The good, a historical landmark. Yes, the carpet is dingy, window sills are disgustingly littered with pigeon poop, no shower pressure etc. Oh my... only stayed here because it was near the Capital for the No Kings protest. I would say all of my complaints could be disallowed if only the front desk person was even remotely interested in me or any of the guests. Shocked, that when I asked her a question she was engrossed in her series ; Grey's Anatomy ?? What a mess! The kind personable individual we checked in with, a smart looking man, was such a stark contrast to this woman who clearly would rather be on her couch watching said series! Such a waste ! Interesting place! It has some charm, but I'd definitely stay elsewhere in the future for more modern amenities. Everything smells powerfully strange, like your grandma's basement on steroids, and the water pressure is nonexistent. Elevator smells like dead fish and Lysol. There aren't any shades or curtains on the windows, so enjoy your 5:40 a.m. sunrise, and the fitness center is basically a dank closet with dubious air conditioning. Bottle filler, which is advertised in the elevator and by the front desk, does not work. Staff is nice, though! read more

The St. Paul is like your high mileage premium sedan -- it's well constructed with suitable prestige but maybe without some of the modern amenities. It's no longer the premium solution around but it's solid, dependable, a bit old-school, and maybe the best overall value. In short, I prefer it. Excellent service throughout the hotel from the door person to the front desk to restaurant to housekeeping. Friendly and efficient. Food quite good, especially for a hotel, but without an extravagant markup. So what's holding it back? - not many power outlets in room, only one at desk and one on bedside - WiFi is slow in some rooms - bathroom is small with older fixtures and not much lighting - bar isn't open after Wild games, except on weekends The St Paul is an excellent choice when staying in the area. Booked a room here because it was very unique and still affordable. The room was clean and comfortable enough if we kept the air conditioner running full bore at all times. I can't quite articulate why this property earns four stars from me instead of five, but it is a solid place to stay, especially if you like to stay at unique properties rather than cookie cutter chain hotels. If you're staying in town without a car, the lack of parking lot here won't be an annoyance. But if you, like us, had a rental car to contend with, the lack of dedicated parking might become a noteworthy annoyance. read more

So much character with this place! It used to be a convent, and the hotel kept with this theme. But as much as the building is older, the rooms are quite modern and well kept up. Being a conversion, there are quite a few quirks in the rooms, but I think it adds to the experience. They don't have their own parking, but there is a garage next door and others in easy parking distance. Now there are a number of homeless people in the area, but I still felt safe walking to the Xcel center at night and to my car in the morning. Considering how many people I drove past in the morning, I think you're going to have that at any of the downtown hotels. Oh, and I would be remiss if I didn't mention the breakfast - they had the usual sausage, potato, and egg options that you see at most hotels with free hot breakfast. Misleading pricing on website! This is a warning for anyone planning your trip ahead of time. I had done my research comparing hotels in the area and was so excited to find the Celeste. The website displayed that the price was "$845 including fees." However, when the time came to actually book the room, the real price came to $987. I was confused so I called the hotel directly to find out why. The receptionist was extremely rude. It was such a disappointing experience when I had been looking forward to staying here! read more

I don't understand how anyone could possibly give this hotel a good review unless they think it was supposed to be a hostel or I don't know what. The rooms were dark and dingy...I had 2 reserved and changed one because of the noise from the train that was 10 feet from our window. The paint was peeling, there was mold in the bathrooms, cobwebs and absolutely filthy, disgusting carpet. The bar had a small bits menu which was served and prepared by the bartender. Never order food from anywhere that has the bartenders doing the cooking. No offense but flatbread isn't supposed to be floppy. Also, we had to walk a block in the ice and snow with our bags to check in because employees were parked in the guest loading zone...yep...you read that correctly. When I discovered this I said it was rude and inconsiderate of the guests. It was actually the manager that was parked and when I mentioned that I was going to contact the owner she told me 'go ahead.' I did actually email the owner but never heard back. I've been traveling on business for 50 years and have never had an experience like this in all that time. read more

