Stayed in room 24 for two nights. The fresh breakfast in the morning was great! The customer service was the best! Peggy at the front desk was so helpful, very polite and professional! She helped me charge my phone twice as I didn't have a charger. She helped clear my plates at breakfast. She even went above and beyond and got my son a cracker to eat while we waited for the phone to charge back in. We tried the food from their restaurant and it was all divine. The kids Mac and cheese was not KRAFT and had an amazing cheese pull and taste. Justin made sure we were taken care of right away on a busy night. Peggy was telling me how Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn have stayed at the Inn. My room specifically was small but I didn't need more than what I had. Went to the Afton house for thanksgiving buffet first time yesterday and was quite pleased. Although it was more pricey than I'm used to paying, $42/ person, they had quite a good spread of hot and cold dishes, and desserts. we had a late afternoon rez, food was tasty and very well cooked - maybe with the exception of the turkey that was a little dry and rolls stale. by that time. Attended Mother Day buffet. Initial welcoming staff member was wonderful and helpful as our group had never been there before. The food was ok, nothing special -typical buffet. I would not consider it to be a fine dining experience. My daughter scraped the sides of the cheesy hash brown tray. The attending staff member said "0h yeah we need more" The buffet was way overpriced and logistically looked and felt a little chaotic. Our server was pleasant but expressed that she was really not a server but someone they pulled in because they needed staff. Probably didn't need to share that. My family went here for Mother's Day brunch, and a buffet was offered. At $42 a person, I had high expectations. Boy was I disappointed. This is worse than hotel food. I would have rather gone to McDonalds. The eggs were fake, the beef had been sitting for hours, the salad was tasteless, the hash soggy. I ate half of one plate and had to be done. The inside feels like a business office from the 90's that someone tried to give a facelift as cheap as possible. I was hoping to have a nice Easter brunch with my family, and Afton House Inn kept on coming up on several lists of popular holiday brunches. I was also impressed with the large selection of gluten-free dishes, so we made the 30 minute drive from the Twin Cities. Although some of the food items on the buffet were pretty decent, this was honestly one of the tackiest buffets I've ever seen. Most things were served in plastic containers, and all of their baked goods looked like they came from a box. The plastic trays of cheese and crackers and fruit were honestly embarrassing. As mentioned in other reviews, the buffet gets picked over very quickly, and they do nothing to make it look presentable again. If you are looking for a nice holiday, brunch buffet, this is not the place. read more

My husband and I stayed here one night just for a weekday get away. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. We had drinks at the bar and moved to a booth for dinner in The Current restaurant. They have an interesting (in a good way!) variety of craft cocktails and a decent wine list. Wayne, our bartender and server, was friendly. We shared the turkey wraps which were delicious! They were complimented by a flavorful Asian sauce. and some hot sauce for a little kick. For dinner, my husband had the BBQ ribs which were tasty and I had the Chicken Apple Brie sandwich which was good but the chicken was a tad dry. Neither was anything to write home about but no complaints here. The prices are exceptionally reasonable. We stayed the night in room 24 which was much smaller than the website made it look. The carpet is very worn and needs updating. While the bed was clean, the pillows really need to be changed out. I'm glad I brought my own. The linens were clean which accentuated the seemingly dirty pillows which were yellow from age and wear. I know this place is quite old but there was a musty odor. As in other reviews, the walls are paper thin. We were on the end of the hall nearest the stairs in the lobby and we could hear talking downstairs. We had a lovely breakfast that was tasty and very hearty. We each had an omelet, four sausages, toast, very fresh fruit, and coffee, all which was included in the price of the room. Overall, we enjoyed our stay. We do look forward to checking out one of their cruises and perhaps stay in a different room. read more

Food: We enjoyed a mid-day snack at Swirl Wine Bar and loved the fondue. It's served with apples and bread, and is absolutely amazing. Their breakfast buffet had limited selection and nothing was amazing. Venue: The room had a queen bed and huge Jacuzzi tub which was one of the selling points for us. However, the TV was incredibly old and we could barely even hear/see it from the bed and the walls were thin which meant we could hear everything happening outside our window and right outside our door in the hallways. Experience: The Jacuzzi and the fondue were the highlights of the weekend which were overshadowed by the surprisingly old, slightly dilapidated rooms and the musty smell. read more

