I stopped by this Advance Auto Parts to pick up motor oil for my car. The oil for my car (VW 502 00 spec) can be hard to find, but most of the auto parts stores like Advance, AutoZone, and O'Reilly stock it. It's full synthetic 5W-40. I prefer Castrol Edge to top off, but have been getting German Liqui Moly at my oil changes over the past several years. I noticed the packaging for Castrol Edge changed recently, within the past 2-3 years, and it now says "Euro Car" and "European Formula" on the front. If you read the fine print on the back of the bottles, you can see the different make specs to confirm you're getting the right oil for your car. The standard price for Castrol Edge 5W-40 hasn't changed much over the years. During my visit to this store, it was still $9.99 per single-quart bottle and $34.99 per five-quart bottle ($7 per quart). I went with the five-quart bottle due to the cost savings. Sometimes, Advance will have sales where it's worth it to me to buy the single-quart bottles, but not this time. If I recall correctly, the sales I've seen are five quarts for $28.99 or $5.80 per quart which is a good deal. I don't look out for the sales so I just have to get lucky during my visits. This time, the deal was a five-quart bottle and a filter for $35.99. It was advertised as a "Full Synthetic Bundle." Mike V checked me out at the register. He asked if I was aware of the above deal which I appreciated. This is Advance Auto Parts store #8459. It's the only Advance Auto Parts in Chapel Hill. It's pretty much like all the other Advance Auto Parts stores I've been to. I will say this particular store is located at a funny intersection and not directly on the main drag (15-501). As others have said, the Chapel Hill location of Advance Auto Parts has fantastic customer service. When I needed a key remote battery changed, they not only changed it for me, but came out to my car to be sure it worked afterward. When I had a low car battery light on, they helped me check both the battery and alternator and did not try to sell me something I did not need (battery and alternator turned out to be fine). It's amazing to me that they not only sell you parts but will help you ensure you get only the right ones *and* will come out to your car to help you. I will also add that during the covid lockdown times, this was the only store where I was treated as a person instead of a contagion. A+! read more

I called Autozone yesterday and they told me they could not help me with fuses as that would be "a liability". Well, I'm here to tell you that Advance DID NOT have a problem helping me; in fact, the nice young man who came out to check out my fuses was probably out there with me for ten or 15 minutes and he didn't make it seem like I was a pain at all. I believe the awesome guy who helped me was George. Advance, you get ALL of my business from now on and I will not ever darken the doors of Autozone and become a liability to them in any way. Great auto parts store. Knowledgeable staff and eager to help. I recently purchased custom seat covers for a 2005 g35 coupe. The quickly showed me the options and gave me their opinion when asked. Even though they were prompt they were also patient. They made decision making easy. Today I purchased wind shield wipers. An enthusiastic SHON greeted me gave me several options - recommending the ones on sale, then quickly found them, and put them on. Today I visited this Advance Auto Parts location needing to replace the battery in my keyless remote. The general manager, Chris Driscoll, was very friendly and helpful. He opened the key remote and replaced the battery for me. I had just visited the Advance Auto Parts in Carrboro and was told by a rude young man that they could not replace the battery for me and I need to check my automobile manuel. What a difference in these two locations, I will definitely return to the Chapel Hill location and avoid the Carrboro location. read more

I started coming here in the last couple weeks after having a couple of frustrating times at another chain auto store, not to be named. The first day I came in was a Sunday, needing a new battery and then a couple of parts lookups. Each time someone helped me it was quick and easy. Santiago produced the 10 mm socket that I needed to remove my battery, like a magician out of thin air, after I got frustrated using my crescent wrench - not the ideal tool! He also suggested checking out youtube for how to change a type of oil filter that I have no prior experience with, and I'm doing that right now! Thanks Santiago. Lori was really quick looking up a part, and there was another young guy whose name I did not catch, who helped pop out the hi-mount brake light bulb when it wouldn't budge for me and I was worried of breaking the plastic housing. Went there again Saturday this week and both guys were there, quick to help check stock for the kind of oil I needed when it was not on the shelves. I appreciate the customer awareness and service, as opposed to the experience at another chain store where they were running an obnoxious loud floor polisher before closing time while people are trying to get help with parts lookup! The people working here are incompetent and rude. I needed to have my battery charged and I also needed to pick up a few things. I made an online order which was not ready when I got there. The guy helping me walked around the store for 20 minutes looking for it. I could've done that myself. I'm not sure what the point of online ordering was. I also asked to have my battery checked and charged bc I needed a jump the night and morning before. The guy wouldn't help me take my battery out so I was unable to have it charged and then told me to go ride around in my car for 30-45 mins. Worst customer service ever. I took my car up the road to auto zone and they have no problem taking my battery out. read more

