I can't believe I have never eaten at Ahan Thai until recently! My friend suggested we pop in before a movie and it was closer than walking to Shin Thai (which I adore). Ahan had a cute location near the train tracks, Noir Leather, and that tiny burger place in downtown Royal Oak. There is a parking structure nearby so that's convenient too. It was oddly dim inside and really felt like it was more so set up for take out--I'm guessing since the pandemic. You order in the middle of the restaurant and they bring the food to you in take away containers. I had the Pad Se Eew and Hot and Sour Soup with tofu (which was vegetarian! And very similar to how Thai Cafe made theirs. The Pad See Eew was flavorful and had a good mix of veg. The spice level was great! I ordered medium and felt like it fit the bill nicely. Water is available in large pour containers. In general, I would go back. Dine-in was awkward but hey, it was delicious. read more

First time trying this place and I'm happy with my decision. The Gang Gai had a little kick for it being mild. There was a good amount of vegetables and beef. Meh. I was pretty underwhelmed when I ordered for lunch today. Granted I lived in NYC for 5 years where I think the Thai food is plentiful and some of the best you can get anywhere, but even so I was a little disappointed with my lunch today. First and foremost the delivery was messy - like bags leaking etc. Maybe was the delivery driver's fault but I didn't get that impression. The one thing I will say is that lunch is super super cheap. $10 for pad Thai and the portion size is massive. We also got a Tom Kha soup for like $4 which, compared to the $8 I pay in NYC, is an absolute bargain. With that said, the soup was gnarly. Like watery and not at all the rich coconut flavor that I'm used to. Had a weird citrus flavor (not lime) that should not have been in there. Pad Thai was good but unlike any pad Thai I've had before, so either I've never had authentic pad Thai or (more likely) this one was just wrong. Good flavor, just not pad Thai. I had a $25 Postmates credit and used it for Ahan Thai tonight ... to be honest, I wanted to try Shin Thai once I saw it on there, but Ahan Thai quoted me 60-75 minutes and Shin Thai was saying 2+ hours. I ordered the fresh rolls (yass! I was so excited when I saw those, I love them and sometimes they are hard to find) and Pad Cashew, with beef. -1 star because: they skimped on the beef and cashews. I counted maybe 5-7 pieces of beef max. Lots of veggies, though, including fresh mushrooms, green pepper, and red pepper. The fresh rolls were good and had chicken in them, and the sauce that came with them was great; peanutty and some sort of vinegar (the traditional fresh rolls sauce, though a little sweeter than others I've had). Overall I would try Ahan Thai again, but I'd maybe order a chicken dish next time to see if I get more of a meat portion. read more

It was my first time here on a Tuesday evening. My friend and I decided at the last minute to eat here. He had been here before and enjoyed their food so I was happy to give it a go. He ordered the Pad Thai with chicken. And I got the drunken noodles with chicken. I was debating between this and the pineapple fried rice but I was in a noodle mood so I went with the drunken noodles. Our waitress said it was one of the most popular dishes. Their menu is customizable in that you select your protein so that was nice. I like the veggies that came in my dish and the brown sauce was very flavorful. My friend said my dish looked really good and that he would order it next time. The portions are pretty plentiful. Both he and I had leftovers to take with us. The service was quick. I think there was only one other customer in the place but that could of been a function of when we went. If I'm in the area, I would go back. Overall, a solid option for Thai. read more

Thai food is one of my favorites because of the combination of flavors each dish offers. In terms of my favorite Thai restaurant in Royal Oak, Ahan Thai is at the top of my list! Crab Rangoon was on the menu, and there was no question about it; I am terribly weak and always have to order it when I see it! I love the plum dipping sauce it comes with. I ordered the Pattani curry entree. It was a tough choice among all their options under the curry entrees section of the menu. But what really sold it for me was the fact that the Pattani was the only one that came with baby corn. I love baby corn! I also really enjoyed the roasted cashew nuts sauteed in the coconut red curry; it had the right amount of spicy kick alongside its sweetness. The restaurant is clean, and the employees are welcoming and respectful. The waitress I had was incredibly nice and she provided great service. Ahan Thai is definitely a place I would look forward to returning to in the near future! read more