The service was excellent our waitress was attentive and ready to make our brunch a success. The cook who prepared the food was not on the same page. The atmosphere was very nice with linen table cloths and pretty plates. The reason for two stars was bad food. Rubber pancakes an raw chicken over cooked vegetables an eggs Benedict. Our reservation was at 9am and we weren't seated until 9:15. Then when we walked to the buffet most of the items were no out. We were told if the lid is closed it's not ready yet. The dessert table was a disappointment only cake. No pies or cookies no brownies or bars. All this for the price of 25.00 per plate. What has happened to this brunch?? Took my family to Current Restaurant at the Afton House Inn for Mother's Day Brunch Buffet. Awful! Especially for $35/pp. - The "Eggs Benedict" (yes, using quotes because it was definitely NOT Eggs Benedict.) They took a piece of wheat toast and cut in quarters..where were the English muffins?? Instead of a poached egg, they had a tiny square of congealed (probably powdered) scrambled egg that was about the size of a cheese cube. Really strange...a poor man's version of what it should have been. Where are your standards? Were you proud of this dish? - The buffet was supposed to have salmon. They had blue gill instead. How is that at all on par with salmon? - The pastries and desserts were all yucky low-quality commercially made product...like the kind you get with the free breakfast at a Holiday Inn Express. I don't mind commercially made baked goods! Some are exceptional! These were not. They were bottom rung. - Everything on the buffet was always picked over and they took forever to refill the empty pans. And the food, even if it was supposedly fresh out of the kitchen, was always dried out. - Our server was nice enough, but we noted that she never asked how the food was. We can see why...she knew better and didn't want an earful. I am wondering if the restaurant actually made any of the buffet items fresh/in-house or if it was all prefab from Sysco and US Food Service. - Did I mention the scrambled eggs on the buffet caught on fire, due to overfilling the sterno cans underneath? This place was gross, there were bugs in our room, we could hear our neighbors tv very clearly and the place has not been updated at all since the early 80's. There was no way we could have slept there so we actually paid $175 for the room and drove home at midnight. For $175 our expectations were much higher, I did not say anyone was partying, your walls are paper thin and they just had their tv on in the next room and we were able to hear it clearly. Very old hotel with plenty of charm. Staff was very friendly. However....not a place for the elderly or infirm. No elevator and stairs are a little treacherous! It's pricey but a wonderful buffet is included in the morning. However....(again). We were made to feel like second class citizens because we were not allowed to sit in the dining room! As guest of the hotel, we were made to walk, with our plates and coffee, through a crowded area by the front desk, and down into the bar area! Someone was very poorly organized as this crowd of people were waiting to get into the dining room, saying they had made reservations! We checked into the room and filled the sauna with water. I got in and turned on the jets. I was immediately covered in what the manager later said was iron from the pipes. There was what looked like frosting smeared on the wall and across a picture frame. The room had a faint sewer. We were given a new room. We filled the sauna half way into filling it we ran out of hot water which of course made for a Luke warm experience and no hot water for a shower afterwards. Kim took me here fir my 70th birthday celebration. We made reservations and ate in the fine dinning room. Justin Glover is the Manager of the inn and when we made reservations I requested they let him know we were coming in. He met us when we got there and was gracious and outstanding. Our server was perfect she described the food perfectly. I had the Pear Gorgonzola Cheese salad, it was sensational, Kim had the chicken and rice soup he said it was really good, my entree was the duck it has a smooth spicy hint to it. Kim had the salmon he said it was done to perfection. I recommend this place with our highest ratings. I ordered the special dessert our server recommended. I planned a group event here (in the hotel's meeting room and then on the Sweet Afton boat owned by them). This event was a disaster from start to finish. When I began planning the event months prior, I secured the Conference room. Days before the event, when I was