It's a great school for schooling sake, which is all a school needs to be! Campus is beautiful, faculty is friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful (except for dining, they are a touch more rigid). For financial aid, I've always had Sarah help me and she was the absolute best- in and out with all my answers. Yes, sometimes getting in touch with financial aid is difficult, but if you can get there in person, all is well. For academics, staff is knowledge and friendly. They encourage growth and questions. They don't belittle you or make you feel stupid or small, which is something I experienced at another university before transferring here. Class sizes are smaller so there is more individualized attention and discussion, which is proven beneficial for learning. You're more than just a student in the classroom, the professor's actually care and teach and learn your names. Food is good, it's made fresh. I would appreciate a bit more variety in the daily dishes, but still better than frozen/cold food. Campus life- you're either in it or you're not, and that's entirely up to you! Yes it is predominantly a commuter school, but there's still plenty of activity and involvement on campus! Whether you're just there for a few classes and want to join a club, or if you want a full schedule of academics and extracurriculars, it is entirely in your control. There's tons of options. Campus also has events such as free ice cream truck, food trucks, tons of raffles and giveaways, bouncy houses, etc. Campus is also pretty diverse, not just in its community but in flora and fauna too. Tons of adorable little bunnies hopping around too! Campus pride is also huge! I say this as a commuter student who transferred here from another school, I'm much happier here and doing so much better academically! I definitely enjoyed my experience. **The review is for the University Center My third time to be in the university ground and first time to be in the Ruth S Harley University Center. I came in on night of March 16th and attended the university's Breast Cancer Awareness Support Program "Creative Cups" fund raising campaign. It was nice to hear of the university's support for such kind of program. A lot of people are benefitting for the proceeds that they were raising. I believe this was just one of the few of their projects for the year. Check their website for further details. I had a good time by the way with the event. Hopefully they had a good turn out. The university center is not hard to find. After making a right turn at the university's main compound entrance, the center is at the right hand side, steps away from the parking lot. The center is a three floor with an underground building comprises mostly of small meeting rooms and main conference hall on the second floor, not sure if the third floor has one too as they held the event on the second floor. Each floor has its own restrooms. The ground lobby has a welcoming vibes. There is a choice of using the stairs or an elevator going up or down. The kitchen is at the second floor as I remember them bringing in and out the refreshments for the evening. I have seen a sign of a bookstore located downstairs, never get the chance to check though. The focal point of the building are the different flags raised up in the center of the building. The entire staff that were involved with the event were nice, friendly and entertaining. Its a good place for any event, wonder if they rent the place for outsiders. read more

Well my daughter that attends is writing an essay "how to survive a shi-tty college". That pretty much sums it up. Happily she is transferring out at the end of the semester. Between the rude drivers that barrel through the parking lot at breakneck speed, to the bedbug infested dorm that as far as we know STILL has not been sprayed two weeks post discovery. Not to mention the food that has made her sick including two raw omelets served in just the last week alone. The academics are weak being the final nail in the coffin. I took my daughter to a portfolio review. Even though we were running late one of the students we ran onto escorted us to the building where the introduction and the review process were taking place. It just so happened the student we ran into knew my older daughter's best friend and she was very informative about the school, like an insiders review. It was very refreshing. Once we arrived at the building where the reviews were taking place we had a friendly greeting and they informed us of the process. They had lunch and snacks for us but we had already eaten. We sat through the introduction and then my daughter's portfolio was reviewed. Everyone we met were very friendly and efficient. They told her it was very good and she would be a good fit for their program. We received good vibes from the school and it's only 2 miles from where we live. Seems to be a good fit. Okay so lemme pop my former Universities cherry here! I honestly feel a little guilty being so stingy with the stars here especially since it is it's only review. So allow me to explain. If you are not sure if you are suited for this school...you probably aren't, since it definitely takes a certain kind of person to blend in with the Adelphi crowd, and I honestly don't think I was one of them. As far as the Professors most of them where complete whack jobs who are socially retarded and don't know what it means to be