Went to the orchard on a beautiful fall day and many people had the same idea. Overall, the things I liked is that they had a large selection of pick your own apples, a hayride to access those apples, one of the better petting zoos ive seen at similar places and a large playground that would do well for kids of all ages. The parts I didnt like is that even though the food selection was quite poor and the wait was even worse. I would definitely eat beforehand. We picked some delicious KinderKrisp apples at Afton which were sweet and crisp but the other apples we picked were not nearly as flavorful or were mealy. The concessions options were a bit underwhelming and we ended up waiting in line for an hour for a hotdog and walking taco. I did enjoy the hay ride which took us around the orchard to different areas to pick. I also appreciated the wide array of animals in the petting area. The country store had a good variety of treats and we ended up taking home some apple butter and apple cider. It was a fun way to spend an afternoon but I'm not sure if I would return to this particular orchard. read more

We wanted to take advantage of the nice weather and spend a Sunday outside as a family so we decided to head over to Afton Apple Orchard. When you first walk up there is a long series of windows where you can taste the apple varietals and then pick up your clear bags for apple picking as well as plastic dishes for picking raspberries. At no point is there any signage or instructions that you should pick apples first or that you must pay for your raspberries before going to pick apples. (this matters for later) Once you pay to enter Afton Apple Orchard there are signs that say that you must pay before eating apples and that they reserve the right to inspect backpacks and strollers. Okay, fine, I get it. You want people to pay for what they pick before they leave or eat any of it. Totally makes sense. So we walk in and my daughters immediately want to pick raspberries, which are in a field right next to the gate. So we spend a half hour picking raspberries and fill two of the plastic dishes, which have no lids. Then we decide to go pick apples. The thing about Afton Apple Orchards is that it's huge (over 200 acres) and you really do need to ride on the hay ride if you want to make it out to the orchards. Also, at this point, I assumed that it was okay to pay for everything we picked at the end IE the raspberries and apples together. So we get on the hayride, which is packed with about 60 people and a woman rushes over and yells at the driver to stop because we have raspberries on the hayride and raspberries are NOT allowed on the hayride. So we get off the hayride. So we're already embarrassed because we just got pulled off the hayride in front of a 100+ people, but we're good sports. Again THERE ARE NO SIGNS that say you can't take raspberries on the hayride, but I'm like - oh, they probably don't want raspberries flying everywhere on the hayride - again, totally get it. Again, at this point no sign or employee has told us that we have to pay for these raspberries before we pick apples, the lady just said no open raspberry containers on the hayride. So, I'm like, I have a solution! I'll just use one of the apple-picking bags to put the raspberries in and put them in my backpack so they don't spill on the hayride. That seems like a solution that is in the spirit of not spilling raspberries all over their hayride or apple orchard. So I put the raspberries in my backpack, in front of 100+ people, mind you. I wasn't being sneaky about it AT ALL. And we go back to wait for the next hayride. At this point a burly ginger man lumbers over to me and says, "Hey, what did you do with those raspberries?" ME: I put them in my backpack Burley Ginger: Did you pay for them? ME: Um, no, I didn't realize I was supposed to. Burley Ginger: You have to pay for them before you go to the orchard. Putting them in your backpack without paying makes it look like you're trying to steal them. ME: *Gobsmacked* Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry. I'm happy to pay for them before we pick apples. I just assumed that we pay for everything we pick at the end. Burley Ginger: No, you need to pay for those before you pick apples. Otherwise it looks like you're stealing them. ME: *getting angry and incredibly insulted* Okay, I'm happy to pay for them, but how was I supposed to know that I need to pay for them before picking apples? We exchange a few more words. Burley Ginger is starting to walk away My husband at this point interjects, "Some signage around here would be helpful." Burley Ginger turns back around and gets in my husband's face. Burley Ginger: *Getting louder and more agro* Look! I'm just following company policy!! My husband reiterates that it's not clear what the company policy is and it's rude to accuse us of stealing. Burley Ginger: I'm not accusing you of stealing! ME: You told me three times that it looks like I was stealing. Burley Ginger: I'm not yelling! I'm not really sure why he needed to insist that he wasn't yelling. Neither my husband nor I accused him of yelling. Honestly, the whole interaction was so bizarre and horrible customer service. And this exchange, again, took place in front of at least 60 people waiting for the next hayride so I was mortified. I didn't want this to happen to anybody else so I went into the retail store and asked to speak to a manager. I told her what had happened without naming the employee and pointed out that they have a system problem if people have no idea what your company policies are. She told me that the day before they had people stealing from them left and right, which is why they had to put up the signs saying that they have the right to search strollers and backpacks, but even those signs are confusing because they're on the gate when you enter, so I assumed it was more like a security thing. Anyway, I let her know what a terrible experience I had, she seemed slightly comforting but ambivalent at best and now we'll never go back. read more