confirming details, they moved me to the Pennington room and tried to charge me a different price than what was listed online. I successfully argued my way out of the price discrepancy, but still was stuck in the Pennington room. Fine. Whatever. Also, at some point during the planning, they tried to shuffle my group to a different boat than I originally reserved. I said no. The catering coordinator at the Afton House assured me that they could do a custom menu. And they did. However, when I asked if they could create a hummus sampler with pita chips for an appetizer, I was told by the catering coordinator that she didn't know hummus came in other flavors besides "hummus flavor". Shouldn't someone who works with food all day know a thing or two about food? I corrected her which forced her to do some research and she came back to me with three hummus options, which were satisfactory. Fast forward to the evening of the meeting and boat/dinner cruise. When we arrived for the meeting, the space wasn't set up with pitchers of water, coffee or snacks as I requested. It was nearly impossible to track down the on-site coordinator. Time was ticking by as the guests were due to arrive any second. Finally, I found a different coordinator than the one I originally worked with. Obviously, there were some communication issues going on that I didn't know about. The on-site coordinator brought bottled water, which I specifically told the other coordinator that I did not want (while in the planning stages). I asked him to take it back and bring pitchers of water with nice water goblets. A supporting staff member gave me a roll of the eyes at this point. Classy. The music piped into the hotel was blaring in the meeting room which I asked them to turn down. I guess it took a rocket scientist to do so, because it took a while. The decor in the Pennington room was dowdy. Yuck. Some guests needed to use the restroom. We were directed to the bathrooms in the bar area. I've never seen a smaller bathroom in a public venue in my life, quite frankly. There is an exposed floor-to-ceiling pipe in the way of the sink! It's worse than dive bar quality - albeit a little tidier). Later, upon leaving, we were told by a different staff member that there was a nicer, bigger bathroom somewhere else in the establishment. Thanks a lot for that useful bit of knowledge! In between the meeting and the boat/dinner cruise, my guests and I went to the bar. i was relieved to find a friendly bartender there. On to the boat/dinner cruise. This is where the real sh*t went down. Being one of the hostesses for the event, I didn't go through the food line until everyone else did. When I went through, I realized the staff forgot to put out the salad dressing. My guests were apparently too polite to inform anyone that they were eating dry salad. There were supposed to be 3 main entrees. A Moroccan Chicken Penne dish, beef skewers on a bed of basmati rice, and a chickpea curry dish. The chickpea curry dish was missing and my vegetarian guests (including myself) were left scratching their heads. I inquired about the missing dish and got the most unfavorable response ever. The staff member halfheartedly looked around and proceeded to shrug and say "sorry!". Naturally, I was FUMING and said "it has to be here!!!! You must find it!". We're on a boat. So it's either on the boat or it's back at the restaurant and the boat won't turn around to get it. The staff member reluctantly went up to the captain on the deck to call the Afton House kitchen to find out where it was. Turns out it was on the boat the whole time...in a warming oven. Duh. He should have looked there first! Then, a dessert was missing from the dessert trio I ordered. Same story here as with the entree...the staff claimed they couldn't find it for at least 10 minutes)...then, lo and behold, it turned up in the fridge. Eureka! Mind you, the kitchen on this boat is smaller than my own kitchen in my tiny 450 sq foot apartment...so I'm not sure how all this stuff got "lost". I had requested coffee to be available to guests during dessert, and that wasn't put out either. I had to practically beg them for it and then it ended up being really weak and stale tasting coffee. Later, days after the event, I vocalized my disgust in a conversation with the event coordinator. I was told that some of the staff had been "let go" since my event. That's too bad. I think maybe they were just lacking good training. A good note...my guests (and the boat captain!) loved the food. They didn't know it was a menu designed by a chef at a competing cruise line. My husband and I stayed here on our road trip to Yellowstone. It's a beautiful historic inn about 15 minutes off I-94 but it feels like the middle of nowhere. The town of Afton consists of this place (and its two restaurants) a general store and two ice cream places. It has been voted the best day trip bed and breakfast by a bunch of St. Paul/Minneapolis magazines. Comfy beds, nice river views, and reasonably priced. The Afton Inn Restaurant is supposedly one of MN's best. We ate at the Catfish Saloon, which is also connected to the inn, which was really tasty but much cheaper. The same chefs cook for both places. Worth the stop. read more