a young adult in college but just like to hear the sound of their own voice me thinks. Don't get me wrong I absolutely loved at least one of them (Prof. Annette Nowak) Also if you are going to live on campus you are completely FUCKED, yea I said it. Because the food catered by Lackmam has to be some of the worst things they could possibly offer college students, honestly its disgusting. Also the Lackman is known for having numerous complaints about how sanitary the environment they prepare the food in is. The campus is beautiful but the education is lackluster, and certainly not worth the money. I transferred in with a 4.0 gpa and have still received very little attention from my professors and administrators. Most of the professors are rude, don't answer their emails, and act like they don't want to be there. Most of all, the student body is of a certain type (read: rich), and the professors treat everyone as if they are privileged. Obviously, not all of us were born with silver spoons dangling out of our precious little mouths. Some of us can't afford to take off work every weekend for events. We can't all afford to meet up with our professors outside of class. This is absolutely not a place for people who are trying to make it on their own. So, unless you have 120,000 dollars just sitting around, and your heart's desire is a mediocre education, avoid Adelphi and go somewhere that's willing to invest in its students. read more

I was never going to write this, til I stumbled upon this page & decided to read the reviews. I can't believe someone who had the exact same experience as me with this department at Adelphi. After seeing I wasn't the only one this happened to, I decided I have to share my experience as well to prevent this from happening to other students or potential students. After sending an extremely respectful email to the assistant dean of Nursing about a class I was taking (I was directed by my professor to get in contact with her. Deborah was her name as per my emails), I got no response. After another email following up, I still got no response. A few days later I decided I would go to her office to try to set up an appointment in person. I was greeted by someone at the front desk who told me I could not make an appointment, but that she would leave my name because she wasn't in. Left my name, waited 2 weeks, and still nothing. Keep in mind college semesters are only 3 months long and it has already been almost a month of back & forth at this point. At this point, I decided to email again. STILL no response after another whole week. At this point I didn't know what to do. I talked to my professors who agreed I had to be more firm about needing to meet with her, as it was clear nothing was going to get done with my kind emails I had been sending for over a month. I sent my last email, still respectful, but more firm email stating I have been trying to get in contact her for over a month. I explained my questions were time sensitive and the semester was about to end meanwhile I've been trying to get in contact with her every possible way since midterms were happening. Lo & behold, after that last email, I got a response within 24 hours to set up a meeting. I was so happy that I would finally get answers to my questions. I went to the appointment in a good mood, and even apologized the second I saw her saying I'm sorry for the back & forth, I was just worried that I was never going to get a chance to meet with you before the semester ended. When she walked me into her office, there was my advisor sitting there. I was a little confused because she didn't tell me she would be there, and the problem had nothing to do with her, but I figured maybe she has advisors there for every meeting she does with a student so there is no confusion. I greeted them both so nicely, joked with my advisor that it was nice to finally see her face in person (I had never met her but had emailed with her earlier in the semester to switch a class) and I was given the most cold response. The second I sat down I had a weird feeling, I've never encountered such unpleasant people especially after I was so kind to them. Before I could even get a word in, Deborah pulled out PRINTED copies of my emails. She began berating me asking if I thought these emails were okay in any way, and my heart sank. I tried explaining that I didn't know how else to get in contact with her, but I literally could not even get a word in. They were beyond nasty and mean, I could not even believe it. I've never in my entire life been spoken to this way. It was SO unwarranted, I respect any and every adult and I made it clear that my intentions are never to disrespect anyone. Honestly, both of these woman should have lost their jobs on the spot. To this day, I wish I had taken out my phone & started recording (This experience made me start recording majority of my encounters). I never said anything in the office because they gaslit me & teamed up on me so bad that I actually started to believe I was in the wrong for sending 3 emails. I left the office in tears and no longer a nursing major after she told me there was no place in nursing for disrespect (She was literally not disrespected by me a single time ever). I cannot believe a couple years later I stumbled upon someone who had the exact same experience with her. I really wonder how many more people she has done this to. I also think she's