is no other way to put it, but foul. Dust, grime, and animal dirt everywhere and the whole store has a horrible stench. I would give this place 5 stars but truly believe they need to step it up with the cleanliness. seems like a health hazard. read more

I drove 50 minutes today to come to this pet store, trying to avoid the big box store, Pet Smart, thinking it would be better. Granted, I don't know Adam's knowledge about pets, but I must say, I was very disappointed. The store is filthy...the smell of animal pee meets you as you walk in the door. There are spider webs everywhere on the tops of shelves, on tops of boxes of product you might contemplate buying. Back in the rodent area, he has mating pairs of rats with their newborns in small 10-15 gallon tanks. If you know anything about rats, they need room...room to climb. There is nowhere for these animals to go. It smells and many of the tanks' glass are filthy, like they haven't been cleaned for months. It's the same for their reptiles as well. He has parakeets in these tiny cages where they have barely any room to go. I would guess this place is fine to buy pet supplies, but from what I saw today, I would never buy an animal there. In my opinion, you are looking to buy an unhealthy animal. His staff told me I could fit 2 rats in the one small cage they offered. If you go on any rat forum, they will tell you there would be no way to keep 2 animals in a cage that small. Makes me question much of the knowledge they have. I think I will keep my money and shop elsewhere. Very disappointed today. read more
