I loved Affordable Interior Design so much I used it twice. I worked with Betsy both times - first moving into a one bedroom from a studio and getting all new furniture, then moving into a new one bedroom with a totally different layout and re-using as much as possible. As a bachelor without design sense it was one of the best investments I could have made. It saved me so much time and anxiety about which pieces to pick and every single person who has visited has been amazed by how nicely decorated my apartment is. The process is exactly as described by other reviewers - introductory call, questionnaire, in home visit, and follow up call a week or two later with a mood board and shopping list. I am very happy with my decision to use Affordable Interior Design and with Stephanie, the designer I worked with. First, the design questionnaire was excellent - especially for someone like me who doesn't know much about interior design. It was able to identify my design preferences by showing different living rooms and asking which ones were to my liking. In addition, its questions served as a great preparation for the home visit, so Stephanie came well prepared for our meeting. Stephanie was very creative, professional, and helpful throughout the process. When she visited my place, we decided on a design together, in an efficient process, where she was able to translate my needs and preferences to interior design decisions and furniture choices. After two weeks, she assembled a furniture shopping list, within the budget I requested. I purchased all items she suggested. The furniture items were sourced from many furniture stores and I felt she did an excellent job finding items that were beautiful, fit the overall design, and reasonably priced. I get nothing but compliments about my place (even from my Architect friend who is quite stingy with design related complements...). Well done Stephanie! As to the cost-effectiveness of the service - had I done this process myself (even with friends help), I would have surely spent more time, more money, getting worse results. I've worked with Betsy on several different projects for my house now over the past 8 years, all as virtual consults because I'm in CA. I absolutely love working with Betsy and have learned so much from the multiple experiences, the most important lesson being - don't question Betsy's guidance! :-). I like to think I have good taste but that doesn't mean I know how to pull a room together. Plus if left to myself, I would stay limited to what I know. And working with Betsy helped me realize I didn't know that much. If you ever feel like there's something still missing to your space, you know what I mean. I actually worked briefly with a local designer just because I thought it would help to do it in person, but I was never totally comfortable with her because she wasn't as approachable. That's the other thing I really value about working with Betsy and AID... they never make you feel like you can't afford to have a great looking room. They never, ever make you feel uncomfortable about budget or intimidated about the process. I think that's one of the best things about working with Betsy and her team. They make good design assessible. Plus Betsy is an awesome designer. For me, she really "got" me. She knew I like color and pattern so when I asked for a neutral MBR recently because I aspire to have a white room but can never quite keep my passion for color at bay, she came up with such an amazing solution for me and spec'd furnishings and colors (yes, color!) that I would not have thought of. The staff is nice, but the interior designer I was assigned to wasn't able to get it done...she's not based where I reside (I live in NYC), so I found out the hard way she wasn't familiar with what could/couldn't happen with apartments in my area, plus, she wasn't familiar with the parameters for which the handyman services (provided by AID) could actually help with certain tasks. I was told to make calls to a couple of companies we agreed to use in order to complete the project and ask design-specific questions...which I couldn't understand (especially since it was for companies AID has trade discounts for; I imagined making those type of calls were part of the package I paid for, but apparently I was wrong). Ultimately, I was sold a dream on a concept that couldn't happen (after the initial disappointment from the first reveal call because she didn't focus on what I explained was my design style). I tried to hang in there for an alternative solution for as long as I could, but between the design fee, and a few items I purchased off the curated shopping list which the designer sourced for my project, I'd already spent thousands of dollars...for nothing; I had to stop before it got worse, because I'm disabled with a budget to stick to, and I could only see things continuing in a downward spiral. As I stated in the beginning of this long review...at least she was pleasant. Nevertheless, this experience was a waste of both my time and money....based on these other reviews from the highly-satisfied, perhaps I simply didn't have