a bit confused, as we were the ones paying 40k+ tuition a year, not her. Her job is also to address student concerns yet she can't handle simple questions. I just looked it up, and somehow she is still the assistant dean of Nursing. That leads me to say if you are a potential student, go somewhere else. Go somewhere they won't belittle you for asking questions. You're paying SO much money and the entire point of college is to question & learn. I have friends who went to Molloy and had a totally different experience. Word of advice to this woman, if you have more than one student leaving your office in tears maybe it's time to reevaluate your own attitude. How ironic. If anyone is going through this at Adelphi, don't let this discourage you! Go somewhere they will give you the time & effort you deserve for the $ you're paying. You know the saying," The quicker you build a house, the faster it falls" kinda explains my acceptance into Adelphi University. They accepted me so fast, it was unbelievable. Very shady. and of course, they accepted me as a provisional student. If you ever get accepted as provisional at Adelphi, do not fall for it. They will kick you out of the program, thats their plan. You apparently need two Bs to pass, however, their website claims you need a b in both classes or a 3.25 average for 12 credits. They mustve forgot they had that on their website. Godforbid you get a b- in one class and an A in the other which would equal 3.2 . They wont even consider the other class, wont even weigh the difference. I was just told there was nothing that could be done. The head of the Social Work department hung up the phone on me after being unable to answer my question,let alone, get to know the student. The Social Work department is a complete joke. If youre provisional, they wont even give you the same rights as a "regular" student despite paying the same for the classes. I definitely lost hope in this field. They were so quick to kick me out without blinking an eye. I was cheerful and merry with the department one day and shunned the next. But as they say, as one door closes, another flies the f open. Dont waste your money here. read more

Graduate school review from an MSW student- I am so unbelievably disappointed in my experience at Adelphi. I attended for my graduate studies obtaining 2 masters and just graduated last week. As someone who lives in the area, I've always thought highly of Adelphi, loved the pristine campus, and have had several family members attend (although they attended quite a while ago) and work there who spoke well of their experience. I'm so sad that that wasn't the case for me. As a commuter, I cannot speak to the living conditions, residential staff, or cafeteria food, so scroll on if you need that info. Altogether, the campus itself was lovely and well-maintained. I saw quite a bit of school spirit and loved some of the health/fitness programs offered in addition to extracurriculars. However, Adelphi really only went out of their way for the undergrads. Countless times I went to events or food trucks set out for the commuter students, but they would only serve the undergrads. I also appreciated the well rounded focus in terms of arts, sports, and sciences. But the GC campus itself certainly wasn't very diverse. Financial Aid was awful. No one could ever give me a straight answer, and I was always told "that's not on our end, go to ___" but then the other person/department would say the same thing. You would also think they had a better process for attending to those visiting the office, considering there was always a line out the door and very limited privacy. Public Saftey- the officers always seemed nice, but one situation I had was in getting a parking ticket that I had every right to appeal. They had said on their website that they weren't issuing tickets until a specific date in September. I still got one, was told to appeal it, and then, even though I printed screenshots of the misleading information on the website and proof that I had my car sticker even though it wasn't on my car, they denied it. Once denied, I was told that I was not allowed to appeal it any further. Now I'll speak to my program experience. Let me preface this by saying that I am still incredibly grateful for my experience. I will not deny that, nor do I regret it... I was fortunate enough to access a very unique opportunity in attending a new program offered on campus that would allow me to get an additional degree to my MSW in a specialized field; the Master's of Science in Infant Mental Health and Developmental Practice Program. That was by far my favorite experience. It was new and only around for the duration of the grant. Like any new program it certainly had its flaws, but I could not have been luckier to get the education I got through that experience in such a niche field. As for the MSW program following it, it was a much different experience. Through both programs, I was fortunate in the friendships and connections I made. I got to meet some incredible people who made my classes worthwile. The MSW professors were a mixed bag, but for the most part I enjoyed them. Professors like Dr. Vanidestine, Dr. Cameron Kelly, and Dr. Palley truly challenged and supported us. Some, however, gave no feedback on assignments, taught poorly, were unclear on their expectations, or overstepped several boundaries with their students. When complaints