I had a great experience here today! I went in to buy a new headlight because mine was out. I wasn't sure how to install it myself, so Mauricio came outside with me to help. When the light still didn't come on after being installed, he took it upon himself to find the fuse that needed to be replaced, and then helped me replace it! Went in for what I thought was a quick and simple trip to take advantage of one of their oil change deals (5 qts + filter). Found they only had four quarts of the oil on special in what I needed. So I went to ask them to check their inventory, thinking that worst case, they could sub out a single quart of a comparable style like most stores would. I ended up working with three different people for over twenty minutes and leaving unsatisfied and empty handed. First the new employee couldnt find it in stock, so then a senior employee got on the phone with a store 10 miles away to check inventory there, while I asked him what good that would do me since i was standing in their store? This took a while, and was completely pointless because I wasnt going to wait around for a delivery or drive to another store for a single quart of oil! Next, the manager came over. By now its going on twenty minutes, and she explains to me that they can't sub in a single quart like for like to complete the sale, they wouldnt be able to honor the sale price, and that they could place an order for a single quart for me. Give me a break! How about some common sense and customer satisfaction? A big part of my growing frustration was the length of time it was taking to accomplish a relatively simple transaction. Had they said sorry, and quickly suggested another deal and helped track that down, i would have been happy (enough). Finally I just left, empty handed, suggesting that this was ridiculous and any other store advertising a sale would typically swap out for a similar item, its customer service/retail 101. This is a great store! The staff are extremely helpful and friendly. I bought a new battery at a different store. Although it was less than 2 months old, my car began experiencing lots of difficulty cranking. I took my car in. Chris, the manager, checked the battery and saw that it was so low that he needed to charge it in order to make sure the problem was not due to the alternator. While he charged the battery, I was able to work from the wifi at the McDonald's up the street. When he was finished, he walked up and found me to let me know what was wrong. Ended up that the battery was the issue, so they installed a new one and I was on my way without spending a dime! Strongly recommend this store! read more

The men (and I use that term loosly) that were working the other day that I stopped in to purchase a headlight bulb were Incredibly Rude, did not want to assist me in anyway, and sold me the wrong item. I went there on a Sunday morning right when they opened. I arrived at 8:50, knowing they didn't open until 9, however, the woman who was working didn't open the store until 9:05. Upon walking in, I was not greeted or even acknowledged by the middle aged African American woman working. I approached the counter to ask if someone could look at something on my car and she responded very rudely. She said no, I'm the only one working in a very rude voice tone. She very clearly had no intentions of helping anyone. I've visited this location before and received incredible service, however that was not the case today. This woman's attitude and lack of service earns this store one star. I went back to the store about an hour later and a young(ish) man who they call the doctor helped me. He was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable and earns this store five stars. Unfortunately, due to the unacceptable encounter I had with the woman an hour earlier, this store gets 3 stars. First of all, it is worth saying that Steve, who works there, deserves 5 stars. But everything else about the two times I have been here was absolutely terrible, and for the first time, I wish it were possible to give zero stars. With the exception of Steve, I had a terrible time getting someone to help me find the right bulbs for my brake lights the first time and my high/low beams the second time. Apparently it is company policy that employees are not allowed to help you install even simple purchases on your car. Brake lights are pretty simple, but my car has a particularly odd setup so I spent about twenty minutes fiddling with it, which was not a huge deal, but they weren't particularly busy and eventually it was another customer who offered to help me. On the second occasion, I went into Advance because I was unsuccessful on my own in removing the bad headlight bulbs. Steve kindly went out of his way to help me find the right bulbs and to help me replace them. As it turns out, my car has particularly complex headlight fixtures and he graciously spent about 45 minutes helping me (which is how long it took given the complex set up), during which his manager came out to hover over him and to subtly scolded him twice. After spending $70 in bulbs, I really would have expected better customer service from the management. After helping me a little longer, I completely understood that Steve had to return inside and I had to try to figure out the rest of the headlight installation myself. Though they were not busy in the store at all, I stood out in the parking lot alone for more than an hour in notable heat fiddling with the headlight and not once did the manager (who must have known I was still out there) or any other staff offer to help me. I spent $70 and two hours of my life on what should have been the reasonably simple task of replacing my headlights. Until they offer better customer service at the management level, I will definitely not be giving them my business. read more
