The gallery is centrally located on the ground floor in Chelsea. Natural light and unimpeded wall space provide ideal viewing of photographs ranging from small photobooth prints to monumental museum-sized pieces. Respect for the medium is immediately apparent. The stable of represented artists is lengthy but includes Mickalene Thomas and Julius Shulman. Recent gallery-based exhibitions and presentations at Untitled and the Armory include recognizable mainstay artists like Larry Sultan, Sharon Core and Ori Gersht; Rachel Perry and Hellen van Meene, too many talents to list. Jared Bark has been shown in the gallery after many years of exposure limited to only collectors in the know, prompting a re-examination by curators and art historians. Focused exhibiting of artists newer to the scene, but no less important, like Zanele Muholi, document socially important concepts of race, gender and sexuality in her native South Africa. History and aesthetics perfectly merge through the gallery's own lens. The Gallery should be a must-see at any tour of Chelsea. Likewise, it's a gallery to seek out during the important art fair weeks in Miami and NYC. On a personal observation, the entire staff is professional and polite. The namesake, Yancey Richardson, loves what she does and her genuine passion is immediately apparent. She is easily engaged in a conversation about the artists, art works, the process and the medium. Similarly, Director, Sarah, is equally happy to provide information and quick to provide insight and information. I've enjoyed seeing the gallery exhibitions and art fair presentations; and, personal acquisitions have been easy and exciting experiences.

I never want someone to be turned off art by the attitude of some supercilious gallerist. Yancey Richardson is exactly the kind of rude, cold place to discourage a new collector. I was in there last week, and the receptionist (who was definitely NOT busy) does not even respond to "hello". It reminds me a bit of the restaurant in LA Story, only less chatty and they didn't run my credit. As far as I know.

The gallery is located in a very grand, very beautiful Beaux-Arts townhouse on East 64th. It's so beautiful, the building itself is a highlight of any visit to the gallery. But the exhibits when I visited were great, too. I was able to see two exhibits during my visit on Saturday. "The Adventure of Domenico Gnoli," the exhibit I read about in the Times, closes on May 23, 2026. It's the largest exhibit of the artist's works in the United States in more than 5 decades (since his solo show in NYC in 1969). (Gnoli died of cancer at age 36 in 1970, so he only produced ~ 150 paintings in his short life.) The other exhibit I saw (you have to take an elevator from the second floor) was Armig Santos: Baladas, which closes on June 13. I appreciate the clean look of the galleries, which they are able to achieve by not having any wall labels by the pieces. They do have a few printed gallery guides at the desk where you enter that you can grab or you can scan QR codes on the wall as you enter each gallery. But I did miss the additional context and information that other galleries and museums include at the beginning of and throughout an exhibit. Still, the galleries are beautiful, and the works were very interesting. The Gnoli works surprised me and made me smile. And I appreciated learning about Armig Santos, a very young artist from Puerto Rico. It's a beautiful gallery with some great exhibits. I enjoyed my visit and have already signed up for their email list so I can visit upcoming shows!

It's only been about four months since my last visit to this (free!) gallery, with the gorgeous…read moretile and beautiful architecture, but they managed to come up with another riveting show that I just had to check out. This time the show focuses on New York art in the 80s, highlighting Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and over 20 more artists. Some things you can expect--Basquiat's pieces bursting at the seams with color, accompanying dark social undertones. Andy Warhol's pop art portraits of himself. Keith Haring's chunky shapes and figures. There are paintings, sculptures and multi-media pieces, as well as photographs (some a little alarming, like how old is that naked person, were they old enough to give consent?!). All the pieces are edgy, raw, colorful, just like the 80s. While there is a virtual guide to tell you which artist created which piece, there is not history or explanation, and that's a little frustrating for some of the more abstract or controversial pieces. This gallery has now impressed me twice in a short period of time, so it'll be on my regular rotation list to check out every time I'm on museum row.

Whatever artists are sourced for this business are truly untalented who copy all the worst ideas from the last 20 years and cover them in dripping graffiti. If you choose to spend money on one of these pieces and display it in your home you will reflect not only disgusting taste, but terrible judgement as well. An insult to 'art' all around.

But if you know the right sources (like the newsletters I get), you can be in the know concerning the best and most interesting shows. This weekend, in addition to PPOW (reviewed separately), I visited Perrotin to see the otherworldly art of Daniel Arsham. Arsham combines old and new, Greek figures with robotic innards. Beautiful Greek sculptures with complex architectural cities carved inside of them. You have to see it to understand it. So creative, the way it connects architecture, thought, memory, and our mental connections to places. Great gallery to add to your list.

My type of geniuses. Frank Calloway--- amazing story behind this artist ---as I'm finding with most of the artists that Edlin shows. This one in particular is 112 years old, and the current exhibit shows his 30-ft murals in crayon. So add crayons to the cool list, with the chocolate sculpture, cupcakes, and jazz trio. Rosen's gallery was located on Prince Street. These days, most of the top galleries like Gagosian and Bonakdar's are located in Chelsea. But I kind of miss the old SoHo days, and the atmosphere in Chelsea is totally different - almost like another world. Most of all, I miss Rosen's SoHo gallery. When I visited, she came out from the back and discussed the artist whose work she was exhibiting at the time, Miguel Calderon. I remember really liking his work. She also simultaneously showed the work of Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle. I read somewhere that Rosen has donated her archives to the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art. And while she no longer appears to have a physical gallery, it seems like she still represents (the estate of) Felix Gonzalez-Torres. Honestly, I wish she would reopen the gallery at some point. Rosen and her perspectives on art were a huge inspiration years ago.

It's very generous--I got a full tour of a fascinating show, "Counter Forms," with works by Tetsumi Kudo, Alina Szapocznikow, Paul Thek and Hannah Wilke, all of whom worked in different parts of them world, died youngish and were forgotten in the 90s but making a comeback now. And they deserve it: weird materials and biomorphic forms, industrail waste and synthetic pigments, intriguing use of slightly sickening colors and textures--a fertile mix of mad-science lab and contemplative poetry that seems to speak to the ways in which artists are dealing with the relationship between bodies and technologies now. Usually Andrea Rosen has a few shows up at once - a big one in the front, medium in the middle, and a selection of works by different artists in the showroom in the far rear, which means you're guaranteed to find SOMEthing to like on any given visit. For 'Counter Forms," however, the whole gallery was devoted to this single group exhibition. But it's definitely worth it! so much to see. There is also a small appendix across the street. I feel like the narrowness of this space makes it slightly awkward. It's smaller than any of the spaces across the street, even the little showroom in the back. I haven't felt really impressed or moved by a show here yet but, it's new so maybe they'll get the hang of it (no pun intended!).

The lady at the front desk was very friendly and it was a welcoming experience. Nice to briefly enter the world of billionaires and money launderers for a brief glimpse ! We saw Rothkos and Church paintings- the first two floors were open, not sure if there are ever other works on the other floors. Drop round to Lady Ms cakes next door for a high end snack after you have purchased your artwork.

Most of the pictures appear to have been shot from David's 2nd story room or a fire escape. If you're a fan of black & white photography of an era gone by, then you'll definitely enjoy the exhibit. My only complaint about this gallery, and almost all galleries in New York, is that they're small - but this one is worth the visit.