were brought forth to the administration, they were knocked down or ignored. The MSW program requires you to participate in Social Action Day, which is done in a disorganized way each year. The administration was either never on the same page with each other or never on the same page with the students. Decisions were often made with hardly any regard to it's student. They made it clear that they did not value our opinions and were way less empathetic than you'd expect a social help field to be. The program claims to be flexible, especially for those with families and/or working jobs, but this is so wildly incorrect. The School of SW wanted to make us ALL pay the same price for a new software called Tevera, even if we'd be graduating shortly. Even getting field placements was difficult! One faculty tried pushing me away from my passions & ignored my contact attemtps for 4 months. Lastly, COVID-19 was hard on everyone, so I didn't expect perfection from Adelphi, but there wasn't even an online graduation ceremony, after I had spent THREE years of time, work, and money. They also did very little to help us in figuring out next steps in our career. The Licensing exam class was a joke and we were given no genuinely helpful information on sitting for our exam, not even a timeline on what to expect. They get defensive when we ask questions and continue their pattern of disorganization and disconnect. I always was outspoken, diplomatic, and provided feedback. But I sit here now, jobless during COVID-19, and in an insane amount of debt to them as the career center ignores my pleas and the SSW administration is hardly helpful or responsive. Before I got to Adelphi I read the Yelp reviews and was appalled to see such bad reviews of a "Top class" university in New York. I am currently staying here for five days. Today is my second day, and the breakfast was so dismal that I had to write a review. As soon as you walk into "para hall" you will immediately notice the small size of the breakfast hall. I've never seen such a small university sized breakfast hall. To add on, some of the food served is raw, I mean no hesitation when I say "raw." The selection of breakfast items was trays with pancakes, French toast, sausages, exc. The tray of sausages had some sausages that were burnt badly and some that looked as if the pig had just been killed. They were grey, and tasted raw. The taste is disgusting and not at all what a cooked sausage should taste like. There were two trays of pancakes and one of them had pancakes that were not cooked at all, just the batter in pancake form but it was not cooked. Why would they even put this tray out next to the food is beyond me. The actually cooked pancakes was the only somewhat good tasting thing I had here. The French toast is completely tasteless and lackluster. It is dry and even with syrup it does not taste good. I was picking at the cooked pancakes tray trying to see which ones are actually cooked well and one of the chef behind the counter say me and gave me a dirty look. Which bothered me because he is in essence saying I should just eat raw food because he is too lazy to cook it properly. Which is not just considering the program I am here with is not free. The food selection is very small, one of the smallest food selections I have ever seen at a university and I have been to a dozen. The fruit bar had watermelon, pineapple, cantaloupe, exc. which all still had the skin on it! I mean how lazy do you have to be to not cut the skin of the fruit off before you serve it. The cups are unsanitary since they are just stacked up with water still in the cups. The least you can do is dry the cups properly before putting them out for use. The tongs for cookies and other sweets are just left on the countertops, not even given a plate to rest on. What kind of food hall is this! Lastly there is only one omelet station with one chef, the line was extremely long at that station because of this. It also just goes to show how small of a place this is. The food was disappointing and bleak. I did not have a well balanced breakfast at all. The only thing saving this place from a one star is te decent decor and aesthetic of the hall. I am not a fan of writing reviews but I have had such negative experiences at Adelphi that I felt the need to post. I am a sophomore nursing student currently at Adelphi, over the summer Adelphi has had a scandal with a nursing professor that has faked her license and the school was never aware until she was finally caught. At the beginning of the school year, another professor in the biology department (also a professor for pre-req nursing courses) was fired for a scandal that occurred at another school. He offered a student to sleep with him for good grades, he was also known to be very sexist. The staff and advisors in the nursing department are absolutely rude, condescending and clueless. A lot of the nursing deans think they are above everyone because they are RNs or have their PhD. Out of the blue, they decided to change the color of the nursing uniform and also took out the women's options for the top and pants (the color is now white and brown pants- DISGUSTING). I emailed staff from the nursing department and asked if there was anything we could do to have a say in the change of colors, the uniform is quite pricey (about $90). After sending several emails with no definitive response, I received an