Went to the Afton Apple Orchard for their strawberry picking. The farm is nicely run, has tracker ride, animal petting zoo, a playground (didn't see, but saw it on the website). The strawberries we picked was overly ripe as the time of the year, they are nicely looking. One suggestion is to have more checking out lines as the farm was very busy and the check out waiting time was quite long. read more

I'll start by saying the staff is incredibly welcoming and friendly! They make you feel like family and like you're truly apart of their farm/orchard. Their orchard is set up into sections, for apple picking. The apples are paid based on weight of your apples after picking. There is an entrance fee to pick apples and get into the pumpkin patch. They have a good selection of regular orange pumpkins as well as some other cool white, green, warty pumpkins, and some others. They have a sample table inside the apple house to try the apples before picking. There is a hayride tractor that takes you to the apples. Inside their store they have jams, apple and peach butters, frozen baked goods, fudge, some gourds, baking mixes, and some other goodies. The apple crisp and apple raspberry crisps are delicious! So crispy, fresh, and yummy! My fiancé planned a whole proposal here and the staff was very great at helping him plan and execute his proposal. They also have some cute photo opportunities like the giant rocking chair, a a swing, and much more. We will be returning to pick more apples! read more

We have been here two years now. The first time we went there was no one there and it was great! This year we went later in the year and it was packed, which wasn't as fun. They charge an entrance fee, even for babies, which I thought was crazy. There are other places that don't charge an entrance fee at all so not sure we will go back here next year. They have hay rides, petting zoo, a store to buy products, and on the weekends more family entertainment. This year there was a line to go into the store so we did not go in this year. The hay ride was nice. The drivers are very friendly and pick you up if you're walking, not just at the ride spots, which is nice. It was just so over crowded this year that we probably only spent an hour since there was a line for everything and we had a little baby with us. There is only one way in and out which caused a bottle neck, also very annoying. Overall, if you go earlier in the fall it's not as crowded and is more fun. But I really think it's stupid they charge an entrance fee for babies. Also, not as fun when it is over crowded. I think there are better places out there. read more

