Estimate seemed high (and potentially inflated by the cost of the piano - why should that matter other than 'because you can'?). This is a very common San Francisco floor plan with a tight staircase and landing to navigate. Communication was constant and clear. It took me a couple days to actually book McCrea's due to me being unsure and wishy washy. Each time I called them, they were very quick in responding back and totally understanding about my need to have thought through decision process. We scheduled for today between 12:30-1pm. They called around 1pm to say they'd be 20 min late. Later peering into the truck, I saw they were busy moving a huge concert grand piano...Whoa my lord! You're forgiven!!! Only two men deep, they came friendly, professional and in uniform. They were in and out by 1:30pm! So quick, I had to do a double take on the time. They were extremely efficient with minimal use of tools and equipment. How? It is obvious that they know what the are doing, moving not with strength but with balance the entire time. It was kinda weird. Like they were guiding my piano through Yoga poses. Have you ever seen a piano in Ardha Chandrasana with Pada-Hastasana? How about Dhanurasana? I have! McCrea AA just moved my 6' 4" 100 year old Steinway A III. There were tight corners, lots of rickety steps, topological problems to solve, and a doting owner (me) watching it all. Greg, Jeremy and a third guy (sorry forgot his name) were professional, friendly and remarkably strong. They handled my piano with respect and appreciation and took great care to move that 800lb giant without a chance of damage to it or the houses involved. The clarity of their communication with each other while working is a thing to behold. This is my third (or maybe fourth) move with them. I wouldn't trust anyone else with the piano. Our pickup location was technically outside of their service area, but they were very accommodating both on the pickup and the delivery (they kept our piano safely stored in their warehouse until we were back in town, after being away unexpectedly). Matteo was very respectful and thoughtful in handling the piano and giving us the opportunity to take our time deciding exactly where it should go. He gave us a ton of great pointers about how to keep our hardwood floors from getting scratched, ideal placement for the piano, and how to keep it in great shape. Highly recommend! read more

Well... here is my mixed feelings about this. I called a week ago to move a piano, upright, nothing super fancy moving within stand city only 4 exits on freeway. Supposedly I was quoted $255 for the piano, and I told them I have a dresser that needs to be moved as well. I was told ok no problem, it will be about $45 but it won't be free. Ok understood so I confirmed with my mom. The day of, they were suppose to arrive early in the morning by 9:30, and didn't show up, didn't give me a call. Called them to follow up, was told they are on another job and need to come around 12 or 1, long story short, communication was bad. We waited til 1:30 for them to show up. I wasn't there for the actual move, but mom told me she paid $350 at the end. I asked why when the agreed price was 255 plus maybe 45 for the dresser, still only $300. I would think if you're late 4.5 hours, maybe you can consider moving the 6 draw dresser for free? Def not to charge more than what you said. Mom told me they told her the dresser had to go to the bedroom so they charge $50 for a flat of stairs, even though the piano was going from 1st floor to 1st floor. Next time, be upfront with ur price and commit to a time. Smh read more

I recently was shopping for a second hand piano in the bay area. While Greg is great over the phone, in practice his organizational skills are seriously lacking. Communication around scheduling was very poor requiring a lot of back and forth, ambiguity and wanting me to give up and look for another mover. There was no written documentation of pickup or delivery which made me feel very uneasy. His prices ended up being higher than other quotes I received and I saw no benefit in going through Greg. So we have this old upright piano and wanted to move it down the 20 dicey exterior steps of our old home and into our tiny garage. Simple enough feat, right? I must say; Greg McCrea has a way with a piano. I wasn't looking forward to having my antique piano moved (he estimated it to be 100 years old), but I knew it had to be done. It's an old, upright player piano and HEAVY (again, estimated to weigh around 700lbs.). When we had it moved to our old house, it took 6 strong men to do it, but Greg and his helper did it by themselves. What's that expression? "Don't work hard, work smart" and I think this is exactly what Greg does. The piano was loaded and in his van so quickly, I didn't really even have time to come out and see it being done. Another reason I chose McCrea's: he communicated very well over the phone. I talked to another piano mover in my city, but he was rather gruff. And even though the gruff guy gave me an estimate that was about $40 less, I just had a better feeling with McCrea's. My only complaint is that we had to wait an hour for him. I know time frames can be iffy and the Hubby was giving him a call as they were coming down the street. Still, I liked his efficiency so much, I have to give him 5 stars. I was very disappointed with this piano moving company. The first time they moved my piano (into my apartment), they cancelled our first appointment because they couldn't get the people to do the work. When they moved the piano in, they had quoted me one price, then said they were mistaken and charged me about $50 more. I needed to have the piano moved again and called them 3 times before getting a call back to schedule the move. I had spoken to Greg a week before and he quoted me a good price. When I called and finally spoke to him to schedule, he couldn't confirm an exact time, and would not give me the price he originally quoted. Yes, they do a good job of actually moving the piano, but I would say they are flaky business people, and not trustworthy doing business in a professional way. Call someone else. read more

Greg McCrea was extremely nice and reasonable over the phone which is why I hired them. However when Jeremy (his partner?) arrived, Jeremy reneged on the price, was extremely rude and extorted me to pay more by threatening to leave the piano in the driveway. He wouldn't take the piano up the stairs (which Greg had agreed to do) and it ended up in a house (no stairs) for more money. Moral: get the price in writing. Greg may be a decent person, but Jeremy is indecent. Beware! read more

When my grandmother gave me her spinet upright piano, I don't remember who moved it into the place I was living. But when I moved it to my next place, I chose the cheapest piano mover I could find (can't remember the name). It was just one guy, and it turned out he needed me to do half the work. It took us forever, a nail on the back of the piano tore my shirt, and worst, at one point the piano almost escaped down the hill (on Euclid Ave in Berkeley). The next time I moved, I hired a different company. I think it might have been one guy again. He didn't require my help, tear my clothes, or release the piano down a hill, but it did still seem like an arduous and lengthy process for him to get the piano moved. When I moved again, I decided to check the Berkeley Parents Network recommendations for a different company, and that where I heard about McCrea's. What a difference! These guys are like chefs versus home cooks. The first time they moved my piano, I was almost stunned how quickly and easily they did the job. I've now had them move my piano a few times (I move a lot - most recently a couple weeks ago). Key characteristic every time: - Easy to talk with about pricing and availability - Two movers - Prompt and professional - Fast - Made it look easy (and the one time it didn't look easy, on a tricky staircase, they were still calm and confident) - Made it look safe (for them, the piano, and the floor, walls, etc.) I don't mean to say that there are no other good piano movers, just that my earlier experiences made me all the more grateful and impressed by McCrea's.
