It can get slippery in places due to the rocks and dry dust everywhere so wear good shoes. (June 2026) The views are nice at the top. You're able to walk all around the base of the rock and see birds that live there fly in and out of the little spaces and crevices. There is signage explaining the history of how this trail came to be, as well as a picnic area. There are two trails, I chose the John Emerson summit trail.

It's a short but challenging climb with about 140 steps and rewarding, beautiful views overlooking the reservoir and surrounding hills. A great spot if you want a mini incline experience without driving to Manitou Springs. Plenty of free parking. Restrooms are portable potties. Dogs need to be leased when on the trail. Signs said no dogs on the actual incline itself.

This park is easily accessible by car with a large parking lot with seasonal restrooms or by walking or biking the Cherry Creek Trail. Great fun for all ages.

That's great for bikers and runners. If that's not your jam, rent paddle boards to get out on the water. Better yet, taking it easy sitting on the sandy beach to take in the sun and weather.

My recent walk with my pup allowed us a peaceful day and we spotted a hawk, many (very many!) gulls and even a Pronghorn family. Nature is beautiful here at the res. Once again, the restrooms and children's play area are undergoing a few minor improvements. While these areas are closed, the rest of the park is open. Note that the parks pass does not allow entry to the reservoir. Visitors can purchase day passes, paying by check, credit card or Apple Pay are accepted.

However, one star removed for the dangerous bikers who need to be more careful and less aggressive in their speeds. I come from a beach area with PED lanes and bike only lanes . And Bikers were highly encouraged to know better ! I always biked with regards to speeds and safety of walkers. Every biker that was on the same shared path at this trail zoomed at top speeds without disregard to walkers. I constantly checked behind me but some corners don't let you see what is that far away. Bikers who clearly see in front of them , need to slow down! I can only imagine the accidents to those who have earphones in. The trail is 9 miles , I only did one mile up and back. I had come to make videos for one of my many young Godsons to show the actions and speed of a requested RC car. There was a gravel flat area near the picnic benches perfect to do so. So I drove over the other day and parked in a little parking lot across from the 24 Hour Fitness and got to walking and running. This loops up with the Cherry Creek Trail and there were people walking, cycling, hanging out with their dogs and such. There isn't a lot of shade so bring a hat and some SPF if you're going to be out for awhile. I ran for about four miles but look forward to coming back here again when the weather is consistently nice and exploring some more!

On the back side I have checked out some of the canyon and was shocked to even see there is a canyon there since you would have no idea from the road. This open space is full of things I wouldn't expect to see at the edge of the plains. The hikes, however, are pretty short (maybe 3 miles if you do the longest loop and explore a little) and the one path brings you back along a service road with farms nearby. The mesa top isn't the most exciting, but there are usually a bunch of prairie dogs chirping.

It's all sunny so it's a great winter weather trail to be out in the chill but be warmed by the sun rays. It's great in the spring time due to the abundance of wildflowers. I am not sure why other reviews mention quads and horses. I have never seen either. Not bikes. This is not that type of trail. I see some people walking their puppies sometimes...which off course make for some "land mines" on the edge of the trail, but that seems to be a problem on ALL TRAILS here in CO. People are just selfish and rude. No way around that. But this trail is awesome. Exceptional views and such varied geological interesting terrain.