We came here in July to pick strawberries and had a great time. The staff were kind and were able to get us situated with a box. You then can either ride on the tractor or walk to the picking fields. A staff member directed us where to pick the berries and gave us a flag to mark where we stopped. Pricing was reasonable and the strawberries tasted great. We came during strawberry season. It was our first time here and didn't know what to expect. It was a little confusing where to park. Keep an eye out for the signs! The first employee welcoming everyone wasn't very helpful. She didn't explain what we were suppose to do until we asked. It was just a short walk to the strawberry fields where you meet someone else to show you where to go. They provided the containers and knee pads you need. The strawberries were very tasty. They had some goats to feed and pet next to the strawberries. Afterwards, you walk back and can enjoy some icecream and simple meals like hotdogs. That's where you pay for the amount of strawberries you pick as well. It's a good place for the kiddos and it's short-lived. You don't need to be there all day so it's nice for the kiddos that get bored quickly. I wish there were a little more things to do like a playground or hay rides. Such a fun place to go! No sun since it has been very rainy lately but that made it so much better, still humid but did not have to worry about getting sunburned! Small shack was clean and had more products to purchase (honey, jam, butter) we Walked in and got a box then we walked to the field and started picking! This place was cute but very racist I do not recommend coming here if you are not white me and my friend couldn't even make it through the door with our service dog (which they do allow .. tells you on the door) we weren't allowed to show no paperwork for our small dog the lady and sheriff asked us some questions about the animal and still turned us away we are both black coming into a predominantly white town and have not experienced much like this before . Visiting Afton was super fun! Parking was easy. I went in to buy admission. The kids went to the playground first. They had a lot of fun! It was so many things to do. We then got on the hayride to go to the apple orchard. It was very confusing to understand which hayride went to which apples. Maybe I just had the one driver that skip stops. But hence the 4 stars. How Do You Like Them Apples? Admission: $5.00 per adult, $4 per child Activities: Apple and berry picking, tractor ride, corn maze, retread tower, straw tower, slides, swings, jump pad, petting zoo, Moo Moo Choo Choo train, and cider sampling. After the permanent closing of Nesbitt's Happ-E-Hill this year, my sister and I visited Afton instead with my two nephews. Unfortunately, the disorganization and crazy crowds we encountered at this orchard squashed some of the enjoyment for us adults. Build in time for parking, because traffic came to a dead standstill for us about two miles away from the orchard. A lack of parking attendants and signage when entering the orchard caused further delay and chaos. DEJA QUEUE The entrance line was the next apple of discord. Oh my gourd, what a mess wading through tangles of lines for purchases, apple tasting, snack orders, pumpkin carts, and stragglers not knowing where to go to pay for admission. Why not utilize a punch card system instead with just one line to pay for everything at the end of your visit? "I HAVEN'T GOT A BRAIN...ONLY STRAW." (WIZARD OF OZ) The playground was set up nicely with enough swings and slides to accommodate the swarming mass of kiddos. However, there were safety issues, the main one being an unstable, drooping tower of straw bales. "Play at your own risk" sign aside, there shouldn't be stations that dangerous for small kids in the first place. UPSETTING THE APPLE CART The wheeled carts used to transport pumpkins and apples were lined up by the main building instead of right by the pumpkins. If you missed them when you first walked in, you wouldn't have a direct line of view from the pumpkins. There was an abundance of both gigantic and cute mini pumpkins, though sadly no trace of the Great Pumpkin. Sorry Linus! YOU'RE THE APPLE OF MY PIE The only place to purchase food and drinks was in the congested main building. No outside drinks were allowed in the orchard, so a concession stand with cups of cider for sale up by the picnic tables and petting zoo would have been a welcome addition. From the main store we purchased gallons of cider and frozen pies that were delicious and appeeling once baked at home. BUT FIRST, LLAMA TAKE A SELFIE With all our complaints, we did enjoy the goats and llamas at the petting zoo, along with some peaceful and fruitful raspberry picking. We left with a nice mix of tart and sweet pink, red, and yellow raspberries. Do grab clear containers in the main building ahead of your field time! At its core, this orchard has all the bones for a first rate customer experience. But the layout and payment process need to be streamlined, and more safety measures need to be implemented. I give the orchard three straw bales, though the three-year-old nephew would have awarded five stars and two raspberry-stained high fives. read more

My first time at Afton - my friends and I usually go to Aamodt's in Stillwater, but we wanted to try a different orchard this year. I was shocked at how crowded it was and there weren't much apples available to pick! There were penty of raspberries and pumpkins though, so it would be good if you like raspberries or you're into carving pumpkins. We had heard the highlight of this apple farm was the sunflower field, but there weren't any sunflowers as most of them were dead :-( Since none of us go any apples, pumpkins or raspberries, not sure how much it is cost wise, but I heard pricey. The highlight of the visit was the free tractor hayride, which was nice break from walking. There were also lots of farm animals (goats, roosters, pigs, etc) for petting for the kiddies. read more

