Let's start with a few facts: I am moving overseas in two weeks. that means LOTS of important work with finances, wills, etc, all having to be done on line. All I have is my laptop, a brand-new Lenovo. Yesterday I put the top down on the laptop, and left for a day in Portland. When I got home, my laptop refused to connect to the Internet. I launched into all the obvious troubleshooting: the modem, even connecting a hard line to my laptop. It's almost 5:30 on a Friday, mind you, and I'm going to be without a computer for...how long? Affordable Computers was six minutes from my house. I called, they said get it here, we'll do all we can and even take it to another shop if we can't fix it by eight. I broke a speed record delivering it to the shop, where their charming yellow lab handed me the Frisbee as the shop took my computer. They said no matter what, it's $199, the emergency rate- believe me I was HAPPY if only they could fix the problem. Barely an hour later, I get the call. Come on down, we're all done. Turns out that there was some crap Windows app (of course there was), the RealTek card needed to be replaced with an Intel card, and by the way, your VPN was on. And by the way, we're giving you the card, and on top of that, a replacement HP cord for an ancient laptop that I had to drag out of storage just in case only to find out that it had broken. So now I am back to having two working laptops, albeit I now have to re-tape that storage box. Who cares, right? Jess is that kind of kindhearted super pro tech who understands that when a customer walks in with their face looking like a dead fish and an emergency on her hands, you swoop in with your cape and get the job done. There's no guarantee, not really, that everyone's problem can be fixed that fast but here's my bottom line: computer pros know better than all of us what the typical issues are, especially with new laptops and gear that is loaded with crap that causes all kinds of problems. They can cut through to more efficient troubleshooting and figure out your issue. When you have an emergency at 5:30 pm when everyone else is closing up shop, and you can bring your gear in and get greeted by a very happy dog and people who know what they're doing and who are dedicated to getting your problem fixed because they get the urgency, you share the good news. Affordable had been referred to me by a friend year ago, and this was the first time I really needed them. My tech expert up in Portland, who was helping me troubleshoot from his drive home and who was completely at his wits' end, said TELL ME WHO THEY ARE, because he's got friends in Eugene who need a trusted resource. This is a trusted resource. Jess made sure I knew how to get logged back in now that I had a new Intel card, and I'm back in business. I have had to deal with Geek Squad and plenty of other folks over the years often to very questionable outcomes. As a journalist, I am done without a working laptop. Affordable understood my issue, and handed me back my laptop in much better shape than when I turned it in. I can't give anyone a more heartfelt set of five-star kudos than this. I can count on one hand the number of businesses who deserve more than 5 stars if that were possible. Jess at Affordable Computers is absolutely one of these. I love a good small/local business where they pride themselves on customer service, and I got that here. My husband and I bought a laptop from him several years ago. In fact, I had completely forgotten about this until a couple days ago. Because the computer worked so well and I never had issues. Thank goodness he attached a business card to the bottom of it. Otherwise I never would have remembered the name and gone to the old location. The other night I was working on my blog and tech support for my hosting company had me download a program to help with my blog. Well it gave me a virus. Or, 157 to be exact. I tried running programs to get rid of it and all it did was frustrate me more. So I turned it off and just decided to let a professional handle it. I called Jess Wednesday to see if I needed an appointment or anything, he said just bring it in. Said he would charge a flat fee of $85 and quoted me a three day turn around time. Awesome. Went in Thursday to take it to him, explained what I needed to keep on there and also explained it kept giving me the notification it was running low on disk space. Since it hadn't been doing that for long, I figured it may have been the virus or something embedded in the hard drive just taking up excess room. Really didn't think I needed a new hard drive or a bigger one. So said, the current one was fine. Jess said he may be able to get it all done in one day, but no promises. Well that would be amazing. Except my husband was scheduled to get off work right at 8. He was willing to stay a few minutes late to give my husband time to get there and pick it up. Which was super sweet, in my opinion. His time is just as valuable as ours, so to be willing to wait on us was huge. Obviously we weren't going to make him wait long and my husband rushed over from work. Jess also said the hard drive really was small and we did have it filled up. It wasn't just excess crap like I thought. He replaced the 100 gig hard drive with a 500 gig for no extra charge. He also was kind enough to clean the fans on the laptop while he was in there. Which was badly needed. So for a whopping $85, I had the viruses wiped off my computer, brand new bigger hard drive, and the fans cleaned. This was done in a mere 24 hours, and my computer works even better than it did before. Yeah, I'm impressed. Would I return? Oh yeah. We are customers for life! Jess has incredible customer service, his prices are fair, and he went the extra mile to restore my laptop into pristine condition. Took to them a new HP Envy to them along with components including new monitor, mouse, keyboard, printer, Seagate backup disk, and previous unworking desktop box for setup and data transfer. This company goes beyond expectations in setting up the system, checking everything out and making it work. They labeled the cords and took the time to explain how