Whistling Well Farm was the perfect spot for a laid-back fall outing! I organized a trip there with some colleagues, and it ended up being such an easy, low-stakes way to spend time together outside of work. There was plenty of space to roam through the orchard, chat, and enjoy the beautiful scenery without feeling crowded. The apple picking was great--we had no trouble finding plenty of apples--and I also loved that the farm is both dog-friendly and kid-friendly, making it a fun destination for all kinds of groups. They even had live music while we were there, which added to the relaxed, festive atmosphere. Before heading out, we stopped by the little farm store and picked up some local goodies like jams and cider. It's those extra touches that make the experience feel special. The only minor downside was that the pumpkin patch was a little sparse when we visited, but the orchard and overall atmosphere more than made up for it. Simple. Keep this word in mind as you travel to Whistling Well Farm. If you are seeking out a state fair experience or something with loud and boisterous events, this is not it. Contrary it's every reason why we enjoyed it. Highlights include: dog friendly, nice parking, friendly staff, proficient store with basic items such as honey, caramel, chocolate covered cherries, plush dog toys, coloring books, apples, etc. Outside you will find a pumpkin patch, goats and even a DJ with a dance floor. If you have kids, this is a great outing for the family. My group walked our dogs around the space, split come apple cider donuts and snapped a few pics by some of the fall decor. Notes: dogs are not allowed in the gift shop and there is a food stand that serves hot dogs, cider, chips and apple cider donuts. We did not see any alcohol onsite. read more

Such a great apple orchard! If you're looking for a place to take in the sights, eat delicious apples and shop for goods without having to navigate through crowds and struggle to park; this is the place! Only PYO Haralson's were advertised today, but we scored some delicious Honeycrisp apples (had to reach high). The food products are plentiful and almost everyone there had a half gallon of apple cider in their hands. I didn't buy any today, but I did last year and it was delicious. I didn't buy any buy three sweatshirts, which were modestly priced at $25. I highly recommend trying this spot out. read more

Pumpkins, apples, and mums the word. It's no secret that Whistling Well is the place to go for all three. While you're at it grab some pie, honey, Apple juice, or even a book or two. Yes, this farm will grow on you. I think this is our seventh year harvesting produce. We come for the pumpkins and the you pick apples. Yep, you get to pick your own apples. If you don't feel like picking the apples yourself, you may be able to find one of those folks who squeezed through the wall to do the heavy lifting. I understand that they're everywhere. This year we bought nine pumpkins. We found the perfect ones in the field. They were on the small side, so we went over by the chickens where the big ones were and picked up a couple of those too. We pretty much filled the wagon that they have for us pumpkin hoarders. You'll find yourself paying a bit more than you would at a grocery store, but you can't put a price on memories. Even if one of those memories is sheep slobbering all over your hands. Don't worry, there's a wash station. Those germs will fall right off the hands and end up where they're supposed to be. On your shoes! Have fun and don't chase the chickens. Quick Tip: Although they have some of the most perfect pumpkins, seek out the mangled ones too. It was into October and I still hadn't had my bag of Haralson apples, my absolute favorite, so I did a quick search and Whistling Well Farms popped up. The drive there was stunning. Rolling farmland and beautiful scenic fields of trees changing color. My visit was during a raining morning but it did not diminish the beauty. When I arrived at the farm it was a weekday on a rainy morning so very quiet. My pup and I walked around the grounds and checked out the farm structures, colorful mums and pumpkins, and enjoyed the country scenery. I bought my bag of Haralsons as well as an acorn squash and a jar of honey. Apples were yummy, tart and crisp the way I love them. Staff was very friendly and welcoming. It has been a family tradition to go apple and pumpkin picking for years and years now and tbh, we go to another family farm down the street 'st Croix farm' but this year, they are closed so we decided to go to whistling wells. It was ok. Nothing special, just ok. Maybe it was because when we visited in mid October, they were completely out of the apples, so there was nothing to pick :( There were some good pumpkins there so we were able to pick those as well as grab some bagged apples and cider from their store. Wish they had a hot food option and not just bagged chips and pop. The plus side is that it is free unlike afton apple where you pay a price to enter. There are some animals and you can roam in the chicken coop to feed the chickens. There is live music there in sept-Oct, so check their event calendar if you are wanting some free entertainment. read more

