There is a reasonable size parking lot. 15-20 or so cars. There are bathrooms located at the parking lot. The hike from the parking lot to the actual craters is less than a mile and it's mainly flat, very little incline. The craters are awesome. One was easily seen than the other. The second one was surrounded with trees and plants. So it was hard to see. Worth a visit if your in mammoth!

The protective fence around parts of the craters is torn down and some of the cement columns for the last metal fence along the cliff are fully exposed and literally floating/hanging in the air, posing a danger to anyone leaning on that fence. There's a fair amount of mosquitos, though not as bad as the Minaret Falls hike where you get swarmed and eaten alive. Great views of the craters on this hike though.

The columns tower over 60 feet and these columns were formed approximately 100,000 years ago from a volcanic lava flow that cooled. The lava flow cracked into these multi sided columns. When you stand on a column you will see it forms a perfect octagon. WOW! Nature is so incredible. To get here, we took the shuttle from the main Mammoth Lakes Lodge. It was an easy ride down here and back. Parking is available at the lodge. The only vehicles that were allowed on the road besides the shuttles were for campers who had reservations and sites. Take your time when you are here to really study these structures. I highly recommend when visiting Mammoth Lakes.

Based on the photos, I was expecting this to be more like a cliff with a tall crack in it. In reality, it's more like a very long ditch. If you're into geology, or if you're super impressed by thinking about the earth splitting open, then maybe you should check this out. Personally, I wasn't very moved by this experience. If you didn't know that this was an earthquake fault, then there would be nothing impressive about it. It's just a very long gorge that is kind of deep in some places. I'm not sure if rappelling into the fault is allowed, but I thought it would be interesting to get a closer up view of some of the rocks and pools on the bottom. Honestly not really worth driving out of your way to see this unless you happen to be a geology fanatic, or are just dead set on seeing every possible sight near Mammoth.

My cousin even had a close call when he accidentally slid off the trail, ran down 100 feet, and narrowly missed hitting trees. (Slipper snow) Despite the challenges, the reward at the top was well worth it. It was a beautiful, secluded lake. Some of us tried a little fishing, while the girls jumped into the freezing cold water for a swim. The water was so "pristine" that my hair felt conditioned afterward. It was magnificent, the water felt untouched and almost holy! This past summer, we hiked it again for the 4th of July, and it was so much easier because I had lost 20 pounds, haha! I'd say the hike is about 13 minutes up, around 2 miles round trip, and great for all ages. Just make sure you're in decent shape and don't have any serious health concerns. When I was 20 pounds heavier, the hike felt like a 10/10 in difficulty. Now, it's more like a 3/10, a total breeze!

6/7/2025- Annual…read morefishing trip was truly a memorable one- Started to get a little worried wThursday evening and Friday- with no bites... The bank was filled with anglers- and no one was getting any bites- a few in boats-.. No bear visible- only heard someone yell "bear alert".. but didn't see one like last year's.. Late last night- success! Caught one around 8:30 pm.. a nice way to end the evening.. Saturday morning - bright and early- caught three!... Can't wait until the fall..
