I thought this place was pretty cool. They have a ton of airplanes outside that you can walk around and look at. Really puts into perspective how massive those aircraft are. Inside you can also see what the atom bomb looks like, numerous photos, letters, and all kinds of other memorabilia. It's a very cool place. It's a little outdated, but you don't pay to go inside, so it's kind of expected. I think if you were driving by, and you see it I would have 100% recommend. I wouldn't tell anybody to drive over 30 minutes and go out of their way to see it though. The airplanes and aircraft outside was definitely the coolest part. read more

Unfortunately the day I visited it was rainy and dreary. The lady at the front patiently went over what the museum had to offer. I spent about 1.5 hours and really enjoyed myself. They were times I became emotional. The history of the AF runs deep and this space was a sliver. I didn't get to see the outside planes due to the weather. Check them out Yelpers. read more

Absolutely outstanding experience. I cannot recommend the United States Air Force Armament Museum at Eglin Air Force Base highly enough. I visited with my two sons, ages 13 and 14, and we all had an incredible time. The museum itself is impressive, well laid out, and packed with history, but what truly made the visit unforgettable was a volunteer named Pappy. He generously spent a long time giving us a guided tour, sharing stories, answering questions, and connecting the exhibits to real-world history in a way that completely captivated my boys. They especially loved seeing the aircraft up close, including the mini planes and, in particular, the F-4 Phantom. That one hit home for our family, as their grandfather flew an F-4 in Vietnam. Seeing that aircraft in person, while hearing knowledgeable and respectful commentary, was genuinely meaningful. This museum does an exceptional job of honoring history while keeping it engaging for younger visitors. If you have children, especially teens, or any interest in aviation or military history, this is a must-see. We left impressed, grateful, and already talking about coming back. For a free entrance this museum has so much to offer! We decided to go here when it rains all day long. The rain didn't stop us from walking around quite a bit to look at all the planes. My toddler was beyond excited to see all big jets, helicopters. Came inside the museum & explore. An easy 2 hours trip with toddler, he didn't want to leave. A great place for family. read more

Great (free!) military aviation museum!! The inside is definitely dated, but the history and items on display are timeless. As you drive by you can see stairs to some planes, but you're NOT allowed inside or to touch any of them which was slightly disappointing. Overall a lot to see and learn!! read more

My Hubbs wanted to make sure we had enough time to stop here on our way back to the airport-I love military planes. I'm like a little kid when I get to see them up close. We didn't go inside the museum today, just walked the outside grounds and looked at all the planes. It's a free attraction and each plane has a plaque explaining all about it. This museum is set off next to the Elgin Air Force Base. We stopped in when we had a couple hours to kill before our flight at the nearby Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport. The museum is free, which is always great when kids are tagging along. It was clean organized, and had a number of neat planes, weapons, and memorabilia. There are running video/audio displays that are on loops. There is a small gift shop and a donation box as well. The highlight for me was actually all of the planes outside the museum. SR-71 blackbirds, F-15, F-16, and many others. It was neat to be able to walk right up to the planes and choppers and see what they are like. If you are a history or aviation buff I would highly recommend stopping in. read more

This place is simply amazing for Air Force history, especially in the history of armament. They host ceremonies and retirements here and are also the new visitor entry center for the base. Any time I bring people to the pan handle I stop here with them. They have tons of aircraft outside and lots of munitions history inside. This is a must stop. read more

An excellent place to visit. I hope that everyone visiting or living near this area comes and visits this museum. It's an incredible piece of aviation and military history. Many Air Force planes are on exhibit, both inside and outside the museum. The outside exhibits are strategically placed around the parking lot, so you drive around and view them. My wife and I love museums, I particularly enjoy all kinds of military museums; this one was great! During our stay in Destin at Christmas holiday, our visit to Air Force Museum on a rainy, coolor than usual day, was perfect! We found the museum larger than expected; there are outdoor displays as well as indoor. We planned to spend a couple of hours but ended up using at least 4 hours. There are all kinds of aircrafts, from World War II to now. I was particularly impressed by Blackbird, (one of the fastest planes ever built). We had a chance to explore some of these incredible planes as well as read about the history behind them. I truly recommend spending quality time at the Air Force Armament Museum if you ever visit the Destin area. It is full of history and an incredible array of aircrafts from our amazing Air Force! read more

Driving by this museum, we had to stop. We were on vacation, heading to the beach, and saw a bunch of planes parked around the building. The parking lot alone is a museum itself. It was 30minutes before opening and they were planning some sof of ceremony, but let us in to look around without any problem. Free admission to see any and everything the USA has ever blown up. As I walked outside there were fighter jets flying around from the local air force base. VERY cool. Don't miss this gem if you're in the area! read more