Food: In addition to apples and apple related treats, they also have hot dogs and brats. They were marinated/grilled in some sort of apple cider which was extremely tasty. Venue: Decent sized apple orchard and pumpkin patch with a variety of other activities. There's an adorable little donkey to visit, as well as some chickens and goats. After grabbing lunch or an apple treat, there's plenty of outdoor picnic table seating. Experience: The apples had been fairly picked over by the time that we went in October which felt a little strange. However, the apples were still tasty and juicy. The atmosphere was fun and family friendly with there being plenty of activities for the family to enjoy and even more photo ops! This orchard is the perfect way to spend the day with your family. A massive, and I do mean massive playground, a petting zoo, a hayride, and of course APPLES!! I have a high risk toddler and appreciated that they truly enforced wearing masks on the hay ride during the pandemic. We made an entire day of it. We ordered delicious food such as apple cider brats, apple doughnuts, and so much more, all of which was delicious. You have the ability to pick your own apples, or buy them by the bag. My top three favorite apples were the: honey gold, honey crisp, and sweet 16. I do suggest taking the hay ride to the apples as it can be quite a hike, but if you love long gorgeous walk in deliciously apple scented groves, this will make your dreams come true. I've been to a number of farms/orchards in Minnesota now, and this is about as lovely and traditional as it gets. There are many things I appreciate about a farm in the fall. One is the general ambiance and feeling I get when I step onto the premises. Here, we were greeted with a staffed information table and a smile, rather than a ticket booth, pricelist and lines. That is because unlike most farms in Minnesota, this one is FREE. . Another factor that makes for a great farm experience is having fun and engaging activities for the kids. Whistling Well gives its visitors free corn to feel the chickens and turkeys in the coop. We all had a great time entering the coop and hand-feeding and petting the colorful birds. Then it was off to the donkey and goat pen, where the docile animals spent time by the fence, sharing their love with the kids. Whistling Well had a live country/folk bank playing on banjo and other traditional instruments, with a stage area for the young ones to bang away at their own instruments. To the north of this activity center were wagons that took you down into the world of pumpkins and a field of dig your own mums. On the south side were the apple orchards, which we didn't try. The final thing I appreciate about a farm is the general maintenance. The fields were beautifully plowed, colorful and accessible. The barn was new and still smelled of fresh wood. The shoppe was quaint, clean and efficient. Finally, the price was right. While mums were a bit on the expensive side at $7 a plant, the pumpkins were only .37 cents a pound, with small and mini pumpkins at $1.99 per item. I left with three large pumpkins, a few medium sized, four small pumpkins and a handful of gourds and squash for only $33. I recommend this place to anybody who needs a fall getaway. The farm is right in the St. Croix River valley and is a stone's throw from the quaint all-American town of Afton, MN. read more

A lovely location open to the public. It is like taking a little trip to Grandma's house. A wonderful adventure to take your city slicker kidlets to on a nice fall day. It's free. You will of course want to purchase something from the store or get a bag and pick your own apples. They give you chicken feed and the little ones can go right on in with the birds and feed them. You will have to clean their shoes of course afterwards so be warned. They have a nice grey Donkey and who does not love donkeys. They have recently added two pygmy goats that are adorable. They have a mascot dog that is hanging around and even has merchandise like stuffed animals and a kids storybook written about her. There are several tables and chairs to sit at an relax while you bask in the fabulous fall air. It was wonderful! read more