the right designer for my needs. Ps Response time (which is primarily through email) isn't the best). I can't say enough about Affordable Interior Design. I recommend them to everyone who is looking to improve their living space. We first used them a few years ago in our NYC apartment, and they transformed the place from basically a dorm room into a beautiful space with functional living areas that is a pleasure to be in. We returned to the company a few months ago to help us design and furnish our new beach house, which was built in 1903. Stephanie has been unbelievable. She drove to our house (1.5 hours from the city) on 3 separate occasions and spent many hours with us there doing 4 3-room makeovers, including outdoor spaces. We have used AID three times so far. The first time I had the pleasure of meeting Betsy in person. She did the first apartment my husband and I bought together as a couple. Betsy paid attention to every detail. Of course we wanted something well designed, but she thought of everything. Once everything was in place we enjoyed the fact that the design fit the way we used the space to a T. Our apartment was large, but her design made it look huge, and yet stylish and cozy. When we put the apartment up for sale it sold the first showing. I'm convinced it was the well thought out design, which gave us an edge over the other apartments for sale in the building. The realtor actually told me I had good taste and an eye for design. We now live in Tennessee in an older ranch house with the most impossible floor plan. I called Betsy first chance I got. I had learned a lot from her but, knew I couldn't handle this one my self. Betsy came up with the best plan possible for the space. I got everything I asked her for, and so much more. She used a beloved painting as an inspiration piece, and came up with the most amazing design. I call it elegant farmhouse. Every piece she chose fits perfectly, as if it were made for the space. All this was done remotely, we also chose to use her buying service this time, which saved us a lot of work and headaches. I'm still blown away at the result. We just recently asked Betsy to source the finishing touches. Once I put the accessories in place I was even more in love with my space. It was remarkable how a few small choices enhanced the already great design. I could go on about this service but, I'll just end it by saying you won't be disappointed with the fantastic service. Everything I hoped it would be. I recently moved from Manhattan to the 'burbs and was struggling with creating a cohesive look with my existing furniture from a 1-br apartment in a larger house. Paulina came to work on two rooms in my house (living room and home office). She asked great questions to get a sense of my style, helped steer me in the right direction, and provided a great curated list of suggested items within a few days. She also provided extremely specific instructions on where to hang art, place the furniture, rugs, etc., so it was idiot proof. I did the Makeover package for an alcove studio apartment in Manhattan. It started off with a 15 minute intake call. After the call, I filled out a questionnaire and a designer came to my apartment for 2 hours to look at the space. I then received an item list a week and a half later. There was a follow up call to discuss the item list and, based on the call, I received a few alternative items to purchase. Overall, I was pleased with the experience. I thought the designer did a very good job of finding furniture that met my needs and objectives. My only gripe is that they weren't as responsive as I would have liked - some times days would go by without a response to an inquiry. That being said, I thought it was a good service and I would recommend using them. read more

After months of struggling to properly decorate our condo (smart Manhattan developers know how to maximize square footage for sale to increase prices but do not always create livable space for the resident), I researched interior design companies and found Affordable Interior Design via Yelp. My husband and I were not looking to create a showroom of our home; what we wanted was a warm, welcoming environment in which to live. We worked with Allison R in Summer 2016 to help decorate our living room and master bedroom. The entire process was a delight. I worked in management consulting for many years and appreciate a streamlined process focused on positive results as well as an engaging client experience. Betsy (the owner) was our first point of contact. Our email interactions with Betsy were prompt and professional. Prior to meeting with Allison, we were sent a questionnaire which probed deeper into what our vision for our home would be both aesthetically (color palette, style, etc.) as well as what we want our home to be from a living perspective, i.e. how does our home function for us and how do we want it to feel. In our work estimate, we opted to decorate two rooms of our home. Post-questionnaire submission, Allison visited us at home. She was prepared, punctual, an excellent listener (thank you Allison...you made us feel heard), and