Just starting out on the first ride.
    Lora W.

We met Jennifer in town and made arrangements to go out to Winterberry Way a few days later. Jennifer has a few ponies for riding, bunnies for petting, chickens for chasing and hunting for their eggs. It was perfect for my city-slicker kiddos looking for a slice of the country life! After some introductions and basic safety information, Jennifer had our 3 daughters up and going on the horses quickly and adjusted instruction appropriately. We ride Western, although Jennifer has a background in English, too. The girls loved the trails and the independence and self-satisfaction that comes from learning a new skill and doing things for yourself. I stayed close the first day, taking pictures and making sure they were attentive to her direction. The next day I brought my book and hung out on the bench looking out at the trees and listening to the chickens cluck. I highly recommend getting out there for a ride or having her teach your children. Jennifer is friendly and approachable, but firm and directive when needed to keep everyone safe as they learn proper horsemanship.

Jennifer was extremely knowledgeable and took the time to teach all 4 of my kids how to handle and take care of horses.

It was a perfect mix of a little uphill, downhill, very scenic with the mountain views. The horses were well behaved and we had a pretty big group too. The kids rode up front behind our trail guide and then my husband and I were behind them. My stepdaughter who's 11 had Gravy who was such a well-trained horse. She barely had to steer. I had Emmy Lou and she also was amazing, barely had to steer her. My husband had Shiner who took every opportunity to eat which was funny. Our trail guide was great! We also met the owner who was really nice. They have a lot of horses. Overall, highly recommend this horseback riding trail!

I had to go horseback riding because my stepdaughter is only 12 years old. The rule of the…read morehorseback riding trip is if the rider is a minor, then there has to be an adult accompanying him or her. My husband is probably scared of horses, so he made me signed myself up, knowing I am not fond of horse riding (the first time I was on a horse was when I was 9 years old). It was an easy find to go to the ranch. We walked into the meeting area, where we were briefed by the 2 guides about the horse and basic steps on how to maneuver with the horses in case they decide to stray off or something, but keep in mind these horses are able to keep up with single trail walking as long as they're feeling it and you as a rider aren't too nervous and tense because animals can sense your emotion, too! My horse just decided to stray off on his own for a bit, but I was able to guide him back to the group with the guide's help. My horse also decided that it was fun to run up the hill for a bit, and I was able to pull back on his reign to make him stop. Not the horse'a fault. It's animal's instinct. The part that really freaked me out most was when we all walked single line along the steep hill. I didn't want to look to my left because I didn't want to die. The horses are smart enough to not stray off from the path, so that was good. The ride is really 1 hour long like advertised in the payment. Remember that you will be greeted in the beginning, be introduced to your riding horse, be saddled up, be riding the whole way with 1 guide in the front of the line and 1 guide at the back of the line supervising, and be gone for about 1 good hour (ground level , up the hill, down the hill, then back to the ranch). The guides are really good about keeping up with the safety of the group, and the horses are good with their temperament. After the ride is over, the guides will help you get down from the horses and ask if you'd want some water and you are finished with your horse riding adventure. The horses around this ranch are muscular and well-taken care of, so .... No complain from me! Yes, my horse also wanted to snack some hay after the ride because he saw some hay from one of the stalls. I also got to see horse pooping and urinating, so how glorious was that ?

It is NOT for the faint of heart. The trails are mostly narrow with steep drop-offs (ie no two tracks), but the horses handle it beautifully, and at the end of the day you will likely say "Wow!". The Schertenleib's were on time and ready to go as scheduled. The location is well-marked and easy to find using their instructions. They gave a short introduction for new riders, and pick the horses to match the riders ability and experience. The horses appeared to this newbie to be healthy and very well-trained. Blaze and Frankie were our mounts, and they were fantastic Rosie led the ride, which lasted ~4-1/2 hours roundtrip through very rugged and remote terrain. Temperatures were in the mid 90's which likely resulted in not seeing any wild game. Approximately 2/3 of the way through the ride there is a 20-30 minute rest time at a remote cabin (available for rent from the state). Anything you bring will be limited to whatever you can fit into a small saddlebag, so pack lightly. We highly recommend True West Trail Rides, and we are looking forward to riding with them again!

We consider ourselves to be at intermediate riding level so 2 hours of very slow riding was a bit boring after a while. This is absolutely perfect for beginners. If you're an advance rider you'll be bored. Horses were gentle and friendly. They were well groomed and appeared healthy. The ride is somewhat scenic. Most of the ride was through the forest trail . Our guide could be more personable. I didn't really care much for interacting with her. Also, horses are trained to be walking very close to one another which personally I didn't like. I prefer riding some distance away from the horse in front of me. My horse's head was almost in the butt of the horse in front of me.