A very historical hotel that used to be a covenant(I might be mistaken). It certainly is very unique with many old decors and furnitures. I however did not have a good time because amenities in the hotel were simply too old and some didn't function well. For example, the weather was very hot and humid, but the AC in my room was a very old stand-alone model and didn't keep the room cool and dry all night. The gym was very small with very limited numbers of equipment and the AC in there also wasn't working too well, which made my workout pretty painful. The hall way also had a subtle old scent that I didn't enjoy. I am sure some people would really enjoy this hotel for its aesthetic. read more

I love this place. As you walk into the old building you feel as if you are back in time. You are then greeted by a bar that is fully stocked with libations. To the right, there are some private booth areas. The hotel is said to have a haunted room and you can hear about it if you do the haunted tour. The service is second to none. Whoa. As someone who didn't grow up in a church, I have a unique fascination for Celeste St. Paul Hotel. One of my coworkers told me about the history, and it was a fun stay overall. Beautiful aesthetic and comfortable hotel room. Downsides were stiff towels, weird smells, and lack of soundproofing. I did enjoy the complimentary breakfast buffet both mornings I was there. We had an opportunity to check this place out as family was staying here and we pre-drank at the bar prior to our dinner reservations. Very fun to know that this was a nunnery back in the day and now they offer drinks and rooms. The specialty drinks were very flavorful, however it took a very long time to get service at first even though it was a very small bar area. We tried the Adam's Apple, which was Apple Cider & Bourbon Punch and the Revival, which was Tramantino Limoncello, Tattersall Crème de Fleur, Owen's Ginger Beer. I would definitely order both again. This little hidden GEM was perfect! I needed a night - Celeste was perfect! Beautiful Nunnery turned into a boutique Hotel. I will start off by saying this place is beautiful and the room we stayed in was nothing less then perfect! Minus I wish the Frig would of been stocked. That being said the bar was quaint and a nice cocktail, wine list. Wish there would of been more than 4 items to nibble on. Bartender was friendly. That being said the women checking us in was not. Which completely sets the tone for the stay- which would of been a complete turn off, but I needed rest. The bed was cloud like comfortable, and the shower nice as well. The view was breathtaking! This is such a great spot in downtown St. Paul! I've been told that this is former St. Paul conservatory, McNally, and a former music school taught by the Sisters of Carondolet! I am so very happy, as a Saint Catherine's alum, that the original structure, stained glass windows, and spaces have been preserved (to the extent that they could). We absolutely fell in love with the design, so much so that we almost wished that we could have had our ceremony here instead at the chapel and use their reception space, but it hadn't opened until two weeks after our date. The room was spacious, comfortable, and the breakfast was set up very well, given COVID. We would have loved to have spent more time here, and look forward to going back! read more