Nice that this place is up and running again. It's always sad to see a vacant spot downtown and this location is right in the heart of the center on 4th between Main Street and Washington. My litmus for all Thai restaurants is getting Pad Thai with chicken. It wasn't bad, but not fantastic either. It was about the same rating before it closed and opened back up too. The food quality and tastes didn't change. It's tough to stack up to my favorite Thai in Dearborn (BK96) on telegraph or the Thai street kitchen in Bloomfield's Hills on Woodward, even Penn's Thai on 14 mile is my A grade for good Thai. The overall experience wasn't bad, could be more special somehow. Still in pinch and close by it serves its purpose. read more

Got food delivered from Door Dash. Crab Rangoon was not even in a ball shape. Came in triangles with hardly any filling and the shape made it too doughy and soggy. Pad Thai had NO SAUCE. Definitely not made with Tamarind or fish sauce or anything for that matter. Whole dish was white. Did have fresh bean sprouts and chicken was good. Just tasted like sorta spicy noodles. No just no. The food did not taste fresh the sauce for my meal was just sickly sweet. Hardly any chicken could be found in either my or my man's meals. The shrimp roll could have been good but it was fried in oil that was not hot enough. The sauce that accompanied the shrimp spring roll was the only saving grace of the entire meal. Stop by couple days ago to grab dinner. I ordered there Bacon Fried rice with chicken, Pad-see-ew hot spice with beef and an appetizer sampler. Got delivery via door dash. Crab rangoon was shaped different than used to. But still tasty. My only issues was the up charge. I asked for extra egg on the pineapple fried rice (which was good). I'll let you decide if you want to go here after this review. I ordered food from there tonight. They delivered my order wrong (was a small, simple order). They gave me shrimp instead of chicken. I'm allergic to shrimp so lucky I caught it. I called back and complained and she sounded less than sympathetic. A few minutes went by and she called me back accusing me of lying. She said the cooks said they were out of shrimp. Interesting. See my attached image of the shrimp. So after I offered to drive up there and show her she said no and she would refund my $12 (only half my meal). I explained to her that if she would have refunded my order being the inconvenience she caused and rudeness she displayed, I would have probably came back and tried it again. She responded with something to the tune of "people like you aren't welcome there". Literally. I was shocked. So because I'm also fair I'll leave an honest review on what my wife ate. My wife and I found this place after deciding not to wait 30 minutes at another nearby establishment. What a nice surprise. The hot-sour soup had clarity, not the usual off-putting goopiness. The spring roll was hot and steamy. Fried rice was not sticky or greasy. My main dish (pong karee?) was a nice balance of a thin yellow curry, carrots, potatoes and peas (they even gave me a choice of steamed or fried tofu - YES!). The room was cozy with cute but sturdy booths. The staff was friendly and informative. This dining experience was a nice change from the rest of the Royal Oak hubbub. read more

From the outside, this place is adorable. On the inside, it's still pretty cute. I have to say the food is pretty good. I do agree that having everything on one plate is not my favorite way to eat Thai. For one, you get more freedom in mixing when the parts are served separately. Moreover, it's harder to eat when one plate is piled with everything and you have no room to maneuver around your food. Aside from that, Ahan is pretty good. The food isn't the best I've had, nor is it the worst. I think I need to go back and order some more items off the menu, possibly some noodle dishes, which I have yet to try there. I would give this place 3.5 stars, but I round down because nothing stands out aside from how it looks like a cute little hut. Outside looks aren't what keep customers coming back though. read more

