Delicious and authentic street tacos. Food was fresh and well presented. What a find!

My wife asked me to pick up some food from this spot on my way home one night. As I drove up and saw it was connected to a gas station, I called her and asked her if she knew. She responded that the reviews were really good, so it was worth giving it a try. Man, she was right on the money. The food was outstanding! The place is built for speed and lacks warmth. No drive-through, makes it less convenient, but it's still worth it. I just moved to Carlsbad a couple of years back, and I've been trying to find the best Mexican food place around. I can confidently say that I have now found it and I will be frequenting it on the regs. I had the Agave Birrieria. It was amazing. Probably not something that I can eat regularly, though. I've seen this place numerous times on my way to the Starbucks and finally decided that today's the day to try this place. We went at 1:30 pm today (Friday). No drive through. So my bro and I went in and ordered food for the rest of the fam. This place is set-up more for take out rather than dining in. The lady at the register was super nice and friendly. We ordered the carne asada and shrimp rancheros plates that came with rice, beans and a flour tortilla. Also two burritos, cabeza and fish. And a coconut flan for dessert. Pros: Convenient location Food came out very quick Great customer service Coconut flan was absolutely delicious The shrimp rancheros were also delicious, very well seasoned & cooked perfectly. Cons: The burritos were much smaller, not as filled as other burritos from other Mexican restaurants. The carne asada was over cooked and dry There was only 2 pieces of fish in the fish burrito that were so over fried that it was hard and inedible. We had high hopes for this place, but our first impression fell flat. Not sure if it would be worth it to try and go again. read more

I got a couple quesabirria tacos and a churro delivered to me about 15 minutes away. Everything arrived still hot, and the tacos still perfectly crispy. By far the best quesabirria tacos I've ever had, and the best churro I've ever had. The tacos were loaded with birria, onions, cilantro, etc. I love that they include cucumbers, radishes, and grilled onions and pepper in the box too, it's a nice touch. The consommé was so flavorful! And the churro was so fluffy and warm with frosting/cream inside. It was delicious!! read more

I fully recognize that my dissatisfaction is because I didn't order birria, but when there's something on the menu called a Leucadia burrito I think it's safe to assume it's a popular and solid alternative. My burrito had such little bean and cheese and was super soggy, to the point that it was falling apart and I couldn't finish it without using a plate and utensils. We have been going to Agave for a bit and I'm shocked that I haven't reviewed one of the regular spots we hit up if someone is craving Mexican food(mostly my wife). The breakfast burritos are BOMB. You can't go wrong with any of the options because they are all packed with meat which we love. To illustrate, I bought my friend a ham burrito and he isn't a fan of ham, but he liked it in this burrito. I love the bacon they use. It is really THICK. Lately I've been on a crispy taco kick and they are here just like everything on the menu. I was always skeptical of restaurants right next to gas stations, but most of the time it is some of the BEST food. It's true for BBQ in KC and it's true for Mexican food in SD. Inside is super clean, but not really a sit and eat place. They have benches outside, but most people get their orders ToGo. As a Mexican, I can be pretty particular about authentic Mexican food. While I wasn't completely blown away, I genuinely enjoyed my meal and would absolutely come back. The quality of the ingredients was excellent, and it's some of the better birria I've had in North County San Diego. Great birria is at a Chevron off the 5 freeway! Yes you heard that right. This newer restaurant is a a bright place but is only take out. No tables, just a counter to order at with a knowledgeable lady at the counter. The food came out quickly. As we were waiting we noticed there were several regulars who came in and she knew their orders. The Al pastor, beans and agua frescas were also good. I have never experienced this! I ordered the Cali burrito as well as 2 other burritos for my kids. I took several bites and felt something hard, fortunately I stopped chewing and pulled out about a three inch long wire which was pretty thick. Needless to say I was shocked and relieved I didn't swallow it or that my kids didn't get it. I threw all the burritos out and called the restaurant immediately to let them know. They blew me off and hung up. I really just wanted to warn them that if this was swallowed it could get lodged in the throat or perforate the intestines. Awesome Mexican to-go spot attached to a gas station! Here's how you always know when it's about to go down. Most Mexican restaurants attached to gas stations are fantastic. The cost is significantly lower for the space itself and all the attention goes into the food. There's a line out the door and it's all hungry and the most hard working men in the world. These guys need to be very satisfied to be outside and in the heat building, fixing, or maintaining the cities we live in. We were greeted with a very infectious smile. Ordered our tacos and were originally going to eat outside of the business but they've removed all seats & tables. So we just drove down the street to the beach and enjoyed them with an ocean view instead. Could not have worked out any better. The store is very bright and clean. Our Quesabirria tacos were filled with very tender meat, lots of gooey cheese, cilantro, and finely chopped red onions. The shells of the tacos are crispy and greasy perfection. The consomé is so good you could just drink it straight. Don't forget to squeeze lime all over everything... There will most likely be a line during peak times but it moved very quickly. Totally worth waiting for and like I said enjoy your food at the beach if you have a few extra minutes to get down the street. So good and will definitely be back!!! read more

