The vet wanted to send us to a cardiologist ($$$) and join their care club($$$) as it would include the costs from that days visit. He wasn't willing to start heart meds in the interim (I asked) which made me feel like I'm sitting on a ticking time bomb. It just seemed like after a $300 visit (which also seems pretty steep for a wellness check and vaccinations), I wasn't given any options - felt like I was being held hostage in a way. So I made an appt for a consult with a vet in diamond valley. He'd reviewed her chart, and I explained the situation. He raised his eyebrows and said "this is a vca clinic?" Started heart meds immediately and we'll check in in a month and then talk about how to proceed for dental surgery. Way more reasonable and practical approach. My guess is that the vets and techs at vca are lovely people, but work for a very profit driven organization. it seems like they use emotions and a bit of fear to push people into making very expensive decision As my new vet said "good veterinary care shouldn't be only for the wealthy."

He had been blind for a few months and carried him on and off the deck every time he wanted out, the dog was well cared for. Well after coming home from putting him down and going out to throw the ball for the other dogs, I came in and discovered an e-mail from this young vet. she was reporting this dog to the humane society. As I had stated to her w I was at the clinic he when downhill very quickly and had to wait about a week for appointment. As I have dealt with this clinic for decades perhaps she should have looked at the history and not made the judgement she did. Perhaps if I had been a walk in that would have been different. and to read this in an email.... I was devastated having to do the kind thing and put this dog down. I also have to say that I've tried a lot of clinics because one of my cats had a very rare neurological condition that was hard to diagnose and caused her to slowly lose function. It was awful and I was surprised how many vets weren't that compassionate or helpful. Westhills is one of the good ones. I only take off a star because the prices could be more affordable, but then again you have to consider their costs are probably higher due to where they are in the city and how much extra care they put into their services. You get what you pay for and they are worth it.
