A number of months ago, I broke an upper front tooth. I quickly went to my dentist who said that because I broke the tooth off at the gum line, I would have to have an implant before a new tooth can be attached. I was informed that the existing root would have to be removed before the metal post could be inserted. My dentist recommended Dr. Adel Talfilis in Carmel Valley for the extraction. Because of my travel schedule, I did not have the time to interview a number of specialists, rather I went with my dentist's recommendation. Dr. Talfilis recommended general anesthesia for the procedure. Soon after the surgery I noticed I was bleeding from not only the site of the extraction but also from the adjacent front tooth. Upon closer inspection, I realized that the adjacent tooth was a little loose and twisted (torqued) during the surgery. Dr. Talfilis downplayed any issue and said the pain would subside, and the tooth should be pushed back in line with gum pressure. Needless to say, he was not correct. My own dentist was very surprised that the adjacent tooth was damaged by the extraction. After a very painful week following the surgery, my general dentist bonded the tooth to one of my canine teeth to reduce movement. Now, 5 months later, the tooth adjacent to the surgical site is still painful and uncomfortable. I anticipate that that this damaged tooth may require a root canal, which was directly caused by Dr. Talfilis surgical work. Do your homework before selecting a dental specialist. read more

This review is long overdue. When I was a teenager I suffered a bicycle accident that radically changed my jaw and teeth allignment. Fast forward several years later and after several attempts to find the right orthodontist and oral surgeon, in addition to having the insurance to approve and pay for these procedures, I decided to have braces and oral surgery. This process started in 2019. After about a year and a half of braces, I was referred to Dr. Tafilis by my primary care physician. Dr. Tafilis was fair, upfront, and explored all the risks with my procedures. He first performed an upper jaw surgery expanding my upper jaw to align my lower jaw. There were no complications with this surgery. After another 3 years of braces, it was time to complete my double jaw surgery in the summer of 2024. The surgery went smooth however unfortunately there were some issues with my jaw post surgery. This risk was accepted as my case was usually challenging as I had a prior surgery in my youth. What was suppose to be only a month of having my jaw wired turned into almost 5 months. For privacy reasons I will not go into details, however, I will say Dr. Tafilis did not give up and saw to that my care was not complete until the issues from my surgery were corrected. He provided me with his personal cell phone number, checked in on me regularly, by text or phone. On Thanksgiving of 2024, I finally ate my first solid food meal and in Jan of 2025 I got my braces off. I can't Thank Dr. Tafilis and his staff enough for the life changing benefits that his procedures have provided me. After years of not being able to confidently smile, chew my food correctly, and have breathing difficulties, I am so great full for him and his team. I would recommend Dr. Tafilis to anyone considering corrective jaw surgery. read more

Apparently, this is perfectly acceptable to Dr. Tawfilis. I hope he treats his own patients with more observation, dedication and care. read more

Since I was 20, I have made it to 4 consultations and never felt that the Surgeon was experienced, confident or practical enough to have it done. Veronica answered the phone on my first call and she could not have been more helpful or insightful. Typically you get some fake sounding administrator that only wants to first know if your insurance is accepted, then if yes, they push you to come in. Veronica gave me some references for Dr. Tawfilis even after I told her I did not have the insurance they accepted. I checked those references and one of the Orthodontists she recommended ( Dr. Randolph Alexander ) I am so happily using today! Veronica - thank you. I recently had 4 wisdom teeth removed, two being impacted. I was not scared at all, but was nervous for the healing since all my friends told me their horror stories and i am a huge chicken lol. The procedure was fast and i went home and went straight to sleep! I didn't have much swelling at all, only one side and that was not really noticeable. There was no pain in my mouth at all for the week following, only headaches which the pain pills took away instantly. I am healing great and honestly felt like I had such a wonderful experience the whole way through! I honestly could do it again lol it was surprisingly a great experience from beginning to end and i am glad I got it over with, and that I came to Dr. Tawfilis. This is long, but well deserved: I came to Dr. Tawfilis after a botched surgery that needed repair for a bilateral TMJ fracture/replacement, and accompanied mandibular advancement. I worked for a large healthcare company and had access to the best of the best from whom to get decent recommendations for an orthognastic surgeon. I continued to mention his name in passing to various doctors in all kinds of specialties with whom I worked, and invariably everyone knew of him and confirmed that he is the best in the business. Dr. T. went over my extensive history with the injury and gave me all of my options and recommendations. He was able to spot and explain the problem at my very first visit. Because his treatment included orthodontia, he referred me to an amazing office that also took great care of me. He was very diligent in keeping in contact with them throughout my treatment there. Once it came time for his part of the final process, he was amazing. Any glitches that arose were of my own doing because I'm an impatient healer, always trying too hard to speed up my recovery. Nevertheless, he was always so kind in adjusting treatment accordingly without frustration or chastisement. Even though my treatment with him ended 6+ months ago he has always been so patient to continue to answer any questions or concerns I send his way. Even at the hospital the nursing staff commented that, "He's far too nice to be a surgeon", and "a real pleasure to work with." His office staff is flawless. The manager was always on top of everything in a timely manner, which is all but unheard of in healthcare. The sweet ladies at the front are so kind and even if I had to wait they made it fun and always made me feel like I was the most important person in the room. I have since moved out of state, but if I ever needed any treatment in the future I would fly back without question, as he is the only surgeon I trust to work on my jaw. I had 4 of my wisdom teeth removed yesterday morning and the staff is amazing! Diane (I think is her name) was in the room with the dr & assistant while they were getting me prepped and she was there to hold my hand when I started to get really nervous. I really appreciated her doing that! All the other ladies that were at the front desk and getting me ready were so nice & helped keep me calm. In June of 2015 my husband had a tooth extracted in preparation for an implant by Dr. Tawfilis. It was very painful that day, but we expected that. However it continued to be extremely painful for the next two weeks, and still hurt after one month. My husband could barely talk. Normally he has a pretty high tolerance for pain. We called Dr. Tawfilis and told him that the mild pain medication he prescribed wasn't working and we wondered if something was wrong. We couldn't understand why it was still hurting, swollen, etc. He told us to come back. My husband did; I still had to drive because my husband felt sick. Dr. Tawfilis was unsympathetic, unapologetic for this happening. He really didn't seem to care. He prescribed a stronger pain med., antibiotics and a mouth rinse. We never went back to complete the process for the post and implant! He was a referral from our nice, regular dentist, but no thank you! Not our kind of provider. We don't have insurance so we can go elsewhere. read more