We ordered catering from here for a bonfire over the weekend. Everyone loved the food, we went with their recommendation to order 1/2 of meat per person so we ended up getting 6lb of birria and 4lb of pollo asado for any non-meat eaters. The birria was served in the consomme and was very tender and flavorful. The pollo asado was very good as well, but the birria was definitely the star of the show. We ordered sides of beans and rice, with 50 tortillas, salsa, guac, along with a small tray of toppings that included limes, radishes, cilantro and onions. Everyone built their own tacos or rice plates, and it was overall a hit. Being more of a lowkey spot, it was a little hard to get ahold of someone to originally place the order with, I had tried to call a few weeks ahead and was told the manager would call back but I never heard back. I then tried emailing a week later but didn't hear a response, but when I called again the week of the event they took my order over the phone and had everything ready to go by the expected time. My one suggestion for them would be to not be so stingy with napkins. We ordered $250 worth of food + tip, but when I asked for some napkins I was told "they weren't included in the package." I woulda thrown a few bucks in for napkins just so I didn't have to make another pit stop before taking the food to the beach, but they didn't offer that as an option. I get that times are tough right now and businesses need to make some cuts, but I don't think asking for 20-30 napkins after making a large order and tipping is asking for a lot, particularly because there was a large stack of napkins I could visibly see behind the counter. I was pleasantly surprised to find this establishment in North County. The customer service was awesome, the girl (Lupita) at the counter was super friendly and explained to me how the birria was served. The ambiance is like a to go establishment, there is no seating inside. I ordered to go the #13 birria plate which came with beans and rice. It was also served with your choice of flour or corn tortillas. The birria (which is beef) was good. The broth and meat were not greasy or fatty. The rice was a bit salty to my liking, but the refried beans were really good. I think the beans were refried in lard which is why they were so tasty. Minus 1 star because no lemons/limes or onions and cilantro were provided. I didn't notice this until I got home, too far for me to drive back. Will need to be back to try the birria tacos and quesa birria tacos. read more

Their green salsa is something else. Fish tacos prob the best fish tacos around. I moved so it's like 30 min away now but I'll always stop by for either a birria burrito or fish tacos (or honestly both since we moved). Their fish taco is the best one IMO. I've passed this restaurant many times, and I finally got to try, and I was not disappointed. For a gas station spot, I was amazed by my experience at Agave Birrieria! We ordered the Birria Burrito and Carne Asada fries (full size). (The menu says 1/2 size, so you can pay more for the full size. We didn't know this, so we had to ask to clarify) The portions were very generous, so it was good to share with another person; that way, you get to try more items! Personally, I liked the fries more than the burrito. The fries were topped with nicely seasoned meats, guacamole, and sour cream. Delicious! The burrito was also good; they definitely give you a lot of meat. We were also offered salsa and hot sauce. In terms of service, we were a little surprised to see how busy this unassuming establishment was. People were coming in and out, picking up and eating togo. The employees worked hard to service everyone. They spoke Spanish and English. We got our food fairly quickly, too. They used to have an outdoor seating area, which was a kind of cute spot to sit and eat as you watch cars whiz by on the freeway. Had a random thought to try Birria Tacos for the first time...but it was late at night and all the normal taco spots were closed. Except for this one! Haha The location seems new and clean, staff is friendly and answered all my questions. She advised that I order the Queso Birria since that's the one that everyone raves about so I got 1 of those plus a regular Birria Taco, and 2 street taco sized carnitas ones. The carnitas tacos weren't anything to rave about...pretty standard and they had a pineapple salas on top that I did not like, kinda wish they said that I came standard that way, I would have asked to remove it. As for the Birria tacos...the Queso Birria was definitely the way to go! The taco and "juice" or broth (not sure what it's called) was tasty! The plan Birria taco was boring and needed the juice or atleast some Salas. So I'd say this spot is decent for some quick and late night eats but it's not my first choice for tacos or maybe even Queso Birria if it's during daytime hours.