very knowledgeable (just by viewing our space she was able to make excellent estimates about rug sizing, furniture placement, etc. but did also take precise measurements to ensure accuracy). She made sure she knew which items we were willing to replace as well as items we wanted to keep. Post meeting, Allison scheduled a call with us to go over our design board. She walked us thru why she chose certain pieces and how they would work in our space. We were also given electronic link suggestions as to where we could purchase the items. We emailed Allison a couple of times for clarification about our design board and she was responsive and thorough each time. Overall, I am very pleased with Allison's suggestions and her vision of our home. We purchased items piece-meal so it took us a bit longer to get everything we wanted but that was our choice. After 2 years of living in my dull undecorated apartment I decided to contact Betsy for the 3-hour budget plan. Being a musician, money is always tight. I didn't want to spend any money on decoration that I wasn't sure was going to work in my apartment or not. This plan seemed like a great deal since I had absolutely NO IDEA what to do when it came to interior decorating. For the first hour, Betsy help me decide on how to arrange my furniture so the living space would serve all my needs, but also followed good feng shui. I have a huge piano in my living room which took up half the space leaving barely any room for a tv/lounge area. I didn't even have a place to eat. Betsy somehow helped me figure it out so I could have all my needs fit in one space..without making it looked cramp (in fact my living room looks even bigger now!) The second hour consisted of us figuring out what kind of furniture and decoration was needed. It was like taking decorating 101. I learned so many things about decorating that I could apply to not only in my current space but future spaces if I ever decide to move. In the 3rd hour, Betsy emailed me links to furniture that she personally picked for me. I really loved all of her selections and the fact that they all fit within my $1000 budget was amazing. I started implementing the ideas I learned from her the minute she left. 2 days later the apartment already looks like a different place. The $275 is totally worth it if you are in a situation like me and really have a desire and motivation to redecorate your apartment. Betsy will leave you with a strong foundation and the confidence to make future design choices on your own. Betsy is the best. She transformed my apartment from a boring, tasteless, new place to live into a HOME. Her fees are reasonable and well worth it because I never could have done it on my own. My $79.99 mirror from Ikea she recommended gets me complements from all my visitors who think it was more like $400 or so. And she made me love west elm while recommending the more affordable pieces there. And the best part is Betsy tells it like it is. Consider this exchange: Me: "Betsy, where should I put this lantern I bought in Europe?" Betsy: "I think it would look best in the closet." Me: "Oh okay, what should I do with it in there?" Classes are structured in a very practical manner. It sets up a basic layout and gives you a foundation about what to take care of step-by-step. And yes, Betsy is absolutely an amazing presenter. That being said, it's not an inspirational design class focusing on creativity like in school, Betsy's lectures contain extremely dense information and tons of directional tips such as what to look and where to buy. For most people, that probably works. For me, one of the down sides is that I am not a Parisian, Bohemian, or edgy romanticist, but rather, a fonder of minimalism, Japanese/northern European style. I doubt Betsy shares the same taste as I do. So I would have to be my own designer. But thanks so much for opening the door of interior design. It totally helps me think and learn going forward. I'm so happy with these guys! I worked with Paulina and she was so wonderful. She did a great job of capturing my style while still encouraging me to be a little more creative. I love that there's zero pressure to buy. Some of the pieces Paulina recommended were so unique that I bought them right away. Others, I've been happily hunting Craigslist for similar (or even exact) copies. I'm slowly accumulating things, but once everything is done I'll put photos on here. I'm so behind on leaving feedback for Affordable Interior Design, and particularly Kelsey Surock. I worked with her almost a year ago, and I can honestly say I am still so happy with the results. From start to finish, it was a completely spectacular experience. From the get go, Betsy was very helpful coordinating and scheduling with me. I was on a bit of a time crunch, and they totally took that into account and made it work! I had moved into my lovely, albeit sterile, new development-y apartment 5 months earlier. I love pre-war apartments and old finishes, so this was an uphill battle for sure. I was really hoping to make it look and feel more like home - like a personal sanctuary in this crazy, busy