Afton Apple Season is a whole-day fun affair for the family. They have a creative playground for the kids to play on. Johnny Combine is a giant play structure for those kids obsessed with trucks. I have never been to an apple farm before and wanted to get in an apple picking experience this fall. We had a really nice day during our family outing. The gals that stamped our hands at the gate were very welcoming and friendly, the driver on our hay ride was also very nice in communicating with us during the ride and the stops. The playground is huge and the farm animals are very sweet. It was so fun watching the baby goats play on the little plastic slide. We even had a bit of time to pick some raspberries before we left. The apple cider is very good, I bought a gallon from the shop. It has more of a spice kick to it than I'm used to in California. They also have an array of different butters, jams, sauces, along with home decor, kitchen gadgets and other gifts. This is definitely a great place to visit for your traditional fall activities. Visited Afton with my family to get our hands on as many apples as we could carry. Because of Covid, a lot of the typical things were not available BUT they still had the ability to grab samples (pre cut and on a toothpick so you only touch the one you're grabbing). There were less people as well but it was also on a week day, so who knows. The apples were still great and they had pretty good availability. My whole family was really happy with our visit to Afton Apple Orchard. This was our first ever visit to an apple farm, so I don't have much else to compare it to (other than childhood visits to the pumpkin patch and Christmas tree farm), but as an overall experience, it was a lot of fun. Here's why: 1) There's a lot to do! You can sample all kinds of apples and apple products, including about 8 different varieties of apples, apple butter, apple cider, apple pastries, and a lot more. You can later shop for both these and other apple related foods. You can take a hay ride around the farm, stopping to pick your own apples (off of trees), as well as pumpkins. You can watch apple cider being pressed. You can enjoy all kinds of playground equipment (but you might look a bit weird if you aren't a kid), and pet different barnyard animals at a petting zoo. You can try to tackle the huge corn maze. You can eat your fill of apple-related lunch items, including an excellent bratwurst, apple fritter, and apple/pumpkin donuts. 2) The prices are super reasonable! I'm not sure who all these other people are who are complaining about the cost of admission (just $5 for adults), but we thought that all the attractions were well worth the paltry gate price. Additionally, the cost of apples and all the other food items (as well as most of the souvenirs) were extremely reasonable. If you don't believe me, just take a look at all the food we enjoyed for around $20 in one of my photos below. 3) The parking is ample, the atmosphere is very "fall festive," the staff is friendly, and the farm is easy to navigate. 4) There are really only two downsides: 1) The bathroom facilities are "porta potties," which are a bit cramped/dirty and not heated, with hand washing stations that are not kept stocked with soap/towels and have very cold water. 2) The lines to both order lunch and pay for apples/souvenirs were very long. Overall, we had a fun experience picking apples and enjoying all of the attractions at the farm. Even with the couple small downsides, I would still recommend Afton as a great fall experience. read more

What a great spot, there's a lot of apple orchards in the metro, but you really should stop by Afton if you have kids. $5 per person admission and they have a giant playground, petting zoo and hayride. Even during Covid they were open and conducting proper safety measures. They have a great variety of apples and raspberries to pick. I brought my 5 kids aged 7 to 16 and they all enjoyed themselves. I've visited Afton several times over the years and it is definitely at the top of my favorite apple orchards in Minnesota. However, I visited this past weekend and was very disappointed to see little to no enforcement of safety measures amidst the pandemic. I am writing this review so others can make an informed choice before visiting, as I wish I knew this information before I decided to visit. It was VERY busy, there was a very long line to enter the orchard, and most people were standing closer than six feet apart. I also noticed that samples were available for apple tasting. I was shocked because several people huddling together and touching the same apples and containers seems like a recipe for infection. Once we got into the orchard, we saw several people not wearing masks or wearing them improperly, and the hayride was operating at full capacity, with people sitting very close to each other. Both the playground and petting zoo were filled with people and the line to purchase apples after picking extended all the way to the petting zoo. I appreciated that staff tried to limit the number of people in the retail building, but it was still quite crowded. Overall, while I love Afton Apple, I believe that there is more they can be doing to ensure the health and safety of their staff and customers. I visited another orchard earlier this season and was impressed with how well they implemented safety procedures: forgoing the hayride and petting zoo, setting up tables outside of their retail building to purchase apples, strictly enforcing masks, and monitoring the number of people who entered the orchard at a time. I hope Afton will consider adopting these practices. read more

This place is beyond what Id imagine for an apple orchard. It was beyond a great place! My boyfriend & I got huge pumpkins for super cheap! Their apple cider is to die for & the apple butter!! The corn maze was lots of fun & had a scavenger hunt while doing it. I'd definitely recommend it! Getting apples we asked for what a good apple is to make apple pie, we got Harrelson. I haven't been to any other Apple Orchards, so I don't have much to compare to. But my experience here was nice. I came here with my girlfriend and her mom and had a good day. Afton isn't too far from the cities so location wise was pretty convenient. Parking is free and tractor that takes you around the orchard is free. There is a good variety of apples and plenty to pick from. You pay by pound and can definitely come out pretty pricey. I got Honey Gold apples. They were super sweet and good. Highly recommended. My full bag of apples came out to like 20 bucks.. Kind of expensive if you ask me, but I haven't seen Honey Gold apples much in the supermarkets. I like the Honey Gold apples more than the Honey Crisp. The honey crisp is a bit too crispy for me. There's a animal barn section which is nice for kids as well as various swings and such. read more