to set up at home. Took disk out of old computer and retrieved all important data, including documents, pictures and browser bookmarks. The latter was a bonus given that the old computer wouldn't boot. My laptop died Friday afternoon. I took it to Affordable Computers based on the great reviews (and the poor service I've had at big box locations in the past - I'm looking at you Geek Squad). Affordable Computers did the repair the SAME DAY!! - I had it back, like new, in just a couple hours! For their $99 flat repair rate plus the part that needed to be replaced, which seems like a great deal, especially for fast/expedited service. They spent time explaining options when I dropped it off, and then what they ended up needing to do when I picked it up. Her tech associate is knowledgeable; he answered each of my questions patiently and thoroughly. This made it easy to decide which type of system I needed. Like other reviewers I can't say enough about how great Jess and his team are, including the resident pups Caesar and Milo! I fell for a hacker scam that copied all my files pretending to be Microsoft. I was in full panic mode. After calling the credit union and closing our bank account we knew my laptop could not be used again until it was swept clean. Thank goodness for Jess and the team! My husband dropped off my laptop at 2:30 in the afternoon and I picked it up at 7:30 that evening. Wow! Their prices are so affordable so please provide a gratuity if you can in appreciation of their fine work. I felt so foolish that I fell for that pop-up Microsoft Defenders alert telling me to call Microsoft to help me through the alleged virus that was on my computer. This was one slick operation that kept me going for over an hour before we figured out it was all bogus. Unfortunately, by then it was too late. I was the 4th person to come into AC in the past few days who had fallen victim to this scam. As Jess said, it will only happen once! I've learned my lesson and thank goodness AC was there to help. This time I thought about replacing both the tower and lap top with one new lap top, but decided to try repair and clean up one more time. Jess saved my butt after my laptop was hacked. He responded immediately when I called and knew exactly what to do to take care of the problem. Cleaned everything up, reinstalled my data, and charged me a pitifully low sum to do it. Trust worthy, reliable computer repairmen are hard to find. It's sort of like coming across an honest auto shop- rare, but when you find one you thank your lucky stars. Jess is a small business owner and mainly does repair, but also sells cheap parts. You can basically find whatever it is you're looking for here. I've had him replace my mac battery, and have bought AC adapters from him from literally a fraction of the price I'd have paid from the manufacturer. If people ever tell you never to take your computer in to get worked on because it would be cheaper to get a new computer, DON'T LISTEN TO THEM! Yes, a majority of computer repair places do overcharge, but I was convinced that someone out there was reasonable. And that's when I found Affordable Computers in my search. I have a decent laptop that I've owned for three years and despite the fact that reviews said the fans in my particular model weren't the greatest, I didn't experience any major issues. When I started playing games with decent graphics on it, I noticed overheating problems right away. After about two years of this and the problem getting worse and worse (and employing an armada of fans on it just to keep it cool) I was fed up and decided I wasn't gonna use my laptop til the issue was resolved. A day or two later I paid a visit to Affordable Computers. Upon walking in, I instantly felt that I had made the right choice. Jess is super friendly and very knowledgeable about anything computer related and has the experience to back it up. I told him my tale of my laptop woes and he told me what was wrong with it, how a laptop should properly cool and why it was having problems with that. He showed me before and after photos of laptop vents so full of dust he compared it to the lint trap in a dryer and that's why it was overheating so badly. Nasty! The cleaning fee? $45!!! I handed my laptop over to him with complete faith in him. Something else he told me was that my fan might need to be replaced if it was broken (but they can be replaced for $15 so no biggie). Now he could've went ahead and replaced it if he wanted the extra cash, but he didn't! It was fine the way it was AND he told me how to upkeep it so I would no longer have to come to him for emergency cleaning. Even more reason to be impressed with his service. My husband and I have found our computer guy!! I have since told my mother about him who took in her laptop, was very impressed and has also left a review here. Thank you so much Jess! Once there, Jess did a diagnostic test and showed me that all of the slow restarts were due to a failing hard drive. He recommended a new solid state HD that would speed things up fast. Jess gave me an estimate He left the old HD as a secondary drive for file transfers, and had it back to me the next day. It's one thing to have a great first impression with a small business (that review can be found on Google maps) but it's another to have a very positive repeat experience. As I said in my other review, I know computers. I know hardware, I know software and I do my best to stay up to date with the times. I'm not saying this as a brag, I'm saying this because I have high expectations when getting assistance with my main rig. I'd notice if someone were to screw up or cut corners. So when I had a mishap that resulted in a ruined motherboard, I called Jess. I was pleasantly surprised that he remembered me from over six months ago and I was happy that he was willing and able to rebuild my rig for the second time this past year rather than simply trying to sell me on a new computer (something the big box stores most certainly would have done). He worked quickly to get the parts as soon as possible and when they arrived that I felt like I got every penny's worth of service.