city. I have a pretty specific design aesthetic, but I don't have the time and patience to source items, and I'm particularly terrible at finding rugs, lamps, and curtains that work with a space. I had most of the main pieces I needed, but I really needed help pulling everything together. And my walls were a very sad, blank slate. I feel like Kelsey did a good job of understanding my aesthetic. I was very pleased with the items she sourced and her vision for the space. She completely transformed my living room and bedroom walls with interesting artwork and placement. She designed a gallery wall that I just love. I'd say I purchased about 60% of the items Kelsey suggested, and I've been happy with all of them. I've gotten so many compliments on how lovely my apartment is, and that's 100% thanks to AID. The most important aspect for me was the timing. I was in a rush to get items in place before I had a VIP guest coming to stay (new, long distance boyfriend!), and Kelsey literally moved her schedule around to make it work. I was so grateful! Our house was furnished with a mixture of old, new and hand-me-down furniture of various styles and looks. I needed help bringing everything together and making the mish-mash of styles and furniture feel cohesive and "homey." Not only did I have a limited budget, I wanted to keep most of the furniture we already had. After reading mixed reviews of Home Polish and Havenly, I came across AID and have been so pleased with the results. Paulina provided a beautiful design and a concrete, easy plan for implementing it. She met with me for a few hours, in which we discussed everything, and she took pictures and measurements. Shortly thereafter, we had a call in which she presented me with a detailed floor plan complete with measurements that I could simply give my handyman, as well as a list of items to purchase (with direct links to the stores), and a mood board which gave me a sense of how everything would look once it came together. This was a perfect solution since I don't need assistance in purchasing or installing items in my home. Paulina is an incredible designer. She transformed our living/dining room, and master bedroom. She quickly grasped what I wanted to achieve and stayed within the various constraints I had in terms of budget, the items I wanted to keep, and various practical concerns of a family with young children. Even before I bought a single item, Paulina vastly improved our space simply by rearranging our existing furniture. I've slowly been adding to the design with the items she recommended, and the result is a cohesive, polished look that works with our family - even with two children under the age of five. I'm sure she has many clients, but she the level of individual attention I've received and her knowledge of my home and what I wanted to achieve made me feel like I was the only one. read more

This review is way overdue! We hired Betsy 4 years ago to design our one bedroom apt and she did not disappoint. We didn't have an idea of how we wanted our apt to look other than we wanted to be functional, wow our friends and not be broke after doing it. After a short questionnaire, Betsy (who has a great sense of humor) walked us through the entire process, told us exactly what to furniture/pieces to get and where to place it to get the look we were looking for all at a budget we were comfortable with. She worked within my budget, we went back and forth on email several times on different ideas, I sent her pictures of items she had suggested once they arrived and she sent me tips on how to make them look best. Once we decided collectively on the layout, we talked budget, furniture and measurements. Betsy provided exact measurements where all the furniture and wall hangings should be placed. After we finished our walkthrough Betsy said she would have our furniture picked out in a week. We scheduled a call with Betsy within the week as promised. During the call Betsy provided us with options for all the furniture items we picked out and going over why she picked each item. The intake process is very professional: first there is a phone consultation, followed by a questionnaire to help them understand the client's taste, as well as their needs and goals for the space. Working with Allison R. was great. We really felt that she understood us. She helped us work out a solution to our slightly tricky living room space planning. By the time the home visit was finished, we had the layout figured out. About a week later, we had a phone conference to go over the mood boards and shopping list that she had put together for us. All of the items she sourced were perfectly within our budget, and where we weren't 100% sure about some of the initial suggestions, she came up with alternatives. Allison helped us figure out our style and used our inspiration pictures to find great pieces for our home. She showed us several options for key pieces such as the bed, sofa, and dining table at different price points. She was also very responsive and got back to us very quickly with all her suggestions. The team at Affordable Interior Design is