Great place to take your kids for apple picking. Great bang for your bucks. There is no entry-admission fee to go pick your own apples or you can buy the pre-picked one. One cons is, they don't have a lot of rows so you have to go early in the season to get the best apple of the season or else you get what's left. Went here for some apple picking with the family on a Saturday morning. It's a very cute place! The orchard/trees and apples were in great shape! The fruit looked good, nothing rotting etc. it was clean and the trees were labeled. We bought a peck of mixed apples for $25. The apples were absolutely delicious and I can't wait to make some pies. The store was cute, although I wish there were more options. It was advertised they had apple cider donuts, but that was not the case. We were disappointed by that. Wish I would have took more pictures here. This is a beautiful farm/orchard! They have these great red wagons to carry around kids and pumpkins, the have pumpkins galore to pick from, the have several kinds of apples including Honeycrisp! We went on a Saturday and it wasn't overcrowded, it was just right! They also had hotdogs and cider to munch on. They also have a HUGE area for parking. Another customer there commented on that the lines to buy apples were loooong over at Afton apple orchard. There was almost no wait at all here! There is also turkeys chickens, a donkey, and goats. This is a wonderful little apple orchard. It is very family oriented. They have chickens, turkeys, a donkey (very friendly) and a plethora of dogs. You can even bring your own dog. The weather and disease have not been kind this year. The apples on the east side of the trees were damaged by hail and the raspberry plants failed :( As we came later in the season, we picked over a lot of seconds, but still good apples. We also picked up some wonderful cider and a couple of mums. The prices are on par with other orchards, although they all seem a little high to me. The grounds are very nice and so are the staff. They were very busy today, so service could've been better but I understand why it wasn't. The band was a nice touch. I'll be back next year. read more

Of the 5 rows full of rotten apples, we were able to pick and sample 2 unmarred pieces of fruit. Apparently there was a really (not) awesome hail storm back in June and it ruined this years crop. So much for newlywed romantic gallivanting amongst the cortland trees. I'm sure this place is hella awesome when you can pick. The help was very nice and their general store was pretty cute. After a not as long as it seemed drive out to Whistling Well Farm, we arrived on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. After some direction from the staff, we waked down to the well kept orchard where lo and behold, the bounty of apples were had. Despite the frosty weather last spring and drought this summer, the trees were teaming with acceptable apples ready for picking. Back at the farm house, the staff was friendly and responsive. We didn't take advantage of the petting zoo or opportunity to feed the chickens, but had fun just the same. It was not crowded despite the warm afternoon and, as mentioned by other reviewers, there were no additional fees. One thing that could have been better would have been if they had prepicked apples for sale at the farm house. Well, I didn't ask so perhaps they were sold out. We'll definitely be back next year. read more

A group of girlfriends and I come to this farm every fall for apple picking. It is absolutely lovely - very picturesque, friendly people, adorable animals and great apples. I'd suggest calling them earlier in the season to ask when would be the best time to come for pick-your-own. We love that while the farm is family-friendly for sure, we as adults can still have a nice time and not have to wait in lines to get in, etc. For kids (and also myself, as I can't resist cute animals) they have a very cute petting zoo and some funny photo boards, pumpkins and plenty of room to run around. Last time we went there were also very cute little kittens running around. I think they might have some kind of wagon-y ride out to the orchard, but it's really not a far walk at all. I think the fact that our group of grown ladies makes the effort to come here every year says something about the great customer service and experience that Whistling Well Farm provides - we really enjoy it! read more

We had a great day at two Orchards near Afton today-the first location was fun for the kids but commercialized (chaotic/expensive/long lines) so we drove 3 minutes down the road to Whistling Well Farm for a more relaxed experience. The weather was stellar today so there were plenty of people here (which the friendly teen parking guide confirmed), but it didn't have a "State Fair" ambiance like the other place. The kids loved sitting in the adorable red wagons for the brief walk to the orchard. There were plenty of apples to pick, although the lines of trees weren't labeled (at least not that we saw). We taste tested one which was crisp and pleasantly tart so we filled up a bag then when we paid for them we found out that they're Haralsons, mmm. The apple store also sells Abdallah caramel dip so naturally we had to buy that(six single serving containers, perfect!). The total was $14, very reasonable considering there was no admission fee here. They had an ample supply of pre-picked apples if you're just stopping by quick. There was also a kettle corn stand and concessions with picnic tables nearby. The farm animals looked happy and well cared for, kids are welcome to explore the chicken coop. This place is great but don't tell TOO many people because we don't want it tochange into something grander than the cute farm that it is! read more

