EVERYTHING was Incredible! First,yes the work is aesthetically gorgeous. And they cleaned up the yard so all looks pristine before they leave. But they also go above and beyond. They answered all our questions about growth, regrowth, and everything in between. I had a huge tree fall around 6:30 pm and Luis at Affordable Tree Care was the only one I called which said he could get me people same day. They showed up within an hour with ropes, huge chain saws and chipper machine / truck. The tree had fallen on electrical wires and was barely being held up by a fence and a corner of the roof. Poor pruning per arborist * Many large branches have been removed, leaving a very open canopy. * Most of the foliage is concentrated at the ends of branches. * The tree has a somewhat "lion-tailed" appearance (foliage only at branch tips), which is generally not ideal for tree structure. * I don't see obvious signs of fatal decline, but I do see stress from the heavy thinning. For a mature ginkgo, a good pruning usually: * Removes dead, crossing, or damaged branches. * Maintains a balanced canopy. * Removes no more than about 15-25% of the live canopy in a single year. Your tree looks like considerably more than that may have been removed. What I would do now * Do not prune it again this summer. * Deep water during hot Los Angeles weather. * Apply 2-3 inches of mulch under the canopy (keep it away from the trunk). * Let it regrow for at least a full season before considering more pruning. One thing I'm concerned about The sparse foliage could be from: 1. Heavy pruning alone, or 2. Heat/water stress, or 3. A root issue. Has this ginkgo always had a thin canopy, or was it full and leafy before the pruning? If you have a photo from last year (or a wider photo showing the whole tree and trunk), I can tell you whether the problem is mainly the pruning or whether the tree was already declining. read more