I did a quick pop in here for a snack and tried their Fresh Spring Rolls. The rolls can be a good representation of what their other food may be like depending on freshness of the vegetables, aromatic-ness of the herbs, and the texture of the rice noodle wraps. The wraps were fresh and not dried out. They were stuffed with vegetables and noodles with them almost ready to pour out. The herbs were fresh with nice aromas when biting into it. The sauce was slightly different than other places. This one had a bit of a smokey hint to it. It was refreshing to have a slightly different flavor and to see they put their own touch into their sauce. The fresh wraps gives you a welcoming feeling to come back and try an entree now. I hope it has the same freshness and fresh herbaceous flavors the wraps had. I'm not sure if it was my timing or not, but I was the only customer in the restaurant. I used to be biased to the Thai restaurant in Royal Oak I would dine at, until a friend of mine let me in on a little secret, Ahan Thai. This gem of a restaurant offers some of the best Thai food in the local area. Ahan is my go to restaurant when I'm hungry and I don't know where to go-the food is incessantly awesome. I often dream about their Drunken Noodles, egg noodles with green pepper and basil is a perfect combination of sweet and spicy. Add a few spring rolls with plum sauce and you've got an authentic and absolutely appeasing meal. The restaurant's décor is simple, but inviting and the staff is friendly. The prices are beyond reasonable. I recall ordering an obnoxious amount of food with chicken, tofu, and pork in it to take to band practice and the bill was stunningly cheap. I sometimes wonder how this joint stays open. But when you offer quality food at quality prices, I suppose it's simple. read more

Meh sums it up. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. The Pong Karee (gang garee is how I typically see it rendered) was very runny. Not the thick, delicious yellow sauce that I typically get at other restaurants. And it was chock full of peas and carrots. Again, not typical in my experience. The taste was decent. The pineapple fried rice was ho-hum boring. And you have to add peas and carrots if you want them, for an extra dollar each. Typically these come in fried rice by default. The Tom Yum soup was more like Tom Yuck. They really put the "lemon" in "lemongrass". Pretty sure it was all lemon, though, and no grass. Not a fan. So yeah, probably not going to order from here again. I mean, they don't even have larb. That should have been my first clue that this was going to be a bummer. After reading a few other comments I guess I find myself in the minority. I suppose when I pop into a local Thai joint for a $10 dinner, I don't expect for my fried rice meal to be presented on a hand made plank with garnish cut into a swan with a razor blade. Did it taste good? Yes. I disagree with James B. on the heat factor of the Pad S'ewe. That is my fiance's go-to Thai dish and she also ordered medium heat and got the kick she was looking for. I sampled as well, and compared to Penn's (where we ate a few weeks ago) the kick was 10x better...review of Penn's to follow. We also ordered a spring roll each and I'm not sure how Janelle W. would proposed a single spring roll be served. They brought it out, it was hot, it was delicious, it was $1.50, the end. I'm not going think twice because it came on small plate with the standard pink sauce. Maybe they should charge more and waste lettuce or garnish. Maybe my expectations of Thai restaurants are much lower. Aren't most of them hole-in-the-wall types who focus on taste and cost rather than a 5 star dining experience? I realize I might not be making friends but I had a pleasant experience and thought the food tasted good, which to me is most important. I think I would go back to Ahan over Thai on Main or the place whose name escapes me on Washington St., that very small inside and devoid of any decor. Other comments about the meal...I went with a fried rice and mixed veggie plate with chicken. I thought the rice was great, the heat was hot as requested, and the veggies were nice a big. I hate getting baby corn that looks like a little yellow candy corn. Here the pieces were large and didn't include the sometimes off-putting pointy ends. We got another app which was pretty solid but I forget the name. I recently had Penn's on 14 and Crooks which was great, also 4 star (could have been 5 if not for some mistakes), but I think if I find myself already in downtown RO or don't feel like taking a longer drive, Ahan Thai might be a new venue in the RO rotation. read more