email from the assistant dean's assistant scheduling a mandatory meeting with me. To my surprise, I am greeted with attitude and am reprimanded for sending emails. As a student paying thousands of dollars, I will utilize all resources given to me and will express any concerns or issues I have, this school isn't FREE and it most certainly is NOT cheap!!! During my meeting with the assistant dean, she told me she finds it concerning that I didn't think it was inappropriate to send a chain of emails to the deans and president about a uniform. She belittled me the whole meeting and shut me down with any comment I had, I left the meeting in tears because of how I was treated. If anything was concerning it was the way the assistant dean had treated me, the meeting was entirely unnecessary, I was being scolded for complaining about an unhelpful advisor and clinical placement office. I was completely shocked that I was in trouble for sending emails and voicing my opinion, I pay money for this school I will contact whoever I want!!! I was told basically my emails were a waste of time and that she did me such a big favor by switching my advisor. Another thing is the financial aid, the school is extremely expensive and even with a scholarship it is a lot. They charge you late fees for not paying on time, you can't register for classes with a balance above $1,000 I believe, they are very unhelpful when it comes to forms to fill out. I did not know I had to fill out the TAP application my freshman year and only found out until I went to the financial aid office and had the lady look into it for me, they are constantly looking for ways to get money out of you, especially the nursing students. If you are a freshman registering for classes without any college credits, forget about getting into a class you like with a good professor and times that work for you. I had to switch my schedule multiple times as the seats would keep filling up and I was among the last to register. I had also registered for a course that taught CPR and would give me a certification I need to start my clinical training as a nurse. I was not sure beforehand if this course certification would work for my clinical even though many students told me this worked for them. To be on the safe side I contacted my advisor who immediately told me this course would not count, after I explained there is a certification she told me to contact clinical placement and never gave me an email (I asked her for the email because I couldn't find it). I then emailed the deans and asked them if the course would count, they forwarded my email to the clinical placement office where I was also told no. I then called the office and spoke with a very rude lady, I was explaining that cpr was taught in the course and she kept telling me to stop being persistent and asked me if I knew what cpr was. This was extremely rude so I contacted the deans about my frustration with that, they told me that the course will count and I can take it!! (I was later scolded for contacting them in the first place). read more

I graduated from Adelphi in '03 and had a really great experience. I was a commuter student, and as such can't really comment on dorm and food issues. The campus was beautiful when I attended and still is, but with more to offer after renovations in their theater and athletic complex. I double majored in psychology and sociology, so most of my experience was within these departments. I only have wonderful things to say about each department. My professors were passionate, inspirational, engaging and made lasting impressions on me. They were accessible and always happy to do anything to help. I spent some great years at Adelphi and I received an education that I will always value. read more

Cons: the financial aide office will never answer your phone calls or call you back, you can only force them to do their jobs by showing up to talk to faculty face to face. The parking lot is dangerous to walk through because cars are speeding through it to park or leave. The faculty of the graduate social work program are unhelpful, professors are terrible at teaching (which is ironic because teachers who can't teach?!), students who professors don't seem to like one day completely disappear from the program one by one, and worse of all, the professors walk around like they are gods when everyone knows social workers generally make $30,000/year unless they are professors or directors of an agency. These will be your thoughts if you enter the social work program ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? The team in financial aid are horrible, This school is very expensive overall, so i don't understand why the lack of help & information provided for financial aid for freshman students is so vague. The school is completely boring on the weekends. The food selection is horrible. The school is very clique, so if you did not attend HS in a neighboring town most likely you will feel out of place. The obvious plus are the safety of the campus, the beautiful inviting campus, the modernized buildings, the school generally is a well respected school because its a school located in the heart of Long Island NY where you don't have to travel 3-4 hours away from NY to attend an Great University but overall, in my opinion is a great COMMUTERS SCHOOL! read more