It could've been great if the check-in experience were different. My husband and I decided to go on a little road trip, we live near the Chicagoland area. I used the Hotels app and this was a top suggestion. Such a cute little hidden place. We needed a night and this was a very good choice! Well... the check-in was a bit rocky. I didn't catch his name but the front desk person was a bit too "Minnesota Nice," (sarcasm). My husband and I had about a seven-hour drive, so we were very tired. The front desk guy instead of greeting me in a more welcoming manner said "uh you look lost." A F T E R the front desk guy saw my husband and I carry our bags he decided it was a good idea to say "oops, I could've been nicer and tell you there is a side door." Why even say anything at the point. So I decided to reply with "oh this will be helpful for my Yelp review." This was followed by his stupid comment "Yelp is for yellers." WARNING!!!!!- There will be an Alexa in your suite!! My husband and I felt really creeped out by it so we decided to unplug. Talk about graceful hospitality. The beautifully-proportioned 350-square foot Garden King delights with a sumptuous king-sized bed, Ultra-HD TV, workstation desk, and spacious bath. We learned it was a nunnery and it was turned into this beautiful hotel. I will start off by saying this place is beautiful and the room we stayed in was nothing less than perfect. The bedroom was very comfortable the bed was amazing!! What truly made it a good experience was the following morning. The reservation had breakfast included. WOW! The options they offer are GREAT! It makes it really hard to pick. The morning chef asked if everything was good. He was sooo polite, I'm so mad at myself for not catching his name. Thanks to him, our experience was much better! Definitely will be an option next time we are around the area. Self-park is available metered on the street or the World Trade Center parking ramp. Although I haven't stayed at The Celeste or eaten in the bar/lounge, I was able to go on a tour of the hotel. Having worked in the building in the mid-1990s when the Minnesota Composers Forum had an office there, it was a trip down memory lane going through this restored and renovated hotel. What once used to be a convent that had close to 100 nuns, this historic property has undergone many changes since it was built. What I enjoyed seeing was the many historic and original elements still a part of the hotel. The antiques, beautiful restored paintings, and chandeliers all created a majestic and welcoming, upscale entrance and lobby. The rooms are impeccably designed and decorated; and the windows block out the noise from the streets. Throughout the entire time we were touring the hotel we did not hear any street noise. The views - depending on which room you are in - were impressive with the State Capitol in clear view from one section of the hotel. The bridal suite is lovely with 18-foot ceilings and indications that it used to be part of the altar. The eating area for breakfast was once a chapel and it was a joy to see the beautiful stained glass windows still in place. Parking is available in a nearby lot within easy walking distance (about a half a block). Otherwise, the light rail is close by for those not using a car. The Celeste is an elegant hotel with rooms that are simple yet beautiful. If there is ever a need to stay downtown St. Paul, I would definitely want to stay here! read more

This was a splurge for a middle class woman on her birthday. :) It did NOT disappoint! 100% would stay here again. What a beautiful hotel. We paid 217 for one night in an executive king room. It had a closet, fridge, large king bed, nice side tables, beautiful decor. Pros: beautiful large spacious rooms, views of the captiol, the end tables have plus and USB ports, fun decor. Hotel staff is amazing. Breakfast is amazing. See below for more details. Cons: it's not a super quiet place to sleep on a Friday night. We didn't go to bed super early but the sirens, light rail and people on the street can be heard from your room. if you have someone on the floor above you, you can hear creaking floors. the noise of the city starts at 8 a.m. there are bells from the church next door that start at 8. the light rail also starts at 8. Tips: Park in the World Trade Center ramp. I read some parking reviews that said parking cost up to 18 dollars, but that was not the case for us. We checked in at 3 on Friday and checked out by 11 on Saturday and the price was 10.50. Request a higher floor for better views. Ask about the tour that they give around St Paul - Sister Celeste. We didn't have time but hear it's amazing and funny. Ask the hotel staff for the writeup about the hotel and the history. It's fascinating and points out which original paintings were done by the nuns and also by the woman who works there and is a children's artist! She was lovely to meet in person! Do not miss breakfast. It's lovely and in a lovely space and also so delicous. We walked in to the smell of blueberry and their blueberry scones were to die for. Also loved the premade breakfast sandwiches that you could microwave. The options to choose from were overabundant! Truly a fun time. Explore the hotel on your own and check out the hallways and the art. If you want to go to a movie, go to Woodbury 10. They have renovated the insides of the theater and they are all leather rocking chair type ones. The cost for the matinee was 6.00!! at 5:30 p.m.! The drinks and popcorn are super cheap! We also ate dinner at Cosetta's which has free parking and delicious food. Their gelato and italian desserts are top notch. The macaroons tasted like Paris. Random story: This hotel used to house nuns and they taught music and other classes. There is a lovely peaceful spirit in the hotel that is welcoming and calm. In the middle of the night, I felt light touch on my foot and a tingle so I think one of the ghost nun spirits was just passing by. :) read more

