This is a juried event, so artists apply and a jury reviews and selects about 200+ artists to display and sell their impressive work. There is always a featured artist whose art is displayed on an event poster and a t-shirt for that spring or fall event. I can't usually afford any of the professional art pieces that sell for thousands of dollars, but I can always get the $20 t-shirt with a replica of one of the pieces of the featured artist. Some artists are aware that not everyone can afford the original on canvas, so they make smaller giclées that are more affordable for the masses. Even if you don't have the money or space in your place to buy, you can come and look for FREE! There is no cost to enter the festival. Plus, there are two stages of live music being performed all day Saturday and Sunday. Even parking is free across the street at the Richardson High School. You can also park in the neighborhood, but it isn't necessarily more convenient. Food often includes a few local places like Tongue and Cheek ice cream as well as a Gyro place. Of course you can also find a Fletcher's corn dog, and you didn't even have to drive to Fair Park for the State Fair. I love this festival and will always make a point of going and supporting artists if I can.

This year was the only exception. It looks like all the pricing rose out of our budget. But we still enjoy visiting all the booths especially the talented student artists, and seeing the live music. Park over at the school and take the free shuttle! Enjoy some delicious local beer while you browse!

I had to have the paintings professionally restored by a conservator with expertise in delicate Asian paper. Although I ended up using a different frame shop, they were always fair and reimbursed me for the costs. I wish them well and would use them in the future.

Kelly's Art Shack is a trendy art studio in the middle of Historic Downtown McKinney…read more This kid-friendly space has activities like video games, board games and even cornhole out on the beautiful courtyard (decorated completely by the owner, Kelly, herself) that is attached to the gallery. I loved relaxing here with co-workers in the evening, not to mention that view of the McKinney water tower from the patio at night cannot be beat. I highly recommend coming to see the unique artwork. My favorite piece was a large, canvas painting of "Woodstock '69," so as soon as I saw it, I had to take home the original before there were only prints available. The art is so affordable and better yet, when you purchase one you become an "artster," which comes with membership benefits. I can't wait for the next live music show and I am hoping to attend a paint party soon. I may even try to book this event space for my toddler's birthday party!

A cluster of figures in the front has provocative signs of the "We all bleed the same color" ilk. Yard signs are that bitter pill we must swallow. Who wants to be lectured by a child? There is a nice air-conditioned house that has nihilist paintings and, (oddly) a couple of very good realism paintings on the floor leaning against the wall. The garden is very peaceful and interesting with a good selection of well maintained Texas flora. Benches along the trail make for a nice pause in the walk to enjoy the scenes. There are also some nice tables and chairs about for a group of 4 if you want to bring your lunch or playing cards. Faceless statues and some broken abstracts of people are about the grounds. This is a great place to read a book. I suggest Ivan Turgenev's book Fathers and Sons. It is the story of a son who brings home his school chum from Moscow to meet his parents who live a simple life in the country with simple Russian values. The son is mesmerized by the seeming brilliance of his nihilist friend who confides about a conversation he had with an older woman: "'Of course, you can't understand me; we belong,' I said, 'to two different generations.' She was dreadfully offended, while I thought, 'There's no help for it. It's a bitter pill, but she has to swallow it.' You see, now, our turn has come, and our successors can say to us, 'You are not of our generation; swallow your pill.'"

The artwork was priced pretty high, but they seemed to have some great sales on many of their pieces. (They were still a little pricey for my current budget though!) Worth stopping in even if just to window shop!