We love coming here in the fall! They have a wide variety of pick-your-own apples and pumpkins. They have a hay ride to get you around the property quicker, too. We don't have kids yet, but they have tons of fun activities for littlies. The only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars is that they need to expand! They only have a couple of cash registers, and the line was ~100 people long when we were there. They need to build a bigger gift shop and have more checkout lanes. When we went we had a great time. The employees were actually super happy and friendly compared to what some of these reviews seem to say. Weird. 4/5 because of prices I understand how you need to make a profit, but We essentially paid a heck of a lot more just to enter the flowers area. Sure we got great photos out of it. But at the end of it we didn't get to pick any because we had to pay even more just to take em with us. Apples were just getting going when we went so only two rows were open and two varieties. We picked 3lbs of Zestar and made them into a pie. Was easily the best apple pie i've had in my life. The tractor rides are nice. Was such a nice day albeit a little warm. Not sure we would have made it all the way back (our fault for dressing more heavily) Will come back again next year for more apples for a pie regardless of the price of the apples and skip on the flowers. read more

I was really disappointed by this place. When I asked if they allowed people to take photos (like someone wanting a photographer to come take pictures of them apple picking and STILL contributing to their business) I was told that they would rather no one take photos at their location because they feel used since they've created a beautiful environment and they don't want anyone to capture it. And the lady who told me that, was INCREDIBLY rude. I would have gladly shared some of the photos with them so they could have nice photos for their website, which is super outdated and hard to read. But they just decided they don't want any photos ever taken on their premises. I advice not whipping your phone out when you're around employees of this place, you could be accused of stealing their beautiful backdrop for your instagram posts. read more

Just wanted to let the haters here know a couple of things that they always want to complain about , the entrance fees. These fees are changed to help pay for the people that service you, operations of the orchard and most importantly for the loss of revenue with hundreds of wasted apples littering the ground because people pick, bite, and throw them on the ground. And are not charged for them. These wasted apples are just that, Wasted! They are running a business and it costs a lot of money to run, pay employees that you expect service from, yet have to take a hit from people wasting their revenue, all this to continue the business and service that you expect. You have a choice, pay the $5.00 which it's posted or turnaround and find another venue, it's pretty simple. Overall they try and make it a good experience for everyone. If you think it's so easy, open your own orchard then you can compete, and run your free entrance, no worries, rainbow, butterfly orchard. It's a business, not a free service to the public, like a park. Don't see you complaining about paying $15.00 per person to get in the State Fair, and $15.00 to park your car. What did that money get you? A shoulder to shoulder, long lines and crabby people experience? That's been my experience for the last 40 years going there. But my family still wants to go, so we do. The scenery is beautiful and the corn maze was pretty neat - but the whole experience felt pretty disjointed. If you go, try to go earlier in the day and be prepared to wait to find a parking spot. We waited for a good 15-20 minutes before we were able to pull into the lot due to the long line of cars. We paid $10 admission to the corn maze and then purchased some food to snack on. While waiting in line, there were various jams available - but when we got to the counter, we were told we had to wait in a DIFFERENT line to pay for the jam than the snack food line. That was fine, we waited in both lines, purchased our snacks and jam. When we tried to go outside to find a clear area where we could enjoy our snacks, a worker stopped our group physically - by touching one of us - which I felt was entirely inappropriate - and said we needed to pay $5 admission to the apple orchard if we wanted to come outside. It seemed strange that our maze admission, and the fact that we'd purchased food, didn't entitle us to a place to sit down. I understand these people are running a business, but the experience (especially after we'd already paid $10 per person for the maze) left a pretty bad taste in my mouth. I was really looking forward to our trip, but I don't plan on returning any time soon. Positives: The maze is a great way to spend a lazy afternoon, the concessions are fun (apple cider brats, lots of ice cream, caramel sauce, hot cider, hot chocolate), and it truly is gorgeous. We typically go to Afton Apple once a year. This year was busier than usual. There was no organization. I'll start with pros - huge playground for kiddos - feeding and petting zoo - free tractor rides Cons - ridiculously long lines - food line is the same line as apple check out line - so crowded - admission fee If you do not allow outside food and drinks, make sure u can accommodate this for your customers.