What a gem! We booked a suite with another couple to celebrate a day out in St. Paul and were instantly pleased with the Celeste as soon as we walked through the front door. It's very cozy and aesthetically pleasing with hardwood floors and exposed brick. Check-in was easy and fast. The room had comfy beds, a fun sitting area, and huge bathroom. We decided to grab a drink in the bar which has a couple of private areas (say hello to Robin if you have a chance to stop in). Our lack of a view was the only thing I could complain about, but not a big deal. Parking was not included in the deal. Definitely different. If you're cool with nun pictures in every room, creaking wood floors and furniture then this is your spot. BUT the hotel does NOT offer parking, public parking is next to hotel and you have to pay each outing. Hotel offers breakfast on the 2nd floor. Potatoes were cold, and the hallway leading smelled like egg. It made me nauseous..there is no open air ventilation. We booked a 2 bedroom suite and every balcony area was full of pigeon cr*p. It was gross, knowing we were eating in the living area 1 ft away from mounds of bird sh*t. Not cool. Apparently hotel used to be covenant, but once being there it was just off. My boyfriend and I visited the Twin Cities area to see the Caps-Wild game. We chose the Celeste because it seemed to be a unique hotel and is a short walk from the Xcel Energy Center. The hotel is a former convent, and there is as mix of old fashioned (the bar off the main entry, the windows in our room) and the modern (the glass-enclosed shower and the Echo Dot on the nightstand). There is also a light rail station steps from the hotel (although we didn't get a chance to use it, much to my disappointment). There is also free breakfast on the 2nd floor, which we did take advantage of. (I'm happy if I can get toast, nut butter, and fruit, and most hotel breakfasts offer that.) I don't know when I'll be getting back to the area, but for friends visiting, I'll certainly recommend the Celeste. read more

Fantastic new addition situated next to the Fitzgerald theatre. The restoration of this historic property is quite incredible. They have a great little bar with attached lounge areas to hang and enjoy yourself. I was lucky enough to snag a quick tour of the hotel to include the breathtaking Chapel Suite. What a gem! This would be the perfect spot for a staycation, if on town for biz, this would be a cool spot to checkout. I'm eager to return to explore the wine menu further. This is a quick review. Our rule.. if there's a parking spot outside, we are meant to stop in!! Perfect! Spot right outside. The drinks are all Religious names (but funny!!!!) ... in fact I'm having Holy water right now! The bar seats about 32.. happy hour is literally 1 hour. And I've been told...it gets packed! Beautiful hotel in an old music conservatory for nuns, it does a great job of being modern while maintaining the history. My only complain was, being an old building with a boiler system, they have the heating and cooling set the same for the whole building. My room was 71 degrees and I didn't sleep at all. I had such a wonderful time staying at this hotel! It used to be a nunnery! And this is represented in the tasteful but eccentric art work placed throughout the building. It is located right next to the light rail and the MPR building. From my window, I had a clear view of a beautiful church, whose bells rang a few times throughout the day, and the MPR building which provided up to date weather on their marquee if that is interesting to you. The one downside to this is that the light rail does announce itself occasionally so if you do not do well with occasional sounds like that, you might want to see if there is a room that does not sit so close to the light rail or this might not be a good fit for you. Our room was small but very cozy and perfect for our needs. The heat can get a bit excessive since I think it's boiler heat but tweak the dials and I am sure you will find a happy medium. Double curtains make every night a dark and peaceful night. Downstairs there is a very cute hotel bar that had AMAZING drinks (and food as well but we didn't try the food) There is complimentary breakfast downstairs and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. The closest parking lot was the public lot right next to the hotel and for one night, we ended up paying around $10 for parking (the hotel does not validate). The beds were comfortable and there was plenty to watch on the TV. I definitely will consider staying here again! read more
