Not unlike El Pueblo, the cheap Al Pastor and fish tacos are pretty decent! The TJ street taco sized tortillas are a bit on the small size but overall can't beat the deal. Also "on special", I tired the shrimp diablo burrito (shrimp, rice, beans, and cheese) - mostly rice filler but the beans have good flavor. I suppose if you're on a budget it's pretty filling and not terrible. No complaints on the breakfast burrito nor the fair price to add sour cream. Pretty much what you'd expect out of a standard SD BB. That being said, this would not be my choice for a Cali burrito. Sadly, basically a ton of soft undercooked fries and little meat and even less of the guac pico and SC. Too bad they skimp on the carne asada because it seemed like decent meat. Salsas are pretty mediocre "to be expected" milder red, spicier red, habanero, Verde, and a cream based cilantro lime if you're into that weirdness. Maybe it's nitpicking but I always find it weird to charge more than the menu prices which I'm going to assume is a 4% CC upcharge without any mention. The place is clean and the service was polite and efficient. When trying a new place I always go with a carne asada burrito as a baseline to compare to my favorites. Serrano's carne asada burrito came with carne, guacamole and pico de gallo. For $14-15 it seemed on the small side. The meat seemed to be of decent quality with no gristle. Something, I don't know if it was the marinade or the pico but there was a sweet taste to the burrito. I tried the their two red salsas, spicy and mild. Both were underwhelming in my opinion. Tl;dr don't stop at this place, keep driving. We stopped in for dinner on our way back to OC. The service was friendly, but very slow. The cashier was really nice, but she seemed more concerned with chatting with customers than working quickly (maybe she felt like she had to talk to these people, as they seemed like regulars). We waited patiently, but some customers were getting really upset at the long wait times and making a scene, so that was awkward and definitely took away from the atmosphere. The food was very mediocre, especially given the high prices. The guacamole was outright gross and we only ate about half of it, which is unusual for us as a guac-loving family. It tasted like poor quality avocados were used; it had that weird rotten fruit taste that low quality avocado variants often have. The beef taco was good with a nice portion. The fish tacos had a nice flavor, but there was barely any fish in them and one of my tacos had a bone that hurt my tooth. The potato taco was flavorless and definitely the worst of the tacos. They advertise prices in the outside and the menu prices in their board are not what you get charged. Example a breakfast burrito says $9.95 on the board but when it's rang up it's $11.95. . This isn't the first time I've addressed it , they just need to update their menu it's been months! If you like cheap and cheerful, as they say in the UK, Serranos Mexican Food fits the bill. A large, well-lit space in a mall not known for the inexpensive, it seems to be a family-run business with considerable service props. Staff is fast and genuinely friendly, and this is always a big draw for any establishment. It also features a number of daily and weekly specials, many of them reasonably priced. Their small, $1 tacos (only served at certain times of the day) are a great way to fill up. One can order eight or nine of those bad boys and come away full and with a fair amount of change still in your pocket. Why then only three stars? Gotta call like I see it: mediocre food. There is nothing wrong with it, but it is uninteresting and in some cases lacking all flavor whatsoever (the fish tacos are a sad case in point). The salsa bar features several watery and tired sauces. And in some cases, like the al pastor, the quality of the meat is gristly to the point of being unchewable. I do like the feel of Serranos. But they need to balance their cheap prices against quality. In a town that boasts several really first rate Mexican spots and taquerias, unfortunately SMF doesn't compete. read more

Average Mexican food in a strip mall. After passing by this place plenty of times I decided to pop in following a shopping trip to Lazy Acres. It was barely worth the effort. There was a strange, almost clear, sauce in the Wife's chicken fajitas burrito. My chile relleno is thick, tough and hard to eat. Unsurprisingly, the bean tostado was decent, hard to mess it up. At least the food came out quickly. I think I'll stick with reheated pizza slices from Lazy Acres when my hunger strikes and I'm in the area. read more

