The food…read morewas good, my mother made some very nice friends during her stay there, and there were plenty of activities for the residents and their families. We were grateful that there was a unit available large enough for two people so we were able to keep my parents together per their wishes. The bad: We had problems with housekeeping, laundry, billing practices, and obtaining my parents' records upon leaving the facility. Some things were discussed with us during the contract signing (such as a rate guarantee special that was being offered at the time) that we had to insist on getting in writing before we would sign. Also, the Brookdale agent said things such as, "Oh, I don't know why our contract still says that. We need to have that changed" or "Don't worry about that part". It was quite unnerving to be asked to sign contracts involving many thousands of dollars per month under those conditions. The most troublesome issues for our family at Brookdale Northville had to do with medical care. My parents' long-time physician was on a leave of absence when they moved in, so we made the difficult decision to contract with Brookdale for health care. We paid extra each month (in addition to what Medicare and secondary insurance were billed) for the services of Dr. Frank Winters and for the Brookdale healthcare team, and things overall did not go well. During my parents' residency at Brookdale we experienced failure of the care team to properly follow doctor's written orders; medication administration, ordering, and billing issues; inaccurate record-keeping; and frequent communication difficulties regarding medications, illnesses, treatments, test results, outside referrals, etc. The ugly: Each of my parents left Brookdale Northville under dire medical circumstances, via ambulance, at our family's insistence. Our family repeatedly expressed concerns to Dr. Winters and to the medical staff that my father was getting weaker, continued to have atrial fibrillation and anemia, that his breathing sometimes sounded raspy, and that he complained of increased fatigue and trouble breathing. We made multiple requests for the doctor to check on his lungs. We were repeatedly reassured by Dr. Winters directly or through healthcare staff - even up until just a few days before my father landed in the ER - that his lungs were fine. This was also after several inquiries by various family members over the prior months about sending our father to the hospital due to his increasing weakness and other symptoms. We were repeatedly told that his problems could be handled "as an outpatient" and that he wasn't sick enough to be admitted to the hospital. My father ultimately became so weak that he couldn't stand, and our family instructed for an ambulance to be called. He was quickly diagnosed with a collapsed lung in the ER, and he died after several days in the hospital. My mother had a sudden and erratic decline in her mental and physical condition, which turned out to be due to a urinary tract infection and hyponatremia (very low sodium levels in the blood). This was not recognized or pursued by Dr. Winters and the care team despite apparent classic symptoms, concerns expressed by family members about our mother's significant change in mental status, her recent hospitalization for low sodium, and multiple falls over several days due to extreme weakness. Dr. Winters wrote in a visit report three days prior to her being rushed to the ER that urinary tract infection was a possibility, but he failed to follow through on ordering any lab tests to rule it out or to treat it. In his summary, he actually wrote that my mother's erratic behavior was likely due to dementia (she did not have a prior diagnosis of dementia). In retrospect, we wish we had known about services such as GoDocsGo, which offer in-home (or in- facility) health care. Please see separate review for Novi Lakes.

The nursing staff is excellent and takes great care of all the residence. During Covid-19, the protocols they put in place to protect the residence were creative and met all state guidelines. They went above and beyond to schedule ZOOM meetings so that families could still visit with their loved ones. My Mom, at 96, has thrived since moving in and loves it and all it caregivers. The Management Team does everything in their power to make sure their lives are filled with fun, love and companionship.

Rodica and her staff are absolutely amazing and HANDS ON. Erica, one of the staff, really took such good care of my dad and my brother and I slept better at night knowing this. It was actually less expensive to move here! All our meals are provided as well as weekly housekeeping. The staff are very professional and friendly. We have made many new friends here. The meals are good with lots of variety plus there is a pantry where you can stop by and get a snack 24/7. You also have a full size kitchen if you wish to cook. Plus a full size washer and dryer! The seated shower is the perfect size. There are lots of activities to choose from, onsite as well as offsite. They offer transportation within a 10 mile radius. There is a pharmacy and hair salon on site, plus a fitness center. Our doctor's offices are right across the street, Kroger is within walking distance. There is a waiting list so don't wait too long to come for a visit.