Financial aid is a joke. Waited until July to hear about how much money they would offer me and when I did hear, they expected me to come up with close to $30K in payments by August 1st. I'm an independent and I'm paying for college by myself, I also hit deans list at my previous school with a 3.7 GPA, but Adelphi "couldn't help me with scholarships" and thought after me begging for more money that $1K more would help. Way overpriced, I'm not sure how I'd even sustain myself going to this college without working multiple jobs on top of taking classes. This school probably works if you live in close proximity to the campus and are from NY. Other than that, the people I met at Adelphi such as the campus security and admissions team were BEYOND friendly and helpful, couldn't have asked for more, if only the financial aid/tuition/payment process wasn't a pain in the ass and so disheartening that you end up not being able to attend. read more

Adelphi University could be worth the money if they actually make changes that reflect the amount of tuition charged. As a MSW student, I find the program to be a little mediocre with some very mediocre students. My first semester there, I was a part-time evening student and I was a little appalled that I was learning about Rosa Parks in a grad level social welfare class. Like really!!!! The students all seemed to just be older, working students who probably could not get in anywhere else, so Adelphi accepted them. I found that while my Professor was very good, I got the feeling that she too was shocked at how medicore the intellect of the students were. I was almost ashamed to be there. However, over the years my feelings changed. However, I am in my last year and notice so much more to complain about. There are no dual degree programs, no specializations, no concentrations, no real experience at all. No real diversity in its curriculum, terrible classrooms in the social work building. It's just really a waste of my money. On the other hand, I have had some really great professors, a good advisor and the Dean is a doll. However, it just seems like no one is doing anything to make it a stronger program in general. As a struggling single mother, Adelphi has done nothing to help their students who need financial assistance. Instead of proper advisement in financial aid, they wait until there is a balance to contact the student. Then when the student/parent inquires what funds were available, they will review the file & realize the student didn't complete all applications for financial aid. I thought the counselors in financial aid were there to ADVISE students about funds, scholarships etc. I was COMPLETELY wrong. In addition, the prior young lady I feel for you...my daughter is close to graduating this year as opposed to next year (which means Adelphi will lose one year's tuition) and they will not let her register for class. why? because when they let her register for summer classes Adelphi DID NOT advise her that financial didn't cover those two classes. So now there is a balance and no help. They literally told her there is "nothing we can do." There are other issues with the school and at this point I will utilize all my resources to bring this to the attention of other families contemplating Adelphi. read more

I just transferred to Adelphi and so far my classes seem alright. I think this school would be better for commuters. Housing here is a complete joke. They are very controlling for subpar housing. My last school had way better housing and was not as strict. They apparently have hyper sensitive fire alarms for what reason? I have no idea because these rooms don't look extremely nice to be that paranoid. A person can't even do (blow dry/ straighten) his/her hair in his/her room. He/she would have to go to the communal bathroom for that (with doesn't even guarantee the fire alarm not going off.) It's ridiculous for the cost of this place. When attending a floor meeting, it felt as though you were being told everything you can't do. It feels almost as a mistake for me coming here. I don't know if I was just use to better housing at my last school (which felt as you were more at home), but some of these rules are pathetic. If I was a commuter then maybe this review would be better. Personally, I think living comfortably plays an important part in college life. This review may generate a lot of criticism as I am a parent of a student..and colleges know that parents are only good to make tuition payments. Well, my student did well prior to starting college and there was every expectation that that would continue. WRONG. Many professors in the science program, protected by golden tenure simply did not know how to teach and often left huge gaps in knowledge between what was covered in school and what was on the exams. They were clueless when students acheived poor grades. In one class, the average grade going into the home stretch of the course was in the 50's - why does this not turn anyone's head? Why do students have no recourse? I have been told that many students cheat....this goes unnoticed so honest students who fail are vilified and labelled as "lazy". The advisors provide no guidance.My family had several health crises, that contributed to performace but no one was even interested in listening. I thought there would be a supportive atmosphere and that is why I suported my student's choice of this college. But I iterally wasted what could have been a downpayment on a house. read more