I really enjoyed coming here while visiting family in Fl. I especially enjoyed touring this facility with my dad who was in the air force. They have a nice collection of planes and artifacts from the WWII, Korean, Vietnam and Gulf War eras. They also have numerous interactive displays that are helpful for educational purposes. Admittance is free but donations are gladly accepted. The museum is open Monday through Saturday except on Federal Holidays. Inside the Air Force Armament are a collection of planes, missiles, bombs, and a gun vault. They also have a gift shop and an area for ceremonies. Touring is on your own and it takes a few hours to tour the whole facility. Outside the main building are the larger planes including a SR-71 Blackbird. This is a really nice museum and they have a fantastic collection of planes and artifacts that you can get up and close to. Growing up in a military family, I appreciate places like this that honor our air force history. read more

If you're an aviation fan or buff this is like a candy shop! Not to mention a completely FREE museum! They have a majority of the most popular fighters on display from the last 50 years. You can walk directly up to most of the planes too. If you're interested in the bombs they also have majority of them on display either outside or inside the museum. It's also pretty cool seeing the latest fighters fly by since its right next to Eglin AFB. Yeah you see some F35, F16s, etc, randomly if you come at the right time of day. read more

What a special place to be the day before Veteran's Day while waiting to catch a flight to Baltimore. A free military aviation museum with plenty of free parking, interesting exhibits, spacious walking/touring grounds and very friendly volunteers. From WWI to WWII to Desert Storm and humanitarian missions, this museum covers it all. The fighter planes are amazing to see up close and what an education one can get here! Wow !!! This place is amazing with so much to see and a ton of history. Even the kids enjoyed seeing all the planes and the memorabilia. Tight outside downtown Fort Walton and minutes away from Destin-Fort Walton Airport. Beat the heat with this on your vacation! We were looking for something to do indoors that wouldn't break the bank, and this was it. While majority of the planes are outside and in the sweltering heat, there is a TON to look at inside where it's nice and cool. A couple of informational movies, interactive screens (tap to learn more type), and so much history to really take on. The museum is really well done. I was impressed. Younger kids (unless obsessed with airplanes) may be bored, but our 8 y/o was fine walking around and looking. read more

Beautiful planes!! Rich history on display of the United States. Actually seeing the gunship planes up close is quite impressive. Just the fact they helped save us and others in the world at one time blows my mind. The soldiers that were in charge of making sure all of these planes worked were and are highly skilled!! Imagine the intelligence of those; the skill set and memory alone is breathtaking!! If in a dog fight and a plane needs immediate repairs, which they did, they did IT!! WOW! Really cool display of fighter jets and assorted planes and helicopters. Nice tributes to veterans. Not so kid friendly and staff let's you know it right away. We had the boys put in a coin donation in a collection bin and someone came from offices to ask them to be quiet. You would think they might want to be welcoming to next generation of potential recruits. read more

My last Florida travel roadside attraction in August : Air Force Armament Museum at Eglin Air Force Base. The museum was closed but the outside park is open & free to the public. This is a fun place to take children and families to learn, explore, and take photos. The museum's website provides a lot of information: The Air Force Armament Museum is the only museum in the world dedicated to the collection, preservation and exhibition of artifacts and memorabilia associated with Air Force Armament and its platforms of delivery. There are over 29 different aircraft that have found a home at the Air Force Armament Museum including an AC-130, B-17, B-25, B-52, P-51, A-10, F-15, F-16, F-100, F-101, and many other aircraft from the WWII era to the present. There are also several hundred pieces of armament to include a gun collection, bombs, bomblets and missiles to include the Sparrow, Sidewinder, cluster bombs, Bunker Buster and the MOAB. A 32-minute film on the history of Eglin Air Force Base and its role in the development of armament is shown continuously throughout the day. No advance notice is necessary for groups; however, it is best to call ahead at (850) 882-4062 to insure there are no other functions occurring at the same time. Groups with children under 10 years of age must have one adult for every five to seven children. There is a lot to see and do at the Air Force Armament Museum. If you don't see everything in one visit, there's always tomorrow and chances are good that we'll be open. read more

We've been to many Military museums. Most have been larger than the Air Force Armament Museum here in Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. Still, this museum is worth the visit. Plus, it's FREE! This museum has static displays outdoors - mostly planes and helicopters and it has and large amount of static and a few interactive displays indoors. The indoor displays are spread out across 2 floors (stairs and elevator). It also includes a small theater and a gift shop. While there are a few planes indoors, much of the displays are as one would expect, Armaments. Guns, missiles, bobs and more. The indoor portion of the museum closes at 4:30 pm (Saturday), so were sort on time. As such, we went through the entire indoor museum, including about 20 minutes of the 30 minute movie in about 90 minutes. Ideally, I'd like to have spent 3 hours in total here with 1 being outdoors and 2 being indoors. We learned quite a bit and felt the museum was well put together. read more

Cool place to check out if you are into planes, military history, guns etc. Kinda hits different when you visit these places and have a loved one in the Air Force. However, The young lady at the front desk was not very nice at all. If she is going to continue to be the first person you see when you walk in, maybe smile?!? She was very straight to the point, "this way for this, that way for that", not a welcome, hi, come on in, etc. Looked like she kinda hated being there and dreaded every time the door opened, that's all I'm saying. read more