simply fab! I first used Betsy when I moved to a new downtown apt in Jan of 2011. I was overwhelmed with the space and also overwhelmed with the idea of living solo in my first grown up apt. I wasn't sure where the hell to begin! I wanted a fresh start, but I wasn't ready to spend my total salary on my new pad. I began googling "NYC interior design" and came across companies that seemed waaaaaaaaay out of my league in terms of budget. I mean, I was a 29 yr old career chick with SOME money to spend on furniture and home goods, but not thousands upon thousands of dollars. I began to wonder if anything other than fancy pantz design studios existed in NYC. So I was more than hopeful when I came across the Affordable Interior Design website. And, you'll be happy to know, the services exceeded my expectations!! Betsy held my hand through the entire process. She opened my eyes to items and design concepts which I would not have initially considered, and she managed to source great materials, all within my budget. One of the highlights was having her help me pick paint colors for the walls of the apt. Which is something that I find tedious and beyond overwhelming. Betsy nailed the colors, and that helped set the tone for the rest of the space. After the paints were picked, we worked on a floor plan. Betsy sourced fabulous items and taught me how to better understand interior design in general. My place looked finished and fabulous! A few years later in 2013, I called up Betsy again when my fiancee-now-husband moved in with me. The idea was to work with Besty to help us create a newly updated and truly shared space. It was so useful to have a third person help us! And my hubby and I are now so happy with our home. She even sourced one of a kind (and yet affordable!) art for above our bed, which we LOVE!! Something to note: we've taken Betsy's suggestions over time, as opposed to buying everything in one shot, in order to make the updating process more gradual and more budget friendly. And that's one of the great things about working with Affordable Interior Design--you have an email of the sourced materials from the follow up conference call, so one can always go back and purchase items when the time is right (assuming they're still in stock, obviously). Or, if you decide down the line that perhaps you don't want that exact lamp, the initial sourced ideas give you a great jumping off point to then riff on. Overall, it gives you a solid template to work from on your own timeline. I've also used Betsy with my office space at my job. Co workers and colleagues constantly tell me how incredible my office looks! I can't speak more highly about Affordable Interior Designs!!! If I could give them ten stars I would. We dealt with Kelsey Surock, first a few years ago, where she speaheaded a complete makeover of our three-bedroom Upper East Side apartment. We're a family with two teenagers, maybe a bit older and more 'settled' han their target audience, so we weren't completely sure if this service was for us. The cost was so low comparitively, and they make now $$ off of the price of the items they source After an initial interview and questionairre, she visits for a few hours and proceeded to do what it take others who charge five times what she charges five times as long. Measuring, getintg a sense of our interests, the sorts of people we are, how to express our identities through our decor, and how we function, or wish to function, in our apartment. By the time she left - after just a few hours - we had an agreed upon layout. Less than a week later, bang. She sourced all of the items online, gave us detailed instrructions on where things would go, i.e. plug-and-play. We went for retro-modern shabby chic - a few substantial pieces mixed inexpensive but nice looking items. She gave us options at various price points. For more $$ they'd bring in their own people but we actually loved the process where we handle the ordering and installation. What's especially wonderful is how patient she was and generous with he at all times. Wee had some concerns about what was sourced (being type A people we always question things), and she worked with us, sourcing alternatives, etc. rather than making us feel as though we're butting in. But I can say that, ultimately, she was right about everything. When we doubted that a navy couch was too unusual (and easy to spot dust), when we installed it it was PERFECT. I'm writing this now because after two years we heard from them about a new service they offer, which is a 'refresh' of the origital design. A visit, assessment, and perhaps moderate changes. I am now sitting in my 'refreshed' apartment" and just after a few weeks we have a beautiful new rug better rug, a few more vibant colors courtesy of some inexpensive accessessory items, etc. Kelsey is very easy to be around, whipsmart, and the ideas - and explanations underlying them - flow out of her rapidly and coherently. I hear that Betsy is great but if you work with her protege Kelsey I doubt that it's a step down., I would use them without hesitation, especially before they end upon HGTV! read more