It does get busy but when we went it wasn't that busy which was nice. The only negative thing I'd have to say was the trash can. Both were pretty full and hadn't been changed in a while. The guacamole is not quality. I had a large order for a graduation party and was rather embarrassed at how terrible it was. Pollo burritos are good, wet burritos and steak asada, but avoid the guac and avoid the fish burrito. I went in to advise the clerk and was not even offered a refund. A food friend recommended Serranos and it was an awesome tip. This casual restaurant makes their food from scratch and the prices are reasonable. The prices on the web site are extremely out of date. I consider Serranos a step above the Mexican restaurants lining the coast highway in Encinitas, and there is a lot of competition. I appreciate the modified authentic food preparation with a healthier twist. Serranos does not use Lard in their beans or fried foods and the sauces and rice are vegetarian as well. I love being able to explore everything on the menu. My go to order is a chile relleno combo, but everything on the menu looks outstanding. 4 stars for easy, inexpensive, and convenient Mexican food. We loved Serrano's, but if you're looking for a fancy dinner house, upscale curated dining experience, please look elsewhere. That said, the people working at Serranos are so lovely and hospitable. I believe it's owned and operated by a family. It was so nice to meet them. We ordered a carnitas burrito and carnitas plate. Apparently, we like carnitas!. And these were some kind of excellent carnitas. Shredded with lots of crispy edges. Delicious. The plate included frijoles refritos and rice, a mound of fresh shredded lettuce, guacamole and pico de gallo, plus tortillas of your choice. (The flour tortillas were enormous.) The food arrived steaming hot. As for the burrito, it was huge-at least a pound full of meat and beans, exactly as ordered. The menu has all kinds of authentic offerings. The special of the day when we were there was shrimp offered three ways. The prices are reasonable. The food quality is way high. There's a self-serve salsa bar to spice up your meal even more if you can handle it. They do serve beer as well as regular soft drinks, Mexican Coke and traditional Mexican drinks like horchata and aguas frescos. The dining area is very clean, with someone keeping an eye for debris left behind on patrons' tables after they leave, making for a tidy presentation for the next person. We saw a lot of orders to go, as well as a large catering order going out the door for delivery. Several TVs with surfing videos playing while we were there, as well as a collection of neon beer signs, some vintage, decorating the walls. We'd like to thank "K", a local who suggested Serranos. It was as good, maybe even better than described. We only wish we lived closer to be able to frequent this place regularly. Great experience, excellent food and personable, sincere people. I was in Carlsbad helping a customer set up their produce department. Everyone was starving, so I offered to buy breakfast burritos. I'm always on the lookout for a new breakfast burrito spot to add to my list. I saw Serranos Mexican Food had great reviews for their breakfast burritos. I was overwhelmed with the options, so I just ordered an assortment of breakfast burritos: ham, 3 bacon, sausage, and carne asada (I picked that for me). I loved my carne asada burrito with some of the house salsa. I loaded up on all the salsas and a few of my colleagues like that white salsa-I didn't have, but now have to go back try another breakfast burrito with the white salsa. I was lucky to arrive early. Only the workers were there and the service was great and efficient. The place was was big and spacious. I bet it gets super busy around lunch. I will be back for more breakfast burritos. read more

This may be an ok place for tacos and burritos, but I was really disappointed with the carne asada plate. I ordered it to go for my wife in the hospital. Normally, a carne asada plate has a nice piece of carne asada with all the extras. When I opened the box in the hospital, it was chopped burrito or taco meat. Totally dry and unappetizing. It was a total ripoff. They charged a ton of money for basically a burrito with no tortilla. Like I said, maybe everything else is good, but definitely not the carne asada plate. I went here for the first time the other day. As a SoCal native I'm very picky about my Mexican food. I went pretty early in the morning so it was not very busy. The lady at the register was able to take her time and answer the few questions I had. I was really hungry so I made the mistake of not really looking over the menu. I ended up basically just getting a bean and cheese burrito with egg. No potatoes or meat. i was bummed but the flavor was really good. I tried 3 different salsa, all were very flavorful and the burrito was a hefty size for the price. I had read on the reviews about a wet burrito being $8 so that was what I really wanted. When I got there the menu price was close to $13 (I believe) so I opted for the breakfast burrito. Only to notice a few minutes later they have a special for the wet burrito for $8 on Monday (again, my mistake for not fully reading the menu and asking more questions). I didn't dine in so I didn't take a good look around but it is pretty spacious inside, clean and well lit even for the gloomy morning I was there. I will definitely return. I even told my daughter I tried it, since it is close to her work. She said they tried it recently too and really liked it as well. read more