I was referred to Dr. Tawfilis for a TMJ surgical consult. His office staff is really kind, helpful, and efficient. There was a snafu between my referring doctor and their office as the faxes were not being received. I had to go back and forth a few times to make sure my paperwork was received and each time I spoke with them they were very empathetic to my frustration. I finally met with Dr. Tawfilis today and even though it turns out that I'm not a surgical candidate I felt that the exam was thorough, he really listened to me, and he seemed to truly care. I had a great experience and would highly recommend this office based on the attentiveness and thoroughness by him. While I cannot attest to his actual skill he seemed competent and knowledgeable and had credibility by the fact that he told me to go for the more conservative options. From my experience, Dr. Tawfilis is a precise, honest and straightforward guy. He was very upfront and clear with me about what is involved with wisdom tooth extraction and was always very courteous. When it came time to actually get my teeth pulled, everything went pretty smoothly. I arrived about 15 minutes before my appointment time and was taken back into an operating room right on time. The wait after that, however, was longer than I expected and more than I was comfortable with (in addition to the arctic temperatures in the office), hence the drop to 4 stars. About an hour and 20 minutes later the doctor finally came in and started the procedure. I know it's tough lining patients up and there will always be events out of the ordinary that lead to unexpected delays, but I base my rating off of my specific experience nonetheless. The nitrous oxide knocked me out in a matter of seconds and I woke up with a mouth full of gauze (and four fewer teeth). The staff there was also very helpful and courteous, including generously wheeling me out to the car in my drug-induced stupor. I would definitely recommend Dr. Tawfilis to anyone requiring his services, as his skill and personality seemed uniquely high quality compared with some other oral surgeons in the area. read more

In the past twelve months, I've visited his office for a tooth extraction and implant (a process that took several months) and wisdom teeth extraction. I was referred to him by both my regular dentist and my endodontist. Dr. Tawfilis and his staff were always friendly and welcoming and did a fantastic job of informing me about what to expect of the procedures and the costs of each stage of my treatment. This is so weird reading these reviews of Dr. Tawfilis. I was a patient about 5 years ago with an extraction that I was terrified to get done. Just to keep this short, everything was wonderful. This doctor is incredible. No pain first of all and I'm the biggest baby of them all. The staff was wonderful from beginning to end. He's truely wonderful, caring, gentle and his bedside manner is great too. So now my son needs his wisdom teeth pulled and the first one I knew to call is Dr. Tawfilis. I acually have referred him to whoever else since my experience. I know my son will be fine. I'm not worried at all. So strange reading the negative reviews because it just sounds wrong. Its hard to please everyone I guess. I am a nurse as well and have high standards also, but its strange to see the different reviews. So just wanted to give my 2 cents. Its too bad that there are only 5 stars. Id give them 10. Dr Tawfilis and his staff are amazing. I actually had an ameloblastoma (big tumor) that took over the entire right side of my lower right jaw. My jaw needed to be replaced with my hipbone and cadivular bone along with a titanium plate to reinforce the stability of the jaw. Mind you, this isnt an easy surgery at all. The doctor was able to make a clean cut of the tumor,which was over 6 inches long and about 4 wide. It was like a monster that is taking over my face and he was able to rid of such a beast. He did an excellent job in glueing me back together again. He definitely is a talented maxillofacial surgeon. You should check out my stitches. They are beautifully done to where the scarring will not only is hidden but minimal. Now for the staff. They always welcome you to their office and act like they have known you forever. They are very caring when it comes to your concerns and treat you like family. The staff definitely exceeds above and beyond any of my expectations when it comes to service. They are willing to explain what is covered by the insurance. Any concerns as far as paperwork goes, dont fret. The staff is to the rescue and what they are doing. I will need some dental work after I finish healing after this surgery. Judging by the excellent work on what is a major surgery, I definitely will have all my dental work done here without a question of doubt. read more