The trail was pretty good but if you're more than a beginner it's a little boring. I also wish our guide was a little more social, she was a little intimidating. She was also pretty rough with her horse kind of awkward watching her get actually mad at her horse as the guide. Other than that it was still fun to get out and meet a new horse. Owner responded to another comment of someone in the group and this experience is definitely not like what i've done before. Went over zero safety and it was just like let's start riding! But it was fun if you're a beginner and can't find another place.

I want to provide an honest account to help others make informed decisions. Overall Impression bottom line: this was the hunt from hell--a complete waste of hard-earned money. The only positive aspect of the experience was the food, which consisted of great meals. Accommodations and Facilities were just OK, not great. * Showers had less than 90 seconds of hot water, making it nearly impossible to clean up after long days in the field. * The bunks provided were constructed from simple plywood and 2x4's, lacking comfort. Guide Service and Professionalism can make or break a hunting experience and this destroyed any positive experience. * On arrival, we were told we would leave camp before daybreak; despite being ready, the guide didn't arrive until about an hour after daybreak. * We came with rifles zeroed for 200 yards. Len Howells, the outfitter, insisted we confirm zero at 100 yards, and when we were a couple of inches high, he demanded we re-zero. His behavior was condescending, implying we didn't know what we were doing, which set a negative tone for the remainder of the hunt. * I have never experienced such a lack of customer service, zero communication skills, or poor treatment from a guide. Misleading Claims on the website. * The Silver Bow Outfitters website claimed, "an area of over 380,000 acres on which they are the only licensed outfitter." In reality, every day we encountered other hunters. The guide complained about these being unwelcome hunters from Kalispell, Montana. We learned the area was not exclusive but was, in fact, a public hunting area. * The website also claimed the guides were experienced, knew the area well, and were excellent callers. However, on day one, the guide said the elk weren't "talking" but still spent five days calling with no response. There was one other hunter in camp during our stay, and they reported a similar experience. * On the final day of the hunt we past several creek bottom areas with more than ample forage. After hunting hours in very recently timbered areas, we simply observed that hunting may be more positive in better forage areas. The guide then stated that deer do not eat grass. Lack of Preparation and Effort * After day #2 with no elk sightings closer than 1,000+ yards and after casual conversation about possible elk locations, the guide admitted he had not scouted in over two months and had never shot an elk himself. * We were promised horseback-accessible spike camps but only saw three older, swayback horses at base camp. * Each day consisted of driving around in an SUV, stopping every 5-10 minutes to glass and spot. We would leave the SUV and hike once a day to a spot the guide deemed "good" for elk, sit for a couple of hours and listen while the guide smoked cigarettes, The guide claimed he heard elk--though neither of us heard anything. Any questioning was met with defensiveness. * On the final day, the guide told us to simply roll down the SUV window and shoot if we saw deer or elk--this is not how we hunt and was inappropriate. Lost Hunting Time and Unmet Expectations * Every day around 1 or 2 PM, the guide insisted we return to base camp, costing us 1 to 2 hours of hunting each day--about 30% of our valuable and expensive time. * We made it clear from day one that we wanted to hunt only elk, as we live in prime whitetail areas and could harvest deer any day. Despite this, we spent most of our time hunting for deer and bear (the guide had a bear tag). Conclusion This review is solely my opinion and based on my personal observations. In my view, this was a wasted hunt, and I will never contract with Silver Bow Outfitters again. I would not give this group a single star rating.

We were under the assumption that we would be hunting on private land when really it's public. We glassed for 5 days and never trekked once with the owner Len Howell. Told we were going to take horses out to get into the harder areas....that never happened. Had to go back to camp everyday at noon so Len could check on his wife and tend to the ranch. Unorganized and dirty and definitely a hoarding issue. Zach his son over slept for the other group going out as well. Definitely some unstableness in this family. So, to sum things up.... You will be hunting on public land cause he only owns 30 acres. You will not take horses out. The only guide that was worth talking about is Larry. He did a phenomenal job with our other two in our group. They actually hunted!!! Extremely disappointed in myself for not checking his reviews a long time ago! Cause all the stories are true. They will take your money and promise you an adventure of a lifetime. And last, but not least they put in the contract about tipping them. There is no way that they were going to get a tip from us because the whole trip sucked! The pics in comments are the main house we had to stay in with seven cats running around and got yelled at for letting them out. Which we did not do. The bunk house is extremely tight and housed ten people to try and eat meals and relax. There was no room at all. One of our days of glassing... cause that's all we did, we were up on the pole line and Len starts screaming his sons name cause he saw him down there glassing as well instead of being back at ranch to shoot in new clients. Ummm... hello!!! Where is in hunting 101 that you should be screaming to someone while your hunting!!!???? SMH ‍ *PHOTOS IN COMMENTS*
