Dr. Jeffrey Jelic was the second oral and maxillofacial surgeon I visited in Durham, and I am so…read moreglad I went. The first one I visited charged me $375 for a consultation during which he told me nothing, except "I don't know why you have TMJ," and that I needed an MRI (which comes with a $150 copay and, let's face it, I'm not what you'd call wealthy), which he insisted I have done at one radiology clinic in particular. Un petit shady, non? Having suffered progressive TMJ and bruxism for nearly six years, that has resulted in constant pain and soreness, as well as malocclusion of my otherwise beautiful teeth, I was downtrodden after my visit to that first guy. But my dentist, Dr. Velma Cooper, referred me to Dr. Jelic. Interestingly enough, both attended the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and, even more impressively, Dr. Jelic also went on to earn his MD from the Medical College of Virginia School of Medicine. Homeboy is a DMD / MD, so you know he knows his stuff. In our consultation---only $90, thankyouverymuch---Dr. Jelic explained very clearly what our options were, as well as his preferences for the order in which we should try such interventions. Although he is a surgeon, he certainly didn't push surgery on me; in fact, it was presented as the very last and most radical tactic. The first was fitting me with an occlusal guard, which I have been wearing day and night to MUCH relief. Of course, this dental appliance isn't a cure but, at $1200 out of pocket---because dental insurance is a racket and doesn't cover TMJ, jerks---it is a comparatively affordable and certainly less invasive alternative to surgery. I opted for the appliance at my consultation, and our next appointment was set up for just a few days later, where they took molds of my teeth, which were sent off to be made into a mouth guard. The turnaround is about two weeks, and then there are several weekly appointments following for fittings---these are included in the $1200 paid for the guard---where Dr. Jelic whittles down and polishes away the appliance until it is subtle enough to be worn without much distraction or impediment to speech. I've been wearing mine day and night for a few months now, and am thrilled that I no longer have to deal with headaches caused by teeth clenching. The wearing down of the enamel on my molars has ceased, too, thank goodness. Georgia is the practice manager, and she runs a tight ship. Terri was great working with me on the cost, and I appreciated her kindness and forthrightness. Amanda, Kelly, and Sue round out the qualified team of medical professionals, and have all be a pleasure to work with. For now, the guard is working really well for me but, should I decide to try surgery at some point in the future, Dr. Jelic will absolutely be the surgeon I seek out.

Every…read moretime I walk in, I am warmly greeted and promptly seen by Angie, Emily, or Sarah (so far). Throughout the office visit, they are thoughtful and keep me informed of everything they are doing during the visit (e.g. steps in The Perfect Peel, areas where filler will be used, warning when I am about to be zapped by the laser, etc.) and are constantly checking on me to ensure that I am as comfortable as possible. After years of tanning beds, no facial sunscreen, harsh skincare, and only having Botox done quarterly instead of treating the entire surface with skincare and maintenance services, I have had a lot to catch up on over the last six months, but I can say that I am on a simple day and nighttime skincare routine and that, plus a BBL treatment, two chemical peels, and some hydrafacial action has DRASTICALLY improved my skin texture, pore size, hyperpigmentation, elasticity, hormonal and fungal cystic acne eruptions, etc. etc. etc. My results are always WAY BETTER THAN MY EXPECTATIONS! ALSO, the ladies at PrimeMD are ALWAYS working! Rather than selling services via social media, these platforms are used for educational purposes and responding to patients and potential patients that may have questions outside of regular business hours. I guarantee that every medical provider is an expert in any and all technologies, products, and services that they offer. From my personal experiences with aesthetics over the years, that is basically unheard of. I had been dealing with this rash on my chest for MONTHS and had been on topical and oral antibiotics, had had multiple blood panels done, and was even taking a large dose of allergy meds twice a day for WEEKS. Angie looked at my chest and recommended that I use a couple of drugstore products that help with fungal folliculitis and within DAYS, the rash was resolved! Another bonus: the facility is STATE OF THE ART but not "cold". It is warm and cheery, just like the staff! I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

On top of this I really like their business model, by not dealing with insurance companies directly they are able to save significantly and making healthcare truly accessible!

Dr. Brian Forrest, at Access Healthcare, runs an unusual medical practice. They don't file…read moreinsurance or deal with Medicare or Medicaid, so they have much lower overhead, and they can charge much lower prices than other docs. In fact, they list their prices on their web site! What other doctor does that?? www.acchealth.com Doctor Forrest is a fairly young (40-ish) doctor, but he does medicine the old fashioned way. They give you your care, and you pay them (cash or plastic), and they give you a receipt. Period, that's all. No paperwork (other than your medical history for your first visit). You get a receipt, so if you can get an insurance company to reimburse you, that's great, but it's your problem, not theirs! The result is that they charge much less than other docs. In fact, their charges are often not much more than the insurance co-pay elsewhere! A standard office visit is $49, and that gets you a half hour with the doc or nurse practitioner, not the 10 minutes or so that $100 or $150 will get you elsewhere. What's more, Dr. Forrest has lined up cash-discount deals with many local medical specialists for his patients, for services that he doesn't provide himself, like radiology. He promises the specialists that the patients he sends them will pay immediately with cash or credit/debit card, and zero paperwork, and in return they give his patients steep discounts. The resulting savings can be amazing, as I discovered in August, 2008, when I fell from a ladder and injured my wrist. X-rays showed a non-displaced acute distal radius fracture (i.e., I broke the end of the big bone in my forearm). I got a fancy brace, a prescription analgesic, and three office visits, each with x-rays and radiologist's report. I paid for it all with my HSA debit card. Guess what it cost? Most people guess $3000-$5000. It was actually $270. When I tell people that, most don't comprehend it. They assume $270 was the sum of my insurance deductibles. Wrong. Insurance paid nothing. (My low-cost HDHP insurance doesn't kick in until I spend about $5000.) $270 was the total cost. (Note: that was 2.5 years ago, so it would probably be a little over $300, now.) With traditional insurance and a typical doctor, my out-of-pocket cost would have been similar, plus the insurance company would have paid thousands. That money, in the final analysis, would've mostly paid for bureaucracy and paperwork, rather than medical care. At Access Healthcare, all you buy is the medical care. THIS is how real medical reform should work! It is encouraged by President Bush's HSA/HDHP-based reforms. Sadly, ObamaCare (unless it is repealed) is going to gradually squeeze this kind of practice out of existance. It will require that everyone have insurance, and that every insurance policy pay for 100% of routine checkups and other preventive care. That will not only jack up the cost of insurance, and add the insurance company overhead to every minor office visit, it will also mean that medical practices which don't accept insurance won't have any customers for routine checkups. And, since everyone goes to the same doctor for illness & minor injury that they go to for checkups, the no-insurance docs won't have customers for those things, either. They won't have any choice but to start taking insurance, and hire the staff to handle the paperwork. Then, once they DO accept insurance, they'll not only have the same additional overhead/cost that other docs have, ObamaCare will require them to comply with every regulation issued by the Secretary of HHS, or else the insurance companies won't be allowed to contract with them. The bottom line is that unless ObamaCare is repealed, government will be in charge of your medical care, instead of great doctors like Dr. Brian Forrest of Access Healthcare. Dave
