Spencer, the estate sale "professional", was hovering in and out of rooms. Felt like he was treating everyone as a thief. Asked him a question and was told "There will be more stuff brought out today and tomorrow!" Not what I asked nor what I was interested in. Make my pile out front and go to check out with the elderly man at the table "Oh no Spencer makes all the prices!" First and last time I will ever be at one of these sales. If you are a potential customer looking to have someone do your estate sale, find someone else. The lack of preparation, presentation, or professionalism should scare you away. The customer at this sale should have just ran a garage sale themselves, they would at least cut out the non work this guy does. If you're a potential buyer coming to the sale: it's like going to the flea market where nothing is priced and when you pick it up, it's worth the world. You're doing the work for them, avoid!

I have…read morealso been a lifelong collector and have attended literally hundreds of estate sales and auctions. Admittedly, I made some costly errors when hiring estate liquidators years ago. My advice is to BEWARE and proceed with caution. This industry is self-regulated and there are no uniform standards or certification requirements. Here in the Coachella Valley, JnJ Estate Sales is the one I recommend without hesitation. When we moved to the valley, a friend needed help moving into assisted living, so we contacted several companies. They were all eager to get this gig. Initially we were swayed by those offering an incredibly low percentage of the proceeds. Keep in mind that an estate sale done properly is labor intensive and no one works for free. We paused long enough to do some legwork and our homework. We attended some sales in person. We were surprised at how casually the company with the alleged lowest percentage did business. Virtually nothing was priced. Studies have shown that even garage sales sell more when everything is priced. The absence of prices led to a line where each customer had to haggle with someone over the value of each item. This informality simply looked like chaos and we ended our consideration of that outfit. Eventually, we became convinced that our friend's possessions would be best served in the hands of JnJ Estate Sales and we weren't disappointed. An estate liquidator is a position of trust. These gentlemen lack the bravado but convey depth of knowledge and sensitivity that earned our trust. They took no short cuts, methodically evaluating and organizing the home's entire contents. In conclusion the actual net sales far exceeded our expectations. The accounting was clear and there were no surprises or hidden fees. If you need an estate sale, do your homework. Ask for a copy of the contract prior to agreeing to a meeting. Ask if they pre-cherry-pick the estate. Unlike JnJ, many use these sales to stock their online or retail stores. These conflicts of interest among liquidators are common. Ask what is done with remnants after the sale. JnJ not only left the house broom-clean but Marine clean. John is a veteran of the USMC and served honorably. That Marine work ethic and discipline still serves JnJ clients well. We highly recommend JnJ to anyone downsizing a home, liquidating an estate, or selling a collection.
