    About Face Estate Sale Service

    (19 reviews)

I attended an estate sale on 5/9/26 in San Antonio, off Huebner/NW Military. When I arrived, the…read moreowner of About Face Estate Sales, Charles Keaton, was outside and said, "You better hurry up, Junior. We're closing soon." I replied, "Okay, buddy." I went inside and asked about buying some leftover books. He said, "For a reasonable price, not something like $10" -- which I wouldn't have offered anyway. Shortly after that, he thought it was a good idea to slap me on the back like we were best buds. Maybe he didn't like me throwing back his condescending demeanor outside. I went upstairs to look at the books and made an offer of $50 for everything. He immediately said, "That's way too low. That's way too low," then said that "she wouldn't accept that," which I assumed meant the homeowner or the person selling the contents of the house. He then said, "Yeah, she'd rather just donate them," which was fine. He also mentioned that she had a lot of money and acted like the books weren't worth his time unless they were making a killing off them. He didn't counter with a higher price to clear everything out or say something like, "If you buy X amount, we could give you a discount." Nothing. He just walked off. Don't say you make deals all the time if you have no intention of actually making a deal. Just say, "We're not accepting offers." What didn't make sense to me was why someone would rather donate the books instead of selling them and clearing them out. I already offer this service and also donate to various charities through my sales. It was apparent he didn't like negotiating, despite saying, "We make deals all the time." He just walked downstairs without saying something like, "Let me go ask the person who owns these books," or giving me any kind of update. A woman then came upstairs a couple of minutes later. She was either the homeowner, the owner of the books, or another staff member who had authority to negotiate, which didn't make sense since I thought Charles was the one I was dealing with. She was a little more reasonable when talking about prices. It's typically bad business practice to have the owner of the house/property being sold on the premises while the sale is going on. Many of the common books were exorbitantly overpriced, basically retirement pricing. It was obvious they weren't going to sell at $8 a pop for common books. I was basically doing them a favor by offering to buy everything. The way Charles went about negotiating and talking with me was really odd. I later went downstairs and could hear them upstairs discussing the deal I had worked out with the lady, if you could call it that. Charles said, "Yeah, we don't want to miss out on that $100," basically talking about how much they were going to make off me with their cut. The guy I interacted with, Charles Keaton, definitely needs to learn how to interact with customers and choose his words more carefully. He came across as tactless and unprofessional. I would never hire him or his company to handle an estate sale. Some estate sale companies seem to get the idea that just because they are selling someone else's possessions and putting price stickers on things, they can be condescending and unprofessional because the next person will just buy the items anyway. Charles, in particular, was by far the worst and most unprofessional person I've interacted with at an estate sale. I was also interested in buying some African wood art pieces in addition to the books, but Charles killed the deal over his pride. I've worked something out with several other estate sale companies, and it was always a win/win. First, know what you have, then go from there. Don't assume that just because there are a lot of common paperback and hardcover books, they're worth hundreds of dollars just because of whatever is written on the tacky little orange price labels stuck on every single spine. If they're leftover on the last day of the sale, they are most likely not worth anywhere near what you're asking, even at 50% off. And if you don't want to entertain offers, just say that and don't waste someone's time!

There is so much to manage at sales as you know if you have ever attended one but at his sales it never shows. He and his team are always so pleasant. Charles has such a jovial demeanor exhibiting so much enthusiasm for what he does and what he has to offer. He is a seasoned knowledgeable individual that is always able to assist with any questions you might have when shopping his sales. I always find more than intended at his sales and find his prices are reasonably priced and always see that much is competitively priced! I always leave with a smile and more than I expect to buy. Such a pleasure to do business with people like this. It's worth the drive wherever he is staging a sale.