Sometimes you just gotta take a breather, and get out in the country, even if it's just 20 minutes from Maplewood, ya know? Saw this place on the way to Afton Apples, and had to stop...and to be honest, I liked it much better. Less commercial, smaller, and we had a great talk with the owner. We came on a cold gray day, and we weren't planning to do any picking, so we bought a few bags of apples, ( a bag of Honeycrisps, and another bag with a mix of apples for sauce and pies) and planned on calling it a day, but ended up loading ourselves up with raspberry jam and caramel sauce also... They had lots of great stuff for sale, as well as a corn maze (which is the stuff my nightmares are made of...I get lost finding my car, so doing it on purpose is a horrible idea...) I think there were turkeys and goats as well. We didn't pick our own, but they had wagons and a great set up to do so..I'm not sure about hayrides though. .It was free and a simply lovely little farm. We'll be back next fall. read more

Beautiful orchard run by great folks. A couple friends and I had fun picking apples, playing with the farm dog, sampling the hot apple cider, and taking in the gorgeous views. The best part of Whistling Well, though, is the people! We were greeted when we entered and they gave us all sorts of info about their farm and where we'd have the best luck finding apples this late in the season. I later discovered I lost a significant amount of cash while picking apples. Luckily, someone found it and turned it in the next day. I got a call from Charlie right away, and he even offered to send a check for the amount in the mail so that I wouldn't have to make the trek back out to the farm. Since I don't own a car (a friend had driven us out there) this made a big difference! Wishing Well farm is the only place I'll be picking apples from here out, and I can't wait to check them out at the St Paul Farmer's Market! read more

After finding Whistling Well Farms' orchard on Orange Pippin, my friend and I decided to make a visit. We were greeted by a farm house, barns, a petting zoo, and a young lady who explained how the apple picking process worked. We made our way to the trees and to our surprise (the orchard we had gone to down the road had trees very sparse with apples) these trees were loaded with what we were looking for! Long story short, we really enjoyed it. The reason I write this review:there was a mishap with my credit card when purchasing. Since then, the owner has been in constant contact with me doing everything to resolve the issue. We will be going back to Whistling Wells for years to come. read more

These apples are the best of those sold at St Paul Farmers Market....if they are not at the market, I don't buy apples. The apples are delicious, juicy and not perfect (perfect apples have much pesticide used). These lovely farmers are in the business of re defining what an apple tastes like (daughter's sorority, my work, neighbors are all shocked at how delicious they actually are). So excited to have these treats again, they are so great for you but delicious also!! read more

So friendly and beautiful -- lots of places for photos -- my daughter even had some of her senior pictures taken hear -- love the apple butter and if your lucky they will have kettle corn on the day you visit. What a great little apple orchard! I had been there a couple of times years before and really like the friendly small town feel of the place. Last week, I took my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter there and found out that it was the first day to pick honeycrisp apples. What? They let you pick honeycrisp? What other orchard lets you do that? They don't have hayrides (that's okay, who needs to sit on a wagon behind a loud exhaust spewing tractor anyway?) but they have wagons with a bed of straw in them, perfect to pull the little ones and to carry back your load of apples. The apples were delicious and the price was surprisingly really good (certainly cheaper than store-bought ones, only these are fresh off the trees). There are some farm animals such as a donkey, chickens and some turkeys. They have cracked corn for the kids to feed the chickens and my granddaughter loved it. They also have pumpkins and squash as well as jams and other goodies for sale. Even better, no admission charge, unlike a certain orchard just down the road. This will be our go-to-place to pick apples. read more
