My son and I have been students here for 2 years. Sifu Alan Myrtle is great with the kids and…read moreadults. You can tell he has been teaching kids for a long time. He is calm and encouraging with them. He also requires they respect him and each other. They love his games! He encourages the kids to compete in Forms/kata and sparring/kumite. The school does well at competitions. For the adults he is a wealth of knowledge on Kenpo and several other styles. Starting you slow and continually letting you in on some more info that helps you get better. Teaching is always sprinkled with a bit of humor. Some of his own black belts help teach classes.

If you put in the time, effort and energy, the knowledge gained, as well as the physical, mental and emotional aspects, is beneficial even when not on the mat. Sifu Alan Myrtle is patient, wants the best of each and every student, and would like for you to learn some martial arts history as well as "THE WHY" we do certain movements, etc. During lessons, we have seriousness, as well as sense of humor thrown in there! This creates a balance. I highly recommend Northwest Martial Arts. PS. The dojo is located same side of Safeway but across the street next to Jack's donuts!

I visited the different Jiu Jitsu schools in the Redding area before i chose to attend Mendes Jiu Jitsu in Palo Cedro, CA. They are passionate about teaching the art of Jiu Jitsu and the staff are phenomenal from Professor Nate Mendes on down to the Coaches that impart their collective knowledge onto their students. If you are looking for a place to begin your Jiu Jitsu journey and receiving enthusiastic and passionate teaching from phenomenal Jiu Jitsu practitioners then please check out Mendes Jiu Jitsu.

I appreciate that there is someone available to answer questions about new memberships/billing. Very professional. The kids class is massive and they have plenty of instructors on the mat to help. Instruction here is top notch. It's kind of expected that you'll get "thrown to the wolves" when you start jiu jitsu as there are really no "basics/beginner course"; you just immerse and catch up eventually (unless you pay extra for personals). I appreciate that they see when someone needs help and they provide it, instead of leaving you lost and floundering. As for adults class, everyone is friendly and respectful. There are no women's classes (that's fine) and males and females are mixed in class but they do a great job with the culture to ensure the women don't feel intimidated. The female black belt instructors do an amazing job at putting new female students at ease. Everyone is so nice and respectful and I have not had any negative experiences. More emphasis on self-defense aspect here, which I appreciate. Very realistic. But they'll also get you competition-ready if that's your goal too. I appreciate the structure, discipline, and higher expectation here. Quality team and families. Highly recommend!
