My husband and I did a lot of research before choosing an agency and initially Adoption by Shepard Care seemed really great. That was until we got matched with a birth mother and ultimately had a failed adoption. They treated our failed adoption in the way a realtor would treat a client not having their offer accepted on a new house. It was shocking....that's the best word I can use to describe the behavior of the social workers at this agency. We worked with Terry and Angela and I can't even describe how shocked we were at their lack of clear communication, empathy, or compassion...especially given what we were told when we signed on. They definitely have their sales pitch down. Working with this agency really reminded me that they are in fact a business first. They charge you as the adoptive family $150 per hour that they work with the birth mom and in our case, the "counseling" expenses totaled to $10K in addition to the other expenses. So, it seemed to us, this is a business in which they don't really care too much about the outcome of the placement because they are making money either way. We were told some lies about the birth parents by the agency as well which turned out to be untrue so we aren't sure if that was intentional or just another example of their poor communication. We would not recommend prospective adoptive parents work with this agency. Adoption by Shepherd Care - FAILED ADOPTION - Adoption Services Near Me - Davie, Florida

BEWARE OF THE SNEAKY TACTICS OF THIS AGENCY!! We worked with this agency for a short while before deciding to cut our ties with them earlier this year. First off, they have zero flexibility or consideration for adoptive parents' work schedules. They try to force adoptive parents to attend several meetings/trainings at their office in the middle of the day for hours at a time. They offer no additional option of web/phone meetings at all. If you dare disagree with their way of doing things, they categorize you as someone who won't have time for a placement or a baby, which is ridiculous. Secondly, they speak negatively about their birth mothers. During my individual interview, a previous birth mother was described to me as uneducated and ghetto by our Social Worker. I didn't appreciate this at all since their very existence is because of women deciding to make adoption plans for their babies. If these women knew Adoptions By Shepherd Care spoke about them this way I am sure they wouldn't bother working with them. Lastly, we were charged $1100 for a "homestudy", which was to include you our background checks. However, we were charged an additional $50 to have our backgrounds done by one of their companies. After our Social Worker came to our home to complete her home visit and try to talk us into a fully open adoption of a baby who could possibly be born substance exposed (which would cause no long term issues with the baby according to her), and after ignoring our many comments to her that we were not in favor of paying over $30k for an open adoption or adopting a baby born substance exposed, she ended the visit by leaving us with a document that the agency typed up that amongst other concerning terms, mentioned that the birth mother controls everything regarding terms of visitation with the child after adoption and told us to "stew over it." Once the agency realized that we were not budging, they decided that they would try and make it difficult for us to adopt by telling us our wait time would be over a year. After we advised them that we were no longer interested in working with them and asked for refund on the difference of our home study fee since our home study had not even been typed up and we paid for our own background checks, they told us that they don't issue refunds and kept our money. read more

Stay away! I lost $20,000 using this agency. Worst agency ever, they don't treat adoptive parents with respect, they are very rude, and are horrible communicating. It's heartbreaking but they only want your money. My complaint has been escalated to higher levels. Please do not reach out to them, our community deserves better services. What a blessing to have had Adoption by Shepherd Care on our side during the adoption process. We honestly always felt like we were part of a family, not just a number. The staff was very caring and responsive. We were always well informed and felt that they were genuinely concerned about our family. What an exceptional experience this has been! From start to finish (approximately a year and 7 months from starting homestudy through finalization) for an international adoption, the staff at ASC have been amazing! Choosing to go through with an adoption is not a decision that should be taken lightly and thus choosing the agency is just as important. For us we did extensive research, contacting several agencies and in the end Adoptions by Shepard Care was easily the best fit. Despite all our previous research and adoption knowledge, when we began the process we realized how little we really knew and how much we had up ahead of us. However, with the Adoptions by Shepard Care staff by our side we were never alone and were supported when we felt overwhelmed. Angela Knapp was our support service team member, from the first phone call where I was just trying to get basic information, all the way through to each home study visit and interviews, mountains of paperwork, the phone call that we were matched and then the follow up visits once our son was placed in our home. Angela gently educated, answered questions, guided us through all the intricacies, and then celebrated with us. When the time came for our son to be born it was the holiday season and because of that... it was all hands on deck. It felt like every single team member at both offices knew who we were and were ready to drop everything to meet us at the hospital when it was go time. During the struggles of our hospital stay Terri and Kristine supported us through it. They were available by phone and in person anytime we needed, even if it was for (what we felt may be perceived as) silly questions. One of the biggest reasons we went with Adoptions by Shepard Care was, in addition to loving us and supporting us through the adoption process, they also put a lot of focus, support and prayer towards the Birth mom's. They provide extensive counseling to each birth mom walking through the trenches with them and making sure that they fully understand the magnitude of the choice they are so lovingly making. Adoption by Shepard Care successfully supports all parts of the triad (birth mom and adoptive family particularly and as a result the adoptee) in a way that many other agencies are unable to. Adoption is beautiful, terrifying, exciting and exhilarating experience. It is an amazing union of three worlds which are all incredibly complex, but Adoption by Shepard Care truly supports you through it. We can't be more thankful for the growth we experienced during our adoption journey, for the love and support, but most of all for the amazing gift of our son!
