Thrift finds: Dark denim skinny jeans and a boot cut + cute work blouse!
    Shannon L.

My second thrifting trip since moving to Madison and it was a great experience. This is a cute and well organized thrift shop. It is on the smaller end, but well worth the trip. I went in specifically for clothing. Found 2 pairs of dark denim jeans (1 pair was new with tags) and a nice dress up blouse for work each piece priced at $5.99. Not bad! There are a lot of vintage type items - China, unique furniture, glassware. I even found a Kirby for $24.99! Organized areas for shoes, books, purses. Not a lot of items for children...there was a small selection. Super friendly staff/volunteers. Clean dressing rooms. No funky smells when I entered the building. Great location! They offered a punch card incentive - for every $10 you spend you get a punch. Fill the card up and you get $10 off your next purchase. Will definitely be back again!

Great thrift store with lots of items at reasonable prices. Found nice kitchen tools for my daughter's new apartment.

Since Madison's "hippie Christmas" turned out to be a bit of a bust, we were really looking forward…read moreto checking out SWAP today. It's only open to the public on Fridays and the 2nd Saturday of each month. Never heard of it? Neither had I. From the SWAP website: "SWAP collects, processes, and redistributes surplus property generated by UW-Madison and state agencies, while providing UW-Madison departments, government agencies and non-profit organizations with low-cost, quality surplus equipment and supplies and finding reuse and recycling markets for surplus property. " And what does this mean? Deals, deals, deals! Once we found the proper exit off of 151-S in Verona, we walked into a warehouse busting with furniture, electronics, and computers. The inventory changes weekly, with new (well, old actually) additions coming from all the UW sites across the state in 20 - 30 truckloads a week! You'll find solid desks ($5-30), 60s-style chairs ($5), metal file cabinets, gym lockers, random electronics and lab equipment, and cheap computers. They even have some Badger sports equipment and uniforms. Oh, and ever wonder what happened to that old rusty bike you left chained to a campus bike rack for a season or two? You'll probably find it here for $5. Today they were giving away free dorm chairs (as many as you'd like) with a purchase. Once we crammed our loot into the car, we drove away with six cool vintage chairs for a total of $10. Not too shabby! Check their website for listings of new inventory and their online auction, too.

This past Saturday, they were selling lots of Badger gear from the swimming/diving team, rowing team and the tennis team. There was a large variety of shirts for $5 each, sweatshirts for $20, jackets for $30, etc. They had a lot of badger seat cushions for $.25/each. I wish I needed chairs. There were so many really nice chairs there (starting at $5 each). Lots of shelves, file drawers, tables, lab equipment, computer stuff, etc. We scooped up an awesome set of 8 lockers for $35 (previously marked for $100). The set is in great shape and will come in really handy. Give yourself about an hour to peruse the aisles. The prices are super low and can't be beat. They do have an online bidding site also for their more popular items. Open to the public the 2nd Saturday of each month.

I visited Upshift for their Krazy for Kitties event. I saw on Facebook that you could play with…read morekittens and get half off the swap fee, so that was enough to convince me! The swap fee is usually $20, so $10 was even more of a steal. The owner of Upshift, Lindsay, was there to give me a little intro to how things work. I liked the low-key feel of the swap, as in there's no one looking through your bag, and it's not an item-for-item swap. If you bring in two brown bags, you get to take home up to two brown bags! The store is pretty small, so having a bunch of people (and kittens!) in there made it a bit crunched, but everyone was polite and I felt like I had enough room. As usual with thrifting, you have to be ok with digging a bit for jewels. At first I wasn't sure if I'd find things in my size and style, especially since there were some teenagers there browsing with their moms! I wondered if I was too old to be there! But, after just a few minutes of looking through the racks I was able to find some nice pieces -- some casual, some professional, some nice brands. I think that as more and more people start swapping, the options will be even better. There are 2 dressing rooms that you can pop into to try things on, and the lighting and mirrors were great. I love the idea that you can just take something home to try it out, even if you're not sure if it's quite your style -- it doesn't add any cost, so why not? At the same time, it didn't bug me to put things back on the rack -- I was only paying $10 so who cares if it's just a select few items I take, it was still cheap. I also like that I wasn't pressured into taking as much as I brought to swap. I am trying to minimize a bit, so bringing more than I take home is actually quite nice! There is also an online swap available, which is a really interesting idea. Overall, I would come back here to swap. If I have a bag of clothes I'm giving away, might as well take a look for a couple of new-to-me items.

I love love love upshift. This review is long over due. So…read moreyou need to bring a bag of clothes to give to them- they don't check that the clothes are nice or anything, but it's more of a community/sharing kind of place that I always try to give them good pieces not just junk. Then you can fill up that same bag with anything you might find in the store, and you pay the flat price of $20. I've been here 4 times and always loaded my bag with the most fun things. This is what I love--- When I go thrifting I'll often find fun things that I just don't know if I'll ever have a chance to wear, and I won't get them because it's not worth the money. But here- you can shove it in your bag and not worry about it because you're not paying per piece! All of the crazy things I've gotten are now my favorite things. I've gotten leather boots, 90s miniskirts, a pink denim rhinestone jacket, Levi's, and so so much more. The girls that work there are amazing and friendly. Seriously, I couldn't love a store more.