Afton is a nice area and we have had nice stays here before. However, the room we were in this time was pretty dilapidated. The toilet seat was wobbly, the floors extremely creaky, smelled sort of musty, and the bedspread was quite dated and itchy. We were watching the Tour De France in the morning so I asked to take breakfast upstairs and the woman warned me "there's no table in there, people eat on the bed and end up paying for a new bedspread", as if it's common to discourage eating in a hotel room (and quite honestly the bedspreads are yucky and need replacing anyway). It just wasn't a very comfortable stay and definitely not worth the money. You can stay somewhere nicer in Stillwater for about as much $ so unless they update some stuff I don't think we will be back even though we love being by the St. Croix. The food at the restaurant was good and other than the woman who threatened me with charges if I spilt my breakfast, the staff was very nice. Would definitely go back for Lunch/Dinner, just wouldn't spend the night again. read more

Disappointing Easter Brunch today. The place was packed, there was a wait even with reservations and they kept running out of food and plates. The smoked salmon was really good, the potatoes were good too, but the chicken, beef, salmon was dry. Vegetables were tasty but drenched in sauce. Breakfast items nothing to write home about. The Caesar salad was laden with dressing and not even on ice. VERY limp! The rolls were so dry you couldn't even swallow them and dessert was a thin piece of cake that was not great. We stayed at this hotel and had a dinner in one of the restaurants they have. As for the stay, wall is really thin so you can hear EVERYTHING from your neighbor. Water pressure for the shower was weak. We paid about 170 bucks for a stay, and it wasn't worth it. I wouldn't come back here again. As for dinner, we had truffle fries and brussle sprouts and they were ok. Nothing special. We paid about 70 bucks for a few drinks and a few food. I though it's expensive for the quality. read more

My family went here for our Thanksgiving meal. What a disaster! Even though we had reservations, we had to WAIT FOR 40 MINUTES PAST OUR RESERVATION TIME before we were seated. The waiting area was a mess - so crowded that waitresses could barely squeeze by. When we were seated, it was in a drafty room, with an area for dirty dishes directly behind our table. This meant that the staff was constantly behind our table, which was already crowded. The food was nothing better than mediocre. Some of it was lukewarm, and some was just not well made. The water for our tea wasn't even hot. Since the Thanksgiving meal is a buffet, we had to walk to another room to stand in a long line. To get to the room, we had to squeeze our way through the overcrowded waiting area, excusing ourselves to get by the other impatient guests. The price for this terrible service and mediocre food was absolutely ridiculous. To give credit where it's due, our waitress was pretty good - friendly and prompt. We attended their Thanksgiving brunch. Food was bland and Turkey incredibly dry. They seemed very disorganized. People were all gathered in the entry way and they would seat anyone until all the food was ready. We sat for 20 minutes fter we finished eating wondering about the advertised desserts. Though dinner was a buffet there was no sight of dessert. I went to the host stand and asked. He explained our server would be bringing by a large tray of selections. He sent our server over and he said we could have apple, pumpkin, pecan pie or apple crisp (no big tray of choices). My daughter choose apple crisp and he returned a minute later and said they were out. Considering we were one of the first people seated this seemed odd. She chose apple and he returned with..and I am not exaggerating here..the smallest pieces of pie I have ever seen. My pecan pie was bland, grainy, tough, and was about 3 inches long and 2 inches wide. We actually laughed out loud when he put it down. Only one had while cream on it and it was melted and running down the side. My daughters didnt have whip cream or anything on it and the waited sighed when I asked if she could have some. The table next to us was also offered chocolate torte and since the pie we had was so awful I called over their server and asked for a piece of the torte we were not given as an option. We had been served our appetizers when we noticed smoke coming through the floor less than 10 feet from our table. Turns out the basement right below us had an electrical fire. A small basement full of wiring and pipes that was not equipped with a smoke alarm. One of the employees was a volunteer fireman