I wish I could provide a good review, but my experience with Dr. Tawfilis was the worst experience I have ever encountered with a medical/dental professional. I was seeking a consultation for a bone augmentation surgery to prepare my upper ridge for implants. Dr. Tawfilis was one of only three oral surgeons covered by Blue Cross in the San Diego area. I chose Dr. Tawfilis because of the proximity to my residence. Prior to my appointment I spent a significant amount of time researching my specific case and providing medical codes to assist Dr. Tawfilis'' staff. When I arrived for the appointment the support staff returned all of my research stating they didn't need it. After I mentioned the time I put into the research they finally took it. Like other yelp reviews, I had to wait over an hour after my scheduled appointment time to be seen. During my my consultation, Dr. Tawfilis he expressed his displeasure with my prior dental work, including seven implants that I recently had on my lower ridge. Dr. Tawfilis wanted to know how much I paid for the previous work. Then, Dr. Tawfilis stated he would not complete the bone augmentation surgery unless he placed the implants too. Finally, I received a 10 minute speech on how he lost money on two previous cases involving Blue Cross, and he needed to make sure he would make money before accepting my case. I spoke with a representative from Blue Cross and was told Dr. Tawfilis signed a contract and agreed to the fee schedules. If he was "losing money" he should have negotiated higher fees. The next business day Dr. Tawfilis called me, and stated he would not accept my case because he wouldn't make any money. I advised him of the agreement he had with Blue Cross, and he said that he still wouldn't do my surgery. I asked Dr. Tawfilis if he could at least submit a pre-authorization request to the insurance company, and he told me he had already spent too much time on my case, and how I should just be grateful he gave me a "courtesy call." I asked for a refund of my co-pay since he refused to even submit a request to my insurance. Again, he told me I didn't understand how much time he has already spent on my case, and how he was losing money. The worst part is I spent two weeks waiting for this appointment, and didn't get any answers that I was seeking. Hopefully my next consultation I will be treated with respect and compassion, and I will get some answers that Dr. Tawfilis couldn't answer. read more

I had one of my molars extracted last week. I was very nervous and having to wait for 1.5 hours didn't help the situation at all. I find this extremely unprofessional and am fed up with doctors who routinely think their time is more valuable than mine...maybe he'd like to pay for the baby sitter I had to hire to make the appointment. My extraction was scheduled at 1:00 PM and I finally saw the doctor at 2:30 and that is NOT OK! I received local anesthetic (my choice due to drug allergies I have) and the procedure was very painful...like pulling teeth. I did not find his technique good at all. It was painful even when he administered the anesthetic! Usually, with my own doctor, I don't even feel the needle going in! Overall, not an experience I wish to repeat! I will be looking for another oral surgeon soon :) read more

The price estimate for an implant seemed high, so I decided to get a second opinion. His office refused to let me pick up my xrays that I had paid for, saying that it belonged to my insurance company, and I had no right to them. They did however email a copy... I've had TMJ pain for a month and a half and finally was given a referral by my primary dentist. In my search for a TMJ specialist/oral surgeon, I was given several names by my insurance company. I was told by each one (four total) that they either weren't taking new patients or weren't TMJ specialists. By the time I called this office, I was at my wits end. I spoke to Sarah on the phone and she was up front that Dr. Tawfilis doesn't do TMJ treatment. She could tell by the tone in my voice I'd had it so I told her my history of trying to find someone. She was extremely helpful and referred me to Dr. Brad Eli in Encinitas and even called ahead to let me know I'd be calling them. Hello, as promised I am now yelping on my son's wisdom teeth extraction experience this past week . I already yelped regarding my daughter's experience . Again, 3 impacted wisdom teeth. Super great staff and right on time . Out in about 20 minutes from beginning to end . I had to call Dr Tawfullis after hours as my son got sick from penicillin . He called me right away on a Friday night and gave me some alternatives that worked . He ended up keeping it down. Plus, they bill your insurance and you pay your copay amount unlike a few other surgeons in town who make you navigate that alone after paying in full. I do not support offices who have that practice.I have been through this myself a few times and both kids experiences were better than mine as a kid. read more

I will probably end up paying for at least one of his kid's college. That's fine, but like I told Dr. Tawfalis it cannot be USC, his alma mater-Big 10 school only! There is also a new staff member. Her name is Selena (?) and she fits right in. Sweet personality, intelligent, engaging young woman. She is a real asset to the office.