so the restaurant decided not to call the fire department even though servers were telling him the kitchen was filling with smoke and had a smoldering smell to it. We stood outside for 20 minutes while they tried to put out the fire and clear the dining room of smoke. The staff tried to get us to go in and finish our meal. We decided to leave. When I went to settle the bill they didn't take one penny off for our inconvenience. As we sat in the car getting ready to leave my husband decided to call the fire department and give them a heads up. When we were less than a mile down the road we saw the fire department coming towards us to respond to the fire. On a side note their fondue appetizer is really awesome. I would highly recommend it. The Goldie's Walleye had a very nice breaking to it. The seasonal vegetable was some kind of lentil with a glaze on it that was not very good. Also, we ordered a salad and with no one else in the restaurant it came out less than 5 minutes before our meal. Our service was below standard for the prices charged. If you're hoping to see the river good luck, way too far back for a view. You are paying for the old inn feel, but the price was too expensive for the quality and view. About two weeks ago I stop in at the Afton House Inn to see if this would be a good choice for a group of 15 for a Saturday luncheon. The Current restaurant wasn't a good choice for our group, so I was shown the Pennington dining room and decided this room would work out well for our group, because the room was small and I thought it would be a quiet place to dine, plus the ambiance of the room with the fireplace and white table cloths was the deciding factor. On Saturday upon arrival at the Afton House Inn, before the rest of the group arrived, we were brought into the Pennington dining room that we were going to occupy and saw that the tables were not set up for a group dining together all the tables were separate. The only thing on each table was an empty candle holder, no silverware, water glasses and most important no table cloths. I mentioned to one of the servers that the tables were bare, no table cloths. She said, would you like table cloths put on the tables, and I said yes. As the rest of the people were arriving Georgene, Director of Sales, pulled me aside to tell me that there is a $10 charge for each of the table cloths when ordering off the Current menu. We used 9 tables. By that time most of the people were seated so it was too late to take them off the tables. We were not told that there would be a charge if table cloths were put on the tables. Georgene did discount the charge for the table clothes to a total of $32. Whoever heard of a charge for table linens. The Lowell Inn and Lake Elmo Inn do not charge for table linens and at both of those restaurants, your table is also set up with silverware, glass water glasses with no extra charge. We were also told that we would have to serve ourselves water from the glass beverage server that was set up on the sideboard. The glasses for the water were plastic, not glass, another disappointment. We were not asked if we wanted something else to drink other than water, we had to ask the server to order a drink. After the servers took our food orders we waited for a long time before just one person's order was served. It was a long time after that that 2 more orders come out, then another long wait then another 1 order came out and on and on. It took forever for everyone to be served their food. It was if the chef/cook could only prepare one order at a time. The last person that was waiting for her order was served as everyone else was finishing up. Plus, everyone's french fries were cold. This was a terrible dining experience for everyone in the group. We are all disappointed in The Afton House Inn and most won't be returning. The Afton House Inn has always held a special place for me, my family took me here for my first communion, and i took a date to prom here. On Mother's Day 2016 while I was home visiting I took my mother here for brunch. Both of us were shocked and disappointed as to how far down this once great place had gone. The food quality was so pathetic. They used powdered eggs, everything was luke warm, and presentation was just unappetizing. Fine dining, what a joke! They advertise fine dining but it was served in the room where I ate my crap breakfast buffet. White tablecloths don't make it fine, still smelled like burnt toast. The waitress was nice but when I mentioned how they have fine dining in the buffet room she seemed embarrassed, I heard some of the other staff talking about saving heat not having it in the other room, which is no treat either. If the ambiance wasn't bad enough, it was doubled with bad food. Moldy smelling room with old, not antique, furniture and bedding. Thank god it was a groupon because you wouldn't want to see my review if I would have paid full price. Check in girl was obnoxious as well. read more
